2. Musical ElephantsIn the town of Lampang innorthern Thailand, there is anunusual1 group of musicians. They play many different kinds ofmusic—everything from traditionalThai songs to music by Beethoven. Both children and adults love thisgroup. What makes them sopopular? Is it their music? Theirlooks?2 Yes, it’s both of thesethings, but it’s also something else:they're elephants. These musical elephants started atthe Thai Elephant Conservation Center (TECC) in Lampang. The TECC protects elephants. It teaches people to understand and care for these huge, but gentle, animals. And, like many zoos around the world, the TECC encourages elephants to paint.Richard Lair works with the TECC. He knows a lot about elephants. He says some of the animals’ paintings are very good. But, in fact, elephants hear better than they see. And so he had an idea: if elephants are intelligent and they have good hearing, maybe they can play music. To test his idea, Lair and a friend started the Thai Elephant Orchestra.3 During a performance, the elephants play a variety of instruments, including the drums and the xylophone. The animals alsouse their voices and trunks to make sounds. But can elephants really make music properly? Yes, says Lair. They’re very creative. Humans encourage the animals toplay, but the elephants make their own songs; they don’t just copy their trainers or other people. There are now CDs of the group’s music, which earn money for the TECC. And the music these artists create is pretty amazing.。

Nothing good generally comes of a conversation that start with the words, "I think you should probably sit down before I tell you this.”And so it came to pass. Away for Christmas, we got a call from kind friends at home, our neighbour's house had caught fire while they were out. The fire didn't spread to our house but the smoke very much did. It's weeks of either throwing out, or sending away for specialist cleaning, every single thing into which smoke could have permeated(渗透)because the particles(微粒) are an ongoing health risk and washing isn't enough. Anything soft—sofas and carpets and children's teddy bears, clothes—is suspected. We will be seeing in the New Year in a decidedly minimalist fashion. What I didn't expect to feel, however, is this lucky. Friends and neighbours have come together with incredible generosity. We will never again underestimate the closeness of the village community in which we live, or the innate kindness that is most people's natural reaction to trouble, and are grateful to be reminded of so much that is good. But that's not the only thing I've learned. For in a sense, we have a chance to start again. The surprise on being forced to think about what might urgently need replacing is how short the list of essentials seems; how much we must have been hanging on to out of habit, and how much we have been conditioned to think was important. It's all too easily assumed that family history lives in tangible(有形的)things— old photographs, a dress bought decades ago for a night heavy with memories — but that's not quite right. These things were only reminders of what we already carry with us in head and heart.Walking through the house, sweeping up the broken glass, I realised that the answer to the old question of "What would you save in a fire? " is actually that nothing really matters but each other.(1)What happened to the author's house?A.It caught a fire.B.It was affected by a fire.C.It was broken into by friends.D.Its windows were broken.(2)What does the underlined word "suspected" in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.something that may be damaged.B.something that may not be genuine.C.something that may not be so good.D.something that may be dangerous.(3)What did the author expect to feel?A.People around him were cold to others' trouble.B.His friends and neighbours were so generous.C.People in his community were close to each other.D.He was so lucky to find much that was good.(4)How will the author probably feel when the New Year finally comes?A.Worried.B.Surprised.C.Excited.D.Contented.【答案】(1)B(2)A(3)A(4)D【解析】【分析】本文是一篇记叙文,作者家房子受到火灾影响,物品受损,一切都需要清理,但朋友们和邻居们提供的帮助,让作者感受到了他们的善良,对他们感恩。

Over the next ten years he engaged (使……忙碌) himself in genres as different as fantasy (魔幻) action in The Twins Effect II (2004), horror (恐怖片) in The Eye 10 (2005) and coming-of-age drama in Buddha Mountain (2010).Nothing made much of an impact until he successfully played a thoughtful and dedicated (忠心的) partner in a relationship of undeclared love (暗恋) with his best friend (played by Best Actress winner Ariel Lin). The TV drama was the biggest winner at the awards ceremony (仪式), sweeping seven awards out of its eight nominations (提名).Like his winning role, Li Daren, critics say Chen is just like a fine wine that will get better with age. As a pedestrian(行人), what do you do? The rule says “stopand wait,” but we often see groups ofpeople running red lights.Internet users have jokingly named thisphenomenon “the Chinese-style streetcrossing ”. While many people criticize it asbad manners, recent research reveals (揭示)another possible reason – the duration (持续时间) of red lights in China exceeds (超过)what people can mentally bear. “Pedestrians have a maximum (最大) bearable (可忍受的) waiting time in their mind,” Ni Ying, a member of a research team at Tongji University ’s School of A group of pedestrians jaywalk across a road in Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi province. CHINA DAILYTransportation Engineering, was quoted (引述) by Xinhua News Agency as saying. “If they wait longer than that, they will be more likely to ignore the light.”From 2008 to 2010, Ni’s team carried out research on pedestrians’ waiting times at various road crossings. They found a correlation (相互关系) between running red lights and the length of time they had to wait before the light changed. They concluded that, on average, Chinese can wait for the traffic lights no longer than 70 seconds, and in downtown areas this number could extend (扩大) to 90 seconds. Many countries work out pedestrians’ maximum bearable waiting time and use it to design traffic lights, according to Ni. For example, researchers found that it is 60 seconds for Germans and 45 seconds for Britons. Seldom does a red light in these countries exceed the limits. But the duration of red lights in China often exceeds the 70 or 90 second limit. Take Beijing for example. At Zhongguancun Avenue a red light lasts longer than 2 minutes, during which you could finish reading a short story on Teens. Pedestrians are then given just 30 seconds to cross the street.“I stop for red lights. But if I’m really in a hurry or the traffic interval (区间) is long enough for me to cross, I move slowly forward (向前) seconds before the light turns green,” said Qi Xin, 17, living in Fengtai district in Beijing. However, the long waiting time cannot serve as an excuse for breaking the rules, commentator Li Zhiyong wrote on the People’s Daily.“As long as the design of traffic lights remains the same, everyone should obey the rules, otherwise (否则) the country will be out of order and danger will be incurred for pedestrians,” wrote Li.Roman Holiday without the snacksIN the movie Roman Holiday, AudreyHepburn shows the world what a romantic(浪漫的) scene is all about: wanderingaround Rome with a lover by your side andan ice cream in hand. Victor was a bright and eager young student who had just started his high school journey at the renowned Victor's New High School. As he walked through the doors on his first day, he felt a mix of excitement and nervousness, ready to embark on a new chapter of his academic life. One of the core subjects that Victor was particularly looking forward to was English reading. He had always had a passion for literature and was eager to delve deeper into the world of classic and contemporary works. On the first day of his English class, Victor's teacher, Ms. Anderson, introduced the curriculum for the year, which included a diverse selection of novels, short stories, and poetry. The first book on the reading list was "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. Victor had heard about this iconic novel before and was thrilled to have the opportunity to read it. As he delved into the story, he was captivated by the powerful themes of social justice, racial inequality, and the importance of empathy and understanding. The characters of Scout, Jem, and Atticus Finch came alive on the pages, and Victor found himself immersed in the world of 1930s Alabama. He was particularly struck by Atticus's unwavering moral principles and his determination to fight for what was right, even in the face of adversity.Throughout the reading and class discussions, Victor gained a deeper appreciation for the nuances of the English language and the ways in which literature can be used to explore complex social and ethical issues. He found himself engaging in lively debates with his classmates, sharing his own insights and perspectives on the themes and characters. As the semester progressed, Victor's enthusiasm for English reading only grew stronger. The next book on the curriculum was "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini, a poignant story of friendship, betrayal, and redemption set against the backdrop of Afghanistan's turbulent history.Victor was captivated by the complex relationships between the characters and the way the author wove together themes of guilt, forgiveness, and the power of human connection. He found himself drawn to the vivid descriptions of the Afghan landscape and the cultural traditions that were so integral to the story. In addition to the novels, Victor's English class also explored a variety of short stories and poetry. He was particularly intrigued by the works of Ernest Hemingway, whose sparse yet powerful prose resonated with him. Victor found himself analyzing the deeper meanings and symbolism behind Hemingway's writing, gaining a newfound appreciation for the art of literary analysis. One of the most challenging yet rewarding aspects of Victor's English reading experience was the in-class essays and presentations. Ms. Anderson encouraged her students to delve deeply into the texts, to analyze the themes and character development, and to articulate their thoughts and ideas in a clear and compelling manner. At first, Victor found the writing assignments daunting, but with the guidance and support of his teacher and classmates, he gradually gained confidence in his ability to express his ideas effectively. He learned the importance of careful reading, critical thinking, and the ability to craft a well-structured and persuasive argument. As the year progressed, Victor's love for English reading only deepened. He found himself seeking out additional works on his own, exploring new authors and genres that piqued his interest. He began to see the world through a different lens, with a greater appreciation for the power of language and the way it can shape our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.By the end of the school year, Victor had not only gained a wealth of knowledge and understanding about classic and contemporary literature but had also developed a deeper sense of empathy, critical thinking, and communication skills. He knew that the lessons he had learned in his English reading class would serve him well not only in his academic pursuits but also in his future endeavors. As Victor looked back on his first year of high school, he felt a sense of pride and accomplishment. He had risen to the challenges of the English reading curriculum and had emerged as a more well-rounded, thoughtful, and engaged student. He was eager to continue his literary journey, knowing that the lessons he had learned would continue to shape and enrich his life for years to come.。

The severity of symptoms can vary dramatically, from a mild sniffle to a hellish feeling of suffocation. Here are some of the coronavirus patients' stories:Jaimuay Sae-ung, 73Jaimuay Sae-ung was the first Thai national to contract coronavirus, becoming ill in December. She experienced a fever and a bad cough, then developed pneumonia (肺炎) while in quarantine. After 10 days, Jaimuay’s condition had improved and she was eventually discharged following two negative test results.Carl Goldman, 67Carl Goldman, from Santa Clarita in California, was on the Diamond Princess cruise ship and later tested positive for coronavirus. He said the virus “hasn't been that bad”. He developed a fever and “a bit of a cough” during his flight back to America and was quarantined on his return. He said: “The sickest I've ever been was when I had bronchitis (支气管炎) several years ago. This has been much easier — no chills, no body aches. I breathe easily and I don't have a stuffy nose. “My chest feels tight and I have coughing spells. If I had been at home with similar symptoms, I probably would have gone to work as usual.” After having the illness for one month, Carl now has no symptoms, but is still testing positive.Marc Thibault, 48Teacher Marc, from Rhode Island, in the US, led a school field trip to Italy, France and Spain last month and was admitted to hospital on February 27, five days after he returned home. A week later he was diagnosed with coronavirus. He said the illness had hit him “like a hurricane”. But you’re not going to use them all at once, so the best way to keep them fresh is to store them in the fridge, right? Not so fast. When it comes to potatoes, sticking them in the refrigerator could increase your risk of cancer. Why? Here’s the chemistry behind it:The colder temperature of a refrigerator can convert②the starch (淀粉) in potatoes into sugar. Then, when you bake or fry the potatoes at temperatures above 250ºF, those sugars combine with the amino acid asparagine (天冬酰胺氨基酸) and produce a chemical called acrylamide (丙烯酰胺), according to the American Cancer Society.Acrylamide is a chemical that’s used to make paper, dyes, and plastics, as well as to treat drinking water and sewage③. The main way people are exposed to acrylamide is through smoking, but it’s also found in foods such as French fries and potato chips, crackers, bread, cookies, cereals, and coffee. So how dangerous is acrylamide? Research in mice has shown that the chemical increasedthe subjects’ risk of cancer. Studies in humans haven’t demonstrated consistent④evidence that exposure to acrylamide through diet raises the risk, but there have been mixed results about kidney, endometrial, and ovarian cancer.Though mice and humans metabolize⑤acrylamide at different rates, the National Toxicology Program classifies the chemical as a carcinogen (致癌物) based on studies of lab animals that ingested⑥acrylamide in drinking water. The good news? Studies have shown that not refrigerating potatoes and decreasing cooking time to avoid browning can reduce acrylamide content. So play it safe and go with the American Cancer Society’s recommendation⑦for your spuds⑧: Keep them out of the fridge, store them in a cool, dry place, such as a cabinet⑨or pantry⑩, and just cook them lightly.but don’t think your pantry is your be-all and end-all when it comes to food storage.CIrina Kolesnikova has a wealth of credits on her dance card, but the prima ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员) has made her career from one particular role of a lifetime. That would be the famous yin and yang characters of Odette and Odile in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, which has become her personal trademark since the age of 21. Her performance as the Swan Queen is regarded as a standout for a ballet that has been redone countless times on the stage and silver screen for nearly 150 years. After her debut at the London Coliseum, The Telegraph described Kolesnikova’s performance of Odette as “truly a thing of remarkable beauty.” Kolesnikova just made her U.S. debut and took the time to speak with Fortune.Fortune: What inspired you to go into ballet?Kolesnikova: When I was 5, I saw a ballet, The Sleeping Beauty, on TV, and I was so impressed by what I’d seen. That’s when I decided to be a ballet dancer.Fortune: Playing the twin roles of Odette and Odile has become a bit of a trademark for you. What attracted you in Swan Lake? Are you looking forward to trying new projects?Kolesnikova: First of all, in my repertoire (全部节目) of classical ballet, there is not only Swan Lake, but also The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, and also my favorite: La Bayadere. In regards to Swan Lake, I really love this ballet as I have a chance to show two opposite characters during one show. In terms of new projects, I would like to dance Anna Karenina, Manon, and Tatiana from Evgeny Onegin.Fortune: What is your long-term plan for your career? How do you prepare for life after dancing professionally?Kolesnikova: At present, I am not thinking about finishing my career. However, last year I graduated from Vaganova Academy with a coaching diploma—even though I already have the experience of coaching and preparing two other ballerinas for the roles of Odette and Odile.1. How did The Telegraph think of Irina Kolesnikova’s performance?A. Too terrible.B. Very fantastic.C. Unsatisfactory.D. Not mentioned.2. What made Irina Kolesnikova decide to be a ballerina?A. The charm of a ballet.B. The love for Swan Lake.C. The influence of her parents.D. The admiration to ballerinas.3. What can we learn about Irina Kolesnikova?A. She is inclined to end her career after years.B. She plays a role in Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake.C. She likes Swan Lake best among all ballets.D. She looks forward to playing a role in Evgeny Onegin.4. What is the most likely job for Irina Kolesnikova in the future?A. A ballet coach.B. A ballet director.C. An academy teacher.D. A reporter of Fortune.DMath Scores haven't Budged①in a DecadeAbout 41% of fourth graders and 34% of eighth graders scored proficient②in math in 2019. That's not significantly different from 2017.Carr, a leader of the assessments division for the National Center for Education Statistics, which administers the NAEP to a representative sample of students across the country every two years, said the math scores are also about the same as a decade ago.But since 1990, students at both grade levels have improved in math: Fourth graders this year scored 27 points higher on the 300-point exam compared with their peers in 1990. Eighth grade students posted an average score that was 19 points higher than in 1990.What else has happened to math and reading scores in the past decade? The gap between the most- and least-competent students got bigger.“Compared to a decade ago, we see that lower-achieving students made score declines in all of the assessments, while higher-performing students made score gains,” Carr said. This divergence③in performance is one reason why average student achievement hasn't changed in a decade, Carr explained. Is there any good news in the 2019 NAEP reading and math results?Yes. Washington, D.C., students showed big gains in fourth grade reading and eighth grade math. In fact, D.C. Public Schools was the only large district to show test-score gains in three of the four assessments since 2017, Carr said.Mississippi was the only other state to improve in fourth grade reading since 2017.Detroit’s public schools pulled out a big win in fourth grade math: Students scored 6 points higher there than in 2017.Boys, Hispanic students and English language learners also improved in fourth grade math over the past two years.EPressing the power button to turn off your computer can save time—but can it also damage your machine? Raise your hand if losing your computer would be a serious hindrance to your career, or if, at the very least, you’d lose a whole lot of important information. Yeah, us too. And yet we tend not to treat our computers with the care about this advantage; many of us are probably guilty of these things you’re doing that shorten your laptop’s life. One of the directives you’ll commonly hear when it comes to computer upkeep (保养) is that you should shut down your computer properly by clicking the “Shut Down” button onscreen, rather than pressing and holding the “Power” button, so that it shuts down immediately. But when you click “Shut Down,” every program needs to close, and that can be time-consuming. How bad, really, is shutting your computer down with the power button?“Shutting down a system properly is known as a ‘graceful shutdown’, which sends a signal to the respective operating system so that it can save its state before turning the hardware off,” a tech expert Damien Mason says. However, Mason adds that this forced shutdown can even be beneficial, in certain situations. “Hard shutdowns can be a saving grace when a system crashes oras a safety way to prevent hackers,” he says. But you still shouldn’t make a habit of doing it. Mason says that graceful shutdowns are still a preferred method, which avoids interrupting tasks conducted by the operating system and allows programs to properly save. You should press the “Power” button carefully, but it’s not a death knell for your machine. There are plenty of other things you may be doing that are most likely worse. For instance, not shutting down your computer at all—or even only doing it rarely—can be far more damaging to it than a forced shutdown.1.What can we learn from the first paragraph?puters do not need protection.puters have only one advantage.puters can be used for a long time.puters play an important role in work.2.How would you choose to turn off your computer according to Paragraph 2?A.No need to shut down.B.Press and hold the “Power”.C.Pull out the power line wires.D.Click the “Shut Down” onscreen.3.Which of the following is mentioned in the text?A.The situations of no pressing and holding the “Power”.B.The query about choosing the “Shut Down” onscreen.C.The advantages of clicking the “Shut Down” onscreen.D.The advice on developing a habit of pressing the “Power”.4.What does the last paragraph imply?A.Bad behaviors may damage the computer.puter upkeep is actually very difficult.C.Forced shutdown will destroy the computer.D.Think carefully before turning off the computer.A【答案】1-4 CDBD【解析】本文是说明文,主要为新冠肺炎病人对自己病症的描述。

A daughter thought life was unpromising to her and complained to her father about it. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as if one problem was just solved before a new one arose. Her father, a cook, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to a boil. In one he placed carrots, in the second he placed eggs, and the last he placed ground coffee beans. He let them sit and boil, without saying a word. The daughter sucked her teeth and impatiently waited, asking repeatedly what he was doing. In about twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then he spooned the coffee out and placed it in another. Turning to her he asked, “Darling, what do you see?”“Carrots, eggs, and coffee,” she replied. He brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg! Finally, he asked her to taste the coffee. She smiled as she tasted its rich flavor. She humbly asked, “What does it mean, Father?”He explained that each of them had faced the same adversity, boiling water, but each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong and hard. But after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been easily broken. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior. But after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.“Which are you?” he asked his daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?”Reflection:___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________The Scar of Love Name ________ No.___ Some years ago on a hot summer day in south Florida a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. In a hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran out the back door, leaving behind shoes, socks, and shirt as he went.He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator was swimming toward the shore. His mother in the house was looking out the window and saw the two as they got closer and closer together. In utter fear, she ran toward the water, yelling to her son as loudly as she could. Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her, the alligator reached him. From the dock, the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched his legs. That began an incredible tug-of-war between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the mother was much too passionate to let go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard the screams, raced from his truck, took aim and shot the alligator.Remarkably, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were extremely scarred by the vicious attack of the animal. And, on his arms, were deep scratches where his mother's fingernails dug into his flesh in her effort to hang on to the son she loved. The newspaper reporter, who interviewed the boy after the trauma, asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted his pant legs. And then, with obvious pride, he said to the reporter, "But look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my Mom wouldn't let go."You and I can identify with that little boy. We have scars, too. Not from an alligator, but the scars of a painful past. Some of those scars are unsightly and have caused us deep regret. But, some wounds, my friend, are because God has refused to let go. In the midst of your struggle, he's been there holding on to you.The Scripture teaches that God loves you. You are a child of God. He wants to protect you and provide for you in every way. But sometimes we foolishly wade into dangerous situations, not knowing what lies ahead. The swimming hole of life is filled with peril - and we forget that the enemy is waiting to attack. That's when the tug-of-war begins - and if you have the scars of His love on your arms, be very, very grateful. He did not and will not ever let you go.Never judge another person's scars, because you don't know how they were made.Reflection:__________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________Old clothes become new gifts Name ________ No.___ Many of my friends meet on Wednesday in the early morning to go to a specific parking lot sale held at a thrift store. We love it because we can put whatever fits into the grocery bag for just $1.As we finished one day, paid our dollars, and stayed to talk a bit, we noticed the clothing that remained was being scooped up and being thrown into their dumpster. We asked why, and they said they had no room for the extra clothes and it would pile up very quickly. I asked them why they have not contacted other places like churches, shelters for women and children. They said they did several times in the past and they only came two or three times and stopped as they had to be there at a specific time in the morning which was right after the parking lot sale. After coming a few times, most of these organizations quit.Well, we said that we were here all the time and could take whatever was left. They agreed! So we loaded our two cars up to the brim and hauled it to our city. We have done this every Wed now for two years! We opened up a clothing closet called Gifts Of Grace when a storage facility donated two units to us. We were holding yard sales and flea markets until then for anyone who needed clothing. Now we have a real building and advertise free clothing for anyone who has the need. We have served hundreds of families in the tight economy so far with the clothing they were just going to throw away. Now our community is better because of it and our lives are blessed. Their lives are made a bit easier to have this opportunity to find nice clothing for not one single penny. We volunteer and run it about two or three days a week. One person's trash is always another person's treasure!Reflection:__________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________87 Year Old Woman Named RoseThe first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned round to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, "Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?" I laughed and enthusiastically responded, "Of course you may!" and she gave me a giant squeeze. "Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?" I asked. She jokingly replied, "I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids..." "No seriously," I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. "I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!" she told me.After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this "time machine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor.Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, "I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know."As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets."She concluded her speech by courageously singing "The Rose." She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the year's end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.Remember, growing older is mandatory, growing up is optional.Reflection:__________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________A Good Lesson Name ________ No.___A young man, a student in one of our universities, was one day taking a walk with a professor, who was commonly called the students' friend, for his kindness to those who waited on his instructions. As they went along, they saw lying in the path a pair of old shoes, which they supposed to belong to a poor man who was employed in a field close by, and who had nearly finished his day's work. The student turned to the professor, saying: "Let us play the man a trick: we will hide his shoes, and we stay behind those bushes, and wait to see his puzzlement when he cannot find them.""My young friend," answered the professor, "we should never amuse ourselves at the expense of the poor. But you are rich, and may give yourself a much greater pleasure by means of the poor man. Put a coin into each shoe, and then we will hide ourselves and watch how the discovery affects him."The student did so, and they both placed themselves behind the bushes close by. The poor man soon finished his work, and came across the field to the path where he had left his coat and shoes. While putting on his coat he slipped his foot into one of his shoes; but feeling something hard, he bent down to feel what it was, and found the coin. Astonishment and wonder were seen upon his face. He gazed upon the coin, turned it round, and looked at it again and again. He then looked around him on all sides, but no person was to be seen. He now put the money into his pocket, and went on to put on the other shoe; but his surprise was doubled on finding the other coin. His feelings overcame him; he fell upon his knees, looked up to heaven and let out a sincere thanksgiving, in which he spoke of his wife, sick and helpless, and his children without bread, whom the timely giving, from some unknown hand, would save from drying. The student stood there deeply affected, and his eyes filled with tears. "Now," said the professor, "are you not much better pleased than if you had played your intended trick?"The youth replied, "You have taught me a lesson which I will never forget. I feel now the truth of those words, which I never understood before: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"Reflection:__________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________That Little Girl Name ________ No.___ Have you ever not wanted to do something so badly that you would rather die than go? Well that’s how I felt about joining Madcaps and volunteering at Saint Vincent De Paul Homeless shelter. But now I believe that you should have an open mind to things because in the end you might just end up enjoying it.“It’s a waste of time”, I said when my mom told I had to join Madcaps, a mothers and daughters club assisting philanthropies, and then when she told me I had to volunteer at a homeless shelter I thought this just could not get worse. We got there late, of course, and walked to the dirty homeless shelter, where we saw a lady yelling at the security guard. He dealt with her and then lead us to the kitchen where we ran into my five fellow Madcaps class of 2017 mothers and daughters. Since I’m usually so socially awkward I had met only one person at the pool party, earlier this year. I looked around for her but she was not there. Damn, I was alone! When the head of the kitchen came out and asked for 3 mothers to work outside the kitchen to clean up the plates and silverware, my mom just so happened to volunteer, leaving me to serve food with people I had never met before.Soon the homeless families started to walk in and a little girl, around 5 years old, walked up and pointed to the food I was handing out. I handed her the cold sandwich, wrapped in the sticky plastic, she nodded in a form of saying thanks, and then walked to join her family at the large table. As she walked away I thought of how much I had. I get to go to one of the top schools in San Diego, I have a great house by the water, and I have a warm meal every night. Then I thought of how little she had. She probably didn’t go to school, and this is where she sleeps and eats every day. It took that lit tle girl to make me realize just how lucky I am.After that moment I had a change of heart. Now, I love Madcaps and don’t miss one meeting, I have gotten over being socially awkward and now have many friends, who I hang out with on a regular basis. And this year I am sure I will do more than the required 20 hours of philanthropies.I believe that if you have an open mind about things you can learn a lot about yourself and the people in your community, you can make new friends and realize just how lucky you are. I believe that if you have an open mind to things you can accomplish more and become a better rounded person. I believe you can make a difference just by doing one thing you don’t want to do.Reflection:__________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________。
