forever/adv.(=for ever)永远;总是

【用法】forever不用于完全否定句,一般不用于进行时,只有在表示经常的、令人不快的事时才可用于进行时。

forever常用来修饰静态动词。

例如:I shall love my work forever. 我会一辈子热爱我的工作。

【助记】land(陆地)-lend(借出)
【用法】lend指“借出”,就主语而言,“某人把某物借给他人”。

常用句型:lend sb. sth.或 lend sth. to sb. ;borrow指“借入”,就主语而言,“某人向他人借某物”,常用句型为:borrow sth. from sb. 例如:He often borrows money from me.他常向我借钱。

go over过一遍;仔细检查
【例句】I went over what I had write again and again so that I wouldn’t make any mistakes.
我一遍又一遍地检查我写的东西,以免出错。

make a mistake犯错误
【例句】He who makes no mistakes, makes nothing. 不犯错误的人必然一事无成。

【用法】huge指超越一定标准大的事物,用在比喻中可形容抽象事物,指某事严重或急需解决。

grateful/adj. 感激的;表示感谢的

tail/n. 尾巴;尾部
【例句】When an animal wags its tail, or puts its ears straight up, then I know it’s grateful.

lonely/adj. 狐独的;寂寞的
【例句】This is often true for older people who are very lonely.
对于那些非常孤独的老人来说,往往如此。

She was extremely lonely. 她极其孤独。

【助记】lonely(狐独的)→lovely(adj.可爱的)
【用法】lonely一般用作形容词,意思是“孤独的”“寂寞的”,可作表语、定语,带有强烈的感情色彩,常用来表示心灵上的寂寞和忧郁;指地点时,表示“荒废的”“偏僻的”。

alone可作形容词,习惯上只作表语,强调没有另外的人在场时的“单独一人”,并不指心理上的感受,如寂寞、孤独等,alone也可作副词。

例如:I live alone in a lonely village, but I don’t feel lonely.我独自住在一个偏僻的村庄,但我并不感到孤独。

【例句】To be a doctor for animals is very rewarding. 当兽医很值得。

make up one’s mind下决心
【例句】After Herriot graduated from high school, he made up his mind to be a vet, especially for dogs. 赫里奥特高中毕业后,决定做个兽医,尤其是为狗看病的兽医。

He makes up his mind to be an inventor. 他下决心当一位发明家。

【用法】make up one’s mind to do sth. 表示“下决心去做某事”。

与mind有关的词组有:never mind 没关系;change one’s mind改变注意。

mostly/adv. 主要地;大部分
【例句】Mostly, vets helped heal horses, cows, sheep and pigs.
兽医主要帮助治愈马、牛、羊和猪。

The work is mostly done. 工作基本上做好了。

【例句】My grandma keeps a pig and two hens. 我奶奶养了一头猪和两只母鸡。

treat/v. 治疗;对待
【例句】He treated the animal cruelly. 他残忍地对待这只动物。

He didn’t treat the subject very fully. 他对这个问题的讨论不很充分。

【用法】treat…as…(把……当作……)例如:Don’t treat him as a child. 不能把他当作小孩子看待。

before long不久以后
【例句】Before long, Herriot noticed that people in the country also had dogs as pets.
不久,赫里奥特注意到乡下人也把狗视为宠物。

I hope to see you before long. 我希望不久能见到你。

【用法】before long意思是“不久以后”,相当于soon,后面不接从句,例如:We shall finish the work before long. 我们不久就将结束这项工作。

long before意思是“很久以前”,通常指在预定时间前或某事发生前很久,后面接名词或从句:例如:He arrived long before the time.他在预定时间前就到了。

keep/(kept, kept)v. 饲养;照顾
【例句】He himself kept two dogs, Hector and Dan. 他自己养了两条狗,赫克托和丹。

experience/n. 经验;体验
【例句】Later in his life, James Herriot wrote a lot about his experience as a country vet in Yorkshire, England.

【用法】as if表示“好像”,意思同”as though”一样,常引导表示状态的从句,从句中常用过去式。

【例句】No. 52 Middle School beat us 5:3. 52中以5比3击败了我们。

【用法】beat作“打败”时,其宾语为比赛的对手。

例如:We are sure to beat them. 我们肯定会打败他们。

beat sb.(in, at)sth. 赢了某人在某个方面。

例如:He beat me at chess.他下棋赢了我。

win 一般强调赢了什么比赛。

Our class won the football match yesterday. 我们班昨天赢了足球比赛。

【用法】by the time表示“到……时候”,注意其主句谓语时态的用法:动作动词常用完成时态。

deserve/v. 应得;值得……
【例句】They played carelessly, and they deserved to lose.

A good student deserves praise. 好学生应该受到表扬。

【用法】deserve “应受,值得”,可作及物动词。

deserve也可作不及物动词,常用deserve to do sth. 意为“值得去做某事”。

例如:Good work deserves good pay. 好的工作应得到好的报酬。

confident/adj. 有自信的;确信的
【例句】The boys were too confident. 男生们太自信了。

I’m confident in him.我对他有信心。

【用法】confident作形容词,表示“有自信的,确信的”,其用法有:be confident of sth./be confident in sb. that+从句。

例如:He is confident of success.他确信能成功。

striker/n.(足球)前锋
【例句】Their best striker,Lu Ming,scored in the thirtieth minute.
