13、I grew up in the 1950s with very practical parents. My mother washed aluminum foil(铝箔纸)after she cooked in it, and then she reused it. She was the earliest recycle(回收)queen before people had a name for it.

My father was no different. He preferred getting old shoes fixed to -buying new ones. Their marriage was good and their dreams were focused(集中).Their best friends lived just a wave away. Though my parents have passed away, I can see them now - Dad in trousers, a T-shirt and a hat and Mom in a house dress, lawnmower(割草机)in one hand and dishtowel in the other.

It was the time to fix things -a curtain rod(挂帘杆),the kitchen radio, the screen door, the oven door, and so on. They fixed all things we had. It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing and renewing made me want to scream.1 wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant being rich. Throwing things away meant you knew there'd always be more. I often thought like that.

But then my mother died, and on that clear summer night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I learned that sometimes there isn't any more. Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away and it will never return. So, while we have it, it is the best that we love it, care for it, fix it when it's broken and cure it when it's sick.

This is true for marriage, old cars, children with bad report cards, dogs with bad hips and aging parents and grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it and because we are worth it.

1.We can learn that when the writer was young, she_______.

A.thought highly of her parents' habits

B.often helped her parents fix old things

C.often threw things away without being noticed

D.at times hated it when her parents fixed old things

2.What did the writer realize afier her mother's death?

A.Her mother truly loved her.

B.She had wasted a lot of money.

C.Things may never return once they are gone.

D.She had hurt her parents for many times.

3.What is the writer's purpose in writing the passage?

A.To advise us to love what we have.

B.To encourage us to recycle old things.

C.To explain why her parents recycled.

D.To help us know about life in the past.

14、Do you know how it is when you see someone yawn (打哈欠) and you start yawning too? Or how hard it is to be among people laughing and not laugh yourself? Well, obviously it’s because we have mirror neurons (神经元) in our brains.

Put simply, the presence of mirror neurons suggests that every time we see someone else do something, our brains model after it,whether or not we actually perform the same action. This explains a great deal about how we learn to smile, talk, walk, dance or play sports. But the idea goes further:mirror neurons not only appear to explain physical actions, they also tell us that there is a biological basis for the way we understand other people.

Mirror neurons can undoubtedly be found all over our brains, but especially in the areas which relate to our ability to use languages, and to understand how other people feel. Researchers have found that mirror neurons relate strongly to language. A group of researchers discovered that if they gave people sentences to listen to (for example:“The hand took hold of the ball”),the same mirror neurons weretriggeredas when the action was actually performed (in this example, actually taking hold of a ball).

Any problems with mirror neurons may well result in problems with behavior. Much research suggests that people with social and behavioral problems have mirror neurons which are not fully functioning (行使职责). However,it is not yet known exactly how these discoveries might help find treatments for social disorders. Research into mirror neurons seems to provide us with ever more information about how humans behave, communicate and spend time together. Indeed,it may turn out to be nearly the same important thing for neuroscience as what Einstein’s theory of relativity (相对论) was for physics. And the next time you have the strong feeling to cough in the cinema when someone else does – well, perhaps you’ll understand why. 1.Mirror neurons can explain ______.

A.why we cry when we are hurt

B.why we cough when we catch a cold

C.why we smile when we see someone else smile

D.why we yawn when we see someone else get up late

2.The word “triggered” in Paragraph 3 probably means “______”.

A.set off B.cut off

C.broken out D.found out

3.We can learn from the passage that mirror neurons _______.

A.relate to human behavior and communication

B.decide our knowledge and language abilities

C.result in bad behavior and social disorders

D.control human actions and appearances

4.What is the passage mainly about?

A.Ways to find mirror neurons.

B.Problems of mirror neurons.

C.Discovery of mirror neurons.

D.Functions of mirror neurons.

No one is glad to hear that his body has to be cut open by a surgeon(外科医生) and part of it is taken out. Today, however, we needn't worry about feeling pain during the operation. The sick person falls into a kind of sleep, and when he awakes, the operation is finished. But these happy conditions are fairly new. It is not many years since a man who had to have an operation felt all its pain.

Long ago, operations had usually to be done while the sick man could feel everything. The sick man had to be held down on a table by force while the doctors did their best for him. He could feel all the pain if his leg or arm was being cut off, and his fearful cries filled the room and the hearts of those who watched.

Soon after 1770, Josept Priestley discovered a gas which is now called "laughing gas". Laughing gas became known in America. Young men and women went to parties to try it. Most of them spent their time laughing, but one man at a party, Horace Wells, noticed that people didn't seem to feel pain when they were using this gas. He decided to make an experiment on himself. He asked a friend to help him.

Wells took some of the gas, and his friend pulled out one of Well's teeth. Wells felt no pain at all. As he

didn't know enough about laughing gas, he gave a man less gas than he should have. The man cried out with pain when his tooth was being pulled out.

Wells tried again, but this time he gave too much of the gas, and the man died. Wells never forgot this terrible event.

1.It is ____ since a man being operated felt all the pain.

A.a few more years B.not very long

C.few years D.two thousand years

2.Long ago, when the sick man was operated on, he ____.

A.could feel nothing B.could not want anything

C.could feel all the pain D.could do anything

3.Using the laughing gas, the people did not seem to ____.

A.be afraid of anything B.feel pain

C.want to go to the parties D.be ill

4.If a man took less laughing gas than he should have when an operation went on, he ____.

A.felt nothing B.felt very comfortable

C.still felt pain D.would die

5.One who took too much of the laughing gas ____.

A.would laugh all the time B.would die

C.would never feel again D.would be very calm

16、How many animals are killed for human use every year in the United States? The numbers are in the billions, and these are just the ones we know about. Let’s break it down.

How many animals are killed for food? According to Farm Animal Rights Movement, about 10 billion land animals are killed every year for food in the United States, and about 58 billion are killed around the world. What’s more, this does not even include wild animals.

How many animals are killed for experiments? From 17 million to 100 million! The numbers are difficult to tell because most animals used in experiments are not reported.

How many animals are killed for fur? Every year, over 40 million animals are killed for fur around the world. About 30 million animals are raised on fur farms and killed, about 10 million wild animals are killed for fur, and this does not include sea animals and those that are injured and die later.

How many animals are killed by hunters? According to In Defense of Animals, hunters kill the most animals every year. Over 200 million animals are killed by hunters in the United States every year. This does not include animals that are injured and die later and those who die after their mothers are killed.

If these numbers are shocking enough for you and you want to do something to help, act out at this very moment. Refuse wild animals on dinner tables, say no to fur coats and try your best to protect the environment. Also, don’t forget to tell the numbers above to the people around you.

18、We often praise the world of science.

It explains the world and makes our lives easier with technology. One of the most exciting fields in science is artificial intelligence (人工智能AI). This is an area where scientists are working on creating machines that think like humans.

However, one of the most famous scientists has a very dark warning for us about this type of technology. “The development of artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race,” said Professor Stephen Hawking to the BBC.

Hawking is a well-known British scientist and writer of bestselling science book A Brief History of Time. This warning came after he used the machine particularly made for him. As Hawking suffers from a serious disease called ALS, he needs an AI computer to communicate. The computer learns how Hawking thinks and suggests the words he may want to use next.

Thisis a basic type of AI, which is very useful, yet Hawking is frightened of the possibility of creating technology that can match or surpass human intelligence. And it’s easy to imagine how terrible things may be. Many TV shows and films display big, killer machines that are far cleverer than us. “Humans can’t compete because they are limited by slow biological evolution (生物进化),” said Hawking.
