Whatever critical paradigm we use to discuss and analyze literature, there is still an artistic quality to the works. Literature is important to us because it speaks to us, it is universal, and it affects us. Even when it is ugly, literature is beautiful.

Miles taught me that the hope my father had in abundance did not die with him. When I look at Miles, I know what my father saw in me - hope for a better future. I wish there were a way to share with my father his precious grandson. Fate didn't see it that way. My mother married again, and now both Miles and I benefit from a caring stepfather. We have developed a father and son bond based on love, mutual admiration, and respect. My stepfather has been there for me as father, friend, and counselor. He also had taught me that fathers and sons don't necessarily have to share flesh and bones. A father is someone who is willing to claim a son as his own and take the responsibility of that relationship. I am fortunate to have his influence in my life.

What is literature 什么是文学 ppt课件
• Such a formalist theory of
literature prevailed in the early and
mid-20th century among AngloAmerican New Critics, many of whom are represented in my lecture.
And Poe concludes that “ the death of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world.” Poe is opposed to “the heresy of the didactic” and calls for “pure” poetry. What he seems to be saying is that art does not lie in its message; poetry does not have to inculcate a moral; the artistry of the poem lies not so much in what is being said as in the way it says it.

Doctors and Teachers
❖ Although doctors and teachers both have professional status, there are many differences between the two professions. First, doctors are more highly respected than teachers by their communities. Second, as a rule, doctors can earn more money than teachers. For example, an experienced surgeon working in an urban area can earn over $200,000 annually while an experienced high school teacher working in an urban school district can earn up to $40,000 annually. Last, doctors have many more career options than teachers…. Moreover while doctors can easily establish a private practice and hospital affiliations in another city …. All in all, it’s easy to see that doctors have more respect, greater flexibility, and higher incomes than teachers.

Foreshadowing (3):
Foreshadowing applies primarily to plot, as a significant later event is prepared for by information provided earlier. A minor episode may foreshadow a major later one. A subplot often parallels and may foreshadow a main plot. A dialogue may suggest a later action. A symbol early in a story may sow the seed of understanding for the end.
They did go home by the river road, and it seemed very long; she was a little depressed, as she often was when she returned from James’s house. (“The Swing.” lines 75-76)
What is it about Julius, the husband, that annoys the wife? Is he an annoying person? Why do you think he behaves the way he does? Does he understand her emotional situation?
Questions for Discussion:
What is the significance of the opening sentence “As she grew old, she began to dream again”? Is it only the old age that causes the mother to dream and daydream more often now?
