新词主要的、突出的特征就是新,而且来源广泛,它是英语词汇家族中的新成员。
有的新词经过约定俗成,固定下来;有的新词很快就被其它同类词语所取代;有的新词则像流星一样,刚刚闪了一下,便消失得无影无踪。
