To begin with, the following definition should be helpful: science fiction is a literary sub-class which requires a change (for human beings) from conditions as we know them and follow the implications of these changes to a conclusion. Although this definition will necessarily be modified, and expanded, and probably changed, in the course of this exploration, it conveys much of the basic groundwork and provides a point of departure. The first point—that science fiction is a literary sub-class—is a very important one, but one which is often overlooked or ignored in most discussions of science fiction. Specially, science fiction is a sub-class of prose fiction, for nearlyevery piece of science fiction is either a short story or a novel. There are only a few dramas which could be called science fiction, with Karel Capek’s RUR (Rossum’s Universal Robots) being the only one that is well known; the body of poetry that might be labeled science fiction is only slightly larger. To say that science fiction is a sub-class of prose fiction is to say that it has all the basic characteristics and serves the same basic function in much the same way as prose fiction in general—that is, it shares a great deal with all other novels and short stories.Everything that can be said about prose fiction, in general, applies to science fiction. Every piece of science fiction, whether short or novel, must have a narrator, a story, a plot, a setting, characters, language, and theme. And like any prose, the themes of science fiction are concerned with interpreting man’s nature and experience in relation to the world around him. Themes in science fiction are constructed and presented in exactly the same ways that themesare dealt with in any other kind of fiction. They are the result of a particular combination of narrator, story, plot, character, setting, and language. In short, the reasons for reading and enjoying science fiction, and the ways of studying and analyzing it are basically the same they would be for any other story or novel.1. Science fiction is called a literary sub-class because it .A) has limits of its ownB) cannot be made into a dramatic presentationC) is not important enough to be a literary formD) shares characteristics with other types of prose fiction2 Which of the following does NOT usually contribute to the theme in a piece of science fiction?A) Narrator. B) Setting. C) Rhyme. D) Plot.3. An appropriate title for the passage would be .A) On the Dramatic Features of Science FictionB) Toward a Definition of Science FictionC) Science Fiction vs Prose FictionD) The Themes of Prose Fiction4. The author’s definition suggests that all science fiction deals with .A) the unfamiliar or unusual conditionsB) the same topics addressed by novels and short storiesC) Karel Cape’s well-known hypothesisD) the conflict between science and fiction5. According to the passage, which of the following conclusions is true?A) Science fiction attracts us in much the same way a story or novel does.B) It is not possible to define science fiction in a clear way.C) Many people tried in vain to explain what science fiction is.D) Very often science fiction appears in such literary forms as drama and poetry.1小题>、【正确答案】:C2小题>、【正确答案】:C3小题>、【正确答案】:B4小题>、【正确答案】:B5小题>、【正确答案】:A【参考解析】:无第3题:The American economic system is organized around a basically private enterprise, market-oriented economy in which consumers largely determine what shall be produced by spending their money in the marketplace for those goods and services that they want most. Private businessmen, striving to make profits, produce these goods and services in competition with other businessmen; and the profit motive, operating under competitive pressures, largely determines how these goods and services are produced. Thus, in the American economicsystem, it is the demand of individual consumers, coupled with the desire of businessmen to maximize profits and the desire of individuals to maximize their incomes, that together determine what shall be produced and how resources are used to produce it.An important factor of a market-oriented economy is the mechanism by which consumer demands can be expressed and responded to by producers. In the American economy, this mechanism is provided by a price system, a process in which prices rise and fall-producers, which in turn will lower the price and permit more consumers to buy the product. Thus, price is the regulating mechanism in the American economic system. The important factor in a private enterprise economy is that individuals are allowed to own productive resources (private property), and they are permitted to hire labor, gain control over natural resources, and produce goods and services for sale at a profit. In the Americaneconomy, the concept of private property embraces not only the ownership of productive resources but also certain rights, including the right to determine the price of a product or to make a free contract with another private individual.1. What can we learn from the first paragraph?A) Americans are never satisfied with their incomes.B) Americans tend to overstate their incomes.C) Americans want to have their incomes increased.D) Americans want to increase the purchasing power of their incomes.2. According to the passage, a private enterprise economy is characterized by .A) private property and rights concerned C)ownership of productive resourcesB) manpower and natural resources controlD)free contracts and prices4. The passage is mainly about .A) how American goods are producedB)how American consumers buy their goodsC) how American economic system worksD)how American businessmen make their profits5. Go to the seaside, enjoy beautiful sunshine and softbreezes and let your mind and body both relax; hide away in a small town, amble on winding pebble tracks and melt into the romantic ambiance; or take up your backpack, go mountaineering, stretch your body and smell the fresh air…They all sound wonderful. But changing environments can pose threats to delicate skin. How can you protect yourself and stay beautiful through seven days of traveling? Here are some helpful suggestions. If you’re going to the seaside:Typical resort: SanyaTypical weather: 24-31℃with strong ultraviolet sunrays and fresh air.Warm sunshine, fresh sea breezes, and moist air make the seaside an agreeable haven from Beijing’s dust. But excessive sun exposure can easily darken your skin, and of course most Chinese girls prefer fair skin. To prepare for a pleasing and beautiful sojourn (逗留) at the seaside take note of following:1. Night time skin careEven if you’ve managed to block the sun in the daytime, give your skin a soothing rehabilitative (使复原的) treatment in the evening. Cool your glowing skin with a product like La Mer’s newly released The Concentrate (50ml/RMB 3,700).2. Shine in your bikini.Tips1. Whitening is as important as wearing sunscreen. For dry skins, moisturizing products are a must. Laneige Water Sleeping Pack (RMB 150) is a good choice.2. For sensitive skins, Nuskin Aloe Vera Gel complements sun block creams. Washing your face with lemonade stops skin from darkening and is refreshing.3. Never use body sun block creams on your face. Use special facial sun block creams. For drier skins, Chanel UV Essential SPF45 (RMB 450) is nice, but Shu Uemura UV under Base DF (RMB 350) is much fresher. If you’re going to a small town:Typical resorts: Lijiang, Yunnan; Zhouzhuang, Jiangsu; Phoenix, ZhejiangTypical weather: 11-25℃with a lot of ultraviolet radiationAs depicted in Teresa Teng’s popular song Xiaocheng Gushi (Small Town Romances), small-secluded charming Chinese towns are the scene of many romances. Pebble tracks, winding lanes and ancient low villas make romantic backdrop for lovers wandering hand-in-hand. To prepare for a romantic and sweet stay in a small town, take note of the following:1. Go easy on the make up! To match your light-hearted mood we recommend the minimum of make-up. Basic skin care to keep your face healthy and glowing is enough.2. Wear flirtatious (俏皮的) colors for special nights.Liquid foundation in heavy glass bottles and powdered blush or eye shadow is not easy to carry. So we recommend sun-blocking pressed powder, two-in-one brow pencil and eye liners, and products that can be used on both lips and cheeks.3. Make-up removal.Remember to remove sun block creams at night. Try a moisturizing and relaxing mask, and we promise you a renewed glowing complexion the next day.Recommended skin care products1. SPF15/PA+sun block face cream. Its small size makes Freeplus UV Day Protector (RMB 190, sun block and moisturizer) a good choice.2. A multi-functional cosmetic case. Bobbi Brow’ns h and-sized palettes (RMB 380), including a foundation stick, creamy concealer, corrector, and sheer finish pressed powder are convenient.3. Clear foundation. Maybelline Mousse White Stay (RMB 89) the mousse-like texture makes this foundation light, breathable, and easy to carry.4. Make up remover. Lancome’s mildGentle Clarifying and Cleaning Fluid (small set) is perfect for traveling and it does a good job of removing all make-up thoroughly.Tips1. Apart from your daily skin care routine, traveling girls may also need protective lip cream, mascara (Maybelline is a good cheap choice), and fragrance (Try Anna Sui’s fresh Secret Wish Eau de Toilette).2. For lazy girls, base creams are especially useful. Wearing just a base foundation cream is enough and saves the trouble of constantly reapplying foundation at romantic moments. Others may try creamy concealers and pressed powers. Adding blush (Watsons small tubes of blush are cheap/RMB20-30 and works well) will give a healthy glow.If you’re going mountaineering:Typical resorts: Huashan, Shanxi; Huangshan, Anhui; Shennongjia, Sichuan Typical weather: 10-20℃, a high level of ultraviolet radiation and dry air.Boys often complain that mountaineering girls with their disheveled (凌乱的) hair and no make up don’t look attractive. In response to this, we recommend you use absolutely no make up except for basic skin care. But looking beautiful without the aid of make up isn’t easy! With all your mountaineering equipment in your backpack, there isn’t m uch room for skin care products. The key is to choose the most important ones only, such as the following:1. Moisturizing products.Moisturizing and hydrating creams and masks help you become both sporty and ladylike.2. Sun block products.Even though the sunshine is usually not too strong in the mountains, you should take care not to be burned by ultraviolet radiation. Fresh breathable SPF20-30 sun block products are recommended. At the seashore, your body is more in the spotlight than your face. To become a bikini beauty, you need to take care of every inch of your skin. Exfoliate with a fine-grained scrub, which will not only let your exposed skin shine, but also acts as a deep cleanser to help prevent skin from darkening and roughening after too much sun and salt water.3. Control excess oil.Never try to control oil with foundation that will clog pores (阻塞毛孔) when combined with sun block cream. Gentle oil-control products do a better job.4. Hair care.Beautiful girls never use free hotel shampoos, they carry their own moisturizing restoring hair care products. Wash your face and hair with fresh water after swimming to get rid of salty residue (残余,滤渣), and remember to protect your hair from too much sun exposure.Recommended skin care products1. SPF30/PA++sunscreen products. HR Premium SPF40/PA++(RMB 620) protects your skin from ultraviolet rays.2. Soothing, moisturizing, and after-sun rehabilitating products. Olay Intensive Nourishing Emulsion (RMB 120) has natural hot spring microelements to give rapid relief to burned skin.3. Gentle exfoliating scrubs.4. Easy to carry oil-control products.5. Moisturizing shampoo and hair protection products.3. Facial cleaning pads.Easy to carry cleaning pads help you stay fresh and clean at all times.4. Soothing creams.Compound soothing creams can be applied onto the skin directly to reduce inflammation and help you relax.5. Lip conditioner and hand cream to prevent dryness caused by wind.Tips1. Make sure you have enough moisturizing skin care products, including a cleanser, cream, lotion and mask, even at the expense of make up products.2. Secret recipe mask: While your boyfriend is away finding wood for the fire, apply a mashed banana to your face and leave for over ten minutes. Although tiny allergic symptoms (red swollen patches) may appear right after you rinse (冲洗掉, 漂净) off the mask, your face will be dazzling after a sound sleep.1. Tips of how to stay beautiful through traveling are provided in the passage.2. Exfoliate with a fine-grained scrub can help prevent skin from darkening.3. Beautiful girls never use free hotel toothbrush.4. Travelers had better not use special facial sun block creams on body.5. Typical resorts to a small town are Lijiang, Yunnan; Zhouzhuang and Sichuan.6. If you’re going to Shanxi, you are recommended to use basic skin care.7. Five tips are offered before you’re going mountaineering.8. Typical temperature for going mountaineering is .9. The name of the popular song mentioned in the passage is .10. Section B Directions There are 2 passages in this section, each passage is followed by some question or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A B C D.You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. Passage one Question 57 to 61 based on the following passage. If you are a male and you are reading this, congratulations: you are a survivor .According to statistics .you are more than twice as likely to die of skin cancer than a woman ,and nine times more likely to die of AIDS. Assuming you make it to the end of your natural term, about 78 years for men in Australia, you will die on average five years before a woman. There are many reasons for this-typically, men take more risks than woman and are more likely to drink and smoke but perhaps more importantly, men don't go to the doctor. "Men aren't seeing doctors as often as they should, " says Dr. Gullotta, "This is particularly so for the over-40s,when diseases tend to strike." Gullotta says a healthy man should visit the doctor every year or two. For those over 45,it should be at least once a year. Two months ago Gullotta saw a 50-year-old ma who had delayed doing anything about his smoker's cough for a year. "When I finally saw him it had already spread and he has since died from lung cancer" he says, "Earlier detection and treatment may not have cured him, but it would have prolonged this life" According to a recent survey, 95%of women aged between 15 and early 40s see a doctor once a year, compared to 70% of men in the same age group. "A lot of men think they are invincible (不可战胜的)"Gullotta says "They only come in when a friend drops dead on the golf course and they think" Geez, if it could happen to him. Then there is the ostrich approach," some men are scared of what might be there and would rather not know, " says Dr. Ross Cartmill. "Most men get their cars serviced more regularly than they service their bodies," Cartmill says .He believes most diseases that commonly affect men could be addressed by preventive check-ups Regular check-ups for men would inevitably place strain on the public purse, Cartmill says." But prevention is cheaper in the long run than having to treat the diseases. Besides, the ultimate cost is far greater: it is called premature death." 57.Why does the author congratulate his male readers at the beginning of the passage? A. They are more likely to survive serious diseases today. B. Their average life span has been considerably extended. C. They have lived long enough to read this article. D. They are sure to enjoy a longer and happier live. 58.What does the author state is the most important reason men die five years earlier on average than women? A. men drink and smoke much more than women B. men don't seek medical care as often as women C. men aren't as cautions as women in face of danger D. men are more likely to suffer from fatal diseases 59. Which of the following best completes the sentence "Geez, if it could happen to him,…'(line2,para,8)? A. it could happen to me, too B. I should avoid playing golf C. Store managers are often the last to hear complaints, and often find out only when their regular customers decide t frequent their competitors, according to a study jointly conducted by Verde group and Wharton school "Storytelling hurts retailers and entertains consumers," said Paula Courtney, President of the Verde group." the store loses the customer, but the shopper must also find a replacement." On average, every unhappy customer will complain to at least four other, and will no longer visit the specific store for every dissatisfied customer, a store will lose up to three more due to negative reviews. The resulting "snowball effect" can be disastrous to retailers. According to the research, shoppers who purchased clothing encountered the most problems. ranked second and third were grocery and electronics customers. The most common complaints include filled parking lots, cluttered (塞满了的) shelves, overloaded racks, out-of-stock items, long check-out lines, and rude salespeople. During peak shopping hours, some retailers solved the parking problems by getting moonlighting local police to work as parking attendants. Some hired flag wavers to direct customers to empty parking spaces. This guidance climinated the need for customers to circle the parking lot endlessly, and avoided confrontation between those eyeing the same parking space. Retailers can relieve the headaches by redesigning store layouts, pre-stocking sales items, hiring speedy andexperienced cashiers, and having sales representatives on hand to answer questions. Most importantly, salespeople should be diplomatic and polite with angry customers. "Retailers who're responsive and friendly are more likely to smooth over issues than those who aren’t so friendly." said Professor Stephen Hoch. "Maybe something as simple as a greeter at the store entrance would help." Customers can also improve future shopping experiences by filing complaints to the retailer, instead of complaining to the rest of the world. Retailers are hard-pressed to improve when they have no idea what is wrong. 注意:此部分试题请在答题卡2上作答 62. Why are store managers often the last to hear complaints? A Most customers won't bother to complain even if they have had unhappy experiences. B Customers would rather relate their unhappy experiences to people around them. C Few customers believe the service will be improved. D Customers have no easy access to store managers. 63. What does Paula Courtney imply by saying " … the shopper must also find a replacement" (Line 2, Para. 4)? A New customers are bound to replace old ones. B It is not likely the shopper can find the same products in other stores. C Most stores provide the same D Not complaining to the manager causes the shopper some trouble too. 64. Shop owners often hire moonlighting police as parking attendants so that shoppers_____ A can stay longer browsing in the store B won't have trouble parking their cars C won't have any worries about security D can find their cars easily after shopping 65. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once. Questions 47 to 56 are based on the following passage. Space is a dangerous place, not only because of meteors(流星) but also because of rays from the sun and other stars. The atmosphere again acts 47 our protective blanket on earth. Light gets through, and this is essential for plants to make the food which we 48 . Heat, too, makes our environments tolerable and some ultraviolet rays(紫外线的) penetrate the 49 .Cosmic(宇宙的) rays of various kinds come 50 the air from outer space, but enormous quantities of radiation from the sun are screened off. As soon as men leave the atmosphere they are exposed to this radiation; 51 their spacesuits or the walls of their spacecraft, if they are inside, 52 prevent a lot of radiation damage. Radiation is the greatest known danger to explorers in 53 . Doses of radiation are measured in units called “rems (雷姆)”. We all 54 radiation here on earth from the sun, from cosmic rays and from radioactive minerals. The “normal” dose of radiation that we receive each year is about two millirems; it 55 according to where you live, and this is a very rough estimate. Scientists have reason to think that a man can put up with far more radiation 56 without being damaged; the figure of 60 rems has been agreed. Passage One Questions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage. As regards social conventions, we must say a word about the well known English class system. This is an embarrassing subject for English people, and one they tend to be ashamed of, though during the present century class-consciousness has grown less and less, and the class system less rigid. But it still exists below the surface. Broadly speaking, it means there are two classes, the “middle class” and the “working class”. (We shall ignore for a moment the old “upper class”, including the hereditary aristocracy, since it is extremely small in numbers; but some of its members have the right to sit in the House ofLords, and some newspapers take a surprising interest in their private life.) The middle class consists chiefly of well to do businessmen and professional people of all kinds. The working class consists chiefly of manual and unskilled workers. The most obvious difference between them is in their accent. Middle class people use slightly varying kinds of “received pronunciation” which is the kind of English spoken by BBC announcers and taught to overseas pupils. Typical working class people speak in many different local accents which are generally felt to be rather ugly and uneducated. One of the biggest barriers of social equality in England is the two class education system. To have been to a so called “public school”immediately marks you out as one of the middle class. The middle classes tend to live a more formal life than working class people, and are usually more cultured. Their midday meal is “lunch” and they have a rather formal evening meal called “dinner”, whereas the working man’s dinner, if his working hours permit, is at midday, and his smaller, late evening meal is called supper. As we have said, however, the class system is much less rigid than it was, and for a long time it has been government policy to reduce class distinctions. Working class students very commonly receive a university education and enter the professions, and working class incomes have grown so much recently that the distinctions between the two classes are becoming less and less clear. However, regardless of one’s social status, certain standards of politeness are expected of everybody, and a well bred person is polite to everyone he meets, and treats a laborer with the same respect he gives an important businessman. Servility inspires both embarrassment and dislike. Even the word “sir”, except in school and in certain occupations (e.g. commerce, the army, etc.) sounds too servile to be commonly used. 57.The middle class mainly refers to people . [A]who were born as aristocrat [B]who have the right to sit in the House of Lords [C]who speak in many different local accents [D]who are prosperous businessmen or who work in some professions 58.The most obvious difference between the working class and the middle class in English is their. [A]dress[B]work [C]accent[D]meal 59.Why isn’t the word “sir” commonly used in Britain? [A]Because it sounds too servile and is likely to cause embarrassment. [B]Because it can only be used in some certain occupations. [C]Because it is an impolite word. [D]Because it shows that the speaker is not a well-bred person. 60.The “upper class” in England today . [A]are extremely small in number so that media pays no attention to them [B]still uses old words like “Sir” in their everyday life [C]includes the hereditary aristocracy [D]refers only to the royal family 61.Which of the following is not true about the English class system? [A]It is an embarrassing subject for English people. [B]Working class students cannot receive a university education. [C]The class system is much less rigid than it was. [D]The class system still exists below the surface.。
2008年英语专业四级考试真题及答案3
TEXT C My heart sank when the man at the immigration counter gestured to the back room. l'm an American born and raised, and this was Miami, where I live, but they weren't quite ready to let me in yet. "Please wait in here, Ms Abujaber," the immigration officer said. My husband, with his very American last name, accompanied me. He was getting used to this. The same thing had happened recently in Canada when I'd flown to Montreal to speak at a book event. That time they held me for 45 minutes. Today we were returning from a literary festival in Jamaica, and I was startled that I was being sent "in back" once again. The officer behind the counter called me up and said, "Miss, your name looks like the name of someone who's on our wanted list. We're going to have to check you out with Washington." "How long will it take?" "Hard to say ... a few minutes," he said. "We'll call you when we're ready for you." After an hour, Washington still hadn't decided anything about me. "Isn't this computerized?" I asked at the counter. "Can't you just look me up?" Just a few more minutes, they assured me. After an hour and a half, I pulled my cell phone out to call the friends I was supposed to meet that evening. An officer rushed over. "No phones!" he said. "For all we know you could be calling a terrorist cell and giving them information." "I'm just a university professor," I said. My voice came out in a squeak. "Of course you are. And we take people like you out of here in leg irons every day." I put my phone away. My husband and 1 were getting hungry and tired. Whole families had been brought into the waiting room, and the place was packed with excitable children, exhausted parents, even a flight attendant. I wanted to scream, to jump on a chair and shout: "I'm an American citizen; a novelist; l probably teach English literature to your children." Or would that all be counted against me? After two hours in detention, I was approached by one of the officers. "You're free to go," he said. No explanation or apologies. For a moment, neither of us moved, we were still in shock. Then we leaped to our feet. "Oh, one more thing." He handed me a tattered photocopy with an address on it. "If you weren't happy with your treatment, you can write to this agency." "Will they respond?" I asked. "I don't know --- I don't know of anyone who's ever written to them before." Then he added, "By the way, this will probably keep happening each time you travel internationally." "What can I do to keep it from happening again?" He smiled the empty smile we'd seen all day. "Absolutely nothing." After telling several friends about our ordeal, probably the most frequent advice I've heard in response is to change my name. Twenty years ago, my own graduate school writing professor advised me to write under a pen name so that publishers wouldn't stick me in what he called "the ethnic ghetto" --- a separate, secondary shelf in the bookstore. But a name is an integral part of anyone's personal and professional identity -just like the town you're born in and the place where you're raised. Like my father, I'll keep the name, but my airport experience has given me a whole new perspective on what diversity and tolerance are supposed to mean. I had no idea that being an American would ever be this hard. 90. The author was held at the airport because _____. A. she and her husband returned from Jamaica. B. her name was similar to a terrorist's. C. she had been held in Montreal. D. she had spoken at a book event. 91. She was not allowed to call her friends because _____. A. her identity hadn't been confirmed yet. B. she had been held for only one hour and a half. C. there were other families in the waiting room. D. she couldn't use her own cell phone. 92. We learn from the passage that the author would _____ to prevent similar experience from happening again.A. write to the agencyB. change her nameC. avoid traveling abroadD. do nothing 93. Her experiences indicate that there still exists _____ in the US.A. hatredB. discriminationC. toleranceD. diversity 94. The author sounds in the last paragraph. A. impatient B. bitter C. worried D. ironic TEXT D Public speaking fills most people with dread. Humiliation is the greatest fear; self-exposure and failing to appeal to the audience come a close second. Women hate it most, since girls are pressurized from an early age to be concerned with appearances of all kinds. Most people have plenty of insecurities, and this seems like a situation that will bring them out. If you were under pressure to be perfect, you are terrified of falling in the most public of ways. While extroverts will feel less fear before the ordeal, it does not mean they will necessarily do it better. Some very shy people manage to shine. When I met the British comedian Julian Clary, he was shy and cautious, yet his TV performances are perfect. In fact, personality is not the best predictor of who does it well. Regardless of what you are like in real life, the key seems to be to act yourself. Actual acting, as in performing the scripted lines of a character other than yourself, does not do the job. While politicians may limit damage by having carefully rehearsed, written scripts to speak from, there is always a hidden awareness among the audience that the words might not be true. Likewise, the incredibly perfect speeches of many American academics are far from natural. You may end up buying their book on the way out, but soon afterwards, it is much like fast food, and you get a nameless sense that you've been cheated. Although, as Earl Spencer proved at his sister Princess Diana's funeral, it is possible both to prepare every word and to act naturally. A script rarely works and it is used to help most speakers. But, being yourself doesn't work either. If you spoke as if you were in your own kitchen, it would be too authentic, too unaware of the need to communicate with an audience. I remember going to see British psychiatrist R. D. Laing speak in public. He behaved like a seriously odd person, talking off the top of his head. Although he was talking about madness and he wrote on mental illness, he seemed to be exhibiting rather than explaining it. The best psychological place from which to speak is an unselfconscious self-consciousness, providing the illusion of being natural. Studies suggest that this state of "flow", as psychologists call it, is very satisfying. 95. Women hate public speaking most mainly because of _____. A. their upbringing very early on. B. their inability to appeal to the audience. C. their sense of greater public pressure. D. their sense of greater humiliation. 96. "this" in Paragraph Two refers to A. insecurity. B. sense of failure. C. public speaking. D. pressure. 97. Which of the following is NOT the author's viewpoint? A. Acting like performers spoils the message in a speech. B. Perfection of scripts is necessary in making good impressions. C. Acting naturally means less dependence on the prepared script. D. There should be a balance between actual acting and acting naturally. 98. What is the author's view on personality? A. Personality is the key to success in public speaking. B. Extroverts are better public speakers. C. Introverts have to learn harder to be good speakers. D. Factors other than personality ensure better performance. 99. The author implies that while speaking R. D. Laing _____. A. was both too casual and authentic. B. was acting like a performer. C. was keeping a good balance. D. was aware of his audience. 100. In the last paragraph the author recommends that ____. A. you forget about your nervousness. B. you feel natural and speak naturally. C. you may feel nervous, but appear naturally. D. you may imagine yourself to be natural.。

He will address us on the subject of the Community Policing Program. Most of you know that Mr. Washington has a distinguished record as head of our police force for more than ten years. However, you may not know that he also holds a master’s degree in criminology and studied abroad for a year with the international police force whichdeals with crimes around the world. Mr. Washington first introduced the Community Policing Program 8 years ago. The idea behind the program is to get the police officers out of their cars and into our neighborhoods where they can talk directly to merchants and residents about the real dynamics of our city. These officers do more than make arrests. They try to find ways to help solve the problems that contribute to crime in the first place. Often that means hooking people up with services offered by other city agencies, such as schools, hospitals, housing, drug treatment centers. And the program seems to be working: crime is down and our citizens report that they feel more secure. Today Mr. Washington is going to tell us more about this program. Now let’s welcome Mr. Robert Washington.26. What is the purpose of the speaker’s remarks? He will address us on the subject of community policing program.27. However, you may not know that he also holds a master’s degree in criminology and studied abroad for a year with the international police force which deals with crimes around the world. Mr. Washington first introduced the community policing program 8 years ago.28. How has the Community Policing Program turned out to be?And the program seems to be working, crime is down and our citizens report that they feel more secure.Passage 2There are between 3000 and 6000 public languages in the world, and we must add approximately 6 billion private languages since each one of us necessarily has one. Considering these facts, the possibilities for breakdowns in communication seem infinite in number. However, we do communicate successfully from time to time. And we do learn to speak languages. But learning to speak languages seems to be a very mysterious process. For a long time, people thought that we learned a language onlyby imitation and association. For example, a baby touches a hot pot and starts to cry. The mother says, “Hot, hot!” And the baby, when it stops crying, imitates the mother and says, “Hot, hot!” However, Noam Chomsky, a famous expert in language, pointed out that although children do learn some words by imitation and association, they also combine words to make meaningful sentences in ways that are unique, unlearned and creative. Because young children can make sentences they have never heard before, Chomsky suggested that human infants are born with the ability to learn language. Chomsky meant that underneath all the differences between public and private languages, there is a universal language mechanism that makes it possible for us, as infants, to learn any language in the world. This theory explains the potential that human infants have for learning language. But it does not really explain how children come to use language in particular ways.Questions 30 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard.Question 30. Why does the speaker say there are great possibilities for communication breakdowns? There are numerous public and private languages.Question 31. What is Chomsky’s point on the ability to learn a language?Human infants are born with the ability to learn language and the potential to learn any language in the world.Question 32. What does Chomsky’s theory fail to explain according to the speaker? It does not really explain how children come to use language in particular ways. Passage 3When US spacewoman Joan Higginbotham is not flying and working in space, she might be found somewhere on earth giving a speech. Higginbotham, who grew up in Chicago and became an engineer before joining NASA, that is the National Air and Space Administration, gives about a dozen speeches a year. Each speech is different because she tailors her remarks to each audience. Through interviews and E-mails, she finds out in advance her listeners' educational level and what information they want to know. On the subject of space walks, for example, audiences vary in their interests and how much complexity they can comprehend. To elementary school children, Higginbotham may discuss a problem that many kids want to know about. "How do spacemen in a spacesuit eat, drink, and go to the bathroom?" Her answer is “the spac esuit is really a small spacecraft with room for food and water-containers, and a waste-collection system.” To a high school audience, she might satisfy a curiosity that often arises in her pre-speech interviews with students who obviouslyhave seen many s cience fiction movies. “Do spacemen carry weapons in case they encounter enemies in space?” Her answer is "No". To scientists, she might provide technical details on such topics as the design of spacesuits that protects spacemen from the deadly temperature extremes of space. Just as elaborate preparation is required for success in space, Higginbotham says that it’s important for speakers to learn as much as possible about their listeners before a speech because every audience is different.33. What did Joan Higginbotham do before joining in NASA?34. How does Higginbotham prepare her speech on space walks?35. What does the high school audience want to know about space travel?Compound Dictation:Crime is increasing worldwide. There is every reason to believe the trend will continue through the next few decades. Crime rates have always been high in multi-cultural industrialized societies such as the United States. But a new phenomenon has appeared on the world scene: rapidly rising crime rates in nations that previously reported few offences. Street crimes such as robbery, rape, murder and auto theft are clearly rising, particularly in Eastern European countries, such as Hungary, and in Western European nations, such as the Untied Kingdom. What is driving this crime explosion? There are no simple answers. Still, there are certain conditions associated with rising crime. Increasing heterogeneity of population, greater cultural pluralism, higher immigration, democratization of governments, changing national borders, greater economic growth and the lack of accepted social ideas of right and wrong. These conditions are increasingly observable around the world. For instance, cultures that were previously isolated and homogenous, such as Japan, Denmark and Greece, are now facing the sort of cultural variety that has been common in America for most of its history. Multiculturalism can be a rewarding, enriching experience, but it can also lead to a clash of values. Heterogeneity in societies will be the rule in the 21st century, and failure to recognize and plan for such diversity can lead to serious crime problems.Part I Writing (30minutes)The Use of Disposable Plastic Bags1.一次性塑料袋曾被广泛的使用2.造成的问题3.限制使用的意义注意:此部分试题在答题卡1上。

Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)(15 minutes) Directions: In this part, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on Answer Sheet 1.For questions 1-7,choose the best answer from the four choices marked A),B),C) and D).For questions 8-10,complete the sentences with the information given in the passage. That’s enough, kidsIt was a lovely day at the park and Stella Bianchi was enjoying the sunshine with her two children when a young boy, aged about four, approached her two-year-old son and pushed him to the ground.“I‟d watched him for a little while and my son was the fourth or fifth child he‟d shoved,” she says.” I went over to them, picked up my son, turned to the boy and said, firmly, ‟No, we don‟t push,” What happened next was unexpected.“The boy‟s mother ran toward me from across the park,” Stella says,” I thought she was coming over to apologize, but instead she started shouting at me for disciplining her child, All I did was let him know his behavior was unacceptable. Was I supposed to sit back while her kid did whatever he wanted, hurting other children in the process?”Getting your own children to play nice is difficult enough. Dealing with other people‟s children has become a minefield. In my house, jumping on the sofa is not allowed. In my sister‟s house it‟s encouraged. For her, it‟s about kids being kids:”If you can‟t do it at three, when can you do it?”Each of these philosophies is valid and, it has to be said, my son loves visiting his aunt‟s house. But I find myself saying “no” a lot when her kids are over at mine. That‟s OK between sisters but becomes dangerous territory when you‟re talking to the children of friends or acquaintances.“Kids aren‟t all raised the same,” agrees Professor Naomi White of Monash University.” But there is still an idea that they‟re the property of the parent. We see our children as an extension of ourselves, so if you‟re saying that my child is behaving inappropriately, then that‟s somehow a criticism of me.”In those circumstances, it‟s difficult to know whether to approach the child directly or the parent first. There are two schools of thought.“I‟d go to the child first,” says Andrew Fuller, author of Tricky Kids. Usually a quiet reminder that ‟we don‟t do that here‟ is enough. Kids nave finely tuned antennae (直觉) for how to behave in different settings.”He points out bringing it up with the parent first may make them feel neglectful, which could cause problems. Of course, approaching the child first can bring its own headaches, too. This is why White recommends that you approach the parents first. Raise your concerns with the parents if they‟re there and ask them to deal with it,” she says. Asked how to approach a parent in this situation, psychologist Meredith Fuller answers:”Explain your needs as well as stressing the importance of the friendship. Preface your r emarks with something like: ‟I know you‟ll think I‟m silly but in my house I don‟t want…‟”When it comes to situations where you‟re caring for another child, white is straightforward: “common sense must prevail. If things don‟t go well, then have a chat.”There‟re a couple of new grey areas. Physical punishment, once accepted from any adult, is no longer appropriate. “A new set of considerations has come to the fore as part of the debate about how we handle children.”For Andrew Fuller, the child-centric na ture of our society has affected everyone:” The rules are different now from when today‟s parents were growing up,” he says, “Adults are scared of saying: ‟don‟t swear‟, or asking a child to stand up on a bus. They‟re worried that there will be conflict if they point these things out –either from older children, or their parents.”He sees it as a loss of the sense of common public good and public courtesy (礼貌), and says that adults suffer form it as much as child.Meredith Fuller agrees: “A code of conduct is hard to create when you‟re living in a world in which everyone is exhausted from overwork and lack of sleep, and a world in which nice people are perceived to finish last.”“I t‟s about what I‟m doing and what I need,” Andrew Fuller says. ”the days when a kid came home from school and said, “I got into trouble”. And dad said, …yo u probably deserved it‟, are over. Now the parents are charging up to the school to have a go at teachers.”This jumping to our children‟s defense is part of what fuels the “walking on eggshells” feeling that surrounds our dealings with other people‟s chil dren. You know that if you remonstrate (劝诫) with the child, you‟re going to have to deal with the parent. I t‟s admirable to be protective of our kids, but is it good?“Children have to learn to negotiate the world on their own, within reasonable boundaries,” White says. “I suspect that it‟s only certain sectors of the populationdoing the running to the school –better –educated parents are probably more likely to be too involved.”White believes our notions of a more child-centered, it‟s a way of talking ab out treating our children like commodities(商品). We‟re centered on them but in ways that reflect positively on us. You can rent a bicycle, visit the Van Gogh or Anne Frank museum, or take a watertaxi. But when the sun goes down, the partying begins. In the big clubs and in coffee shops, touristsgather to hang out, talk politics and smoke.Several areas of the city clearly show the two worlds that rule Amsterdam. And they’reall within a short cab ride of each other. For example, Dam Square attracts daytime sightseers to its festivals, open markets, concerts and other events. Several beautiful and very popular hotels can be found there. And there is the Royal Palace and the Magna Plaza shopping mall. But as evening descends on Dam Square so do the party-seekers. Hip pop or funk music begins blaring from Club Paradiso and Club Melkweg. These are two of the most popular clubs in Europe. So if you come, be ready to dance. The clubs don’t shut down until 4 am.And while you are there, check out the various inexpensive ways to t our the city. Don’t worry about getting lost. Although Dutch is the official language, most people in Amsterdam speak English and are happy to help you with directions. And you’ll notice that half the people in the streets are on bicycles. They rent for US$17to $20 for a whole day.Amsterdam also has a good canal system. From anywhere between US$2 and $9.50, you’can use the canal bus or a water taxi to cruise the “Venice of the North”.You can take in the picturesque canal house architecture: The rows of neat, narrow four-story dwellings of brownstone with large windows are well worth seeing. Many of them are severalcenturies old.You might also want to jump out of the canal bus at the Museum Quarter and start walking. Masterpieces by Dutch artists such as Rembrandt, Bruegel, Van Gogh and others are on display at the Van Gogh Museum, Rembrandt House and others. The city has an appreciation of its historic past. One place to visit is the Anne Frank House in Nine Streets. It was there that the young Jewish girl wrote her famous diary during World War II. Visitors can view Anne’s original diary and climb behind the bookcase to the room where she and her family hid from the Nazis for two years.81. At the beginning of the passage, the author indicates that ______.A. Amsterdam is generally known as a quiet city.B. parties go on all day long in Amsterdam.C. Amsterdam presents two different pictures.D. Amsterdam attracts many daytime visitors.82. Which tourist attraction is cited for elaboration in Paragraphs Four and Five?A. Royal Palace.B. Dam Square.C. Club Paradiso.D. Magna Plaza.83. According to the passage, the local people have all the following characteristics EXCEPT______.A. they are party goers.B. they show hospitality.C. they can speak English.D. they are fond of cycling.84. Which of the following adjectives can best describe Amsterdam as a tourist city?A. Modern.B. Delightful.C. Quiet.D. Historic.TEXT BIn an article some Chinese scholars are described as being “tantalized by the mysterious dragon bone hieroglyphics.” Tantalized is one of many English words that have their origins in myths and legends of the past (in this case, Greek and Roman ones). The meaning of the verb tantalize is a very particular one: “to promise or show somethi ng desirable to a person and then take it away; to tease by arousing hope.” Many (but not all) English dictionaries give you a brief indication of a word’s origins in brackets before or after the explanation of the meaning. For tantalize the following explanation is given: [> Tantalus]. This means that you should look up the name Tantalus to find out the word’s origins, and if you do, you will find out that in Greek mythology, Tantalus was a king who was punished in the lower world with eternal hunger and thirst; he was put up to his chin in water that always moved away when he tried to drink it and with fruit on branches above him placed just a little bit out of his reach. Can you see why his name was changed into a verb meaning “to tease or torment by arousing desire”?Another example is the word siren, familiar to us as the mechanical device that makes such an alarming sound when police cars, ambulances, or fire engines approach. This word also has its origins in Greek mythology. The traveler Odysseus (Ulysses to the Romans) made his men plug their ears so that they wouldn’t hear the dangerous voices of the sirens, creatures who were half bird and half woman and who lured sailors to their deaths on sharp rocks. So the word came to be associated both with a loud sound and with danger! When someone speaks of a “jovial mood” or a “herculean effort,” he or she is using words with origins in mythology. Look these words up to find their meaning and relationship to myths. Many common words, such as the names for the days of the week and the months of the year, also come from mythology. Wednesday derives from the ancient Norse king of the gods, Woden, andThursday was originally Thor’s day, in honour of Thor, the god of thunder. As a matter of fact, all the planets, except the one we live on, bear names that come from Roman mythology, including the planet that is farthest away from the sun and for that reason was called after the Roman god of the dead. This god has also given his name to one of the chemical elements. Several other elementshave names that come from mythology, too.It seems that myths and legends live on in the English language.85. The purpose of the first sentence in Paragraph One is ______.A. to describe the work of some Chinese scholars.B. to arou se readers’ interest in hieroglyphics.C. to lead readers onto the main theme.D. to link the preceding part to the present one.86. We leam from the passage, all English dictionaries include ______.A. legends.B. mythology.C. word origins.D. word definitions.87. The example of tantalize is to show ______.A. how the word came into existence.B. how Tantalus was punished in the lower world.C. how all English dictionaries show word origins.D. how the meaning of the word changed over the years.88. According to the passage, which of the following does NOT have origins in myths orlegends?A. Jovial.B. Wednesday.C. Earth.D. March.89. Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?A. Greek and Roman Mythology in Language.B. Mythological Origins of English Words.C. Historical Changes in Word Meanings.D. Mythology and Common Words.TEXT CMy heart sank when the man at the immigration counter gestured to the back room. I’m an American born and raised, and this was Miami, where I live, but they weren’t quite ready to letme in yet.“Please wait in here, Ms Abujaber,” the immigration officer said. My husband, with his very American last name, accompanied me. He was getting used to this. The same thing had happened recently in Canada whe n I’d flown to Montreal to speak at a book event. That time they held me for 45 minutes. Today we were returning from a literary festival in Jamaica, and I was startledthat I was being sent “in back” once again. The officer behind the counter called me up and said, “Miss, your name looks like the name of someone who’s on our wanted list. We’re going to have to check you out with Washington.”“How long will it take?”“Hard to say ... a few minutes,” he said. “We’ll call you when we’re ready for you.”After an hour, Washington still hadn’t decided anything about me. “Isn’t thiscomputerized?” I asked at the counter. “Can’t you just look me up?”Just a few more minutes, they assured me.After an hour and a half, I pulled my cell phone out to call the friends I was supposed to meet that evening. An officer rushed over. “No phones!” he said. “For all we know you could be calling a terrorist cell and giving them information.”“I’m just a university professor,” I said. My voice came out in a squeak.“Of course you are. And we take people like you out of here in leg irons every day.”I put my phone away.My husband and I were getting hungry and tired. Whole families had been brought into the waiting room, and the place was packed with excitable children, exhausted parents, even a flightattendant.I wanted to scream, to jump on a chair and shout: “I’m an American citizen; a novelist;I probably teach English literature to your children.” Or would that all be counted against me?After two hours in detention, I was appr oached by one of the officers. “You’re free to go,” he said. No explanation or apologies. For a moment, neither of us moved, we were still inshock. Then we leaped to our feet.“Oh, one more thing.” He handed me a tattered photocopy with an address on it. “If you weren’t happy with your treatment, you can write to this agency.”“Will they respond?” I asked.“I don’t know —I don’t know of anyone who’s ever written to them before.” Then he added, “By the way, this will probably keep happening each time you travel internationally.”“What can I do to keep it from happening again?”He smiled the empty smile we’d seen all day. “Absolutely nothing.”After telling several friends about our ordeal, probably the most frequent advice l’ve heard in response is to change my name. Twenty years ago, my own graduate school writing professor advised me to write under a pen name so that publishers wouldn’t stick me in what he called “the ethnic ghetto” — a separate, secondary shelf in the bookstore. But a name is an integral part of anyone’s personal and professional identity —just like the town you’re bom in and the placewhere you’re raised.Like my father, I’ll keep the name, but my airport experience has given me a whole new perspective on what diversity and tolerance are supposed to mean. I had no idea that being anAmerican would ever be this hard.90. The author was held at the airport because ______.A. she and her husband returned from Jamaica.B. her name was similar to a terrorist’s.C. she had been held in Montreal.D. she had spoken at a book event.91. She was not allowed to call her friends because ______.A. her identity hadn’t been confirmed yet.B. she had been held for only one hour and a haitiC. there were other families in the waiting room.D. she couldn’t use her own cell phone.92. We leam from the passage that the author would ______ to prevent similar experiencefrom happening again.A. write to the agencyB. change her nameC. avoid traveling abroadD. do nothing93. Her experiences indicate that there still exists ______ in the US.A. hatredB. discriminationC. toleranceD. diversity94. The author sounds ______ in the last paragraph.A. impatientB. bitterC. wordedD. ironicTEXT DPublic speaking fills most people with dread. Humiliation is the greatest fear;self-exposure and failing to appeal to the audience come a close second. Women hate it most, since girls are pressurized from an early age to be concerned with appearances of all kinds. Most people have plenty of insecurities, and this seems like a situation that will bring them out. If you were under pressure to be perfect, you are terrified of failing in the most publicof ways. Regardless of what you are like in real life, the key seems to be to act yourself.Actual acting, as in performing the scripted lines of a character other than yourself, does not do the job. While politicians may limit damage by having carefully rehearsed, written scripts to speak from, there is always a hidden awareness among the audience that the words might notbe true.Likewise, the incredibly perfect speeches of many American academics are far from natural. You may end up buying their book on the way out, but soon afterwards, it is much like fast food, and you get a nameless sense that you’ve been cheated.Although, as Earl Spencer proved at his sister Princess Diana’s funeral, it is possible both to prepare every word and to act naturally. A script rarely works and it is used to helpmost speakers.B ut, being yourself doesn’t work either. If you spoke as if you were in your own kitchen,it would be too authentic, too unaware of the need to communicate with an audience.I remember going to see British psychiatrist R. D. Laing speak in public. He behaved likea seriously odd person, talking off the top of his head. Although he was talking about madnessand he wrote on mental illness, he seemed to be exhibiting rather than explaining it.The best psychological place from which to speak is an unselfconscious self-consciousness, providing the illusion of being natural. Studies suggest that this state of “flow”, aspsychologists call it, is very satisfying.95. Women hate public speaking most mainly because of ______.A. their upbringing very early on.B. their inability to appeal to the audience.C. their sense of greater public pressure.D. their sense of greater humiliation.96. “this” in Paragraph Two refers to ______.A. insecurity.B. sense of failure.C. public speaking.D. pressure.97. Which of the fo llowing is NOT the author’s viewpoint?A. Acting like performers spoils the message in a speech.B. Perfection of scripts is necessary in making good impressions.C. Acting naturally means less dependence on the prepared script.D. There should be a balance between actual acting and acting naturally.98. What is the author’s view on personality?A. Personality is the key to success in public speaking.B. Extroverts are better public speakers.C. Introverts have to learn harder to be good speakers.D. Factors other than personality ensure better performance.99. The author implies that while speaking R. D. Laing ______.A. was both too casual and authentic.B. was acting like a performer.C. was keeping a good balance.D. was aware of his audience.100. In the last paragraph the author recommends that ______.A. you forget about your nervousness.B. you feel natural and speak naturally.C. you may feel nervous, but appear naturally.D. you may imagine yourself to be natural.PART VI WRITING (45 MIN)SECTION A COMPOSITION (35 MIN)December 5th is International Volunteers Day. Others never find a job in which they are really happy. They remain all their lives, square pegs in round holes. When we choose our careers, we need to ask ourselves two questions. First, what do we think we would like to be? Second, what kind of people are we? The idea, for example, of being a painter or a musician may seem very attractive; but unless we have great talent and are willing to work very hard, we are certain to fail in these occupations and failure will lead to unhappiness in life. So, it is important to assess our suitability for a certain career in job search.★ Part II LISTENING COM PREHENSION◆Section A CONVERSATIONSConversation 1M: Is that Anne Shore?W: Yes, speaking.M: Hello, it’s Eric from London.W: Hello Eric, how can I help you?M: I’m fixing up our next project team meeting and I just wanted to check some possibledates with you.W: Fine, let me just get my diary. Okay, which dates are you looking at?M: I’ve spoken to the others and(1) they prefer either the third week of May or the secondweek of June.W: (1) Yes, both those weeks are pretty clear at the moment, except for the eleventh ofJune.M: Right, I’ve got that.W: So, where’s the meeting taking place this time7M: It was going to be in London, (2) but I spoke to Carlos in Mexico City and he suggested Chicago. He thinks it’ll be more convenient for most of the te am.W: (2) He’s probably right. It would certainly be much easier for me as well because I can fly from Toronto. And I’m sure you could find a meeting room somewhere near the airport.M: That’s a good idea. I’ll check out some hotels in that area and get b ack to you towardsthe end of the week.W: Fine, but I’m not in the office on Friday.M: (3) Okay, I’ll call you later in the afternoon on Thursday.W: No problem, bye!Conversation 2M: We’re having a debate on advertising Thursday evening, and I have to take part.W: That’s interesting; I should like to hear what people think about advertising.M: What is there to say? We must have advertising, mustn’t we?W: Why?M: Well, we wouldn’t know what there was to buy if we didn’t have advertisements.W: Yes, th at’s tree, up to a point. Advertisements provide information that we need. If someone has produced a new article, naturally the seller wants to tell us about it.M: Yes, and the advertisements tell us which product is the best.W: Do they? I don’t think so. (4) Every manufacturer says that his product is the best, or at least tries to give the impression. Only one can be the best, so the others are misleading, aren’t they?M: Well, in a way, I suppose, but we don’t have to believe them, do we?W: Are you sa ying that advertisements aren’t effective? I don’t think that intelligent businessmen would spend millions of dollars on advertising if nobody believed the advertisements,do you?M: Perhaps not, but after all, it’s their money that they’re spending.W: Is it? I think not. (5) The cost of advertising is added to the price of the article. You and I and all the other people who buy the article pay for the advertising.M: Well, I suppose we get something for our money ... some information.W: Yes, but don’t forget it’s often misleading information, and sometimes harmful.M: Harmful?W: What about advertisements designed to persuade young people to smoke cigarettes, wouldn’t you say they’re harmful?。

When we went shopping at supermarkets and departments stores, shopping assistants often provided free plastic bags for our convenience. For a while, life without them seemed unimaginable for most of us.However, disposable plastic bags do bring severe damage to our environment. Costumers usually threw them away after use, and because they are thin and hard to decompose, these plastic products will exist for a long time. This is an immediate threat to our earth and water.Nowadays, the government has passed relevant regulations for limiting the use of disposable plastic bags: they are not free any more. In some shopping places, in order to invoke the public awareness of environmental protection, plastic bags are offered in a much higher price. As a result, people are changing their behavior: paper and clothing bags that vanished for a long time come back to our daily life. It is true that by limiting its usage, everyone in this society contributes some effort to the improvement of the environment.Part V Cloze67-86 ADABD CCABD ACDCB A DBCAPart VI Translation87. that they haven’t found answers to88.What most parents are concerned about89. in case it turn(s) cold90. decided to start their own business91. until it was accidentally found by a doctor。
