Not that they are cleverer than others, but that they are never willing to give up.This phenomenon teaches us a valuable lesson. In reality, no one can always avoid difficulties in life, but the results are quite different. The difference lies in people’s attitude. Some people choose to face hardships bravely. They are determined to reach their destination however many times they fail. In other words, they would be failures rather than quitters. Therefore, it’s just their perseverance that helps them make it in the end. Others may easily give in to whatever obstacle they meet, which can lead to nothing but failure. From my understanding, keeping on doesn’t necessarily mean success, but giving up absolutely means failure. If we can adopt such a positive attitude, we are bound to achieve more than we expected.

Do the Right ThingIn life, people feel most satisfied when they choose options that side with their most deeply held values. Here’s how to stay true to yours. If you hope to have your life shaped according to your ideals, you have to know what those ideals are. Perhaps begin sessions by identifying the concepts that are most important from a list: honesty, structure, family and so on. Those qualities are influenced by your parents, your culture and society as a whole, but you have to lake ownership of your own decisions.Almost all of these qualities are things most of us desire to hold dear. To determine which principles are more than just desires, reflect on situations that resonate(共鸣)with yourself.Identifying your values will guide you in the right direction, but a few strategies can help you follow through. Before you make a big decision, do something that will put you in high spirit exercise, socialize with friends, volunteer. Researchers theorize that such activities improve our mood, which promotes dopamine levels in certain areas of the brain, improving our cognitive abilities and helping us weigh different options.Trouble is, the toughest decisions often arrive at the most inconvenient limes. When you’re under force, ask a family member, a friend or. in certain cases, a professional for advice. They can provide advice that’s not slightly influenced by the work deadline, or leaky roof gradually weakening your mental energy.Of course, people make decisions that contradict their ideals all the time. There are lots of values we hold dear and they frequently come into conflict with one another. It’s not so much that people don't know what they warn; it’s that there ar e many things we desire, and we don’t always know how to compromise. While a single decision can seem like a tug-of-war between competing desires, broader life choices don't need to be a definitive either/or question. One who likes traveling worldwide might temporarily put off a grand trip to explore locations closer to home, or commit to setting aside time for vacation with their family every summer, no matter what else comes up.Surround yourself with people who, besides sharing your passion, can also prevent you from hesitating. A group can remind you, “Hey, we’re doing this because we love it.” If you’re still struggling, even after seeking out community support, there’s no shame in revising your core values. If you’re determined to take part in a charity program but spend the evening with friends instead, it maybe time lo accept that friendship is more important to you than volunteerism. Better yet, find opportunities to continue the charity program with your friends. You may learn that what you believed was a core priority actually has much more to do with living up to what your parents, co-workers or others expect. If your values agree with who you南京盐城As the concept of emotional intelligence (EI) has gone global, we’ve watched professionals fail as they try to improve their emotional intelligence because they either don’t know where to focus their efforts or they haven’t understood how to improve these skills on a practical level. In our work consulting with companies and coaching leaders, we have found that if you’re looking to develop particular EI strengths, it helps to consider areas for improvement others have identified along with the goals you want to achieve----and then to actively build habits in those areas rather than simply relying on understanding them conceptually. The first step is to get a sense of how your self-perception (how you see yourself) differs from your reputation (how others see you). This is especially true for the development of emotional intelligence because we can be blind to how we express and read the emotional components of our interactions. For example, most of us think that we’re good listeners, but very often that’s really not the case. Without this external reality check, it will be difficult for you to identify the ways that your actions affect your performance. Getting feedback from others can also provide proof of the necessity of shifting our behavior and motivation to do so.To give you the best sense of where the differences lie between your self-perception and reputation, you should use a 360-drgree feedback assessment that takes into account the multiple facets of EI. The key is to find one that guarantees confidentiality to those giving you feedback and that is focused on development and not on performance assessment.Secondly, when you get your feedback from an assessment, let that inform what you want to improve. But also consider what your goals are. When it comes to cultivating strengths in emotional intelligence, you’re at a huge disadvantage if you’re only interested because others said you should be. Your emotional intelligence is so tied up in hour sense of self that being intrinsically(内在的) motivated to make the effort matters more when changing longstanding habits than it does when simply learning a skill. That means the areas that you choose to actively work on should lie at the intersection of the feedback you’ve gotten and the areas that are most important to your own aspirations(渴望). Understanding the impacts of your current EI habits relative to your goals will keep you going over the long haul as you do the work of strengthening your emotional intelligence.Once you’ve determined which EI skills you want to focus on, identify specific actions that you’ll take. If you’re working on becoming a better listener, for example, you might decide thatwhen you’re conversing with someone you’ll take the time to pause, listen to what they have to say, and check that you understand before you reply. Keep it specific. You should also take every naturally occurring opportunity to practice the skill you’re developing, no matter how small.By starting to change your routine reactions, you’ll be well on your way to figuring out the old habits that aren’t serving you well and transforming them into new, improved ones that do.南通Life can be overwhelming (令人不知所措的).We want to do as much as we can, see the world, learn new things — and it can all get a bit too much. Sometimes we reach a point when we feel that we can no longer be interested in everything. We have to shut some of life out, and we don’t like that. We are living under the fal se assumption that to know anything worthwhile takes years of study, so we might as well forget it.But sometimes inside us rebels. We still want to learn new things and make new things. They don’t have to be big things. Coping with too big a challenge can be daunting (令人怯步的).The secret is to be a “micromaster” by perfecting lots and lots of small things — for a big payoff.A micromastery is a self-contained unit of doing, complete in itself, but connected to a greater field. You can perfect that single thing and move on to bigger things. A micromastery is the way we learn as kids. You never absorb all the fundamentals straight away 一you learn one cool thing, then another. Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has written about “flow” 一 a state in which time seems to be suspended because our involvement in what we’re doing is so great. A micromastery, because it is repeatable without being repetitious, has all the elements that allow us to enter a flow state, which produces great contentment. As we get older our default setting (默认设置)becomes “off” not “on”. We stop getting interested in new things because we haven’t got enough time or energy. This is an excuse but whocan blame us when we hear we need 10,000 hours to “master” something. Micromastery slices thro ugh all the excuses. You start with something so small and easy that it doesn’t impact on your life except positively. We envy the person who has a perfect French accent, who can roll kayak, or compose a poem that isn’t laughable, who can lay a brick wall that doesn’t fall down. These are regarded as hard things to learn which mean a greater mastery of the filed concerned. But with micromastery you can start with the test piece and then — and only then — do you go back upstream to learn anything more about the new world.Seeing the world in terms of micromasteries makes anything seem possible. Fancy bookbinding? Yoga? Tap dancing or tank driving? All have their micromasteries. It’s very liberating — you no longer have to feel trapped in your day job. You will start, in a small way, to get your life back from the idea that the world seems to push on us that we should do just one thing all our lives.天一等四校联考According to a biblical account found in The Book of Genesis, people once spoke the same language. Then, because those people banded together to build a tower in Babylon that glorified their own achievements, rather than those of their deity (神), God punished them. He ensured that mankind spoke different languages so that they would never be able to work together to dishonor God again. Was there once just a single language that all people could understand? Linguists don’t know; there’s just not enough information about the origins of language, and there are only theories about how our early ancestors formed their first words and sentences. Did early people imitate soundsthey heard in the environment? Did they babble until certain sounds took on meaning? We’ll probably never know, though linguists still study baby brains to determine if language or grammar comes naturally in our heads. One prominent theory about the development of the first languages relates to tools and resources. Teaching another person how to use tools requires a certain, agreed-upon vocabulary, as does the process of sharing and protecting resources like food and shelter. Small groups of people living in close quarters would therefore need to develop a way to understand each other, so they came up with a vocabulary and syntax that meant something to them. A group of people across the world, though, would probably need an entirely different vocabulary of words, so the languages would have developed differently in isolation. So these small groups of people, living in isolation from one another, agreed on names for their tools and food, and they came up with ways to describe how resources would be divided. But when another group migrated into the area, or came with different resources to trade, the groups had to find a way to merge (融合) their different vocabularies and communicate. Over time, that’s how languages have developed, and as some groups conquered others, that’s how some languages died out.Travel among groups who speak different languages has been difficult over history. In a global world, wouldn’t there be a benefit to speak the same language? Some groups have advocated that a universal language be adopted, but it would be difficult to find any group willing to give up their own language if only because so much culture and history becomes rooted in it over time. After all, the English would no sooner give up the language of Shakespeare than the Spanish would abandon the tongue of Cervantes. Attempts to create a universal second language have failed as well, but even if we could agree on a common language, it’s unlikely it would resemble itself 100 years from now. After all, thanks to the Internet’s influence, language has become a mix of emoticons and abbreviations like LOL. Languages simply evolve too rapidly to ever speak just one.3月联考Is loneliness a health epidemic? In recent decades, researchers have discovered that loneliness left untreated is not just psychically painful; it also can have serious medical consequences. Rigorous epidemiological studies have linked loneliness and social isolation to heart disease, cancer, depression, diabetes and suicide. Vivek Murthy, the former United States surgeon general, has written that loneliness and social isolation are “associated with a reduction in life span similar to that caused by smoking 15 cigarettes a day and even g reater than that associated with obesity.”But is loneliness, as many political officials and pundits are warning, a growing “health epidemic” (流行病)?I don’t believe so, nor do I believe it helps anyone to describe it that way. Social disconnection is a serious matter, yet if we set off a panic over its prevalence (流行) and impact, we’re less likely to deal with it properly.Anxiety about loneliness is a common feature of modern societies. Today, two major causes of loneliness seem possible. One is that societies throughout the world have embraced a culture of individualism. More people are living alone, and aging alone, than ever. Neoliberal (新自由主义的) social policies have turned workers into insecure free agents, and when jobs disappear, things fall apart fast. Labor unions, civic associations, neighborhood organizations, religious groups and other traditional sources of social solidarity are in steady decline. Increasingly, we all feel that we’re on our own.The other possible cause is the rise of communication technology, including smartphones, social media and the internet. A decade ago, companies like Facebook, Apple and Google promised that their products would help create meaningful relationships and communities. Instead, we’ve used the media system to deepen existing divisions, at both the individual and group levels. We may have thousands of “friends” and “followers” on Facebook and Instagram, but when it comes to human relationships, it turns out there’s no substitute for building them the o ld-fashioned way, in person. In light of these two trends, it’s easy to believe we’re experiencing an “epidemic” of loneliness and isolation. Surprisingly, though, the best data do not actually show a boom in either loneliness or social isolation. Yet the research tells us something more specific. In places like the United States and Britain, it’s the poor, unemployed, displaced (无家可归的) and migrant populations that are suffering most from loneliness and isolation. Their lives are unstable, and so are their relationships. When they get lonely, they are the least able to get adequate social or medical support.参考答案苏锡常镇71. match 72. shape 73. factors 74. determining/deciding 75. mood 76. In other words, acquiring skills takes time and effort. But how exactly does one go about learninga complex subject such as tennis, calculus, or even how to play the violin? An ageold answer is: practice one skill at a time. A beginning pianist might rehearse scales(音阶) before chords(和弦). A young tennis player practices the forehand before the backhand. Learning researchers call this "blocking",and because it is common and easy to schedule, blocking is dominant in schools, training programs, and other settings. However another strategy promises improved results. Enter "interleaving",a largely unheardof technique that is catching the attention of cognitive(认知) psychologists and neuroscientists. Blocking involves practicing one skill at a time before the next (for example, "skill A" before "skill B" and so on,forming the pattern "AAABBBCCC"), while in interleaving one mixes practice on several related skills together (forming for example the pattern "ABCABCABC"). Over the past four decades, a small but growing body of research has found that interleaving often outperforms blocking for a variety of subjects, including sports and category learning. Yet there have been almost no studies of the technique in unplanned, real world settings﹣until recently. New research in schools finds that interleaving produces dramatic and longlasting benefits for an essential skill: math. Not only does this finding have the potential to transform how math is taught, it may also change how people learn more generally. Researches are now working to understand why interleaving produces such impressive results. One important explanation is that it improves the brain's ability to tell apart between concepts. With blocking, once you know what solution to use, or movement to do, the hard part is over. With interleaving, each practice attempt is different from the last, so rote(死记硬背) responses don't work. Instead, your brain must continuously focus on searching for different solutions. That process can improve your ability to learn critical features of skills and concepts, which then better enables you to select and produce the correct response.A second explanation is that interleaving strengthens memory associations. With blocking, a single strategy, temporarily held in shortterm memory, is sufficient. That's not the case with interleaving﹣the correctsolution changes from one practice attempt to the next. As a result, your brain is continually engaged at regaining different responses and bringing them into shortterm memory. Repeating that process can strengthen neural connections between different tasks and correct responses, which improves learning. Both of these accounts imply that increased effort during training, either to discriminate correct responses or to strengthen them,is needed when interleaving is used. This corresponds to a potential drawback of the technique, namely that the learning process often feels more gradual and difficult in the beginning. However, that added effort can have better, longerlasting results.(1)What can we learn from the new strategy of "interleaving"?A. Studying related skills together has many impressive results.B. Learning relevant skills together contributes to people mastering skills quickly.C. Focusing on different skills at a time saves people time and efforts in the beginning.D. Mixing up skills distracts people's attention, thus lessening efficiency.(2)Why does interleaving produce impressive results?A. It can be scheduled easily.B. It focuses on rote responses.C. It is temporarily held in shortterm memory.D. It enables you to learn critical features of skills and concepts.(3)What does the passage mainly talk about?A.Blocking involves practicing one skill at a time before the next.B.Correct solution often changes from one practice attempt to the next.C.Practising one skill at a time plays an important role in learning a complex subject.D.Studying related skills or concepts together is an effective way to train your brain.29.(8分)The latest IPCC report does not mince words(直言不讳地) about the stateof our planet: we must act now to achieve global change at a scale that has "no documented historical precedent(先例)" in order to avoid the climate disaster that would result from a 2 degree C rise in average global temperature. Climate change already affects the world's most helpless people including poor rural communities that depend on the land for their livings and coastal communities. Indeed, we have already seen the clear asymmetry(不对称) of suffering resulting from extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, floods, droughts, wildfires and more.So far, advocates and politicians have tended to focus on reducing fossil fuel(矿物燃料) consumption through technology and/or policy, such as a sharp carbon tax, as climate solutions. These proposals are, of course, essential to reducing manmade carbon emissions(排放)﹣71 percent of which are produced by just 100 fossil fuel companies.Yet the international focus on fossil fuels has overshadowed(使……显得不重要) the most powerful and costefficient carboncapture technology the world has yet seen: forests. Recent scientific research confirms that forests and other "natural climate solutions" are absolutely essential in reducing climate change. In fact, natural climate solutions can help us achieve 37 percent of our climate target, even though they currently receive only 2.5 percent of public climate financing.Forests' power to store carbon dioxide through the simple process of tree growth is staggering:one tree can even store an average of about 48 pounds of carbon dioxide in one year. Recent research show undamaged forests are capable of storing the same amount of the carbon dioxide emissions of entire countries such as Peru and Colombia. For this reason, policy makers and business leaders must create and strengthen ambitious policies to prevent deforestation, and support the sustainable management of standing forests in the fight against climate change. Protecting the world's forests ensures they can continue to provide essential functions aside from climate stability, including producing oxygen, filtering water and supporting biodiversity. Not only do all the world's people depend on forests to provide clean air, clean water, oxygen, and medicines, but 1.6 billion people rely on them directly for their livelihoods.(1)According to the passage, climate change.A. will surely achieve at a scale that is more serious than ever before B. will only affect people living in the poorest rural regionsC. is likely to lead to more frequent extreme weather eventsD. is entirely determined by fossil fuel consumption(2)What's the finding of the new research?A. Reducing fossil fuels is the most powerful and costefficient technology.B. Forests are vital to reducing climate change due to their storage power.C. Most of our climate targets can be accomplished with the help of natural climate solutions.D. Natural climate solutions have proved less efficient than conventional solutions.(3)The underlined word "staggering" in Paragraph 4 means.A.astonishingB. speedingC. embarrassingD. shrinking(4)What's the author's purpose of writing this article?A. To compare two different approaches to dealing with climate change.B. To argue against the view that focus on fossil fuels reduction counts.C. To urge scientists to do more research into natural climate solutions.D. To point out forests are the most powerful weapon for fighting climate change.30.(12分)No one knew Prince Edward Street as well as Pierre Dupin. He had delivered milk to the families on the street for thirty years. For the past fifteen yearsa large white horse named Joseph pulled his milk wagon. Joseph was a gentle horsewith beautiful spirit shining out of its eyes, so Pierre named him after SaintJoseph.Every morning at five, Pierre arrived at the milk company's stables to find Joseph waiting for him, Pierre would call, "Good morning, my old friend.",as he climbed into his seat, while Joseph turned his head toward the driver. And the two would go proudly down the street. Without any order from Pierre, the wagon would roll down three streets. Then it turned right for two streets, before turning left to Saint Catherine Street. The horse finally stopped at the first house on Prince Edward Street. There, Joseph would wait perhaps thirty seconds for Pierre to get down off his seat and put a bottle of milk at the front door. Pierre knew every one of the forty families that got milk. The cooks knew that Pierre could not read or write; so, instead of leaving orders in an empty milk bottle, they simply sang out if they needed an extra bottle.Pierre also had a wonderful memory. When he arrived at the stable he always remembered to tell Jacques, the foreman(领班) of the stables, "The Pacquins took an extra bottle this morning; the Lemoines bought a pint of cream …" Most of the drivers had to make out the weekly bills and collect the money. But Jacques, liking Pierre, never asked him to do this. One day the president of the milk company came to inspect the early morning milk deliveries.Jacques pointed to Pierre and said:"See how the horse listens and how he turns his head toward Pierre? See the look in that horse's eyes? You know, I think those two share a secret. I have often felt it. He is getting old. Maybe he ought to be given a rest, and a small pension.""But of course," the president laughed. "He has been on this job now for thirty years. All who know him love him. Tell him it is time he rested. He will get his pay every week as before."But Pierre refused to leave his job. He said his life would be nothing if he could not drive Joseph every day. "We are two old men," he said to Jacques. "Let us wear out together. When Joseph is ready to leave, then I too will do so." Then one cold morning Jacques had terrible news for Pierre. Jacques said,"Pierre, your horse, Joseph, didn't wake up. He was very old, Pierre." Jacquessaid softly. "He is over in his stall, looking very peaceful. Go over and see him." Pierre took one step forward, then turned. "No …no …I cannot see Joseph again. You …, you don't understand, Jacques."For years Pierre had worn a large heavy cap that came down low over his eyes.It kept out the bitter cold wind. Now,Jacques looked into Pierre's eyes and he saw something that shocked him. He saw a dead, lifeless look in them."Take the day off, Pierre," Jacques said. Pierre walked to the corner and stepped into the street. There was a warning shout from the driver of a big truck …there was the screech(尖锐的刹车声) of rubber tires as the truck tried to stop. But Pierre heard nothing.Five minutes later a doctor said, "He's dead …, killed instantly.""I couldn't help it," the truck driver said. "He walked in front of my truck. He never saw it, I guess. Why, he walked as though he were blind." The doctor bent down. "Blind?Of course, this man has been blind for five years." He turned to Jacques, "Didn't you know he was blind?""No …no …" Jacques said softly. "None of us knew. Only one …only one knew﹣a friend of his, named Joseph …It was a secret, I think, just between those two."(1)According to the first three paragraphs, we can know that.A. Joseph was named after an unknown manB. Pierre knew all the small streets in the city better than anyone else C. Joseph managed to deliver milk by itself even without Pierre's company D. Pierre and Joseph seemed to understand each other and cooperated very well (2)Why did Pierre refuse to leave his job?A. He thought he was not old enough to retire.B. The pension was too small to support his life.C. He was unwilling to be separated from Joseph.D. He wanted to get promoted to foreman.(3)Which of the following can best describe Pierre?A. wellreceived and trustworthyB. cruel and greedyC. sensitive and humorousD. creative and enthusiastic(4)The underlined sentences imply that.A. Jacques had known the fact that Pierre was blind for a long timeB. the death of Joseph drove Pierre to despair of lifeC. Pierre wanted to commit suicide because of his blindnessD. Jacques was afraid to see Pierre's empty eyes(5)Which of the following does NOT indicate Pierre's blindness?A. Pierre knew every one of the forty families that got milk.B. For years Pierre had worn a large heavy cap that came down low over his eyes.(6)What is the best title for the passage?A. A caring friendB. A caring milk companyC. A secret of a horseD. A secret for two第四部分任务型阅读(满分15分)请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词.31.(15分)Decoding the young brainThere was a funny experiment to see how a young child would answer a specific question compared to an adult. After the adult had spent some time speaking with the child, he asked the child, "What do you think about me?" The child answered,"You talk too much." When the adult performed the same experiment with another adult, the reply to the same question was, "I think you're a very interesting person." Even if the adult felt the same way as the child, his brain allowed him to take a moment, consider the question, and come up with an answer. Hecould have been annoyed, but his answer didn't reflect it because he was being polite. The secret lies in the science of the developing brain. The child's honest answer was reflected in the fact that his brain wasn't equipped to filter(过滤) information before answering the question. As a result, he was honest, but he said something that may have been hurtful. However, the child did not intentionally hurt the adult; it's just the way his brain works. As a child grows into adolescence and then into adulthood, that changes. The human brain is made up of billions of neurons(神经元). In order for our body to execute a command, like getting up from a chair and walking to the other room, the neurons in the brain have to communicate with each other. They also help us employ our senses like taste and touch and help us remember things. When the neurons send messages, perhaps one sensation(感觉) the person feels is excitement about eating a cookie because it is so delicious. Later,if that person smells a cookie or hears someone talking about a cookie, it can spark the electrical signals that call up the memory of eating the delicious cookie. In an adult, he or she may remember that eating too many cookies can have consequences, like weight gain. But because the younger brain is more impulsive(冲动的), the desire to feel the pleasure of the sweet treat outweighs the consequences. That is because when a child is young, his brain is "wired" in such a way that he seeks pleasure and is more willing to take risks than an adult. This affects his decisionmaking process and it is why younger people tend to be more impulsive. Sometimes parents have to tell their children over and over again before the child remembers that something is dangerous or risky. How many times have we heard a parent say, "I tell her this all the time, but she never listens!"To conclude, what we know about the young brain is that children are more likely than adults to be impulsive. It isn't always necessarily because they are being naughty; it may very well be because of their brains.
