In 1929, three years after his flight over the North Pole, the American explorer, R.E Byrd, successfully flew over the South Pole for the first time. Though, at first, Byrd and his men were able to take a great many photographs of the mountains that lay below, they soon ran into serious trouble. At one point, it seemed certain that their plane would crash. It could only get over the mountains if it rose to 10,000 feet. Byrd at once ordered his men to throw out two heavy food sacks. The plane was then able to rise and it cleared the mountains by 400 feet. Byrd now knew that he would be able to reach the South Pole which was 300 miles away, for there were no more mountains in sight. The aircraft was able to fly over the endless white plains without difficulty.

Lesson43 Hurry up!
of course: 当然;另外表达方式还有:certainly,surely(当然);kettle:水壶;

(1)behind是指方位的前后,在…….的后面;
(2)after是指时间或顺序的先后,在….之后;
behind的反义词是in front of,表示在….

teapot: 茶壶;
They are doing their homework now.

now可以与at the moment互换,多见于同义句转换题型。

Ican not find my English books .

I am looking for my English books.

We must find out the truth.

1. Is there any water in the kettle?
There is a book on the table.

There is some water in the bottle.

There are a lot of children in the classroom.

(3)some一般用于肯定句,any多用于疑问句和否定句例:I want some water:我想喝点水;
I do not want any water:我不想喝水;
Would you like some water?
Would you like some apples?
2. Can you find them?
情态动词虽然具有实际意义,但却不能单独作谓语;
必须与后边的动词一起作谓语;
无人称数的变化(have to除外);

需要掌握的几个情态动词的用法:can, may, must,have to, need的用法:
Can的用法:
I can swim.我会游泳;
Can you help me?
Could you help me?
Yes, I can.

(3)can表示“能力”时,可以与be able to互换,例:
I can move the heavy box.

I am able to move the heavy box.

Must的用法:
(1)must表示“命令”语气,意思是“必须….”“一定…..”You must go now.

Must I go to see the doctor?
You mustn't speak here.

Must I go now?
Yes, you must. 是的,你必须走;
No, you needn't.不,你不必现在走;
(4)must表示“推测”,一般用于肯定句,意思是“必定…”: It must be ture.那必定是真的;
She must be reading a book.
