Most Americans have done it. According to a study, 54% of Americans unwrap, rebox and resend unwanted presents.Regifting has gained in popularity since comedian Jerry Seinfeld first coined the term a decade ago. In fact, more than half of adults recently surveyed by Money Management International (MMI) find regifting acceptable. If you are thinking about regifting this holiday season, ask yourself the following questions: Is the gift regiftable? Never regift things like signed books. But some gifts are good for regifting, including unopened bottles of wine and inexpensive jewelry. How is the condition? Only new, unopened gifts in good condition should be considered for regifting. A general rule: if you have to dust it off, it is not regiftable. Is this going to work? Successful regifters use common sense. If you are going to regift, be sure you know who gave you the item, so you don't return something to the original giver.Do you have good intentions? Don't just give a gift to give a gift. Does a bowl of soup really threaten the survival of sharks? Well, yes, it does.Shark fin soup is a soup of Chinese origin made with shark fin. It is often served to guests at important events such as weddings and business banquets. Shark fin soup is not cheap - it can easily cost up to $100 per bowl. And it is being consumed in largest quantities.Shark fin can be bought either frozen or dried. The soup is often said to have health benefits, such as increasing your appetite, improving your kidneys (肾) , lungs and bones. However there is no evidence to support these claims and the reality is that shark meat is barely fit for human consumption. It has a very high level of mercury (汞) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency advises women and young children to stay clear of it.A survey in 2006 by the Chinese Wildlife Association showed that 35% of participants had had shark fin soup in the previous year. The current demand for their fins makes it impossible for shark populations to return to previous levels. Sharks are at the top of ocean food chain -when they are removed from the ocean, the entire eco-system suffers.Sharks have been around for 400 million years. Yet many millions of people around the world face water shortages. Many millions of children die every year from water-borne diseases. And drought regularly affects some of the world's poorest countries. The world needs to respond much better. We need to increase water efficiency, especially in agriculture. We need to make sanitation (卫生) a matter of vital importance. This is where progress is needed most. And we must show that water resources need not be a source of conflict. Instead, they can be a means for cooperation. Significant gains have been made. But a major effort is still required. That is why this year marks the beginning of the "Water for Life" Decade. Our goal is to meet the internationally agreed targets for water by 2015, and to build the foundation for further progress in the years beyond. This is an urgent matter of human development. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday—at 4:30 in the morning.I wasn't too happy about getting up that early. A lot of times, I'd fall asleep right there at the kitchen table. Now I've given a lot of speeches about education. And I've talked a lot about responsibility. But at the end of the day, we can have the most devoted teachers, the most supportive parents, and the best schools in the world - - and none of it will matter unless you show up to those schools; pay attention to those teachers; listen to your parents; and put in the hard work it takes to succeed. And that's what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education. But far from being the latest GM monster ( 转基因怪物),it is entirely natural.Called the TomTato, each plant can produce more than 500 sweet cherry tomatoes as well as some white potatoes. It is createdd using a hi-tech grafting (嫁接) process and just went on sale to gardeners in the UK for the first time.It began 15 years ago when Paul Hansord, a horticultural (园艺的) director, was on a trip to the US. He spotted a potato plant growing separately under a tomato plant and learned that it is possible to graft the two together because they belong to the same family. His biggest problem was how to develop the idea so the plants could be sold commercially. The problem had been how to produce tiny potato plants which have stems (茎) the same thickness as tomatoes, so that the two can be joined together perfectly. But after a process of trial and error, and with the help of grafting specialists, they hit upon a method using a variety of potato that produces the right size shoot.Careful variations in the temperature at which the tomato and potato are grown are also made to ensure the two plants are a perfect match before being joined together.9.
