The importance of punctuality is taught to young children in school. Tardy slips and the use of bells signal to the child that punctuality and time itself are to be respected. People who keep appointments areconsidered dependable. If people are late to job interviews, appointments, or classes, they are often viewed as unreliable and irresponsible. In the business world, "time is money" and companies may fine their executives for tardiness to business meetings. Of course, it is not always possible to be punctual. Social and business etiquette also provides rules for late arrivals. Calling on the telephone if one is going to be more than a few minutes late for scheduled appointments is considered polite and is often expected. Keeping a date of a friend waiting beyond ten to twenty minutes is considered rude. On the other hand, arriving thirty minutes late to some parties is acceptable.第11题The best title for the passage is ______.A.PunctualityB.TimeC.EtiquetteD.Culture第12题Children in America are taught to ______.A.be on time when doing thingsB.respect their teachersC.take their time when doing thingsD.respect their time第13题If a person is late for business meeting, he may ______.A.be firedB.be criticized by his bossC.be required to apologizeD.be made to pay第14题Social etiquette in the United States allows people to ______.A.be a few minutes late for interviewsB.be up to a half-hour late for some partiesC.keep a friend waiting for less than 30 minutese a few minutes earlier to any appointment第15题"Time is money" here means ______.A.time is very important in the business worldB.time can bring you moneyC.if you hurry, you can get some moneyD.if you are late, you will lose money上一题下一题(16~20/共20题)阅读理解Complimentary Dow Jones News Get Dow Jones Real-Time News for Investors at no charge with your Scottrade account! But unlike humans, plants can have their temperature taken from 3,000 feet away—straight up. A decade ago, adapting the infrared scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide (杀虫剂) spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that don"t have pest (害虫) problems. Even better, Paley"s Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3,000 feet at night, an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were。

But in fact, the opposite is true: more often than not things that lead to happiness involve some pain. As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment(承担的义务), self improvement. Ask a bachelor(单身汉) why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure, excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features. Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night"s sleep or a three day vacation. I don"t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couple who decide not to have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild. Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.第11题According to the author, a bachelor resists marriage chiefly because______.A.he is reluctant to take on family responsibilitiesB.he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains singleC.he finds more fun in dating than in marriageD.he fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement第12题Raising children, in the author"s opinion, is______.A.a moral dutyB.a thankless jobC.a rewarding taskD.a source of inevitable pain第13题From the last paragraph, we learn that envy sometimes stems from ______.A.hatredB.misunderstandingC.prejudiceD.ignorance第14题To understand what true happiness is one must______.A.have as much fun as possible during one"s lifetimeB.make every effort to liberate oneself from painC.put up with pain under all circumstancesD.be able to distinguish happiness from fun第15题What is the author trying to tell us?A.Happiness often goes hand in hand with pain.B.One must know how to attain happiness.C.It is important to make commitments.D.It is pain that leads to happiness.上一题下一题(16~20/共20题)阅读理解Hurricanes are violent storms that cause millions of dollars in property damage and take many lives. They can be extremely dangerous, and too often people underestimate their fury. Hurricanes normally originate as a small area of thunderstorms over the Atlantic Ocean west of the Cape Verde Islands during August or September. For several days, the area of the storm increases and the air pressure falls slowly. A center of low pressure forms, and winds begin to whirl around it. It is blown westward, increasing in size and strength. Hurricane hunters then fly out to the storm in order to determine its size and intensity and to track its direction. They drop instruments for recording temperature, air pressure, and humidity(湿度), into the storm. They also look at the size of waves on the ocean, the clouds, and the eye of the storm. The eye is a region of relative calm and clear skies in the center of the hurricane. People often lose their lives by leaving shelter when the eye has arrived, only to be caught in tremendous winds again when the eye has passed. Once the forecasters have determined that it is likely the hurricane will reach shore, they issue a hurricane watch for a large, general area that may be in the path of the storm. Later, when the probable point of landfall is clearer, they will issue a hurricane warning for a somewhat more limited area. People in these areas are wise to stock up on nonperishable foods, flash light and radio batteries, candles, and other items they may need if electricity and water are not available after the stoma. They should also try to hurricane-proof their houses by bringing in light-weight furniture and other items from outside and covering windows. People living in low-lying areas are wise to evacuate their houses because of the storm surge, which is a large rush of water that may come ashore with the storm. Hurricanes generally lose power slowly while traveling over land, but many move out to sea, gather up force again, and return to land. As they move toward the north, they generally lose their identity as hurricanes.第16题The eye of the hurricane is______.A.the powerful center of the stormB.the part that determines its directionC.the relatively calm center of the stormD.the center of low pressure第17题Which of the following statements is true?A.A storm surge is a dramatic increase in wind velocity.B.A hurricane watch is more serious than a hurricane warning.C.Falling air pressure is an indicator that the storm is increasing in intensity.D.It is safe to go outside once the eye has arrived.第18题Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?______.A.How to Avoid Hurricane DamageB.Forecasting HurricanesC.The dangerous HurricaneD.Atlantic Storms第19题The low-lying areas refer to those regions that______.A.close to the ground levelB.one-storey flatC.flat housesD.near to the lowest level of hurricane第20题Which of the following is NOT a method of protecting one"s house from a hurricane?______.A.taking out heavy thingsB.moving in light-weight furnitureC.equipping the house with stonesD.covering windows上一题下一题(21~25/共20题)阅读理解Priscilla Ouchida"s "energy-efficient" house turned out to be a horrible dream. When she and her engineer husband married a few years ago, they built a $100,000, three-bedroom home in California. Tightly sealed to prevent air leaks, the house was equipped with small double-paned(双层玻璃的) windows and several other energy-saving features. Problems began as soon as the couple moved in, however. Priscilla"s eyes were burned. Her throat was constantly dry. She suffered from headaches and could hardly sleep. It was as though she had suddenly developed a strange illness. Experts finally traced the cause of her illness. The level of formaldehyde(甲醛) gas in her kitchen was twice the maximum allowed by federal standards for chemical workers. The source of the gas? Her new kitchen cabinets and wall-to-wall carpeting. The Ouchidas are victims of indoor air pollution, which is not given sufficient attention partly because of the nation"s drive to save energy. The problem itself isn"t new. "The indoor environment was dirty long before energy conservation came along", says Moschandreas, a pollution scientist at Geomet Technologies in Maryland. "Energy conservation has tended to accentuate the situation in some cases". The problem appears to be more troublesome in newly constructed homes rather than old ones. Back in the days when energy was cheap, home builders didn"t worry much about unsealed cracks. Because of such leaks, the air in an average home was replaced by fresh outdoor air about once an hour. As a result, the pollutants generated in most households seldom built up to dangerous levels.第21题It can be learned from the passage that the Ouchidas" house______.A.is well worth the money spent on its constructionB.is almost faultless from the point of energy conservationC.failed to meet energy conservation standardsD.was designed and constructed in a scientific way第22题What made the Ouchidas" new house a horrible dream?ck of fresh air.B.Poor quality of building materials.。

Paintings by Ruby, an Asian elephant who lived at the Phoenix Zoo in Arizona, sold for up to $5,000 in the late 1980s, said Dick George, a consultant with the zoo. "Ruby was about seven months old when she first came to the zoo", said George. "She lived with a goat and some chickens, but she didn"t have an elephant companion for a number ofyears. She spent a lot of time drawing in the dirt with a stick to make her days more stimulating. Her keeper bought her some art supplies". George said, ", Ruby was excited about painting right from the beginning". The elephants at the art academies in the Southeast Asia are taught to hold a paintbrush with the tip of their trunks. Initially, the keeper guides the elephant"s trunk over the canvas(画布) and offers rewards for good performance. A competitive personality is seen as important to success, especially in men. The development of social and political skills is also considered to be very important. To help Americans develop these other important skills, schools have added a large number of extracurricular(课程外)activities to daily life at school. This is especially tree of high schools and colleges and extends down into elementary schools as well. Athletics, frequently called "competitive sports", are perhaps the most important of these activities. Football, basketball, and baseball teams are seen as very important in teaching students, particularly boys, the "winning spirit". At times, athletic teams seem to become more important to some students and their parents than the academic programs offered by the schools.第16题Americans believe that education is ______.A.the only way to successB.the main purpose of the schoolsC.just like climbing laddersD.important to success第17题Which of the following is NOT mentioned as important to success?A.intellectual achievementpetitive personalityC.social backgroundsD.social and political skills第18题A variety of extracurricular activities are added in American schools ______.A.to help students climb the education ladderB.to enrich students" dull life at schoolC.to help students become more successful in later lifeD.to extend college education down into elementary schools第19题Athletic activities are designed ______.A.to make boys strongerB.to teach students winning spiritC.to develop students" social and political skillsD.to improve the academic programs第20题Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?cation and SuccessB.Extracurricular Activities at SchoolC.Athletic SportsD.Intellectual Achievement上一题下一题(21~25/共20题)阅读理解People once widely believed that intelligent life existed on Mars. The 19th-century discovery of what appeared to be geometric designs cut across the surface was taken as evidence. The lines were thought to have been a system of canals that had been built to irrigate the surface. It is now clear that "canals"—perhaps the most spectacular geologic features of Mars—are natural valleys where ancient rivers once flowed. Another fragmented idea concerns the planet"s seasonal changes in color. Once attributed to the rapid spread of some life-form, these shifts are nowknown to develop from the movement of fine dust in the atmosphere. By the close of the 20th century none of the many experiments conducted by spacecraft had ever found persuasive evidence of life. Nevertheless, speculation continued over the existence of some form of life, in either the present or the past. In 1996 scientists discovered organic compounds and minerals in a meteorite(陨石), consisting of Martian rock, that collided with Earth around 11,000 B.C. These compounds suggest that Mars may have been inhabited by organisms more than three billion years ago.第21题Why did people in the 19th century believe the existence of intelligent life on Mars?A.Because the surface of Mars seemed to be geometric.B.Because the lines were drawn across the surface of the planet.C.Because a system of canals was thought to be there.D.Because it was the Martians that built the canals.第22题The "canals" on Mars have proved to be ______ according to the passage.A.the minor geologic characteristic of MarsB.natural valleys on the surface of MarsC.rivers that have kept flowing since ancient timesD.a system that irrigates the whole surface第23题What were the Mars" seasonal changes in color believed to be?A.The natural changes on the planet.B.The seasonal cycles.C.The movement of some life form.D.The storm of dust in its atmosphere.第24题How is the 1996 discovery related to the possible existence of organisms on Mars?A.The meteorite containing organic compounds is part of Mars.B.A Martian rock struck Earth about 11,000 years ago.C.The organisms came back to life after the collision with Earth.D.The inhabiting organisms appeared more than three billion years ago.第25题How many arguments in this passage lead to the belief of the existence of life on Mars?A.Two.B.Three.C.Four.D.Five.上一题下一题(26~30/共20题)阅读理解Weather Forecast The following forecast shows for the listed cities the projected weather conditions and the expected range of temperatures from the afternoon high to the evening low. 图片第26题According to the forecast, ______.A.Kansas City will be warmer than TorontoB.temperatures will be the lowest in Seattle and MinneapolisC.the weather will be fine in most of the listed citiesD.more than half of the listed cities ore cloudy or rain likely第27题Among the following four cities, the difference between the afternoon high and the evening low is smallest in ______.A.Kansas CityB.MiamiC.AtlantaD.Seattle第28题Which of the following cities is closest m Miami in weather conditions?A.BostonB.AtlantaC.WashingtonD.Houston第29题The difference between the afternoon high and the evening low is greatest in ______.A.SeattleB.Los Angeless VegasD.Phoenix第30题The differences between the afternoon high and the evening low are the same in ______.A.Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, and St. LouisB.Atlanta, San Francisco, New Orleans, and SeattleC.Cleveland, Dallas, St. Louis, and Washington,D.C.D.Pittsburg, Miami, Houston, and Boston上一题下一题(31~40/共10题)完型填空How much sleep does a person need?【B1】the physiological bases of the need for sleep remain conjectural(猜想), rendering conclusive answers to this question impossible, much evidence has been gathered on how much sleep people do in fact obtain. One theory claims that prehistoric birds of the Northern Hemisphere were forced south during the Ice Age. As the glaciers melted, the birds came back to their homelands, spent the summer, and then went south again as the ice advanced in winter. In time, the migration became a habit in spite of the disappearance of glaciers.Another theory proposes that the ancestral home of all modem birds was the tropics. When the region became overpopulated, many species were crowded north. During the summer, there was plenty of food, but during the winter, scarcity forced them to return to the tropics.A more recent theory suggests a relationship between increasing daylight and the stimulation of certain glands (腺) inthe birds' bodies that may prepare them for migration. One scientist has been able to cause midwinter migrations by exposing birds to artificial periods of daylight. He has concluded that changes occur in the bodies of birds due to seasonal changes in the length of daylight.第11题:According to one theory, when the glaciers disappeared, birds ______.A.stopped migratingB.continued migratingC.stayed in the northD.migrated south and stayed there第12题:The author states that birds left the tropics because ______.A.there was not enough food there in the winterB.there were too many birdsC.there were too many glaciersD.there was too much daylight第13题:Why did one scientist expose birds to artificial daylight?A.To test the relationship between daylight and a disease of the glands common to birds.B.To test the relationship between daylight and migration.C.To test the relationship between migration and temperature.D.To test the relationship between daylight and changes in the season.第14题:According to the theory of photo-periodism, ______.A.birds should migrate in the middle of the winterB.longer days cause changes in the bodies of birdsC.seasonal changes in the length of days do not affect migrationD.increasing daylight increases the distance of migrationThis passage supports the belief that ______.A.exact reasons for migration are not knownB.birds migrate because of changes in temperatureC.the ancestral home of all birds was the tropicsD.glaciers caused birds to migrateIn Guangzhou, capital of South China's Guangdong Province, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport resumed its international flights to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and other Southeast Asian nations and regions early this month, said an airport official yesterday. Their friends, with good will, sometimes lean forward to rearrange their neckwear, touching their hair or patting their faces--things they would never presume to do, unasked, to one of their contemporaries. An equally humiliating habit is to talk about old people in front of them as if they were not there, discussing their health. It is now universally accepted that children should be encouraged to do as much as they can for themselves in order to develop their brains and muscles, but so few people today seem to have time to allow the elderly the same means of keeping their minds and muscles active. They perform innumerable services for the old that they would be much better left to do, even with a struggle, for themselves.Convenient flats, "motherly" visitors, or organized entertainments cannot make up for the fundamental need which must be satisfied--the need to retain to the end of life human dignity and the respect of one's fellows.第21题:Many people are not aware that it is rather rude to ______.A.talk casually about old people in front of them as if they were not thereB.show sympathy for the oldC.take care of the old when they are not illD.pat the faces of the contemporaries第22题:According to the passage the old would very much like to ______.A.live aloneB.live in comfortable and well-run homesC.be treated as adults instead of babiesD.get unselfish help from their friends and relatives第23题:The author suggests that ______.A.much sympathy will inevitably humiliate the oldB.kindness and unselfish help are not necessarily what the old needC.the old should be left to do whatever they want by themselvesD.to the old, the friends' and relatives' respect is, at least, as important as their concern第24题:If the old are left to do as much as they can for themselves, ______.A.they may keep human dignity and enjoy the respect of the fellowsB.they won't feel hurt or humiliatedC.they will be able to develop their brains and musclesD.they will be able to keep their minds and muscles active第25题:The passage is mainly about that ______.A.improper care and concern may do more harm than good to the oldB.how to take good care of the old in different waysC.nowadays many people are not respectful enough to the oldD.old people are just like children, who are difficult to satisfyON DEMAND BUSINESS.IN DEMAND PEOPLE.CAREERS IN IBM ARE ALL ABOUT OPPORTUNITIESWorld leading multinational IT company. The games got their name from Olympia, the Greek city where they took place. Like the summer Olympics of today, the ancient Olympics were held every four years. Thousands of people from all over the Greek world came to watch. The main stadium held about 45,000 people. "We have accounts of visitors and pilgrims setting uptents all around the site", Lisa Cerrato of Tufts University said. During the first Olympics, there was only one competition—a 200-meter race. But over time the games grew to include wrestling, chariot racing, boxing, and other sports. Women were not allowed to compete, but they had their own separate games. "The ancient athlete became celebrities(名人), just like today. They often lived the rest of their lives being treated to free dinners", Cerrato said. "City-states even tried to steal away each other"s athletes by offering them various awards". The ancient Olympics existed until A.D. 393. Just as bodies require more maintenance with the passing years, so do brains, which scientists now know show signs of aging as early as the 20s and 30s. "Brain aging starts at a very young age, younger than any of us had imagined and these processes continue gradually over theyears", said Dr. Gary Small, the director of the Center on Aging at the University of California, Los Angeles. "I"m convinced that it is never too early to get started on a mental or brain-fitness program", he added. In his book, The Memory Bible, the 51-year-old neuroscientist(神经学家) lists what he refers to as the 10 suggestions for keeping the brain young. They include training memory, building skills, reducing stress, mental exercises, brain food and a healthy lifestyle. It"s a game plan for keeping brain cells sparking and neural networks in perfect shape. "Misplacing your keys a couple of times don"t mean you should start labeling your cabinets. Memory loss is not an inevitable consequence of aging. Our brains can fight back", he said. Small provides the weapons for a fun-scale attack Simple memory tests give an indication of what you are up against and tools such as "look" and "connect" are designed to make sure that important things such as names and dates are never forgotten. "So if you wanted to learn names and faces, for example, you meet Mrs. Beatty and you notice a distinguishing facial feature, maybe a high eyebrow", said Small. "You associate the first thing that comes to mind. I think of the actor Warren Beatty so I create a mental picture of Warren Beatty kissing her brow". Small admits it may sound a bit strange but he says it works. "Mental exercises could be anything from doing crossword puzzles and writing with your left hand if you are right handed or learning a language. It could be anything that is fun that people enjoy doing", he added. He also recommends physical exercise, a low-fat diet and eating foods rich in fatty acids, such as fish, nuts, and fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants(抗氧化剂) including blueberries and onions in addition to reducing stress.第16题The "mad moments" in the first paragraph refers to the time when we______.A.don"t listen to our friendsB.have lost our important thingsC.have some mental problemsD.have a bad memory第17题In this passage, the author mainly tells us ______.A.everyone has bad memories sometimes no matter how old he isB.we can prevent our mind from aging with various methodsC.brain aging starts at the time when we are in the 20s and 30sD.memory lost is not the sign that we are getting old第18题By giving the example "you meet Mrs. Beatty and you notice a distinguishing.., eyebrow", Dr. Small is trying to explain the memory tool of______.A.lookB.physical exercisesC.connectD.mental exercises第19题By saying "I think of the actor Warren Beatty so I create…, he r brow", Dr. Small is trying to explain the memory tool of______.A.remembering facial featuresB.reducing stressC.connecting related thingsD.observing carefully第20题Mental exercises do NOT include______.A.writing with one"s left handB.learning a foreign languageC.doing crossword puzzlesD.taking pictures上一题下一题(21~25/共20题)阅读理解Astronaut Jim Voss has enjoyed many memorable moments in his career, including three space flights and one space walk. But he recalls with special fondness a decidedly earthbound(只在地球上的) experience in the summer of 1980 when he participated in the NASA-ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program. Voss, then a science teacher at West Point was assigned to the Marshall Space Flight Center"s propulsion(推进) lab in Alabama to analyze why a hydraulic fuel pump seal on the space shuttle was working so well when previous seals had failed. It was a seemingly tiny problem among the vast complexities of running the space program` Yet it was important to NASA because any crack in the seal could have led to destructive results for the astronauts who relied on them. "I worked a bit with NASA engineers, "says Voss, "but I did it mostly by analysis. I used a handheld calculator, not a computer, to do a thermodynamic(热力学的) analysis. "At the end of the summer, he, like the other NASA-ASEE fellows working at Marshall summarized his findings in a formal presentation and detailed paper. It was a valuable moment for Voss because the ASEE program gave him added understanding of NASA, deepened his desire to fly in space, and intensified his application for astronaut status. It was not an easy process. Voss was actually passed over when he first applied for the astronaut program in 1987. Since then he has participated in three space mission. The 50-year-old Army officer, who lives in Houston, is now in training for a four-month mission as a crew member on the International Space Station starting in July 2000. Voss says the ASEE program is wonderful for all involved. "It brings in people from the academic world and gives NASA a special property for a particular period of time. It brings some fresh eyes and fresh ideas to NASA, and establishes a link with colleges and universities", Voss explains". There is an exchange of information and an exchange of perspectives that is very important". Environmentalists and concerned local residents, for instance, might immediately suspect environmental radiation as the culprit when a high incidence of cancer cases occurs near a nuclear facility. Epidemiologists, in contrast, would be more likely to say that the incidences were "inconclusive" or the result of pure chance. And when a breast cancer survivor, Lorraine Pace, mapped 20 breast cancer cases occurring in her West Islip, Long Island, community, her rudimentary research efforts were guided more by hope that a specific environmental agent could be correlated with the cancers than by scientific method. When epidemiologists study clusters of cancer cases and other noncontagious conditions such as birth defects or miscarriage, they take several variables into account, such as background rate (the number of people affected in the general population), cluster size, and specificity (any notable characteristics of the individual affected in each case). If a cluster is both large and specific, it is easier for epidemiologists to assign blame. Not only must each variable be considered on its own, but it must also be combined with others. Lung cancer is very common in the general population. Yet when a huge number of cases turned up among World War II shipbuilders who had all worked with asbestos, the size of the cluster and the fact that the men had had similar occupational asbestos exposures enabled epidemiologists to assign blame to the fibrous mineral.Although several known carcinogens have been discovered through these kinds of occupational or medical clusters, only one community cancercluster has ever been traced to an environmental cause. Health officials often discount a community's suspicion of a common environmental cause because citizens tend to include cases that were diagnosed before the afflicted individuals moved into the neighborhood. Add to this the problem of cancer's latency. Unlike an infectious disease such as cholera, which is caused by a recent exposure to food or water contaminated with the cholera bacterium, cancer may have its roots in an exposure that occurred 10 to 20 years earlier.Do all these caveats mean that the hard work of Lorraine Pace and other community activists is for nothing? Not necessarily. Together with many other reports of breast cancer clusters on Long Island, the West Islip situation highlighted by Pace has helped epidemiologists lay the groundwork for a well designed scientific study.第16题:The "hope" mentioned in Paragraph 1 refers specifically to Pace's desire to______.A.help reduce the incidence of breast cancer in future generationsB.improve her chances of surviving breast cancerC.determine the cause responsible for her own breast cancer caseD.identify a particular cause for the breast cancer cases in West Islip第17题:The case of the World War II shipbuilders with lung cancer is an example of______.A.an occupational clusterB.a medical clusterC.a radiation clusterD.an environmental cluster第18题:The passage suggests that the fact that "only one community cancer cluster bas ever been traced to all environmental cause" (in the third paragraph) is most likely due to the______.A.methodological difficulties in analyzing community cancer clustersB.reluctance of epidemiologists to investigate environmental factors in cancerck of credibility of citizen activists in claiming to have identified cancer agentsD.effectiveness of regulations restricting the use of carcinogens in residential areas第19题:Activists may mistakenly consider a particular incidence of cancer as part of a community cluster despite the fact that______.A.the affected individual never worked with any carcinogenic materialB.the cancer was actually caused by a long-ago exposureC.the size of the cluster is too small to be meaningfulD.the cancer actually arose in a different geographic location第20题:The word "caveats" (in the last paragraph) refers to______.A.refusals by epidemiologists to examine the work of Pace and other activistsB.potential flaws in amateur studies of cancer clusterC.warnings by activists concerning environmental dangers in their communitiesD.tendencies of activists to assume environmental causes for cancerIn the same way that a child must be able to move his arms and legs before he can learn to walk, the child must physiologically be capable of producing and experiencing particular emotions before these emotions can be modified through learning. Psychologists have found that there are two basic processes by which learning takes place. One kind of learning is called "classical conditioning." This occurs when one event or stimulus is continuously followed by a reward or punishment. It is through classical conditioning that a child learns to associate his mother's face and voice with happiness and love, for he learns that this person provides food and comfort. Negative emotions are learned in a similar fashion. The second kind of learning is called "operant (动作的) conditioning." This occurs when an individual learns to do things that produce rewards in his environment and learns not to do things that produce punishments. For example, if a mother always attends to her baby when he cries and cuddles him until he is quiet, she may teach him that if he cries he will get attention from mother. Thus, the baby will learn to increase his crying in order to have his mother more.第21题:The main purpose of this passage is to ______.A.teach children how to learn to produce and experience certain emotionsB.give the common reader a general description of two basic kinds of learningC.give parents some advice on how to modify their children's emotions through learningD.discuss with psychologists how positive and negative feelings are produced第22题:If a child is bitten or startled several times by a dog, he may learn toassociate furry (有毛皮的) animals with pain or startle and thus develop a fear of furry animals. This is a typical example of learning through ______.A.classical conditioningB.operant conditioningC.both A and BD.neither A nor B第23题:If your jokes often find a ready echo in a person, you will learn through ______ that telling jokes to this person is fun, and you will try with greater efforts to be humorous in his presence.A.classical conditioningB.operant conditioningC.neither A nor BD.some other sorts of conditioning第24题:The word "cuddle" in Para. 2 most probably means ______.A.persuadeB.hold close and lovelyC.threatenD.shout at第25题:How can a mother help the baby to cry less?A.Cuddle the baby until he is quiet.B.Leave the baby alone.C.Do not always attend to the baby.D.Teach the baby not to cry.The rise of multinational corporations (跨国公司), global marketing, new communications technologies, and shrinking cultural differences have 1ed to an unparalleled increase in global public relations or PR.Surprisingly, since modem PR was largely an American invention, the U.S. leadership in public relations is being threatened by PR efforts in other countries. Ten years ago, for example, the world's top five public relations agencies were American-owned. In 1991, only one was. The British in particular are becoming more sophisticated and creative. A recent survey found that more than half of all British companies include PR as part of their corporate (公司的) planning activities, compared to about one-third of U.S. companies. It may not be long before London replaces New York as the capital of PR.Why is America lagging behind in the global PR race? First,Americans as a whole tend to be fairly provincial and take more of an interest in local affairs. Knowledge of world geography, for example, has never been strong in this country. Secondly, Americans lag behind their European and Asian counterparts (相对应的人) in knowing a second language. Less than 5 percent of Burson-Marshall's U.S. employees know two languages. Ogilvy and Mather has about the same percentage. Conversely, some European firms have half or more of their employees fluent in a second language. Finally, people involved irt PR abroad tend to keep a closer eye on international affairs. In the financial PR area, for instance, most Americans read the Wall Street Journal. Overseas, their counterparts read the Journal as well as the Financial Times of London and The Economist, publications not often read in this country.Perhaps the PR industry might take a lesson from Ted Turner of CNN(Cable News Network). Turner recently announced that the word "foreign" would no longer be used on CNN news broadcasts. According to Turner, global communications have made the nations of the world so interdependent that there is no longer any such thing as foreign.第26题:According to the passage, U.S. leadership in public relations is being threatened becauseA.an unparalleled increase in the number of public relations companiesB.shrinking cultural differences and new communications technologiesC.the decreasing number of multinational corporations in the U.S.D.increased efforts of other countries in public relations第27题:London could soon replace New York as the center of PR because ______.A.British companies are more ambitious than U.S. companiesB.British companies place more importance on PR than U.S. companiesC.British companies are heavily involved in planning activitiesD.four of the world's top public relations agencies are British-owned第28题:The word "provincial" (Line 2, Para. 3) most probably means" ______".A.limited in outlookB.like people from the provincesC.rigid in thinkingD.interested in world financial affairs第29题:We learn from the third paragraph that employees in the American PR industry ______.A.speak at least one foreign language fluentlyB.are ignorant about world geographyC.are not as sophisticated as their European counterpartsD.enjoy reading a great variety of English business publications第30题:What lesson might the PR industry take from Ted Turner of CNN?A.American PR companies should be more internationally-minded.B.The American PR industry should develop global communications technologies.C.People working in PR should be more fluent in foreign languages.D.People involved in PR should avoid Using the word "foreign".完型填空As the plane circled over the airport, everyone sensed that something was wrong. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set updangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself. Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are severe over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child"s own happiness. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality(道德). Also, parents should realize that "example is better than precept". If they are not sincere and do not practise what they preach(说教), their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled. A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents"principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.第11题Eagerly watching the child"s acquisition of new skills______.A.should be avoidedB.is universal among parentsC.sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD.will make him lose interest in learning new things第12题In the process of children"s learning new skills parents______.A.should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they readB.should not expect too much of themC.should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their ownD.should create as many learning opportunities as possible第13题The second paragraph mainly tells us that______.A.parents should be strict with their childrenB.parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the communityC.parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children aloneD.parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation第14题The word "precept"(Para. 3) probably means"______"A.ideaB.punishmentC.behaviourD.instruction第15题In moral matters, parents should______.A.observe the rules themselvesB.be aware of the marked difference between adults and childrenC.forbid things which have no foundation in moralityD.consistently ensure the security of their children上一题下一题(16~20/共20题)阅读理解图片第16题The service in the first advertisement is directed to the following EXCEPT ______.A.contract organizationsB.real estate companiesC.individual personsD.special construction companies第17题The services provided in the first advertisement do not include ______.A.demolishing housesB.cleaning up construction sitesC.transporting machinesD.headache curing第18题Golden Touch Construction is ______.A.a private companyB.a national agencyC.an international cooperationD.charge-free organization第19题Services provided by Golden Touch Construction include ______.A.kitchen decorationB.bathroom buildingC.bar demolitionD.house purchase第20题Both ads promised to provide ______.A.insuranceB.cheap priceC.free estimatesD.free designing上一题下一题(21~25/共20题)阅读理解Concern with money, and then more money, in order to buy the conveniences and luxuries of modern life, has brought great changes to the lives of most Frenchmen. More people are working than ever before in France. In the cities the traditional leisurely midday meal is disappearing. Offices, shops and factories are discovering the greater efficiency of a short lunch hour in company lunchrooms. In almost all lines of work emphasis now falls on ever-increasing output. Thus the "typical" Frenchman produces more, earns more, and buys more consumer goods than his counterpart of only a generation ago. He gains in creature comforts and ease of life. What he loses to some extent is his sense of personal uniqueness, or individuality. Some say that France has been Americanized. This is because the United States is a world symbol of thetechnological society and its consumer products. The so-called Americanization of France has its critics. They fear that"assembly-line life" will lead to the disappearance of the pleasures of the more graceful and leisurely old French style. What will happen, they ask, to taste, elegance, and the cultivation of the good things in life-to joy in the smell of a freshly picked apple, a stroll by the river, or just happy hours of conversation in a local cafe? Since the late 1940"s life in France has indeed taken on qualities of rush, tension, and the pursuit of material gain. Some of the strongest critics of the new way of life are the young, especially university students. They are concerned with the future, and they fear that France is threatened by the triumph of the competitive, goods-oriented culture. Occasionally, they have reacted against the trend with considerable violence. In spite of the critics, however, countless Frenchmen are committed to keeping France in the forefront of the modem economic world. They find that the present life brings more rewards, conveniences, and pleasures than that of the past. They believe that a modern, industrial France is preferable to the old.第21题Which of the following is not given as a feature of the old French way of life?A.Leisure.B.Elegance.C.Efficiency.D.Tast第22题Which of the following is not related to the new French way of life?A.Shorter lunch hour.B.Greater output.C.Creature comfort.D.Leisurely cafe talk.第23题Nowadays few Frenchmen ______.A.prefer the modern life styleB.actually enjoy working at the assembly lineC.are more concerned with money than in the pastD.are more competitive than the old generation第24题The passage suggests that ______.A.in pursuing material gains the Frenchmen are suffering losses elsewhereB.it"s now unlikely to see a Frenchman enjoying a stroll by the riverC.the French are fed up with the smell of freshly picked applesD.great changes have occurred in the life style of all Frenchmen第25题Which of the following best states the main idea of the passage?A.Changes in the French way of life.B.Criticism of the new life style.C.The Americanization of France.D.Features of the new way of lif上一题下一题。

Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A B C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passageIn the 1960s medical researchers Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe developed a checklist of stressful events. They appreciated thetricky point that any major change can be stressful. Negative events like “serious illness of a family member” were high on the listbut so were some positive life-changing events like marriage. When you take the Holmes-Rahe test you must remember that the score does not reflect how you deal with stress—it only shows how much you have to deal with. And we now know that the way you handle these events dramatically affects your chances of staying healthy.By the early 1970s hundreds of similar studies had followed Holmes and Rahe. And millions of Americans who work and live under stress worried over the reports. Somehow the research got boiled down to a memorable message. Women’s magazines ran headlines like “Stress causes illness” If you want to stay physically and mentally healthy the articles said avoid stressful events. But such simplistic advice is impossible to follow. Even if stressful events are dangerous many—like the death of a loved one—are impossible to avoid. Moreover any warning to avoid all stressful events is a prescription (处方) for staying away from opportunities as well as trouble. Since any change can be stressful a person who wanted to be completely free of stress would never marry have a child take a new job or move. The notion that all stress makes you sick also ignores a lot of what we know about people. It assumes we’re all vulnerable (脆弱的) and passive in the face of adversity (逆境). But what about human initiative and creativity﹖ Many come through periods of stress with more physical and mental vigor than they had before. We also knowthat a long time without change or challenge can lead to boredomand physical and mental strain.21. The result of Holmes-Rahe’s medical research tells us ____ .A the way you handle major events may cause stressB what should be done to avoid stressC what kind of event would cause stressD how to cope with sudden changes in life22. The studies on stress in the early 1970’s led to ____ .A widespread concern over its harmful effectsB great panic over the mental disorder it could causeC an intensive research into stress-related illnessesD popular avoidance of stressful jobs23. The score of the Holmes-Rahe test shows ____ .A how much pressure you are underB how positive events can change you lifeC how stressful a major event can beD how you can deal with life-changing events24. Why is “such simplistic advice”Line 1Para.3 impossible to follow﹖A No one can stay on the same job for longB No prescription is effective in relieving stressC People have to get married somedayD You could be missing opportunities as well25. According to the passage people who have experienced ups and downs may become ____ .A nervous when faced with difficultiesB physically and mentally strainedC more capable of coping with adversityD indifferent toward what happens to themPassage TwoQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passageMost episodes of absent-mindedness—forgetting where you left something or wondering why you just entered a room-are caused by a simple lack of attention says Schacter. “You’re supposed to remember something but you haven’t encoded it deeply.”Encoding Schacter explains is a special way of paying attention to an event that has a major impact on recalling it later. Failure to encode properly can create annoying situations. If you put your mobile phone in a pocket for example and don’t pay attention to what you did because you’re involved in a conversation you’ll probably forget that the phone is in the jacket now hanging in your wardrobe (衣柜). “Your memory itself isn’t failing you” says Schacter. “Rather you didn’t give your memory system the information it needed.”Lack of interest can also lead to absent-mindedness. “A man who can recite sports statistics from 30 years ago” says Zelinski “may not remember to drop a letter in the mailbox.” Women have slightly better memories than men possibly because they pay more attention to their environment and memory relies on just that. Visual cues can help prevent absent-mindedness says Schacter. “But be sure the cue is clear and available” he cautions. If you wantto remember to take a medication (药物) with lunch put the pillbottle on the kitchen table—don’t leave it i n the medicine chestand write yourself a note that you keep in a pocket. Another common episode of absent-mindedness walking into a room and wondering why you’re there. Most likely you were thinking about something else. “Everyone does this from time to time” says Zelinski. The best thing to do is to return to where you were before entering the room and you’ll likely remember.26. Why does the author think that encoding properly is veryimportant﹖A It helps us understand our memory system betterB It enables us to recall something from our memoryC It expands our memory capacity considerablyD It slows down the process of losing our memory27. One possible reason why women have better memories than men isthat ____ .A they have a wider range of interestsB they are more reliant on the environmentC they have an unusual power of focusing their attentionD they are more interested in what’s happening around them28. A note in the pocket can hardly serve as a reminder because ____ .A it will easily get lostB it’s not clear enough for you to readC it’s out of your sightD it might get mixed up with other things29. What do we learn from the last paragraph﹖A If we focus our attention on one thing we might forget another.B Memory depends to a certain extent on the environment.C Repetition helps improve our memory.D If we keep forgetting things we’d better return to where we were.30. What is the passage mainly about﹖A The process of gradual memory loss.B The causes of absent-mindedness.C The impact of the environment on memory.D A way of encoding and recalling.Passage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passageIt is hard to track the blue whale the ocean’s largest creature which has almost been killed off by commercial whaling andis now listed as an endangered species. Attaching radio devices to itis difficult and visual sightings are too unreliable to give realinsight into its behavior. So biologists were delighted early this year when with the helpof the Navy they were able to track a particular blue whale for 43 days monitoring its sounds. This was possible because of the Navy’s formerly top-secret system of underwater listening devices spanning the oceans. Tracking whales is but one example of an exciting new world just opening to civilian scientists after the cold war as the Navy starts to share and partly uncover its global network of underwater listening system built over the decades to track the ships of potential enemies.Earth scientists announced at a news conference recently thatthey had used the system for closely monitoring a deep-sea volcanic eruption (爆发) for the first time and that they plan similar studies. Other scientists have proposed to use the network for tracking ocean currents and measuring changes in ocean and global temperatures. The speed of sound in water is roughly one mile a second-slower than through land but faster than through air. What is most important different layers of ocean water can act as channels for soundsfocusing them in the same way a stethoscope (听诊器) does when it carries faint noises from a patient’s chest to a doctor’s ear. This focusing is the main reason that even relatively weak sounds in the ocean especially low-frequency ones can often travel thousands of miles.31. The passage is chiefly about ____ .A an effort to protect an endangered marine species.B the civilian use of a military detection system.C the exposure of a U.S. Navy top-secret weapon.D a new way to look into the behavior of blue whales.32. The underwater listening system was originally designed ____ .A to trace and locate enemy vesselsB to monitor deep-sea volcanic eruptionsC to study the movement of ocean currentsD to replace the global radio communications network33. The deep-sea listening system makes use of ____ .A the sophisticated technology of focusing sounds under waterB the capability of sound to travel at high speedC the unique property of layers of ocean water in transmitting soundD low-frequency sounds travelling across different layers of water34. It can be inferred from the passage that____.A new radio devices should be developed for tracking the endangered blue whalesB blue whales are no longer endangered with the use of the new listening systemC opinions differ as to whether civilian scientists should be allowed to use military technologyD military technology has great potential in civilian use35. Which of the following is true about the U.S. Navy underwater listening network﹖A It is now partly accessible to civilian scientists.B It has been replaced by a more advanced system.C It became useless to the military after the cold war.D It is indispensable in protecting endangered species.Passage FourQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passageThe fitness movement that began in the late 1960s and early 1970s centered around aerobic exercise (有氧操). Millions of individuals became engaged in a variety of aerobic activities and literally thousands of health spas developed around the country to capitalize (获利) on this emerging interest in fitness particularly aerobic dancing for females. A number of fitness spas existed prior to this aerobic fitness movement even a national chain with spas in most major cities. However their focus was not on aerobics but rather on weight-training programs designed to develop muscularmass strength and endurance in their primarily male enthusiasts. These fitness spas did not seem to benefit financially from the aerobic fitness movement to better health since medical opinion suggested that weight-training programs offered few if any health benefits. In recent years however weight training has again become increasingly popular for males and for females. Many current programs focus not only on developing muscular strength and endurance but on aerobic fitness as well.Historically most physical-fitness tests have usually included measures of muscular strength and endurance not for health-related reasons but primarily because such fitness components have been related to performance in athletics. However in recent years evidence has shown that training programs designed primarily to improve muscular strength and endurance might also offer some health benefits as well. The American College of Sports Medicine now recommends that weight training be part of a total fitness programfor healthy Americans. Increased participation in such training is one of the specific physical activity and fitness objectives of Healthy People 2000 National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives.36. The word “spas”Line 3Para.1 most probably refers to ____.A sports activitiesC recreation centersB places for physical exerciseD athletic training programs.37. Early fitness spas were intended mainly for ____.A the promotion of aerobic exerciseB endurance and muscular developmentC the improvement of women's figuresD better performance in aerobic dancing38. What was the attitude of doctors towards weight training in health improvement﹖A Positive. C Negative.B Indifferent. D Cautious.39. People were given physical fitness tests in order to find out____ .A how well they could do in athleticsB what their health condition was likeC what kind of fitness center was suitable for themD whether they were fit for aerobic exercise40. Recent studies have suggested that weight training ____ .A has become an essential part of people’s life.B may well affect the health of the trainees.C will attract more people in the days to come.D contributes to health improvement as well.Part Ⅲ Vocabulary and Structure 20 minutesDirections There are 30 incomplete sentences in this part. A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents" principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.第11题Eagerly watching the child"s acquisition of new skills______.A.should be avoidedB.is universal among parentsC.sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD.will make him lose interest in learning new things第12题In the process of children"s learning new skills parents______.A.should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they readB.should not expect too much of themC.should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their ownD.should create as many learning opportunities as possible第13题The second paragraph mainly tells us that______.A.parents should be strict with their childrenB.parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the communityC.parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children aloneD.parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation第14题The word "precept"(Para. They fear that "assembly-line life" will lead to the disappearance of the pleasures of the more graceful and leisurely old French style.
