My mother used to sit by my side, and explain each paragraph of each school reading assignment to me because I didn’t understand what I was reading. She would have to read each paragraph tome, and then after each paragraph, she summarized what we just read.In class, I tried to hide the fact that I could’t read. My teachers gave us the last 10 minutes of class to start our reading homework, and I would sit there for the last ten minutes of class starting at the page, pretending I was reading it—I remember a terrible feeling of not wanting to get in trouble for not being able to comprehend. I had to wait until I got home so my mother could explain it to me. How did I ever get into Cornell University? By eighth grade I started understanding a little on my own, but I was reading at an incredibly slow rate. In eighth grade, I got hold of all the speed reading books I could get my hands on. I read them all very slowly at the time. I even went out and took a course on speed reading. Then I developed my own system which was easier and produced quicker results. I started practicing these techniques every day, and as I started to read faster, my understanding increased. I found that I stopped daydreaming and thinking about other things while I was reading, and started getting the larger meaning. I was reading faster and comprehending better.I found that when you read slowly, word by word, you get lost in the world, lose the bigger picture, and your comprehension drops. When you read faster, your concentration actually increases and your comprehension goes up because instead of getting lost in the words, you see the overall picture.1 The main difficulty and writer had in reading in her 7th grade was that _____a.she often forget her school reading assignmentsb.she had difficulty reading with comprehensionc.she had a poor vocabulary and very bad grammard.she always looked elsewhere when asked to read2The writer would pretend to be reading in the last 10 minutes of class because______a.she was afraid of being found outb.the reading class was terriblec.she had to do what others were doingd.her mother told her to do so3The writer’s reading ability improved a great deal mainly because _____a.she entered Cornell Universityb.she took a course on speed readingc.her mother managed to help her outd.she developed her own way of reading4From her own experience, the writer found that ________a.one’s comprehension drops if one reads too slowlyb.in order to understand better, one has to read slowlyc.one tends to neglect the detailed information if one reads fastd.many people read fast in order to save time5After reading the passage, we can conclude that the writer wrote the passage in order to_______a.convince the readers of the importance of higher educationb.tell a story in honor of her motherc.give a detailed description of different reading skillsd.illustrate the necessity of fast reading1-5 b a d a dPassage 2If we were asked exactly what were doing a year ago, we should probably have to say that we could not remember. But if we had kept a book and had written in it an account of what we did each day, we should be able give an answer to the question. It is the same in history. Many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them. Sometimes men did keep a record of the most important happenings in their country, but often it was destroyed by fire or in a war. Sometimes there was never any written record at all because the people of that time and place did not know how to write. For example, we know a good deal about the people who lived in China 4,000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa, because they had not learned to write.Sometimes, of course, even if the people cannot write, they may know something of the past. They have heard about if from older people, and often songs and dances and stories have been made about the most important happenings, and these have been sung and acted and told for many generations. For most people are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past. This we may call ‘remembered history’. Some of it has now been written down. It is not so exact or so valuable to us as written history is, because words are much more easily changed when used again and again in speech than when copied inwriting. But where there are no written records, such spoken stories are often very helpful.6. Which of the following ideas is not suggested in the passage?a.“Remembered history”, compared with written history, is less reliable.b.Written records of the past play the most important role in our learning of the human history.c.A written account of our daily activities helps us to be able to answer many questionsd.Where there are no written records, there is no history7. We know very little about the central Africa 200 years ago because ______a.there was nothing worth being written down at that timeb.the people there ignored the importance of keeping a recordc.the written records were perhaps destroyed by a fired.the people there did not know how to write8. “Remembered history” refers to________a.history based on a person’s imaginationb.stories of important happenings passed down from mouth to mouthc.songs and dances about the most important eventsd.both b and c9. “Remembered history” is regarded as valuable only when ______a. it is written downb. no written account is availablec. it proves to be trued. people are interested in it10. The passage suggests that we could have learned much more about our past than we do now if the ancient people had ______a.kept a written record of every past eventb.not burnt their written records in warsc.told exact stories of the most important happeningsd.made more songs and dances6-10 d d d b aPassage 3Do you have bright ideas? Ideas for inventions that change society or, at least, make life easier for somebody? Perhaps we all do sometimes, but we don’t often make the idea a reality. Recently, in Britain, there was a competition called British Designers for Tomorrow. The competition encouraged young people to carry out their bright ideas. There were two groups in the contest: Group One was for schoolchildren under 116; Group Two was for schoolchildren over 16. And there were eleven prize-winners altogether.Nei Hunt, one of the prize-winner, was called “Sunshine Superman” by one newspaper writing about his design. It’s important, when people study the weather, to be able to record sunshine accurately. We need to know how many hours of sunshine we have and how strong it is. Most sunshine recorders only record direct sunlight. Nei’s is more accurate and this is very important for research into ways of using solar power. With his prize of £100, Nei plans to carry on inventing. You can do so much with animation (动画⽚). Look at Simon West’s idea for animated road signs. He uses pictures with appear to move as you go nearer to or farther from them. This isn’t a new idea. But it is new to use these pictures on road signs. “We found that people were more likely to see moving signs,” said Simon. So now, you can really see rocks falling, trains moving, horses galloping or a car falling over the edge of cliff. Quite a warning! The ideas in the competition were so inventive that we are surprised that British industry doesn’t ask more schoolchildren for suggestions. Perhaps this will be the start of “pupil power”!11.______was carried out recently in Britain.a. A c o m p e t i t i o n a m o n g s c h o o l c h i l d r e n b r > b . Woman have more problems than men in old age. First of all, they have less money—or no money at all — and because of this, they often feel they get less respect , even at home. Quite a large number have no pension(退休费) because they have never worked outside the home, and thirty-eight percent are supported mainly by their husbands or children. Second, a larger number of old women than old men become window(single women). Men are normally older than the women they marry, and women generally live longer than men. The remarriage among older windows is lower than that among widows(single men). Statistics (统计) from 1990 in Shanghai show only 52 percent of elderly women with husbands still living, compared to(与---相比)82 percent of men.Because of lower incomes and the difficulty of remarriage, many elderly women wholive alone, are poor and have almost no social life. Even an old couple lives with children, it is the woman who ends up doing the work around the house. She cleans the rooms, prepares meals, and takes care of the family. Some 75 percent of them carry out such heavy physical tasks as buying and carrying grain, coal and other supplies for the home. How to improve the quality of life of women in their later years is a question that needs to be dealt with by all the society.

Passage OneYou remember things every day, but how do you do it? You find a telephone number in the phone book, dial it and then forget it. This is your short-term memory. It lasts less than 30 seconds. However you don’t look in the phone book for your best friend’s number. You know it. This is a long-term memory. Your long-term memory has everything you remember. Why do you forget something? What is the reason? You did not learn it in the beginning. This is the major reason for forgetting. But you can remember better. Here are some ideas.1. Move information from your short-term memory to your long-term memory. Practice the information. Spend time on it.2. Be sure that you understand the information.3. Do only one thing at a time. Study in a quiet place. You can’t listen to music and memorize at the same time.4. Try to connect the new information with something you already know.5. Divide the information into parts. Do not have more than seven parts. Learn one part and stop for a few minutes. Don’t try to learn all parts at the same time.6. Make a picture in your mind. For example, when you learn the word SOFA, make a picture in your mind of this furniture. Remember what it looks like.7. Try to relax when you study. Enjoy it.54.This passage mainly tells us how to ______.A)keep short-term memoryB)remember telephone numbersC)remember things betterD)practice information55.You often forget a telephone number quickly because it is only kept in ______.A)your long-term memoryB)your mid-term memoryC)your fresh memoryD)your short-term memory56.Forgetting easily happens because of ______.A)failing to understand the information in the beginningB)failing to practice the information in the beginningC)spending much time on learningD)dividing the information into parts57.To make sure that your long-term memory keeps what you remember, you need _____. The rivers which had brought down the soil were steep near the mountains, but near the coast they were wide and rolling, deep enough for the small boats of the time to sail for miles. It was far enough south for the summers to be hot, so that the growing season lasted from six month in Maryland to about nice in South Carolina. If you add these ideal farming conditions to the early discovery of a New World crop which was always in demand in the Old world, you will readily understand why the Southern Colonies became a farming group.Tobacco! This was the breath of life in Virginia, the oldest of the Southern Colonies. Men talked, thought, and bought in tobacco. It was a farming country, and other crop were also grown, but while the Southerner might have competition in the production of fruits and grains(wheat and rice and barley大麦),in tobacco he was a master. Tobacco! It was a magic word. Everything revolved around its production and it had a tremendous effect upon life in the South.59.“A New world crop” in the last sentence of the 1st paragraph most probably refers to_____A)wheat B)rice C)tobacco D)barley60. A few minutes before six o’clock, they decided to leave. They walked to their car, and got in. They expected a quiet, peaceful ride home. Mr. Lestar was about to start the car when a gun-man jumped up from the back seat. “Drive me to Paris!” he demanded.“All right,”Mr. Lestar replied. “I’ll drive you anywhere you want to go. But first let my wife out of the car.”After Jean was safely out of the car, Mr. Lestar started the motor slowly, but his mind was racing. Unarmed and 81 years old, he knew he needed help. Where were the police? “Just my luck,”he thought. “If I were speeding, there would be a police car on every corner.” Then the car sped forward and Mr. Lestar began driving like a madman, running red lights, and driving the wrong way on one-way streets but not one police officer saw him.Obviously, Mr. Lestar’s plan was not working. He got a new plan as he remembered that Lille Police Station was nearby. “All right,” he thought. “If I can’t bring the pol ice to my car, I’ll bring my car to the police.” Then he drove his car crashing through the doors and stopped in the courtyard of the police station. Mr. Lestar yelled, “Help!” Officers from the police station came running and quickly held the man.64.When Mr. Lestar saw a man pointing a gun at him, his first response was that________. The coast is very varied, with perhaps the best parts in the south-west of England and in the west of Scotland. The coast of Devon and Cornwall, in the south-west, is much indented(向内陆凹进),with many sheltered bays and fine rough points of land extending out into the sea. With so large a population on so small an island the best parts of the coast are inevitably rather crowded during the summer ,but much of Devon and Cornwall is still unspoiled, with many picturesque(风景如画的)fishing villages. The other parts of the coast are less dramatic, being partly flat and partly steep. In the parts nearest to great centers of population big seaside-resort(海滨胜地) towns have grown up . Four of these--Brighton, Bournemouth and Southend in the south, and Blackpool in the north-west--have become important towns themselves, with more than 150,000 permanent residents each, and there are other big seaside towns whose inhabitants include many retired people .Some of these places are remarkable for the great number of visitors they receive, some to stay for a week or a fortnight ,some to spend a few hours on the before returning home in the evening.69. It will take one___to travel to any place of Great Britain by car from any part of the coast.A) a week B) a fortnightC) 3 hours' less D) more than 3 hours70.According to the first paragraph, it is more possible for a visitor to find a scenicspot along the coast of England in____.A) the north-east B) the south-westC) the north-west D) the south-east71.Some parts of the coast in Great Britain are crowded during the summer probably because they___.A) have a great number of inhabitants B) attract a large number of visitorsC) are suitable for fishing D) extended out into the sea72.The coast of Devon and Cornwall can be best described as___.A) flat all the way to the sea B) steep with bare rocky hillsC) sheltered all the year round D) dramatic with beautiful scenery73.How long do the visitors stay in a seaside resort?A)From several hours to two weeks B) Usually less than a dayC) From a few days to two months D) Seldom more than a weekTranslation from English into ChinesePart IV: Translation (10%)in this part, there are four items which you should translate into Chinese ,each item consisting of one sentence .Some of these sentences are taken from the reading passages you have just read in Part Ⅲof the Test Paper .You are allowed 15 minutes to do the translation.
