On Friday evening last I received from His Majesty the mission to form a new administration. It was the evident will of Parliament and the nation that this should be conceived on the broadest possible basis and that it should include all parties.I have already pleted the most important part of this task. A war cabinet has been formed of five members, representing, with the Labor, Opposition and Liberals, the unity of the nation. It was necessary that this should be done in onesingle day on account of the extreme urgency and rigor of events. Other key positions were filled yesterday.I am submitting a further list to the King tonight. I hope to plete the appointment of principal Ministers during tomorrow. The appointment of other Ministers usually takes a little longer. I trust when Parliament meets againthis part of my task will be pleted and that the administration will be plete in all respects.I considered it in the public interest to suggest to the Speaker that the House should be summoned today. At the end of today's proceedings, the adjournment of the House will be proposed until May 2l with provisionfor earlier meeting if need be. Business for that will be notified to M. P. 's at the earliest opportunity.I now invite the House by a resolution to record its approval of the steps taken and declare its confidence in the new government. The resolution:"That this House weles the formation of a government representing the united and inflexible resolve of the nation to prosecute the war with Germany to a victorious conclusion."To form an administration of this scale and plexity is a serious undertaking in itself. But we are in the preliminary Phase of one of the greatest battles in history. We are in action at any other points-in Norway and in Holland-and we have to be prepared in the Mediterranean. The air battle is continuing, and many preparations have to be made here at home.In this crisis I think I may be pardoned if I do not address the House at any length today, and I hope that any of my friends and colleagues or for mer colleagues who are affected by the political reconstruction will make all allowances for any lack of ceremony with which it has been necessary to act.I say to the House as I said to Ministers who have joined this government, I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many months of struggle and suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I say it is to wage war by land, sea and air. War with all our might and with all the strength God has given us, and to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word, It is victory. Victory at all costs-victory in spite of all terrors-victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no survival.Let that be realized. No survival for the British Empire, no survival for all that the British Empire has stood for, no survival for the urge, the impulse of the ages, that mankind shall move forward toward his goal.I take up my task in buoyancy and hope. I feel sure that our cause will not be suffered to fail among men.I feel entitled at this juncture, at this time, to claim the aid of all and to say, "Come then, let us go forward together with our united strength." Friendship is a diamond buried in the earth; a treasure of great worth. But first it must be mined then faceted and shined. It takes pick and shovel and strain, enpassing time and enduring pain, until its grace is seen; a glittering gift of love that's shared between we three: First God, and you, then me.

In my opinion, success means brilliant achievement in our work.In other words,no matter what we do,making outstanding contributions to the development of our country and bringing help and happiness to others is success. To achieve success,we should, first of all, have a clear long-term goal in our life.Besides,we should have short term goals in different periods of life.As we know,it is these short term goals that make our long-term goal possible.Second,we should be both perseverant and hardworking.Whatever we do,there are always two possibilities:success and failure. We should never lose heart when we e across difficulties or when we are confronted with failure.Instead,we should learn from our experience, build up our confidence and work even harder and smarter towards our purpose.Third,we should follow the examples of those who are successful and learn from them. Finally,we should try to get along well with our classmates and colleagues. We should care for each other and help each other in our study, our work and our life, because team work is of great importance in the realization of our dream. But when it es to the question that which factor leads to success, opportunity or hard-work, different people will offer different answers. Some people think that opportunity is the first factor lead ing to success. They hold the idea, as a proverb saying, “Man proposes, god disposes”. Because almost all successful people have good luck and have caught their valuable opportunities, they believe that opportunity is a leading conndition of the success. If seizes and makes the best use of opportunity available, one can succeed surely. In summary, to them, chances and lucks play the most important role on the road to success. However, others maintain that “no pains, no gains” .Without exerting oneself, on e could never expect to achieve success in no matter what one is doing. As is known to all, there is no royal road to the summit of success. One is likely to succeed only when one has worked with whole-hearted devotion and perseverance. Those who are lazy, sloppy and indifferent to their work, those who never concentrate on work will definitely end in failure. On the whole, as far as they are concerned, hard-working is the decisive factor to success. In my view, both hard work and opportunity eventually matters. They are inseparable from each other, and put together, they make a great success. Hard work is to luck what fish is to water, and can be seen as an interior precondition of success. It lays the corner-stone for building a house while luck serves to cement it, to make the building bricks adherent to one another. They are the twins that contribute to success together. They are the factors from within and without respectively. We must work hard, make efforts and get prepared. When opportunities e, meet and make full use of them. Only in this way can we succeed one day. 14New Year's eve, is the day when I most like.Because mother said that the day can go to sleep in the morning, because even fell asleep will also be new firecrackers wake.On New Year's eve, in addition to being able to eat a lot of delicious things, can also receive a lot of red envelopes, you can also watch TV for a long long time, really is so happy.A red envelope is New Year's money, since ancient times, elders will send children lucky money on New Year's eve, seems to be a meaning of exorcism disaster, mother said to put "lucky money" in under the pillow, pillow to sleep on it.
Food and HealthThe food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to thediet as well, especially cancer of the colon. Different cultures are more prone to contract certain illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, government researchers realized that nitrates and nitrites, commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives, caused cancer. Yet, these carcinogenicadditives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things in the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef and poultry, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows. Sometimes similar drugs are administered to animals not for medicinal purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue. PotteryAncient people made clay pottery because they needed it for their survival. They used the pots they made for cooking, storing food, and carrying things from place to place. Pottery was so important to early cultures that scientists now study it to learn more about ancient civilizations. The more advanced the pottery in terms of decoration, materials, glazes and manufacture, the more advanced the culture itself. The artisan who makes pottery in North America today utilizes his or her skill and imagination to create items that are beautiful as well as functional, transforming something ordinary into something special and unique. The potter uses one of the Earth"s most basic materials, clay. Clay can be found almost anywhere. Good pottery clay must be free from all small stones and other hard materials that would make the potting process difficult. Most North American artisan potters now purchase commercially processed clay, but some find the clay they need rightin the earth close to where they work. The most important tools potters use are their own hands; however, they also use wire loop tools, wooden modeling tools, plain wire, and sponges. Plain wire is used to cut away the finished pot from its base on the potter"s wheel. After a finished pot is dried of all its moisture in the open air,it is placed in a kiln and fired. The first firing hardens the pottery, and it is then ready to be glazed and fired again. For areas where they do not want any glaze, such as the bottom of the pot, artisans paint on melted wax that will later burn off in the kiln. They then pour on the liquid glaze and let it run over the clay surface, making any kind of decorative pattern that they want. This is a picture of Tom’s family at home. The one behind Tom is his mother,Mary Black. She looks young. Her dress is orange.Tom’s father,John Black is in a white shirt. He looks old.Tom has asister. Her name is Sue.She is in a red blouse and a yellow skirt.A cat is in Sue’s arm. It’s a Chinese cat.Its name is Mimi. If You Have a Dream… [1]If you have a dream, don’t wait for some distant1 day to come.I t may be too late before you’ve even begun.[2]Be true to yourself first and foremost. The only important thingf in life is what you do with the time you spend here on earth.Don’t be afraid to follow your desires. They are neither silly nor selfish; take the time and do what makes you feel alive.Leave your fears and rearets in the past. Our eyes are placed in front because it’s more important to look ahead than to look back.Iff you look back, your journey is ended. You have only today to begin anew2 and follow your dreams, for in the end,all we have are our momories.[3]Do not quiet3 your dreams. When the twilight4 comes to us.let there be no excuses,no explanations,no regrets!【参考译文】[1]如果你有梦想,不要等到遥远的一天才去实现. 英语小文章(四): 求英语有趣的小文章(要有翻译)It"s,Not My FaultMother(reprimanding her small son):You mustn"t pull the cat"s tail. The players running on the field, their passion burning. The fierce competition, the shouts of the crowd. Isn't it exciting? It shows the charm of sports in the most vivid way.And let's not forget the process of an invention. The inventor's persistence, the countless experiments, the moment of success. How inspiring it is! First, a poetic prose unfolds before us, like a gentle breeze. "The seasons change, like a beautiful symphony. Spring brings new life, as if nature awakens from a deep slumber. Summer's heat ignites passions, and the world is a stage of vibrant colors. Autumn paints the landscape with golden hues, and leaves dance in the wind. Winter blankets the earth in silence, a time for reflection and tranquility. How magical the cycle of seasons is!"Next, a logical argumentative essay. "Technology, a double-edged sword! It has revolutionized our lives, but has it also made us more isolated? We can connect with the world at the touch of a button, but have we lost the art of face-to-face communication? Has it truly enhanced our quality of life, or has it created new problems?"Then, a thrilling excerpt from a novel. "In the dark alley, the shadows seemed to come alive. Her heart pounded as she heard footsteps approaching. Who was it? A friend or a foe? Every step brought her closer to the unknown. The tension was palpable, and she held her breath, waiting for what would unfold next. Would she escape this perilous situation or be trapped forever?"Dear readers, these are just a few examples of the diverse styles of writing. Explore, enjoy, and let your imagination soar!篇5History is like a vast ocean, filled with countless tales and lessons. Take, for instance, the fall of the Roman Empire. What caused such a mighty civilization to crumble? Was it internal corruption, external invasions, or a combination of both? It makes one wonder! The lessons we can draw from this are profound. We must be vigilant against complacency and corruption within our own societies. Another thought-provoking aspect is the rapid development of technology in our modern world. How has it changed the way we communicate and interact? Has it brought us closer together or made us more isolated? The answers are not straightforward. We need to carefully consider the impact of these changes on our lives. When it comes to classic literature, like "Pride and Prejudice", its charm lies in the intricate web of human relationships and emotions. Why has it remained so beloved over the years? Isn't it because it touches the core of our human nature? These are just a few examples that show the depth and complexity of our world, inviting us to think, question, and learn.。

Not until you realize that life itself is a beautiful thing will you really start to live. Although living combines tragedy with splendor, life is beautiful and even tragedies reflect something engaging. If you were simply to live, do more than that; live beautifully.
Through the sea of darkness, hope is the light that brings us comfort, faith, and reassurance. It guides our way if we are lost and gives us a foothold on our fears. The moment we lose hope is the moment we surrender our will to live. We live in a world that is disintegrating into a vicious hatred, where hope is needed more than ever but cannot be discerned. Finding that is rare while the world lives in fear, but the belief in something better, something bigger than this, is what keeps life worth living.

This Saturday nightis scattered with drunks, and for once, we are not the drunkest; we do not smell the worst. Late-night, paranoid tourists don’t even star e—a few ask for directions. They are eyes dazed with the work it takes to stay warm, and weary of the excess of privileged people. We are pushing reluctant time forward as it digs its heels in at the dusty smellsand sounds of old stories, at the sucking of smoke, at our involuntary shivers. She’s back again. The wrinkled hand, heavy with pleading, is now answering. She drops four warm quarters into my palm and says, “Get yourselves a cup of coffee. Merry Christmas.”The station gulps her up again before we can say thank you.Passage 18.I don’t think so 篇五Jack is a good boy but he doesn’t like to use his head. (Unit one Passage 1)I live in the land of Disney, Hollywood and year-round sun. You may think people in such a glamorous, fun-filled place are happier than others. If so, you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happiness. Many intelligent people still equate happiness with fun. The truth is that fun and happiness have little or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is what we experience after an act. It is a deeper, more abiding emotion. Going to an amusement par k or ball game, watching a movie or television, are fun activities that help us relax, temporarily forget our problems and maybe even laugh. But they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends.I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that happiness has nothing to do with fun. These rich, beautiful individuals have constant access to glamorous parties, fancy cars, expensive homes, everything that spells “happiness”. But in memoir a fter memoir, celebrities reveal the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun: depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, broken marriages, troubled children and profound loneliness. Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he’s honest, he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most dis tinguishing features. Similarly, couples that choose not to have children are deciding in favor of painless fun over painful happiness. They can dine out ever they want and sleep as late as they want. Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole n ight’s sleep or a three-day vacation. I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children.Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations we can ever come to. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberate s us from envy: we now understand that all those rich and glamorous people we were so sure are happy because they are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.1. Which of the following is true?A. Fun creates long-lasting satisfaction.B. Fun provides enjoyment while pain leads to happiness.C. Happiness is enduring whereas fun is short-lived.D. Fun that is long-standing may lead to happiness.2. To the author, Hollywood stars all have an important role to play that is to__.A. rite memoir after memoir about their happiness.B. tell the public that happiness has nothing to do with fun.C. teach people how to enjoy their lives.D. bring happiness to the public instead of going to glamorous parties.3. In the author’s opinion, marriage___.A. affords greater fun.B. leads to raising children.C. indicates commitment.D. ends in pain.4. Couples having infant children___.A. are lucky since they can have a whole night’s sleep.B. find fun in tucking them into bed at night.C. find more time to play and joke with them.D. derive happiness from their endeavor.5. If one get the meaning of the true sense of happiness, he will__.A. stop playing games and joking with others.B. make the best use of his time increasing happiness.C. give a free hand to money.D. keep himself with his family. (Unit one Passage 2)Once it was possible to define male and female roles easily by the division of labor. Men worked outside the home and earned the income to support their families, while women cooked the meals and took care of the home a nd the children. These roles were firmly fixed for most people, and there was not much opportunity for women to exchange their roles. But by the middle of this century, men’s and women’s roles were becoming less firmly fixed. In the 1950s, economic and social success was the goal of the typical American. But in the 1960s a new force developed called the counterculture. The people involved in this movement did not value the middle-class American goals. The counterculture presented men and women with new role choices. Taking more interest in childcare, men began to share child-raising tasks with their wives. In fact, some young men and women moved to communal homes or farms where the economic and childcare responsibilities were shared equally by both sexes. In addition, many Americans did not value the traditional male role of soldier. Some young men refused to be drafted as soldiers to fight in the war in V ietnam. In terms of numbers, the counterculture was not a very large group of people. But its influence s pread to many parts of American society. Working men of all classes began to change their economic and social patterns. Industrial workers and business executives alike cut down on “overtime” work so that they could spend more leisure time with their famil ies. Some doctors, lawyers, and teachers turned away from high paying situations to practice their professions in poorer neighborhoods. In the 1970s, the feminist movement, or women’s liberation, produced additional economic and social changes. Women of al l ages and at all levels of society were entering the work force in greater numbers. Most of them still took traditional women’s jobs as public school teaching, nursing, and secretarial work. But some women began to enter traditionally male occupations: po lice work, banking, dentistry, and construction work. Women were asking for equal work, and equal opportunities for promotion.Today the experts generally agree that important changes are taking place in the roles of men and women. Naturally, there are difficulties in adjusting to these transformations.1.Which of the following best express the main idea of Paragraph 1?A.Women usually worked outside the home for wages.B.Men and women’s roles were easily exchanged in the past.C.Men’s roles at home were more firml y fixed than women’s.D.Men and women’s roles were usually quite separated in the past.2.Which sentence best expresses the main idea of Paragraph 2?A. The first sentence.B. The second and the third sentences.C. The fourth sentence.D. The last sentence.3.In the passage the author proposes that the counterculture___.A. destroyed the United States.B. transformed some American values.C. was not important in the United States.D. brought people more leisure time with their families.4. It could be inferred from the passage that___.A. men and women will never share the same goals.B. some men will be willing to exchange their traditional male roles.C. most men will be happy to share some of the household responsibilities with their wives.D. more American households are headed by women than ever before.5. The best title for the passage may be ___.A. Results of Feminist MovementsB. New influence in American LifeC. Counterculture and Its consequenceD. Traditional Division of Male and Female Roles. (Unit one Passage 3)Recent research has claimed that an excess of positive ions in the air can have an ill effect on people’s physical or psychological health. What are positive ions? Well, the air is full of ions, electrically charged particles, and generally there is a rough balance between the positive and the negative charged. But sometimes this balance becomes disturbed and a larger proportion of positive ions are found. This happens naturally before thunderstorm, earthquakes when winds suc h as the Mistral, Hamsin or Sharav are blowing in certain countries. Or it can be caused by a build-up of static electricity indoors from carpets or clothing made of man-made fibres, or from TV sets, duplicators or computer display screens. When a large number of positive ions are present in the air many people experience unpleasant effects such as headaches, fatigue, irritability, and some particularly sensitive people suffer nausea or even mental disturbance. Animals are also affected, particularlybefore earthquakes, snakes have been observed to come out of hibernation, rats to flee from their burrows, dogs howl and cats jump about unaccountably. This has led the US Geographical Survey to fund a network of volunteers to watch animals in an effort to fores ee such disasters before they hit vulnerable areas such as California.Conversely, when large numbers of negative ions are present, then people have a feeling of well-being. Natural conditions that produce these large amounts are near the sea, close to wat erfalls or fountains, or in any place where water is sprayed, or forms a spray. This probably accounts for the beneficial effect of a holiday by the sea, or in the mountains with tumbling streams or waterfalls. To increase the supply of negative ions indoo rs, some scientists recommend the use of ionisers: small portable machines, which generate negative ions. They claim that ionisers not only clean and refresh the air but also improve the health of people sensitive to excess positive ions. Of course, there are the detractors, other scientists, who dismiss such claims and are skeptical about negative/positive ion research. Therefore people can only make up their own minds by observing the effects on themselves, or on others, of a negative rich or poor environment. After all it is debatable whether depending on seismic readings to anticipate earthquakes is more effective than watching the cat.1.What effect does exceeding positive ionization have on some people?A.They think they are insane.B.They feel rather bad-tempered and short-fussed.C.They become violently sick.D.They are too tired to do anything.2.In accordance with the passage, static electricity can be caused by___.ing home-made electrical goods.B.wearing clothes made of natural materials.C.walking on artificial floor coverings.D.copying TV programs on a computer.3. A high negative ion count is likely to be found___.A.near a pound with a water pump.B.close to a slow-flowing river.C.high in some barren mountains.D.by a rotating water sprinkler.4.What kind of machine can generate negative ions indoors?A.Ionisers.B.Air-conditioners.C.Exhaust-fansD.Vacuum pumps.5.Some scientists believe that___.A.watching animals to anticipate earthquakes is more effective than depending onseismography.B.the unusual behavior of animals cannot be trusted.C.neither watching nor using seismographs is reliable.D.earthquake第三篇答案BCDAA第四篇(Unit one Passage 4)A study of art history might be a good way to learn more about a culture than is possible to learn in general history classes. Most typical h istory courses concentrate on politics, economics, and war. But art history focuses on much more than this because art reflects not only the political values of a people, but also religious beliefs, emotions, and psychology. In addition, information about the daily activities of our ancestors—or of people very different from our own—can be provided by art. In short, art expresses the essential qualities of a time and a place, and a study of it clearly offer us a deeper understanding than can be found in most history books. In history books, objective information about the political life of a country is presented;that is, facts about politics are given, but opinions are not expressed. Art, on the other hand, is subjective: it reflects emotions and opinions. The great Spanish painter Francisco Goya was perhaps the first truly “political” artist. In his well-known painting The Third of May 1808, he criticized the Spanish government for its misuse of power over people. Over a hundred years later, symbolic images were used in Pablo Picasso’s Guernica to express the horror of war. Meanwhile, on another continent, the powerful paintings of Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros—as well as the works of Alfredo Ramos Martines—depicted these Mex ican artists’ deep anger and sadness about social problems. In the same way, art can reflect a culture’s religious beliefs. For hundreds of years in Europe, religious art was almost the only type of art that existed. Churches and other religious buildings were filled with paintings that depicted people and stories from the Bible. Although most people couldn’t read, they could still understand biblical stories in the pictures on church walls. By contrast, one of the main characteristics of art in the Middle East was (and still is) its absence of human and animal images. This reflects the Islamic belief that statues are unholy.1.More can be learned about a culture from a study of art history than general historybecause art history__.A.show us the religious and emotions of a people in addition to political values.B.provide us with information about the daily activities of people in the past.C.give us an insight into the essential qualities of a time and a place.D.all of the above.2. Art is subjective in that__.A. a personal and emotional view of history is presented through it.B. it can easily rouse our anger or sadness about social problems.C. it will find a ready echo in our hearts.D. both B and C.3. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. Unlike Francisco Goya, Pablo and several Mexican artists expressed their political opinions in their paintings.B. History books often reveal the compilers’ political views.C. Religious art remained in Europe for centuries the only type of art because most people regarded the Bible as the Holy Book.D. All the above mentioned.4. The passage is mainly discussing__.A. the difference between general history and art history.B. The making of art history.C. What can we learn from art.D. The influence of artists on art history.5. In may be concluded from this passage that__.A. Islamic artists have had to create architectural decorations with images of flowers or geometric forms.B. History teachers are more objective than general history.C. It is more difficult to study art history than general history.D. People and stories from the Bible were painted on churches and other buildings in order to popularize the Bible. (Unit 2 Passage 1)If the old maxim that the customer is alw ays right still has meaning, then the airlines that ply the world’s busiest air route between London and Paris have a flight on their hands. The Eurostar train service linking the UK and French capitals via the Channel Tunnel is winning customers in increasing numbers. In late May, it carried its one millionth passenger, having run only a limited service between London, Paris and Brussels since November 1994, starting with two trains a day in each direction to Paris and Brussels. By 1997, the company believ es that it will be carrying ten million passengers a year, and continue to grow from there. From July, Eurostar steps its service to nine trains each way between London and Paris, and fivebetween London and Brussels. Each train carries almost 800 passenge rs, 210 of them in first class. The airlines estimate that they will initially lose around 15%-20% of their London-Paris traffic to the railways once Eurostar starts a full service later this year (1995), with 15 trains a day each way. A similar service wi ll start to Brussels. The damage will be limited, however, the airlines believe, with passenger numbers returning to previous levels within two to three years. In the short term, the damage caused by the 1 million people-levels traveling between London and Paris and Brussels on Eurostar trains means that some air services ar e already suffering. Some of the major carriers say that their passenger numbers are down by less than 5% and point to their rivals-Particularly Air France-as having suffered the problems. On the Brussels route, the railway company had less success, and the airlines report anything from around a 5% drop to no visible decline in traffic. The airlines’ optimism on returning traffic levels is based on historical precedent. British Midland, f or example, points to its experience on Heathrow Leeds Bradford service which saw passenger numbers fold by 15% when British Rail electrified and modernized the railway line between London and Yorkshire. Two years later, travel had risen between the two de stinations to the point where the airline was carrying record numbers of passengers.1.British airlines confide in the fact that__.A.they are more powerful than other European airlines.B.their total loss won’t go beyond a drop of 5% passengers.C.their traffic levels will return in 2-3 years.D.traveling by rail can never catch up with traveling by air.2.The author’s attitude towards the drop of passengers may be described as__.A. worried.B. delightedC. puzzled.D. unrivaled.3. In the passage, British Rail (Pa ra 6) is mentioned to__.A. provide a comparison with Eurostar.B. support the airlines’ optimism.C. prove the inevitable drop of air passengers.D. call for electrification and modernization of the railway.4. The railway’s Brussels route is brought fort h to show that__.A. the Eurostar train service is not doing good business.B. the airlines can well compete with the railway.C. the Eurostar train service only caused little damage.D. only some airlines, such as Air France, are suffering.5.The passage is taken from the first of an essay, from which we may well predict that in thefollowing part the author is going to__.A. praise the airlines’ clear-mindedness.B. warn the airlines of high-speed rail services.C. propose a reduction of London/Paris flights.D. advise the airlines to follow British Midland as their model. (Unit 2 Passage 2)W ithout regular supplies of some hormones our capacity to behave would be seriously impaired; without others we would soon die. T iny amounts of some hormones can modify moods and actions, our inclination to eat or drink, our aggressiveness or submissiveness, and our reproductive and parental behavior. And hormones do more than influence adult behavior; early in life they help to determine the development of bodily form and may even determine an individual’s behavioral cap acities. Later in life the changing outputs of some endocrine glands and the body’s changing sensitivity to some hormones are essential aspects of the phenomena of munication within the body and the consequent integration of behavior were considered the exclusive province of the nervous system up to the beginning of the present century. The emergence of endocrinology as a separate discipline can probably be traced to the experiments of Bayliss and Starling on the hormone secretion. This substance is secreted from cells in the intestinal walls when food enters the stomach; it travels through the bloodstream and stimulates the pancreas to liberate pancreatic juice, which aids in digestion. By showing that special cells secret chemical agents that are conveyed by the bloodstream and regulate distant target organs or tissues. Bayliss and starling demonstrated that chemical integration could occur without participation of the nervous system. The term “hormone” was first used with reference to secretion. Starling derived the term from the Greek hormone, meaning “to excite or set in motion. The term “endocrine” was introduced shortly thereafter “Endocrine” is used to refer to glands that secret products into the bloodstream. The term “endocrine” contrasts w ith “exocrine”, which is applied to glands that secret their products though ducts to the site of action. Exampl es of exocrine glands are the tear glands, the sweat glands, and the pancreas, which secrets pancreatic juice through a duct into the intestine. Exocrine glands are also called duct glands, while endocrine glands are called ductless.1.What is the author’s main purpose in the passage?A.To explain the specific functions of various hormones.B.To provide general information about hormones.C.To explain how the term “hormone” evolved.D.To report on experiments in endocrinology.2.The passage supports which of the following conclusions?A. By their tremendous heroism, men such as Shakleton, Scott, and Amundsen caused a new continent to emerge from the shadows, and yet that heroic age, little more than a century old, is already passing. Modern science and inventions are revolutionizing the endurance, future journeys into these icy wastes will probably depend on motor vehicles equipped with caterpillar traction rather than on the dogs that earlier discoverers found so invaluable and hardly comparable. Few realize that this Antarctic continent is almost equal in size to SouthAmerica, and enormous field of work awaits geographers and prospectors. The coasts of this continent remain to be accurately charted, and the maping of the whole of the interior presents a formidable task to the cartographers who undertake the work. Once their labors are completed, it will be possible to prospect the vast natural resources which scientists believe will furnish one of the largest treasure hoards of metals and minerals the world has yet known, and almost inexhaustible sources of copper, coal, uran ium, and many other ores will become available to man. Such discoveries will usher in an era of practical exploitation of the Antarctic wastes. The polar darkness which hides this continent for the six winter months will be defeated by huge batteries of li ght, and make possible the establishing of air-fields for the future inter-continental air services by making these areas as light as day. Present flying routes will be completely changed, for the Antarctic refueling bases will make flights from Australia to South America comparatively easy over the 5,000 miles journey. The climate is not likely to offer an insuperable problem, for the explorer Admiral Byrd has shown that the climate is possible even for men completely untrained for expeditions into those frozen wastes. Some of his parties were men who had never seen snow before, and yet he records that they survived the rigors of the Antarctic climate comfortably, so that, provided that the appropriate installations are made, we may assume that human beings from all countries could live there safely. Byrd even affirms that it is probably the most healthy climate in the world, for the intense cold of thousands of years has sterilize this continent, and rendered it absolutely germfree, with the consequences that ordinary and extraordinary sickness and diseases from which man suffers in other zones with different climates are here utterly unknown. There exist no problems of conservation and preservation of food supplies, for the latter keep indefinitely without any signs of deterioration;it may even be that later generations will come to regard the Antarctic as the natural storehouse for the whole world. 英语文章总结第1篇Though there is much to be concerned about, there is far, far more for which to be thankful. Though life’s goodness can at times be overshadowed, it is never outweighed.尽管人生有许多烦扰,但更多的是感恩。
尽管生命的美好有时会被遮蔽,但从来都不会被超越。
For every single act that is senselessly destructive, there are thousands more small, quiet acts of love, kindness and compassion. For every person who seeks to hurt, there are many, many more who devote their lives to helping and to healing.
There is goodness to life that cannot be denied.
In the most magnificent vistas and in the smallest details, look closely, for that goodness always comes shining through.
There si no limit to the goodness of life. It grows more abundant with each new encounter. The more you experience and appreciate the goodness of life, the more there is to belived.

In fact, genetically modified foods are already very much a part of our lives. A third of the corn and more than half the soybeans and cotton grown in the US last year were the product of biotechnology, according to the Department of Agriculture. More than 65 million acres of genetically modified crops will be planted in the US this year. The genetic is out of the bottle.
The UN estimates that nearly 800 million people around the world are undernourished. The effects are devastating. About 400 million women of childbearing age are iron deficient, which means their babies are exposed to various birth defects. As many as 100 million children suffer from vitamin A deficiency, a leading cause of blindness. Tens of millions of people suffer from other major ailments and nutritional deficiencies caused by lack of food.
How can biotech help? Biotechnologists have developed genetically modified rice that is fortified with beta-carotene -- which the body converts into vitamin A -- and additional iron, and they are working on other kinds of nutritionally improved crops. Biotech can also improve farming productivity in places where food shortages are caused by crop damage attribution to pests, drought, poor soil and crop viruses, bacteria or fungi.
Yet there are clearly some very real issues that need to be resolved. Like any new product entering the food chain, genetically modified foods must be subjected to rigorous testing. In wealthy countries, the debate about biotech is tempered by the fact that we have a rich array of foods to choose from -- and a supply that far exceeds our needs. In developing countries desperate to feed fast-growing and underfed populations; the issue is simpler and much more urgent: Do the benefits of biotech outweigh the risks?
The statistics on population growth and hunger are disturbing. Last year the world's population reached 6 billion. And by 2050, the UN estimates, it will probably near 9 billion. Almost all that growth will occur in developing countries. At the same time, the world's available cultivable land per person is declining. Arable land has declined steadily since 1960 and will decease by half over the next 50 years, according to the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA).
Damage caused by pests is incredible. The European corn borer, for example, destroys 40 million tons of the world's corn crop annually, about 7% of the total. Incorporating pest-resistant genes into seeds can help restore the balance. In trials of pest-resistant cotton in Africa, yields have increased significantly. So far, fears that genetically modified, pest-resistant crops might kill good insects as well as bad appear unfounded.

Genetically modified foods -- Feed the World?
If you want to spark a heated debate at a dinner party, bring up the topic of genetically modified foods. For many people, the concept of genetically altered, high-tech crop production raises all kinds of environmental, health, safety and ethical questions. Particularly in countries with long agrarian traditions -- and vocal green lobbies -- the idea seems against nature.
Many scientists believe biotech could raise overall crop productivity in developing countries as much as 25% and help prevent the loss of those crops after they are harvested.
