They are being developed as tourist, leisure, and residential resorts, and will increase the coastline of the country by 120 kilometres. After four years of planning and careful consideration of the environmental issues, construction started in 2001. Dutch engineers with experience of reclaiming land from the sea were employed in the building of the first two islands. The site for all three islands is an area of the sea where the water is not very deep. Sand is taken from the seabed and sprayed into the construction site. Although the shallow water facilitates this process, the islands are still very exposed to the currents and tidal movements of the sea. Rocks are used to hold the sand in place resulting in a large crescent(月状的)structure. This acts as a breakwater and protects the islands from the sea.The first two islands are in the shape of date palm trees and consist of a trunk and 17 fronds,or leaves, coming off the trunk. The first island, named Palm Jumeirah, has three five-star hotels in the trunk, and luxury homes in the leaves. It is astonishing that when these homes went on sale in 2004,they were all sold within three days. The second palm Jebel Ali,was started in 2002 and is designed to be an entertainment centre. Six marinas(小游艇船坞)are planned, with a water theme park, and home built on stilts(桩柱)in the water. The Palm Deira is planned to be the largest of the three islands, with a length of 14 km and a width of 8.5 km,an area larger than the city of Paris. It will consist of residential properties, marinas, shopping malls, sports facilities, and clubs. These will be open to both residents and tourists.More artificial islands, the World Islands, are now being constructed near the Palm Jumeirah. They consist of 300 private islands grouped into the shape of the continents of the world and will be used for estates, private homes, community islands, and resorts.Unquestionably, these artificial islands are one of the wonders of the modern world. They will also maintain Dubai‘s status as one of the leading tourist destinations in the region.16. 2014年职称英语考试真题(B理工)

Climate Change :The Long Reach1 . Earth is warming. Sea levels are rising. There ‘s more carbon in the air,and Arctic ice is melting faster than at any time in recorded history. Scientists who study the environment to better gauge (评估).Earth’s future climate now argue that these changes may not reverse for a very long time .2 . People burn fossil fuels like coal and oil for energy. That burning releases carbon dioxide,a colorless gas . In the air ,this gas traps heat at Earth‘s surface . And the more carbon dioxide released ,the more the planet warms . If current consumption of fossil fuels doesn’t slow ,the long-term climate impacts could last thousands of years-and be more severe than scientists had been expecting. Climatologist Richard Zeebe of the University of Hawaii at Manoa offers this conclusion in a new paper.3. Most climate-change studies look at what‘s going to happen in the next century or so . During that time, changes in the planet’s environment could nudge(推动)global warming even higher. For example:Snow and ice reflect sunlight back into space. But as these melt, sunlight can now reach——and warm –the exposed ground . This extra heat raises the air temperature even more, causing even more snow to melt. This type of rapid exaggeration of impacts is called a ‘fast feedback’.4. Zeebe says it‘s important to look at fast feedbacks. However,he adds, they’re limited. From a climate change perspective,‘This century is the most important time for the next few generations’,he told Science News “But the world is not ending in 2100”。

2014年职称英语真题及答案综合类B级(阅读理解)

第一篇The Making of a Success StoryIKEA is the world's largest furniture retailer, and the man behind it is Ingvar Kamprad, one of the world's most successful entrepreneurs.Born in Sweden in1926,Kamprad was a natural businessman. As a child,he enjoyed selling things and made small profits from selling matches, seeds, and pencils in his community. When Kamprad was17,his father gave him some money as a reward for his good grades.Naturally he used it to start up a business一IKEA.IKEA's name comes from Kamprad's initials(I.K.)and the place where he grew up('E'and'A').Today IKEA is known for its modern, minimalist furniture1,but it was not a furniture company in the beginning.Rather,IKEA sold all kinds of miscellaneous goods.Kamprad's wares included anything that he could sell for profits at discounted prices2,including watches, pens and stockings.IKEA first began to sell furniture through a mail-order catalogue in1947.The fUrniture was all designed and made by manufacturers near Kamprad's home.Initial sales were veryencouraging,so Kamprad expanded the product line.Furniture was such a successful aspect of the business that IKEA became solely a furniture company in1951.In1953IKEA opened its first showroom in Almhult,Sweden. IKEA is known today for its spacious stores with furniture iti attractive settings, but in the early1950s,people ordered from catalogues. Thus response to the first showroom was overwhelmiig:people loved being able to see and try the furniture before buying it.This led to increased sales and the company continued to thrive.By1955,IKEA was designing all its own furniture.In1956Kamprad saw a man disassembling a table to make it easier to transport.Kamprad was inspired. The man had given him a great idea:flat packaging3.Flat packaging would mean lower shipping costs for IKEA and lower prices for customers. IKEA tried it and sales soared. The problem was that people had to assemble furniture themselves, but over time, even this grew into an advantage for IKEA.Nowadays,IKEA is often seen as having connotations of self-sufficiency.This image has done wonders for the company, leading to better sales and continuedexpansion.Today there are over200stores in32countries.Amazingly, Ingvar Kamprad has managed to keep IKEA a privately-held company.In2004he was named the world's richest man.He currently lives in Switzerland and is retied from the day-to-day operations of IKEA.IKEA itself, though, just keeps on growing.31.Kamprad established IKEA withA.his personal savingsB.his father’s reward for his school performancerge profits from selling thingsD.his school’s support32.The author states in Paragraph5that flat packagingA.needs large space to assembly fumitureB.is a business concept inspired by KampradC.helps reduce transportation costsD.makes the company self-sufficient33.According to the passage.which of the following is NOT true?A.IKEA experienced rapid expansion since the late1950sB.IKEA designd its own products since1955C.IKEA sold all kinds of miscellaneous goods originallyD.Kamprad said his company after retirement34.what is the auther’s attitude towards IKEA’s future according toA.indifferentB.DoubtfulC.OptimisticD.Pessimistic35.The passage is developed primarily in terms ofA.analysis of a processB.examples that illustrate a problemanson and contrastD.sequence events答案:BCDCD第二篇Approaches to Understanding IntelligencesIt bays to be smart, but we are not all smart in the same way.You may be a talented musician, but you might not be a goodreader. Each of us is different.Psychologists disagree about what is intelligence and what are talents or personal abilities.Psychologists have two different views on intelligence. Some believe there is one general intelligence.Others believe there are many different intelligences. Some psychologists say there is one type of intelligence that can be measured with IQ tests. These psychologists support their view with research that concludes that people who do well on one kind of test for mental ability do well on other tests. They do well on tests using words, numbers or pictures. They do well on individual or group tests, and written or oral tests. Those who do poorly on one test,do the same on all tests.Studies of the brain show that there is a biological basis for general intelligence. The brain of intelligence people use less energy during problem solving. The brain waves of people with higher intelligence show a quicker reaction. Some researchers conclude that differences in intelligence result from differences in the speed and effectiveness of informationprocessing by the brain.Howard Gardner,a psychologist at the Harvard School of Education, has four children. He believes that all children are different and shouldn’t be tested by one intelligence test.Although Gardner believes general intelligence exists, he doesn’t think it tells much about the talents of a person outside of formal schooling. He think that the human mind has different intelligences. These intelligences allow us to solve the kinds of problems we are presented with in life. Each of us has different abilities within these intelligences.Gardner believes that the purpose of school should be to encourage development of all of our intelligences.Gardner says that his theory is based on biology. For example, when one part of the Brain is injured, other parts of the brain still work.People who cannot talk because of Brain damage can still sing. So,there is not just one intelligence to lose.Gardner has Identified8different kinds of intelligence;linguistic, mathematical, spatial, musical, Interpersonal,intrapersonal,body-kinesthetic(身体动觉的),and naturalistic.36.What is the main idea of this passage?A.The importance of intelligenceB.The development of intelligence testsC.How to understand intelligenceD.How to become intelligent37.Which of the following statements is true concerning general intelligence?A.Most intelligent people do well on some intelligence testsB.Intelligent people do not do well on group testsC.Intelligent people do better on written tests than on oral testsD.People doing well on one type of intelligence test do well on other tests38.Gardner believe thatA.all children are alikeB.children have different intelligencesC.children should take one intelligence testD.there is no general intelligence39.According to Gardner schools shouldA.promote development of all intelligencesB.test student's who do poorly on testsC.train students who do poorly on testsD.focus on finding the most intelligent students40.Gardner thinks that his theory has aA.musical foundationB.intrapersonal foundationC.linguistic foundationD.biological foundation答案:CDBAD第三篇The Workers'Role in ManagementTraditionally,it has been the workers'role to work and management's role to manage.Managers have planned and directed the firm's operations with little thought to consulting the labor force.Managers have rarely felt compelled to obtain the workers'opinions or to explain their decisions to their employees. At most, companies have provided“suggestion boxes”in which workers could place ideas for improving procedures. In recent years, however, many managementspecialists have been arguing that workers are more than sellers of labor-they have a vital stake in the company and may be able to make significant contributions to its management. Furthermore, major company decisions profoundly affect workers and their dependents. This is particularly true of plant closings, which may put thousands on the unemployment lines.Should workers, then play a stronger role in management?Workers should have a role in management. At the very least the labor force should be informed of major policy decisions.(A common complaint among rank-and-file workers is the lack of information about company policies and actions.)Between 1980and1985about five million workers were the victims of plant closings and permanent layoffs, often with no warning. At least90days——notice ought to be given in such instances so that workers have time to adjust.Management should consult workers before closing a plant because the workers might be able to suggest ways of improving productivity and reducing costs and might be willing to make concessions that will help keep the plant operating. It should become a general practice to include workers in some managerial decision making. There ought to be representatives of the workers on the firm's board of directors or other major policymaking groups. If rank-and-file workers are given a voice in the planning and management of the work flow, they will help to make improvements, their morale will rise, and their productivity will increase. As a further incentive they must be given a share in the company's profits. This can be done through employee stockownership plans, bonuses,or rewards for efficiency and productivity. Finally, when a plant can no longer operate at a profit, the workers should be given the opportunity to purchase the plant and run it themselves.41.It can be inferred from Paragraph1that managersA.were not qualifiedB.seldom obtain workers opinionC.dislike suggestion workers opinionsD.never consulted the tapor torce42.In recent years, many management specialists have been arguing theyA.should have a say in management of the companyB.are no longer sellers of the productsC.are less affected by company decisions than beforeD.are able to make final decisions for the company43.The word rank-file Paragraph2is closest in meaning toA.seniorB.ordinaryC.intelligentD.capable44.According to the passage, what happened between1980 and1985A.About five million workers were laid off without advance noticeB.Managers consulted workers before closing a plantC.Workers did not make necessary concessionD.Many companies were closed because of strikes45.If not give a voice in managerial decision making, workersA.may lack the incentive to increase their productivityB.cannot get a share in the company’s profitsC.can still get bonuses for efficiency and productivityD.will not have the opportunity to purchase the plant 答案:BABAA。

The Storyteller1.Steven Spielberg has always had one goal:to tell as many great stories to as many people as will listen. And that’s what he has always been about. The son of a computer scientist and a pianist,Spielberg spent his early childhood in New Jersey and, later,Arizona. From the very beginning, his fertile imagination filled his young mind with images that would later inspire his filmmaking.2.Even decades later,Spielberg says he has clear memories of his earliest years, which are the origins of some of his biggest hits.He believes that E.T.is the result of the difficult years leading up to his parent’s1966divorce,“It is really about a young boy who was in search of some stability in his life.”“He was scared of just about everything,”recalls his mother,Leah Adler.“When trees brushed againstthe house,he would head into my bed.And that’s just the kind of scary stuff he would put in films like Poltergeist.”3.Spielberg was11when he first got his hands on his dad’s movie camera and began shooting short flicks about flying saucers and World WarΙΙbattles.Spielberg’s talent for scary storytelling enabled him to make friends. On Boy Scout camping trips, when night fell,Spielberg became the center of attention.“Steven would start telling his ghost stories,”says Richard Y.Hoffman Jr.,leader of Troop294,“and everyone would suddenly get quiet so that they could all hear it.”4.Spielberg moved to California with his father and went to high school there, but his grades were so bad that he barely graduated. Both UCLA and USC film schools rejected him,so he entered California State University at Long Beach because it was close to Hollywood.Spielberg was determined to make movies, and he managed to get an unpaid,non-credit internship(实习)in Hollywood.Soon he was given a contract, and he dropped out of college. He never looked back.5.Now,many years later,Spielberg is still tellingstories with as much passion as the kid in the tent.Ask him where he gets his ideas,Spielberg shrugs.“The process for me is mostly intuitive(凭直觉的),”he says.“There are films that I feel I need to make, for a variety of reasons, for personal reasons, for reasons that I want to have fun, that the subject matter is cool, that I think my kids will like it.And sometimes I just think that it will make a lot of money, like the sequel(续集)to Jurassic Park.”23.Paragraph1___F___24.Paragraph2____A_____25.Paragraph3____E_____26.Paragraph4____D_____A.Inspirations for his moviesB.The trouble of making moviesC.A funny manD.Getting into the movie businessE.Telling stories to make friendsF.An aim of life27.Some of Spielberg’s most successful movies came from ____E___28.When Spielberg was a boy,he used to be scared of ____A_____29.Spielberg is very good at_____B____30.Spielberg says he makes movies for____C____A.almost everythingB.telling scary storiesC.a number of reasonsD.making children laughE.his childhood memoriesF.a lot of money。

六、Car Thieves could Be Stopped Remotely 远程制止偷车贼Speeding off in a stolen car, the thief thinks he has got a great catch. But he is in a nasty surprise. The car is fitted with a remote immobilizer and a radio signal from a control center miles away will ensure that once the thief switches the engine1off, he will not be able to start it again. For now, such devices 2 are only available for fleets of trucks and specialist vehicles used on construction sites. But remote immobilization technology could soon start to trickle down to ordinary cars, and 3should be available to ordinary cars in the UK 4in two months. The idea goes like this. A control box fitted to the carincorporates5a miniature cellphone, a microprocessor and memory, and a GPS satellite positioning receiver. 6If the car is stolen, a coded cellphone signal will tell the unit to block the vehicle’s engine management system and prevent the engine7being restarted. There are even plans for immobilizers 8that shut down vehicles on the move, though there are fears over the safety implications of such a system. In the UK. an array of technical fixes is already making 9life harder for car thieves. “The pattern of vehicles crime has changed,” says Martyn Randall of Thatcham, a security research organization based in Berkshire that is funded in part 10 by the motor insurance industry. He says it would only take him a few minutes to 11teach a novice how to steal a car, using a bare minimum of tools. But only if the car is more than 10 years old.Modern cars are a far tougher proposition, as their engine management computer will not 12allow them to start unless they receive a unique ID code beamed out by the ignition key. In the UK, technologies like this 13have helped achieve a 31 per cent drop in vehicle-related crime since 1997.But determined criminals are still managing to find other ways to steal cars. Often by getting hold of the owner’s keys in a burglary. In 2000, 12 per cent of vehicles stolen in the UK were taken using the owner’s keys double the p revious year’s figure.Remote-controlled immobilization system would 14put a major new obstacle in the criminal’s way by making such thefts pointless. A group that includes Thatcham, the police, insurance companies and security technology firms have developed standards for a system that could goon the market sooner than the15customer expects.七、智能汽车 An Intelligent CarDriving needs sharp eyes, keen ears, quick brain, and coordination between hands and the brain. Many human drivers have all (1) these and can control a fast-moving car. But how does an intelligent car control itself? There is a virtual driver in the smart car. This virtual driver has “eyes,”“brains”,“hands” and “feet”,too. The mini-cameras (2) on each side of the car are his “eyes,” whic h observe the road and conditions ahead of it. They watch the (3) traffic to the car’s left and right. There is also a highly (4) automatic driving system in the car. It is the built-in computer, which is the virtual driver’s “brain. ” His “brain” calculat es the speeds of (5) other moving cars near it and analyzes their positions. Basing on this information, it chooses the right (6) path for the intelligent cars, and gives (7) instructions to the “hands”and “feets”to act accordingly. In this way, the virtua l driver controls his car. What is the virtual driver’s best advantage? He reacts (8)quickly. The mini-cameras are (9)sending images continuously to the “brain”. It (10) completes the processing of the images within 100 milliseconds. However, the world’s best drier (11) at least needs one second to react. (12) Besides, when he takes action, he needs one more second. The virtual driver is really wonderful. He can reduce the accident (13) rate considerably on expressway. In this case. Can we let him have the wheel at any time and in any place? Experts (14) warn that we cannot do that just yet. His ability to recognize things is still (15) limited. He can now only drive an intelligent car on expressways.第八篇Why India Needs Its Dying VulturesThe vultures in question may look ugly and threatening, but the sudden sharp __1 decline __ in three species of India’s vultures is producing alarm rather than celebration, and it presents the world with a new kind of environmental __2 problem __ The dramatic decline in vulture numbers is causing widespread disruption to people living in the same areas as the __3 birds__ . It draws on data that came from NASA’s top planet-hunting telescope.A mechanical failure recently put that Kepler space telescope out of service. Kepler had played a big role in creating a census of planets orbiting some 170,000 stars. Its data have been helping astronomers predict how common planets are in our galaxy. The telescope focused on hunting planets that might have conditionssimilar to those on Earth. The authors of a study, published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of sciences, conclude that between 14 and 30 out of every 100 stars, with a mass and temperature similar to the Sun, may host a planet that could support life as we know it. Such a planet would hav e a diameter at least as large as Earth’s, but no more than twice that big. The planet also would have to orbit in a star’s habitable zone. That’s where the surface temperature would allow any water to exist as a liquid. The new estimate of how many planets might fit these conditions comes from studying more than 42,000 stars and identifying suitable worlds orbiting them. The scientists used those numbers to extrapolate (推算) to the rest of the stars that the telescope could not see.The estimate is rough, the authors admit. If applied to the solar system, it would define as habitable a zone starting as close to the Sun as Venus and running to as far away as Mars. Neither planet is Earthlike (although either might have been in the distant past). Using tighter limits, the researchers estimate that between 4 and 8 out of every 100 Sunlike stars could host an Earth-sized world. These are ones that would take 200 to 400 days to complete a yearly orbit.Four out of every 100 sunlike stars doesn’t sound like a big n umber. It would mean, however, that the Milky Way could host more than a billion Earth-sized planets with a change for life.16. The Kepler space telescope has been in service for 15 years.A. RightB. WrongC. There’s more carbon in the air, and Arctic ice is melting faster than at any time in recorded history. Scientist who study the environment to better gauge (评估) Earth’s fut ure climate now argue that these changes may not reverse for a very long time.2 People burn fossil fuels like coal and oil for energy. That burning releases carbon dioxide, a colorless gas. In the air, this gas traps heat at Earth’s surface. And the more carbon dioxide released, the more the planet warms. If current consumption of fossil fuels doesn’t slow, the long-term climate impacts could last thousands of years—and be more severe than scientists had been expecting. Climatologist Richard Zeebe of the University of Hawaii at Manoa offers this conclusion in a new paper.3 Most climate-change studies look at what’s going to happen in the next century or so. During that time, changes in the planet’s environment could nudge (推动) global warming even higher. For example: Snow and ice reflect sunlight back into space. But as these melt, sunlight can now reach—and warm—the exposed ground. This extra heat raises the air temperature even more, causing even more snow to melt. This type of rapid exaggeration of impac ts is called a “fast feedback”.4 Zeebe says it’s important to look at fast feedbacks. However, he adds, they’re limited. From a climate change perspective, “This century is the most important time for the next few generations, ” he told Science News. “But the world is not ending in 2100 .” For this new study, Zeebe now focuses on “slow feedbacks.” While fast feedback events unfold over decades or centuries, slow feedbacks can take thousands of years. Melting of continental ice sheets and the migration of plant life—as they relocate to more comfortable areas—are two examples of slow feedbacks.5 Zeebe gathered information from previously publishes studies investigating how such processes played out over thousands of years during past dramatic changes in climate. Then he came up with a forecast for the future that accounts for both slow and fast feedback processes. Climate forecasts that use only fast feedbacks predict a 4.5 degree Celsius (8.1 degree Fahrenheit) change by the year 3000. But slow feedbacks added another 1.5℃—for a 6℃ total increase, Zeebe reports. He also found that slow feedback events will cause warming to persist for thousands of years after people run out of fossil fuels to burn. 23. Paragraph 2 ___B____ 24. Paragraph 3 ___C____ 25. Paragraph 4 ___D____26. Paragraph 5 ___F____27. Arctic ice has never been melting so fast in ___D___. 28. Melting of snow and ice enables sunlight to reach ____A____. 29. It can be credited with many firsts in space.During Mir's lifetime, Russia spent about US$4.2 billion to build and maintain the station. The Soviet Union launched Mir, which was designed to last from three to five years, on February 20, 1986, and housed 104 astronauts over 12 years and seven months, most of whom were not Russian. In fact, it became the first international space station by playing host to 62 people from 11 countries. From 1995 through 1998, seven astronauts from the United States took turns living on Mir for up to six months each. They were among the 37 Americans who visited the station during nine stopovers by space shuttles. The more than 400 million the United States provided Russian for the visits not only kept Mir operating, but also gave the Americans and their partners in the international station project valuable experience in long-term flight and multinational operations.A debate continues over Mir’s contributions to s cience. During its existence, Mir was the laboratory for 23,000 experiments and carried scientific equipment, estimated to be worth $80 million, from many nations. Experiments on Mir are credited with a range of findings, from the first solid measurement of the ration of heavy helium atoms in space to how to grow wheat in space. But for those favouring human space exploration, Mir showed that people could live and work in space long enough for a trip to Mars. The longest single stay in space is the 437. 7 days that Russian astronaut Valery Polyakov spent on Mir from 1994 to 1995. And Sergie Avdeyev accumulated 747.6 days in space in three trips to the space station. The longest American stay was that of Shannon Lucid, who spent 188 days aboard Mir in 1996.Despite the many firsts Mir accomplished, 1997 was a bad year out of 15 for Mir.In 1997, an oxygen generator caught fire. Later, the main computer system broke down, causing the station to drift several times and there were power failures. Most of these problems were repaired, with American help and suppliers, but Mir's reputation as a space station was ruined.Mir’s setbacks are nothing, though, when we compare them with its accomplishments. Mire was a tremendous success, which will be remembered as a milestone in space exploration and the space station that showed long-term human habitation in space was possible. But it's time to move on to the next generation. The International Space Station being built will be better, but it owes a great debt to Mir.31. What can we learn from the passage that the Mir Space StationA. was designed to last 5 years.B. was built by Russians.C. played nost to 7 astronauts from different countries.D. was visited only by Americans.32. One of the contributions Mir makes to science is that itA. helps astronauts get close to Mars.B. enables scientists to develop new scientific equipment.C. sets a record of the longest single human stay in space.D. shows that multinational operations in space are less expensive.33. What happened to Mir in 1997?A. It ran out of its fund.B. It was completely damage by fire.C. Its main computer system broke down.D. Its reputation was ruined due to power failures.34. It can be inferred from the last paragraph thatA. space exploration will not experience setbacks.B. it is difficult for other space stations to exceed Mir’s success.C. Mir is the best long-term human habitation in space in history.D. multinational space operations are getting more accomplishments.35.What is the author’s attitude toward Mir?A. Favorable.B. Indifferent.C. Ironic.D. Negative.第二篇:Approaches to Understanding IntelligencesIt pays to be smart, but we are not all smart in the same way. You may be a talented musician, but you might not be a good reader. Each of us is different.Psychologists disagree about what is intelligence and what are talents or personal abilities. Psychologists have two different views on intelligence. Some believe there is one general intelligence. Others believe there are many different intelligences. Some psychologists say there is one type of intelligence that can be measured with IQ tests. These psychologists support their view with research that concludes that people who do well on one kind of test for mental ability do well on other tests. They do well on tests using words, numbers or pictures. They do well on individualor group tests, and written or oral tests. Those who do poorly on one test, do the same on all tests.Studies of the brain show that there is a biological basis for general intelligence. The brains of intelligent people use less energy during problem solving. The brain waves of people with high intelligence show a quicker reaction. Some researchers conclude that differences in intelligence result from differences in the speed and effectiveness of information processing by the brain.Howard Gardner, a psychologist at the Harvard School of Education, has four children. He believes that all children are different and shouldn’t be tested by one intelligence test. Although Gardner believes general intelligence exists, he thinks that the human mind has different intelligences. These intelligences allow us to solve the kinds of problems we are presented with in life. Each of us has different abilities within these intelligences. Gardner believes that the purpose of school should be to encourage development of all of our intelligences.Gardner says that his theory is based on biology. For example, when one part of the brain is injured, other parts of the brain still work. People who cannot talk because of brain damage can still sing. So, there is not just one intelligence to lose. Gardner has identified 8 different kinds of intelligence: linguistic, mathematical, spatial, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, body-kinesthetic (身体动觉的), and naturalistic.36. What is the main idea of this passage?A. How to understand intelligence.B. The importance of intelligence.C. The development of intelligence tests.D. How to become intelligent.37. Which of the following statements is true concerning general intelligence?A. Most intelligent people do well on some intelligence tests.B. People doing well on one type of intelligence test do well on other tests.C. Intelligent people do not do well on group tests.D. Intelligent people do better on written tests than on oral tests.38. Gardner believes thatA. children have different intelligencesB. all children are alike.C. children should take one intelligence test.D. there is no general intelligence.39. According to Gardner, schools shouldA. promote development of all intelligences.B. test students’ IQs.C. train students who do poorly on tests.D. focus on finding the most intelligent students.40. Gardner thinks that his theory has aA. musical foundation.B. intrapersonal foundation.C. linguistic foundation.D. biological foundation.第三篇:Eye-tracker Lots You Drag and Drop Files with a Glance Bored of using a mouse? Soon you'll be able to change stuff on your computer screen – and then move it directly onto your smart phone or tablet(平板电脑) –with nothing more than a glance.A system called Eye Drop uses a head-mounted eye tracker that simultaneously records your field of view so it knows where you are looking on the screen. Gazing at an object – a photo, say – and then pressing a key, selects that object. It can then be moved from the screen to a tablet or smart phone just by glancing at the second device, as long as the two are connected wirelessly."The beauty of using gaze to support this is that our eyes naturally focus on content that we want to acquire, "says Jayson Turner, who developed the system with colleagues at Lancaster University, UK.Turner believes Eye Drop would be useful to transfer an interactive map or contact information from a public display to your smart phone or for sharing photos.A button needs to be used to select the object you are looking at otherwise you end up with the "Midastouch"(点石成金) effect, whereby everything you look at gets selected by your gaze, says Turner. "Imagine if your mouse clicked on everything it pointed at," he says.Christian Holz, a researcher inhuman-computer interaction at Yahoo Labs in Sunnyvale, California, says the system is a nice take on getting round this fundamental problem of using gaze-tracking to interact. "Eye Drop solves this in a slick (灵巧的)way by combining it with input on the touch devices we carry with us most of the time anyway and using touch input as a clutching mechanism," he says. "This now allows users to seamlessly(无缝地) interact across devices far and close in a very natural manner."While current eye-trackers are rather bulky, mainstream consumer devices are not too far away. Swedish firm Tobii is developing gaze-tracking technology that can be installed in laptops and tablets and is expected to be available to buy next year. And the Google Glass headset is expected to include eye-tracking in the future.Turner says he has also looked at how content can be cut and pasted or drag-and-dropped using a mix of gaze and taps on a touch screen. The system was presented at the Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Multimedia in Sweden, last week.41. The eye-tracker technology enables us to______A. change our computer screen.B. focus on anything that interests us.C. get a smart phone connected wirelessly.D. move an object from screen with a glance.42. Why is a button needed?A. To minimize the cost of Eye Drop.B. To choose as many objects as possible.C. To make Eye Drop different from others.D. To select what we want.43. The word “this” in Paragraph 6 refers to_______A. application of gaze-tracking inhuman-computer interaction.B. interaction between human and computer.C. combination of gaze-tracking with input on touch devices.D. generalization of Eye Drop system.44. Which of the following statement is true of eye-trackers for consumer use?A. They are costly.B. They are available.C. They are installed in Google Glass headset.D. They are expected to come out soon.45. What is Turner likely to study next?A. How to drag and drop with gaze and taps.B. How to present the system in public.C. How to get touch screen involved.D. How to cut and paste content from a public display.补全短文:The Day a language DiedWhen Candos Westez died at the age of 76, a language died, too, Westez, more commonly known as Rad Thunder Cloud, was the last speaker of the Native American language, Catawba. The Storyteller1. Steven Spielberg has always had one goal: to tell as many great stories to as many people as will listen. And that’s what he has always been about. The son of a computer scientist and a pianist, Spielberg spent his early childhood in New Jersey and, later, Arizona. From the very beginning, his fertile imagination filled his young mind with images that would later inspire his filmmaking.2. Even decades later, Spielberg says he has clear memories of his earliest years, which are the origins of some of his biggest hits. He believes that E.T. is the result of the difficult years leading up to his parent’s 1966 divorce, “It is really about a young boy who was in search of some stability in his life.”“He was scared of just about everything,” recalls his mother, Leah Adler. “When trees brushed against the house, he would head into my bed. And that’s just the kind of scary stuff he would put in films like Poltergeist.”3. Spielberg was 11 when he first got his hands on his dad’s movie camera and began shooting short flicks about flying saucers and World War ΙΙ battles. Spielberg’s talent for scary storytelling enabled him to make friends. On Boy Scout camping trips, when night fell, Spielberg became the center of attention. “Steven would start telling his ghost stories,” says Richard Y. Hoffman Jr., leader of Troop 294, “and everyone would suddenly get quiet so that they could all hear it.”4. Spielberg moved to California with his father and went to high school there, but his grades were so bad that he barely graduated. Both UCLA and USC film schools rejected him, so he entered California State University at Long Beach because it was close to Hollywood. Spielberg wasdetermined to make movies, and he managed to get an unpaid, non-credit internship(实习)in Hollywood. Soon he was given a contract, and he dropped out of college. He never looked back.5. Now, many years later, Spielberg is still telling stories with as much passion as the kid in the tent. Ask him where he gets his ideas, Spielberg shrugs. “The process for me is mostly intuitive (凭直觉的),” he says. “There are films that I feel I need to make, for a variety of reasons, for personal reasons, for reasons that I want to have fun, that the subject matter is cool, that I think my kids will like it. And sometimes I just think that it will make a lot of money, like the sequel(续集) to Jurassic Park.”23. Paragraph 1______24. Paragraph 2______25. Paragraph 3______26. Paragraph 4______A.
