myfellowcitizens: Todaywecelebratethemysteryofamericanrenewal. Thisceremonyisheldinthedepthofwinter.But,bythewordswespeakandthefac esweshowtheworld,weforcethespring.aspringrebornintheworld'solde stdemocracy,thatbringsforththevisionandcouragetoreinventamerica. whenourfoundersboldlydeclaredamerica'sindependencetotheworlda ndourpurposestothealmighty,theyknewthatamerica,toendure,wouldhaveto change.notchangeforchange'ssake,butchangetopreserve
america'sideals;life,liberty,thepursuitofhappiness.Thoughwemarcht othemusicofourtime,ourmissionistimeless.Eachgenerationofamericansmu stdefinewhatitmeanstobeanamerican.
onbehalfofournation,isalutemypredecessor,PresidentBush,forhishalf-centu ryofservicetoamerica.andithankthemillionsofmenandwomenwhosesteadfa stnessandsacrificetriumphedoverdepression,fascismandcommunism. Today,agenerationraisedintheshadowsofthecoldwarassumesnewresponsibi litiesinaworldwarmedbythesunshineoffreedombutthreatenedstillbyancient hatredsandnewplagues.
Raisedinunrivaledprosperity,weinheritaneconomythatisstilltheworld' ;sstrongest,butisweakenedbybusinessfailures,stagnantwages,increasingine quality,anddeepdivisionsamongourpeople. whenGeorgewashingtonfirsttooktheoathihavejustsworntouphold,newstrav eledslowlyacrossthelandbyhorsebackandacrosstheoceanbyboat.now,thesig htsandsoundsofthisceremonyarebroadcastinstantaneouslytobillionsaround theworld.
communicationsandcommerceareglobal;investmentismobile; technologyisalmostmagical;andambitionforabetterlifeisnowuniversal.wee arnourlivelihoodinpeacefulcompetitionwithpeopleallacrosstheearth. Profoundandpowerfulforcesareshakingandremakingourworld,andtheurgen tquestionofourtimeiswhetherwecanmakechangeourfriendandnotourenemy . Thisnewworldhasalreadyenrichedthelivesofmillionsofamericanswhoareab letocompeteandwininit.Butwhenmostpeopleareworkingharderforless;whe notherscannotworkatall;whenthecostofhealthcaredevastatesfamiliesandthr eatenstobankruptmanyofourenterprises,greatandsmall;whenfearofcrimero bslaw-abidingcitizensoftheirfreedom;andwhenmillionsofpoorchildrencan notevenimaginetheliveswearecallingthemtolead,wehavenotmadechangeou rfriend. weknowwehavetofacehardtruthsandtakestrongsteps.Butwehavenotdoneso. instead,wehavedrifted,andthatdriftinghaserodedourresources,fracturedour
economy,andshakenourconfidence. Thoughourchallengesarefearsome,soareourstrengths.andamericanshaveev erbeenarestless,questing,hopefulpeople.wemustbringtoourtasktodaythevis ionandwillofthosewhocamebeforeus.
Fromourrevolution,thecivilwar,totheGreatdepressiontothecivilrightsmove ment,ourpeoplehavealwaysmusteredthedeterminationtoconstructfromthes ecrisesthepillarsofourhistory. ThomasJeffersonbelievedthattopreservetheveryfoundationsofournation,w ewouldneeddramaticchangefromtimetotime.well,myfellowcitizens,thisiso urtime.Letusembraceit. ourdemocracymustbenotonlytheenvyoftheworldbuttheengineofourownren ewal.Thereisnothingwrongwithamericathatcannotbecuredbywhatisrightwi thamerica.
andsotoday,wepledgeanendtotheeraofdeadlockanddrift;anewseasonofame ricanrenewalhasbegun.Torenewamerica,wemustbebold.wemustdowhatno generationhashadtodobefore.wemustinvestmoreinourownpeople,intheirjo bs,intheirfuture,andatthesametimecutourmassivedebt.andwemustdosoina worldinwhichwemustcompeteforeveryopportunity.itwillnotbeeasy;itwillre quiresacrifice.Butitcanbe
