A cup of cocoa before going to bed or a Mars bar on the bus – the British are obsessed with it. The average Briton eats 10kg of chocolate a year. Women eat far more chocolate than men an amazing 67% of total chocolate consumption. And the most popular snack is KitKat – fifty are eaten every second in the UK.Chocoholics are people with a chocolate obsession. But are they addicts? Not according to recent research. This shows that chocolate is not as addictive as coffee – in fact, there is no proof that chocolate creates addiction at all. And it’s a lot better for you than we thought. Some scientists say that it releases the same chemicals t hat your body produces when you are in love. Now that can’t be a bad thing! Some more good news –it doesn’t raise your cholesterol level or give you acne as people believe and it can even be good for your teeth! It does however contain caffeine and is bad if you get headaches. So the least sensible time to eat it is at night. The British love chocolate but they are not as obsessed as the Swiss. Lucy loves new technology. She owns a games console an MP3 plaxxxxyer and a mobile phone with a built-in digital camera. David is a teacher. Lucy is his student.Like Lucy many children grow up using computers almost every day and often know more about technology than adults. Educator Marc Prensky calls children like Lucy “digital natives”. Digital natives can quickly learn how to use new gadgets and new software while non-digital natives spend a lot of time reading manuals and worrying about computer viruses. In fact many parents try to save time by asking their children to teach them how to use new technology! The divide between digital natives and non-digital natives can cause problems at school because students and teachers grow up with very different ideas about technology. Many teachers think thatplaying computer games is a waste of time and that technology has made children unable to concentrate. However many students think their classes are slow and boring and want to use computers to study.Prensky believes that digital natives have learned a lot from technology but that they learn things in a different way. For example reading a website is different from reading a book so digital natives are good at finding the information they need and choosing what they want to read. So perhaps teachers need to change the way they teach and use more technology in class – because the number of digital natives will keep increasing!1 David is a digital native.2 Marc Prensky is interested in teaching with technology.3 Digital natives are comfortable using laptops and flash drives.4 Many teachers think computer games are only for having fun or killing time.5 People read books and websites in the same way.Key: FTTTF1.From: U10L2 P153SpanglishIn which city can you read signs like “Aparca your car aqu” or “Cuidado con los pickpockets”? Travelguide investigates.1.2 million Hispanics live in the Big Apple and one in five New Yorkers speaks Spanish at home. In the last ten years the Hispanic population has grown by 400 000. This reflects the enormous increase in the Hispanic population in the States. There are now 42 million Hispanics resident in the USA representing 15% of the total population. There is a new language SPANGLISH – a strange mixture of Spanish and English – which is invading the city. The New York Times recently said that it had become the city’s third official language. Its use is colloquial and often limited to short sentences and signs. Many New Yorkers now wear socketines on their feet drop something on the carpeta shop for grocerias and have cornfley (“cornflakes”) for breakfast.Norma Rodríguez a 45-year-old Cuban living in Washington Heights says it forms a part of her life now: “Sometimes you don’t realize that you’re mixing the two languages. You just hear them both all the time and find that you’re inventing new words.” Other people however are fighting against this new street language. Businessman Juan Cortés sees it as a sign that the Spanish language is being destroyed. “It’s difficult but I try no t to speak it –it feels vulgar to me.”Meanwhile a surprising number of academics have spoken in favour of Spanglish. José María Ruiz from NY State University even runs courses in Spanglish and has written a dictionary. “It is a dialogue between two languages and cultures. We have to accept that languages change and evolve. The only languages that never change are dead ones.”1 The Spanish-speaking population has grown very fast recently.2 More people are interested in studying Spanish than before.3 Spanglish is mainly used in formal contexts.4 Norma Rodríguez doesn’t notice when she is speaking Spanglish.5 Juan Cortés doesn’t speak Spanglish because he feels stupid when he tries.Key: TTFTF1.阅读选择题(7篇)Reading: Read the article and choose the best choice for each question.1.From: U1L2 P10London: Melting Pot of CulturesDid you know that London is one of the most multicultural cities in the world? Here there are about 300 different cultures living side by side. Forget tea and sandwiches now it is more common for a Londoner to drink cappuccino for breakfast and eat Thai food for lunch in the local pub. Let’s see how life has changed in Britain’s capital.A IndiaMost people from India arrived in London in the 1950s and 60s. Now there is a strong Asian presence here –in the shops markets and of course the restaurants. In fact curry is Britain’s favorite takeaway meal. A typical family has a curry every two weeks either delivered or bought ready-made from the supermarket. Indian people live all over London. Southall in the far west of the city is one of many places well known for its Indian culture.B PolandThis community represents more than 1% of the UK’s total population and is growing rapidly. In London many Polish people live in the Hammersmith area in the west of the city. Here there are several Catholic churches and delicatessens which sell the country’s specialities such as beetroot soup (barszcz) or Polish cakes and snacks. Were they right to come? Young Poles say they can easily earn three times as much money here as at home where unemployment remains high.C West Africa。

We had First, starting with a greeting and ending with a closure may seem old-fashioned, but it avoids upsetting people by appearing rude. It needn't be Dear Sir or Madam, and Yours faithfully, but just say Hi or Hello or Dear (and a first name), then close with Regards (for more formal contacts ) and Cheers or Bye for friends. In offices and with people you know well and email frequently, you can just begin with their first name.Getting emails that are not directly relevant to you is very irritating. Having wide mailing group lists doesn't necessarily keep people informed. It is estimated that 40% of all emails are deleted immediately because they have an irrelevant or frivolous subject-line. Try to organize your mailing groups accurately and keep updating your mailing lists regularly. If you don't do this, your messagesmay not get through to the people you want to send them to because they delete them automatically without reading them. If your contact is used to deleting irrelevant emails from you, they may also delete any relevant ones automatically.Emails are usually quick and casual - they should convey a simple message. If you need to send important documents or letters 一always send them as an attachment and use all the normal formal writing conventions. The receiver can then download the attachment and save it or print it out for careful reference. Finally, using acronyms and smiley that your reader doesn't understand is very frustrating. America Online (AOL), the biggest internet service provider, list 181 common acronyms and 60 common smiley. Try to use ones that you are sure your reader will understand.第四部分:阅读理解(单选)短文理解1:Blocks of''high-rise" flats have been built in large numbers in London and in many other big cities. Just after the Second World War these big, twenty-to-thirty storey buildings, hundreds of feet in height, were thought to be the ideal solution to the housing problem. For on the one hand, there was severe housing shortage, but on the other hand, there was lack of space to build houses in urban areas. Blocks of "high-rise" flats seemed, at first, to be able to solve the problem, since they can offer space for more families to live in on less land. The beautiful, modem apartments in the high-rises were much sought after by people who lived downtown. Hundreds of the vast blocks had been built before anyone began to doubt about whether they were good solutions or not. Are they suitable places for people, children especially, to live in? A well-known British architect, who personally designed many of these buildings, now believes that the high-rises may well make those people who have been housed in them suffer a great deal. Evidence has been collected by social workers, which suggests that people do suffer. They complain about severe loneliness and deep depression living within these great towers. People also talk about lack of communication with others, no easy access to a playground for children, no chances for adults to get familiarized with each other. Many people say that they have lived next door to each other for years in the same building, but they never know who their neighbors are. Some experts say that a large number of people living in the high-rises suffer from mental disorder and have even developed criminal tendencies. As a result of these new discoveries, plans for new high-rise blocks are being reconsidered. We are now building up many high-rises in big cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Perhaps we should also reconsider the idea too. There was a big housing problem after the Second World War .C.in many big cities meal inclusive in the price of the room. Here are some tips and ideas for improving your email writing.First, starting with a greeting and ending with a closure may seem old-fashioned, but it avoids upsetting people by appearing rude. It needn’t be Dear Sir or Madam, and Yours faithfully, but just say Hi or Hello or Dear (and a first name),then close with Regards (for more formal contacts ) and Cheers or Bye for friends. In offices and with people you know well and email frequently, you can just begin with their first name. Getting emails that are not directly relevant to you is very irritating. Having wide mailing group lists doesn’t necessarily keep people informed . It is estimated that 40% of all emails are deleted immediately because they have an irrelevant or frivolous subject-line. Try to organize your mailing groups accurately and keep updating your mailing lists regularly. If you don’t do this, your messages may not get through to the people you want to send them to because they delete them automatically without reading them. If your contact is used to deleting irrelevant emails from you, they may also delete any relevant ones automatically.Emails are usually quick and casual – they should convey a simple message. If you need to send important documents or letters – always send them as an attachment and use all the normal formal writing conventions. The receiver can then download the attachment and save it or print it out for careful reference. Finally, using acronyms and smiley that your reader doesn’t understand is very frustrating. America Online (AOL), the biggest internet service provider, list 181 common acronyms and 60 common smiley. Try to use ones that you are sure your reader will understand. 第四部分:阅读理解(单选)短⽂理解1:Blocks of “high -rise” flats have been built in large numbers in London and in many other big cities. Just after the Second World War these big, twenty-to-thirty storey buildings, hundreds of feet in height, were thought to be the ideal solution to the housing problem. For on the one hand, there was severe housing shortage, but on the other hand, there was lack of space to build houses in urban areas. Blocks of “high -rise” flats seemed, at first, to be able to solve the problem, since they can offer space for more families to livein on less land. The beautiful, modern apartments in the high –rises were much sought after by people who lived downtown. Hundreds of the vast blocks had been built before anyone began to doubt about whether they were good solutions or not. Are they suitable places for people, children especially, to live in A well-known British architect, who personally designed many of these buildings, now believes that the high-rises may well make those people who have been housed in them suffer a great deal. Evidence has been collected by social workers, which suggests that people do suffer. Theycomplain about severe loneliness and deep depression living within these great towers. Perhaps we should also reconsider the idea too.1.There was a big housing problem after the Second WorldWar ____.C.in many big cities2.Blocks of “high-rise” flats were thought to be the idealsolution to the housing problem, because ___.D.they were built on less land and were able to housea lot more people3.The sentence “Hundreds of the vast blocks had been builtbefore anyone began to doubt about whether they were good solutions or not.” means ___.it was not until hundreds of the vast blocks had been built, people began to doubt about whether they were good solutions or not4.The author takes a well-known British architect as anexample to show us that __.B.even a well-known designer of the high-rises believesthey are no good for people5.What is the greatest danger for people living in ahigh-rise according to some experts C.Developing criminal tendencies.短⽂理解2:Sura Elmer came to Shanghai last July from the Netherlands, and will remain here for the next couple of years. I've been living in the country for more than 10 years. It means quietness, privacy, harmony and peace for me.
Living in the country requires an active lifestyle. It involves activities like doing daily chores, preparing firewood for winter heating, feeding animals including pets and livestock, tending the garden, or securing fences, etc. For me, the most attractive activities are fishing, hunting and hiking. I enjoy seeing what nature has to offer everyday through a simple walk down the little trail, or a relaxing drive along the country road with patches of green grass ornamented with wildlife sightings of birds, moose, bears, deer, etc.

A三、阅读“Are you the happiest man in the world?” When asked this question, most people would say no. They don?t think they are thehappiest of the people around them. They would point out that one of their neig hbors is happier than any one of them, “DoctorFrank has a career himself. His wife is the most beautiful and well-educated lady in the community. No, I don?t think I amhappier than Doctor Frank. At least my career is not as successfulas his.”Most of us compare ourselves with anyone we think is happier --- a relative, a close friend or, often, someone we even hardly know. I once met a young man who struck me as particularly successful and happy. He spoke of his live for his beautifulwife and their daughters, and of his joy at being a TV talk-show host. I remember thinking he was one of the lucky few forwhom everything goes effortlessly right. Once we talked about the Internet, he is grateful for its existence. He told me, because he could look up information on diabetes (糖尿病)--- the terrible disease that made his wife suffer and could possibly be passed down to his lovely children. When I heard this, I felt like a fool for taking it for granted that nothing unhappy existed in his life. This made me think a lot and I soon drew one of the most significant conclusions about happiness: there is little relationbetween the situations of people?s lives and how happy they are. We all know people who are richer and have an easier life than others, yet they are essentially unhappy. And we know people who have suffered a great deal but generally remain happy.Unhappiness is like looking at something and fixing on even the smallest fault. As a bald man told me, “Whenever I enter a room, all I see is hair.”It is hard for us to give up the image of “being perfect.” As nothing is perfect, anyone can be unhappy. It takes no courage or effort to be unhappy. True happiness lies in struggling to be happy. 31.
