作为一个庞大的农耕商业帝国，近代早期中国的政治经济涵括了多样的经济与环境。

以经济而言，江南人口甲天下，种植稻米、棉花，生产手工制品；这些农产品经由高度发达的区域市场进入商业流通，并通过“富而有礼”的儒商等商人网络贩卖到各地。
