The importance of punctuality is taught to young children in school. Tardy slips and the use of bells signal to the child that punctuality and time itself are to be respected. People who keep appointments areconsidered dependable. If people are late to job interviews, appointments, or classes, they are often viewed as unreliable and irresponsible. In the business world, "time is money" and companies may fine their executives for tardiness to business meetings. Of course, it is not always possible to be punctual. Social and business etiquette also provides rules for late arrivals. Calling on the telephone if one is going to be more than a few minutes late for scheduled appointments is considered polite and is often expected. But unlike humans, plants can have their temperature taken from 3,000 feet away—straight up. A decade ago, adapting the infrared scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide (杀虫剂) spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that don"t have pest (害虫) problems. Even better, Paley"s Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3,000 feet at night, an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were。

Paintings by Ruby, an Asian elephant who lived at the Phoenix Zoo in Arizona, sold for up to $5,000 in the late 1980s, said Dick George, a consultant with the zoo. "Ruby was about seven months old when she first came to the zoo", said George. "She lived with a goat and some chickens, but she didn"t have an elephant companion for a number ofyears. She spent a lot of time drawing in the dirt with a stick to make her days more stimulating. Her keeper bought her some art supplies". George said, ", Ruby was excited about painting right from the beginning". The elephants at the art academies in the Southeast Asia are taught to hold a paintbrush with the tip of their trunks. Initially, the keeper guides the elephant"s trunk over the canvas(画布) and offers rewards for good performance. A competitive personality is seen as important to success, especially in men. The development of social and political skills is also considered to be very important. To help Americans develop these other important skills, schools have added a large number of extracurricular(课程外)activities to daily life at school. This is especially tree of high schools and colleges and extends down into elementary schools as well. Athletics, frequently called "competitive sports", are perhaps the most important of these activities. Football, basketball, and baseball teams are seen as very important in teaching students, particularly boys, the "winning spirit". At times, athletic teams seem to become more important to some students and their parents than the academic programs offered by the schools.第16题Americans believe that education is ______.A.the only way to successB.the main purpose of the schoolsC.just like climbing laddersD.important to success第17题Which of the following is NOT mentioned as important to success?A.intellectual achievementpetitive personalityC.social backgroundsD.social and political skills第18题A variety of extracurricular activities are added in American schools ______.A.to help students climb the education ladderB.to enrich students" dull life at schoolC.to help students become more successful in later lifeD.to extend college education down into elementary schools第19题Athletic activities are designed ______.A.to make boys strongerB.to teach students winning spiritC.to develop students" social and political skillsD.to improve the academic programs第20题Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?cation and SuccessB.Extracurricular Activities at SchoolC.Athletic SportsD.Intellectual Achievement上一题下一题(21~25/共20题)阅读理解People once widely believed that intelligent life existed on Mars. The 19th-century discovery of what appeared to be geometric designs cut across the surface was taken as evidence. The lines were thought to have been a system of canals that had been built to irrigate the surface. It is now clear that "canals"—perhaps the most spectacular geologic features of Mars—are natural valleys where ancient rivers once flowed. Another fragmented idea concerns the planet"s seasonal changes in color. Once attributed to the rapid spread of some life-form, these shifts are nowknown to develop from the movement of fine dust in the atmosphere. By the close of the 20th century none of the many experiments conducted by spacecraft had ever found persuasive evidence of life. Nevertheless, speculation continued over the existence of some form of life, in either the present or the past. In 1996 scientists discovered organic compounds and minerals in a meteorite(陨石), consisting of Martian rock, that collided with Earth around 11,000 B.C. These compounds suggest that Mars may have been inhabited by organisms more than three billion years ago.第21题Why did people in the 19th century believe the existence of intelligent life on Mars?A.Because the surface of Mars seemed to be geometric.B.Because the lines were drawn across the surface of the planet.C.Because a system of canals was thought to be there.D.Because it was the Martians that built the canals.第22题The "canals" on Mars have proved to be ______ according to the passage.A.the minor geologic characteristic of MarsB.natural valleys on the surface of MarsC.rivers that have kept flowing since ancient timesD.a system that irrigates the whole surface第23题What were the Mars" seasonal changes in color believed to be?A.The natural changes on the planet.B.The seasonal cycles.C.The movement of some life form.D.The storm of dust in its atmosphere.第24题How is the 1996 discovery related to the possible existence of organisms on Mars?A.The meteorite containing organic compounds is part of Mars.B.A Martian rock struck Earth about 11,000 years ago.C.The organisms came back to life after the collision with Earth.D.The inhabiting organisms appeared more than three billion years ago.第25题How many arguments in this passage lead to the belief of the existence of life on Mars?A.Two.B.Three.C.Four.D.Five.上一题下一题(26~30/共20题)阅读理解Weather Forecast The following forecast shows for the listed cities the projected weather conditions and the expected range of temperatures from the afternoon high to the evening low. 图片第26题According to the forecast, ______.A.Kansas City will be warmer than TorontoB.temperatures will be the lowest in Seattle and MinneapolisC.the weather will be fine in most of the listed citiesD.more than half of the listed cities ore cloudy or rain likely第27题Among the following four cities, the difference between the afternoon high and the evening low is smallest in ______.A.Kansas CityB.MiamiC.AtlantaD.Seattle第28题Which of the following cities is closest m Miami in weather conditions?A.BostonB.AtlantaC.WashingtonD.Houston第29题The difference between the afternoon high and the evening low is greatest in ______.A.SeattleB.Los Angeless VegasD.Phoenix第30题The differences between the afternoon high and the evening low are the same in ______.A.Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, and St. LouisB.Atlanta, San Francisco, New Orleans, and SeattleC.Cleveland, Dallas, St. Louis, and Washington,D.C.D.Pittsburg, Miami, Houston, and Boston上一题下一题(31~40/共10题)完型填空How much sleep does a person need?【B1】the physiological bases of the need for sleep remain conjectural(猜想), rendering conclusive answers to this question impossible, much evidence has been gathered on how much sleep people do in fact obtain. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set updangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself. Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are severe over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child"s own happiness. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality(道德). Also, parents should realize that "example is better than precept". If they are not sincere and do not practise what they preach(说教), their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled. A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents" principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.第11题Eagerly watching the child"s acquisition of new skills______.A.should be avoidedB.is universal among parentsC.sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD.will make him lose interest in learning new things第12题In the process of children"s learning new skills parents______.A.should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they readB.should not expect too much of themC.should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their ownD.should create as many learning opportunities as possible第13题The second paragraph mainly tells us that______.A.parents should be strict with their childrenB.parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the communityC.parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children aloneD.parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation第14题The word "precept"(Para. 3) probably means"______"A.ideaB.punishmentC.behaviourD.instruction第15题In moral matters, parents should______.A.observe the rules themselvesB.be aware of the marked difference between adults and childrenC.forbid things which have no foundation in moralityD.consistently ensure the security of their children上一题下一题(16~20/共20题)阅读理解图片第16题The service in the first advertisement is directed to the following EXCEPT ______.A.contract organizationsB.real estate companiesC.individual personsD.special construction companies第17题The services provided in the first advertisement do not include ______.A.demolishing housesB.cleaning up construction sitesC.transporting machinesD.headache curing第18题Golden Touch Construction is ______.A.a private companyB.a national agencyC.an international cooperationD.charge-free organization第19题Services provided by Golden Touch Construction include ______.A.kitchen decorationB.bathroom buildingC.bar demolitionD.house purchase第20题Both ads promised to provide ______.A.insuranceB.cheap priceC.free estimatesD.free designing上一题下一题(21~25/共20题)阅读理解Concern with money, and then more money, in order to buy the conveniences and luxuries of modern life, has brought great changes to the lives of most Frenchmen. More people are working than ever before in France. In the cities the traditional leisurely midday meal is disappearing. Offices, shops and factories are discovering the greater efficiency of a short lunch hour in company lunchrooms. In almost all lines of work emphasis now falls on ever-increasing output. Thus the "typical" Frenchman produces more, earns more, and buys more consumer goods than his counterpart of only a generation ago. He gains in creature comforts and ease of life. What he loses to some extent is his sense of personal uniqueness, or individuality. Some say that France has been Americanized. This is because the United States is a world symbol of thetechnological society and its consumer products. The so-called Americanization of France has its critics. They fear that "assembly-line life" will lead to the disappearance of the pleasures of the more graceful and leisurely old French style. What will happen, they ask, to taste, elegance, and the cultivation of the good things in life-to joy in the smell of a freshly picked apple, a stroll by the river, or just happy hours of conversation in a local cafe? Since the late 1940"s life in France has indeed taken on qualities of rush, tension, and the pursuit of material gain. Some of the strongest critics of the new way of life are the young, especially university students. They are concerned with the future, and they fear that France is threatened by the triumph of the competitive, goods-oriented culture. Occasionally, they have reacted against the trend with considerable violence. In spite of the critics, however, countless Frenchmen are committed to keeping France in the forefront of the modem economic world. They find that the present life brings more rewards, conveniences, and pleasures than that of the past. They believe that a modern, industrial France is preferable to the old.第21题Which of the following is not given as a feature of the old French way of life?A.Leisure.B.Elegance.C.Efficiency.D.Tast第22题Which of the following is not related to the new French way of life?A.Shorter lunch hour.B.Greater output.C.Creature comfort.D.Leisurely cafe talk.第23题Nowadays few Frenchmen ______.A.prefer the modern life styleB.actually enjoy working at the assembly lineC.are more concerned with money than in the pastD.are more competitive than the old generation第24题The passage suggests that ______.A.in pursuing material gains the Frenchmen are suffering losses elsewhereB.it"s now unlikely to see a Frenchman enjoying a stroll by the riverC.the French are fed up with the smell of freshly picked applesD.great changes have occurred in the life style of all Frenchmen第25题Which of the following best states the main idea of the passage?A.Changes in the French way of life.B.Criticism of the new life style.C.The Americanization of France.D.Features of the new way of lif上一题下一题。

The games got their name from Olympia, the Greek city where they took place. Like the summer Olympics of today, the ancient Olympics were held every four years. Thousands of people from all over the Greek world came to watch. The main stadium held about 45,000 people. "We have accounts of visitors and pilgrims setting uptents all around the site", Lisa Cerrato of Tufts University said. During the first Olympics, there was only one competition—a 200-meter race. But over time the games grew to include wrestling, chariot racing, boxing, and other sports. Women were not allowed to compete, but they had their own separate games. "The ancient athlete became celebrities(名人), just like today. They often lived the rest of their lives being treated to free dinners", Cerrato said. "City-states even tried to steal away each other"s athletes by offering them various awards". The ancient Olympics existed until A.D. 393. But the modem Olympics are still going strong.第11题Where did the ancient Greeks hold their first Olympics?A.In Athens.B.In Olympics.C.In a town.D.In a state.第12题How did researchers know that ancient Greeks rushed to watch the Olympics?A.Thousands of people came to watch.B.The main stadium is still not big enough.C.They have found the related record of events.D.Many of them were visitors and pilgrims.第13题What did women do since they were not allowed to participate in the Olympics?A.They stayed at home doing nothing.B.They organized protests in the city.C.They had their own games.D.They set up tents around the site.第14题The ancient athletes must have felt honored when they______.pleted in a 200-meter raceB.wrestled with each otherC.read the accounts of the gamesD.received the treatment of free dinners第15题It can be inferred from the fourth paragraph that______.A.the ancient athletes liked to celebrate their victoriesB.free dinners were offered during the competitionC.city-states competed with each other to win the OlympicsD.awards were often stolen to honor the athletes上一题下一题(16~20/共20题)阅读理解If those "mad moments"—when you can"t remember what your friend has told you or where you left your keys—are becoming more frequent, mental exercises and a healthy brain diet may help. Just as bodies require more maintenance with the passing years, so do brains, which scientists now know show signs of aging as early as the 20s and 30s. "Brain aging starts at a very young age, younger than any of us had imagined and these processes continue gradually over theyears", said Dr. Gary Small, the director of the Center on Aging at the University of California, Los Angeles. "I"m convinced that it is never too early to get started on a mental or brain-fitness program", he added. In his book, The Memory Bible, the 51-year-old neuroscientist(神经学家) lists what he refers to as the 10 suggestions for keeping the brain young. They include training memory, building skills, reducing stress, mental exercises, brain food and a healthy lifestyle. It"s a game plan for keeping brain cells sparking and neural networks in perfect shape. "Misplacing your keys a couple of times don"t mean you should start labeling your cabinets. Memory loss is not an inevitable consequence of aging. Our brains can fight back", he said. Small provides the weapons for a fun-scale attack Simple memory tests give an indication of what you are up against and tools such as "look" and "connect" are designed to make sure that important things such as names and dates are never forgotten. "So if you wanted to learn names and faces, for example, you meet Mrs. Beatty and you notice a distinguishing facial feature, maybe a high eyebrow", said Small. "You associate the first thing that comes to mind. I think of the actor Warren Beatty so I create a mental picture of Warren Beatty kissing her brow". Small admits it may sound a bit strange but he says it works. "Mental exercises could be anything from doing crossword puzzles and writing with your left hand if you are right handed or learning a language. It could be anything that is fun that people enjoy doing", he added. He also recommends physical exercise, a low-fat diet and eating foods rich in fatty acids, such as fish, nuts, and fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants(抗氧化剂) including blueberries and onions in addition to reducing stress.第16题The "mad moments" in the first paragraph refers to the time when we______.A.don"t listen to our friendsB.have lost our important thingsC.have some mental problemsD.have a bad memory第17题In this passage, the author mainly tells us ______.A.everyone has bad memories sometimes no matter how old he isB.we can prevent our mind from aging with various methodsC.brain aging starts at the time when we are in the 20s and 30sD.memory lost is not the sign that we are getting old第18题By giving the example "you meet Mrs. Beatty and you notice a distinguishing.., eyebrow", Dr. Small is trying to explain the memory tool of______.A.lookB.physical exercisesC.connectD.mental exercises第19题By saying "I think of the actor Warren Beatty so I create…, he r brow", Dr. Small is trying to explain the memory tool of______.A.remembering facial featuresB.reducing stressC.connecting related thingsD.observing carefully第20题Mental exercises do NOT include______.A.writing with one"s left handB.learning a foreign languageC.doing crossword puzzlesD.taking pictures上一题下一题(21~25/共20题)阅读理解Astronaut Jim Voss has enjoyed many memorable moments in his career, including three space flights and one space walk. But he recalls with special fondness a decidedly earthbound(只在地球上的) experience in the summer of 1980 when he participated in the NASA-ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program. Voss, then a science teacher at West Point was assigned to the Marshall Space Flight Center"s propulsion(推进) lab in Alabama to analyze why a hydraulic fuel pump seal on the space shuttle was working so well when previous seals had failed. It was a seemingly tiny problem among the vast complexities of running the space program` Yet it was important to NASA because any crack in the seal could have led to destructive results for the astronauts who relied on them. "I worked a bit with NASA engineers, "says Voss, "but I did it mostly by analysis. I used a handheld calculator, not a computer, to do a thermodynamic(热力学的) analysis. "At the end of the summer, he, like the other NASA-ASEE fellows working at Marshall summarized his findings in a formal presentation and detailed paper. It was a valuable moment for Voss because the ASEE program gave him added understanding of NASA, deepened his desire to fly in space, and intensified his application for astronaut status. It was not an easy process. Voss was actually passed over when he first applied for the astronaut program in 1987. Since then he has participated in three space mission. The 50-year-old Army officer, who lives in Houston, is now in training for a four-month mission as a crew member on the International Space Station starting in July 2000. Voss says the ASEE program is wonderful for all involved. "It brings in people from the academic world and gives NASA a special property for a particular period of time. It brings some fresh eyes and fresh ideas to NASA, and establishes a link with colleges and universities", Voss explains". There is an exchange of information and an exchange of perspectives that is very important". For the academic side, Voss says, the ASEE program also "brings institutions of higher learning more insight into new technology. We give them an opportunity to work on real-world problems and take it back to the classroom".第21题Why was the hydraulic fuel pump seal important for the space shuttle?A.Because previous seals all failed.B.Because it was very complex in running the space program.C.Because great care has to be taken of the hydraulic fuel pump sealing.D.Because any crack in the seals would cause disastrous results for astronauts.第22题The great significanee of Voss"s findings lies in______.I. strengthening his determination to join in space flights.Ⅱ. furthering his understanding of NASA.Ⅲ. consolidating his astronaut status in NASA programs。

Something else happened in the 1970's: the price of oil increasedtremendously, driving up the price of almost everything and making Americans aware that their large automobiles used a lot of gasoline. At the same time, foreign car manufacturers had begun to produce small fuel efficient cars in large quantities for the export market. Suddenly, the large, gas guzzling American cars were no longer attractive to American buyers, who began buying foreign cars by the thousands. The American automobile industry went into a recession. Thousands of automotive workers were laid off, as were thousands of people in industries indirectly connected with the auto industry. People who are laid off tend to keep what money they have for necessities, like food and housing. They do not have the extra money needed to send their children to college. Their children cannot pay their own college costs, because during a recession they cannot find jobs. High unemployment means that more state funds must be used for social service—unemployment benefits and to aid dependent children, for example—than during more prosperous times. It also means that the states have fewer funds than usual, because people are paying fewer taxes. Institutions of higher education depend on two major sources of income to keep them functioning: tuition from students and funds from the states. At the present time, there are fewer students than in the past and fewer state funds available for higher education. The colleges and universities are in trouble.第11题:What is the main idea of this passage?A.The rising of oil price drove up the price of everything.B.There were many reasons why higher education was in trouble in the 1970's.C.Birthrate began to decline in the USA in 1950's.D.High unemployment caused a lot of social problems.第12题:The phrase "laid off' can best be replaced by which of the following?A.Poor.B.Got rid of.C.Removed.D.Unemployed.第13题:American cars were not popular in their domestic markets because they were ______.A.smallB.gas consumingC.fuel efficientD.not attractive第14题:The colleges and universities were in trouble because of the following masons EXCEPT that ______.A.they couldn't get enough income to keep them runningB.young people couldn't afford the tuition feesC.keeping them running at the same level would cost much moreD.social services need more state funds because of the recession第15题:All of the following statements are true EXCEPT ______.A.young people couldn't afford their own tuition in the 1970'sB.it's difficult for graduates from colleges to find a job in the 1970'sC.fewer parents could afford to send their children to college because of the recession in 1970'sD.birthrate dropped in the 1970's because of the recessionPassage TwoAt some time in your life you may have a strong desire to do something strange or terrible. However, chances are that you don't act on your impulse, but let it pass instead. You know that to commit the action is wrong in some way and that other people will not accept your behavior.Perhaps the most interesting thing about the phenomenon of the behavior is how it can change over the years within the same society, how certain behavior and attitudes once considered taboo can become perfectly acceptable and natural at another point in time. Topics such as death, for example, were once considered so upsetting and unpleasant that it was a taboo to even talk about them. Now with the publication of important books such as On Death and Dying and Learning to Say Goodbye, people have become more aware of the importance of expressing feelings about death and, as a result, are more willing to talk about this taboo subject. One of the newest taboos in American society is the topic of fat. Unlike many other taboos, fat is a topic that Americans talk about constantly. It's not taboo to talk about fat; it's taboo to be fat. The "in" look is thin, not fat.In the work world, most companies prefer youthful-looking, trim executives to sell their image as well as their products to the public. The thin look is associated with youth, vigor and success. The fat person, on the other hand, is thought of as lazy and lacking in energy, self-respect. After all, people think, how can people who care about themselves, and therefore the way they look, permit themselves to become fat? In an image-conscious society like the U.S., thin is "in", fat is "out".第16题:According to the passage, we can infer that taboo is ______.A.a crime committed on impulseB.an unfavorable impression left on other peopleC.a behavior considered unacceptable by the publicD.a strong desire to do something strange or terrible第17题:Based on the ideas presented in the passage we can conclude that, in American society, "being fat" ______.A.has long been a tabooB.will always remain a tabooC.may no longer be a taboo somedayD.is not considered a taboo by most people第18题:Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.Death is a taboo topic today.B.It is taboo to talk about fat.C.The topic of fat is different from many other taboo subjects.D.Fat is a topic that Americans talk about very little.第19题:In the U.S., the expression that thin is "in" and fat is "out" probably means ______.A.thin is "diligent" and fat is "lazy"B.thin is "fashionable" and fat is "unfashionable"C.thin is "inside" and fat is "outside"D.thin is "spiritless" and fat is "vigorous"第20题:In the last sentence of the passage, the phrase "image-conscious society" can be replaced by ______.A.very imaginative society with nice appearanceB.fast-developing society which is built on a clear imageC.the society whose image has been mined because of moneyD.the society in which image has been attached importance toPassage ThreeOn Thursday afternoon Mrs. Clarke dressed for going out, took her handbag with her money and her key in it, pulled the door behind her to lock it and went to the over 60s Club. She always went there on Thursdays. It was a nice outing for an old woman who lived alone. At six o'clock she came home, let herself in and at once smelt cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke in her house? How? Had someone got in? She checked the back doorand the windows. All were locked or fastened, as usual. There was no sign of forced entry. Over a cup of tea she wondered whether someone might have a key that fitted her front door "a master key" perhaps. So she stayed at home the following Thursday. Nothing happened. Was anyone watching her movements? On the Thursday after that she went out at her usual time, dressed as usual, but she didn't go to the club. Instead she took a short cut home again, letting herself in through her garden and the back door. She settled down to wait. It was just after four o'clock when the front door bell rang. Mrs. Clarke was making a cup of tea at the time. The bell rang again, and then she heard her letter box being pushed open. With the kettle of boiling water in her hand, she moved quietly towards the front door. A long piece of wire appeared through the letter box, and then a hand. The wire turned and caught around the knob on the door lock. Mrs. Clarke raised the kettle and poured the water over the hand. There was a shout outside, and the skin seemed to drop off the fingers like a glove. The wire fell to the floor, the hand was pulled back, and Mrs. Clarke heard the sound of running feet.第21题:Mrs. Clarke looked forward to Thursday because ______.A.she worked at a club on ThursdayB.she had visitors on ThursdayC.she visited a club on ThursdayD.a special visitor came on Thursday第22题:If someone had made a forced entry ______.A.Mrs. Clarke would have found a broken door or windowB.he or she was still in the houseC.things would have been thrown aboutD.he or she would have needed a master key第23题:On the third Thursday Mrs. Clarke went out ______.A.because she didn't want to miss the club againB.to see if the thief was hanging about outsideC.to the club but then changed her mindD.in an attempt to trick the thief第24题:The lock on the front door was one which ______.A.needed a piece of wire to open itB.could be opened from outside without a keyC.couldn't be opened without a keyed a knob instead of a key第25题:The wire fell to the floor ______.A.because Mrs. Clarke refused to open the doorB.hen the man's glove dropped offC.because it was too hot to holdD.because the man just wanted to get awayPassage FourThere is evidence that the usual variety of high blood pressure is, in part, a familial disease. Since families have similar genes as well as similar environments, familial diseases could be due to shared genetic influences, to shared environmental factors, or to both. For some years, the role of one environmental factor commonly shared by families, namely dietary salt (i.e. sodium chloride), has been studies at Brook Haven National Laboratory. These studies suggest that frequent excess salt eating can lead to high blood pressure in man and animals. Some individuals, however, and some rats consume large amounts of salt without developing high blood pressure. No matter how strictly all environmental factors were controlled in these experiments, some salt-fed animals never developed high blood pressure whereas a few rapidly developed very serious high blood pressure followed by early death. These marked variations were interpreted to result from differences in genetic constitution.By mating in successive generations only those animals that failed to develop high blood pressure from salt eating, a resistant strain (the "R" strain) has been evolved in which consumption of large quantities of salt falls to influence the blood pressure significantly, in contrast, by mating only animals that quickly develop high blood pressure from salt, a sensitive strain ("S" strain) has also been developed. The availability of these two strains permits investigations not possible formerly. They provide a likely laboratory model on which to investigate some clinical (临床的) aspects of the human types of high blood pressure. More important, there might be the possibility of developing methods by which genetic likelihood of human beings to develop high blood pressure can be defined without waiting for its appearance. Radioactive (放射性的) sodium 22 was an important "tool" in working out the characteristics of the sodium chloride metabolism.第26题:The study of the effects of salt on high blood pressure was carried out ______.A.because members of the same family tend to used similar amounts of saltB.to explore the long-term use of a sodium-based substanceC.because it was proven that salt caused high blood pressureD.because of the availability of chemically pure salt第27题:It can be implied that the main difference between "S" and "R" strains is in their ______.A.need for sodium 22B.amount of salt intakeC.reaction to saltD.type of blood第28题:It is implied in the second paragraph that ______.A.a genetic factor is the main factor to develop high blood pressureB.amount of salt eating is an important factor to develop high blood pressureC.the rate to develop high blood pressure lies in the reaction to saltD.high blood pressure can be affected by mating第29题:Among the results of the research discussed in this passage, the most beneficial might be ______.A.development of diets free of saltB.the early identification of potential high blood pressure victimsC.an early cure for high blood pressureD.control of genetic agents that cause high blood pressure第30题:We can infer from the passage that ______.A.when salt is added to their diets, rats and human beings act in the same wayB.the near future will see a cure for high blood pressureC.the medical field is desperately in need of researchD.a tendency toward high blood pressure may be a genetic factor完型填空Many people wrongly believe that when people reach old age, their families place them in nursing homes. They are left in the hands of strangers for the rest of their lives. Their__31__children visit them only occasionally, but more often, they do not have any__32__visitors. The truth is that this idea is an unfortunate myth imaginary story. In fact, family members provide over 80 percent of the care__33__elderly people need. Samuel Preston, a sociologist, studied__34__the American family is changing. He reported that by the time the__35__American couple reaches40 years of age, they have more parents than children.__36__because people today live longer after an illness than people did years ago, family members must provide long term care. More psychologists have found that all caregivers share a common characteristic: All caregivers believe that they are the best people for the job. In other words, they all felt that they__37__do the job better than anyone else. Social workers interviewed caregivers to find out why they took on the responsibility of caring for an elderly relative. Many caregivers believed they had__38__to help their relative. Some stated that helping others would__39__them feel more useful. Others hoped that by helping__40__now, they would deserve care when they became old and dependent. A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents"principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.第11题Eagerly watching the child"s acquisition of new skills______.A.should be avoidedB.is universal among parentsC.sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD.will make him lose interest in learning new things第12题In the process of children"s learning new skills parents______.A.should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they readB.should not expect too much of themC.should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their ownD.should create as many learning opportunities as possible第13题The second paragraph mainly tells us that______.A.parents should be strict with their childrenB.parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the communityC.parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children aloneD.parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation第14题The word "precept"(Para. They fear that"assembly-line life" will lead to the disappearance of the pleasures of the more graceful and leisurely old French style.

阅读理解Real policemen hardly recognize any resemblance (类同之处)between their lives and what they see on TV--if they ever get home in time. There are similarities, of course, but the cops(警官) don't think muchof them. The first difference is that a policeman's real life revolves round the law. Most of his training is in criminal law. He has to know exactly what actions are crimes and what evidence can be used to prove them in court. He has to know nearly as much law as a professional lawyer, and what is more, he has to apply it on his feet, in the dark and rain, running down an alley after someone he wants to talk to.Little of his time is spent in chatting to scanty-clad ([穿衣不多的) ladies or in dramatic confrontations with desperate criminals. He will spend most of his working life typing millions of words on thousands of forms about hundreds of sad, unimportant people who are guilt or not--of stupid, petty crimes.第11题:It is essential for a policeman to be .trained in criminal law______.A.so that he can catch criminals in the streetsB.because many of the criminals he has to catch are dangerousC.so that he can justify his arrests in courtD.because he has to know nearly as much about law as a professional lawyer参考答案:C答案解析:答案出处见第二段第二行Most of his training is in criminal law. He has to know exactly what actions are crimes and what evidence can be used to prove them in court.第12题:The everyday life of a policeman or detective is ______.A.exciting and glamorousB.full of dangerC.devoted mostly to routine mattersD.wasted on unimportant matters参考答案:C答案解析:第三段第二行中提到警探He will spend most of his working life typing millions of words on thousands of forms... ,此处的typing... words on... forms 即为警探的routine work(日常工作)。

第13题:The word "confrontation" in the last paragraph most probably means______.A.oppositionB.determinationC.protectionD.confusion参考答案:A答案解析:本题的关键是确定“confrontation”一词的线索。

可以看出,下一句是警察的日常工作,与上面的句子意思相对应。

confrontation with criminals 意思为“与警察对峙”,所以答案最接近A选项。

第14题:Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.Generally the detective's work is over once the arrest has been made.B.Policemen feel that the image of their lives shown on TV is not accurate.C.People are usually willing to give evidence.D.Policemen and detectives spend little time at the typewriter.参考答案:B答案解析:本题的依据在文章第一段Real policemen hardly recognize any resemblance between their lives and what they see on TV--if they ever get home in time. There are similarities,of course, but the cops don't think much of them.第15题:______ could be a suitable title for the passage.A.Policemen and DetectivesB.Detectives' Life--Fact and FantasyC.The Reality of Being a DetectiveD.Drama and Reality参考答案:B答案解析:本文讲述的主要是警探的真实生活和他们出现在电视银屏上的形象之间的差别,故此选项最为合适。
