Projects, resources, expectations and deadlines are all outcomes of negotiation. Some people negotiate deals for a living. Dr Herb Cohen is one of these professional talkers, called in by companies to negotiate on their behalf . He approaches the art of negotiation as a game because, as he is usually negotiating for somebody else, he says this helps him drain the emotional content from his conversation. He is working in a competitive field and needs to avoid being too adversarial. Whether he succeeds or not, it is important to him to make a good impression so that people will recommend him.The starting point for any deal, he believes, is to identify exactly what you want from each other. More often than not, one party will be trying to persuade the other round to their point of view. Negotiation requires two people at the end saying yes'. This can be a problem because one of them usually begins by saying "no'. However, although this can make talks more difficult, this is often just a starting point in the negotiation game. Top management may well reject the ideainitially because it is the safer option but they would not be there if they were not interested. It is a misconception that skilled negotiators are smooth operators in smart suits. Dr Cohen says that one of his strategies is to dress down so that the other side can relate to you. Pitch your look to suit your customer. You do not need to make them feel better than you but, For example, dressing in a style that is not overtly expensive or successful will make you more approachable. People will generally feel more comfortable with somebody who appears to be like them rather than superior to them. They may not like you but they will feel they can trust you.Dr Cohen suggests that the best way to sell your proposal is by getting into the world of the other side. Ask questions rather than give answers and take an interest in what the other person is saying, even if you think what they are saying is silly. You do not need to become their best friends but being too clever will alienate them. A lot of deals are made on impressions. Do not rush what you are saying---put a few hesitations in , do not try to blind them with your verbal dexterity. Also, you should repeat back to them what they have said to show you take them seriously.Inevitably some deals will not succeed. Generally the longer the negotiations go on, the better chance they have because people do not want to think their investment and energies have gone to waste. However , joint venture can mean joint risk and sometimes , if this becomes too great , neither party may be prepared to see the deal through . More common isa corporate culture clash between companies, which can put paid to any deal. Even having agreed a deal, things may not be tied up quickly because when the lawyers get involved, everything gets slowed down as they argue about small details.De Cohen thinks that children are the masters of negotiation. Their goals are totally selfish. They understand the decision-making process within families perfectly. If Mum refuses their request , they will troop along to Dad and pressure him. If al else fails, they will try the grandparents, using some emotional blackmail. They can also be verysingle-minded and have an inexhaustible supply of energy for the cause they are pursuing. So there are lesson to be learned from watching and listening to children.15 Dr Cohen treats negotiation as a game in order toA put people at easeB remain detachedC be competitiveD impress rivals16 Many people say "no' to a suggestion in the beginning toA convince the other party of their point of viewB show they are not really interestedC indicate they wish to take the easy optionD protect their companys situation17 Dr Cohen says that when you are trying to negotiate you shouldA adapt your style to the people you are talking toB make the other side feel superior to youC dress in a way to make you feel comfortable.D try to make the other side like you18 According to Dr Cohen, understanding the other person will help you toA gain their friendshipB speed up the negotiationsC plan your next move.D convince them of your point of view19 Deals sometimes fail becauseA negotiations have gone on too longB the companies operate in different waysC one party risks more than the other.D the lawyers work too slowly20 Dr Cohen mentions childrens negotiation techniques to show that you shouldA be prepared to try every routeB try not to make people feel guiltyC be careful not to exhaust yourselfD control the decision-making process.参考答案:15 B16D 17A 18D19B 20 A文档内容到此结束,欢迎大家下载、修改、丰富并分享给更多有需要的人。

Questions 23 to 30.Interviews conducted by members of the ECE, (Economic Committee of Europe) with enterprises engaged in third-market cooperation have identified several areas in which problems occurred. Many of these problems are characteristic of the particular industrial sector in which the cooperation takes place and cannot be generalized to supply to other sectors. When vehicles and machinery made under cooperation arrangements are launched on new markets, substantial modifications may have to be made in basic features. Such changesmay be dictated by a lack of servicing facilities for the prescribed frequency of service for the standard model and an operating environment that is different form that prevailing in either of the partner's home markets. Since acceptance of the product in question by the client depends upon the manufacturer successfully satisfying his specifications, the partners must closely coordinatetheir ordering procedures in such a way that these changed specifications are communicated in time to the manufacturing plants. If the producing enterprise has a long lead time as a result of internal planning procedures, it may find it difficult to make the necessary changes in the standard model during the time available, to the detriment of its relations with clients in the third market. Clearly, this is an area in which effective managerial techniques can prevent such problems from arising.Rapid fluctuations in demand are characteristic of the market for many of the chemical products manufactured under east-west cooperation arrangement. In order to respond to such shifts in demand, the supplying enterprise must remain in close touch with the market, either directly or through its western partner, in order to adjust its production schedules to take these shifts into account. Otherwise it may find itself with large inventories of unsaleable products while its partner may be in the difficult position of hastening to find4nalternativemarket for the amounts no longer required by the target market. In the turnkey-plant sector, partner enterpriese often discover that they derive totally different results from using the same local subcontractors. According to several western plant contractors interviewed, while the eastern partner obtained complete satisfaction from local suppliers, the western partner found little cooperation, forthcoming long delivery delays, and other shortcomings. This difference usually arises in the case of developing countries in which the western firm has no experience and the eastern enterprise may have been active for many years. Obviously in such cases it is recommended that the western firm rely on its partner's established links with local suppliers instead of attempting to deal with them on its own.Consumer goods make under cooperation arrangements and supplied to third markets often pass through a period of poor buyer acceptance, which is due to inappropriate or insufficient packaging. Since many branded consumer goods are distinguished from one another at the point of sale mainly by their packages ,the key to the successful introduction of a new product in a third market is correct assessement of consumer preferences. This assessment can best be carried out in the market-place by using up-to-date techniques for measuring buyer response to package shape, colour and presentation. Which partner should be responsible for conducting such testing, and。

Such people do not. However, accurately represent the 6.8m passengers who took this kind of holiday last year. Over the last few years the world cruise industry has concentrated on appealing to younger, less wealthy people giving them an experience more like a floating disco than the traditional quiet holiday on a luxury ship. Even families with young children are no longer so rare on cruise ships. Partly as a result, the number of passengers taking a cruise has increased by an average of 8.5% a year since 1990.Cruise Star is now the world’s largest cruise line. The other two major companies are Intersail and Seaways. Together these three carry nearly half the world's cruise passages and make almost all the industry’s profits. For the 30 or so smaller firms. Life is much tougher. That is because sheer size brings so many benefits to the large firms. They can negotiate bulk discounts on supplies such as food and fuel, and even, if they order enough of them, on ships. A secondary disadvantage for die smaller operators is that they cannot spread overheads such as marketing as broadly. A significant pan of the cost of sending people on a cruise happens before they go on board the ship. The three large companies between them spend more than £100m a year on TV advertising in America. They employ armies of salesmen. Delivering passengers to the ship is part of the package deal and. once again, volume means savings: Cruise Star is the biggest single buyer of airline tickets in America.Cruise Star has ten ships, with four more on order for delivery by 1999. Intersail is building at a similar rate, hoping to expand today's fleet often ships to 14 by 1998. Seaways will add three more ships to its present nine. The 30 ships on order throughout the industry will increase cruising capacity by 40% by 1998.Some analysts suspect that even the big companies will find it difficult to fill all those extra cabins. They make a comparison with the overcapacity in the airline market in the early 1990s, when aircraft ordered at a time of growth arrived during the' recession. And they point out that, after steady growth, the American market was flat in 1995, with firms offering discounts up to 30% in order to fill cabins. The big firms reckon that this pessimism is overdone. This year has started well. But if the industry's outlook ends up being rougher than it hopes, many smaller firms will face a choice: go for specialized business, go out of business, or get taken over by a larger business. Already more than 40 small companies offer an increasing variety of cruises, ranging from archaeological tours of the Black Sea to ecological cruises to the Galapagos Islands. This trend seems set to continue, although in fast-growing Asia, a few mid-sized firms may one day rise to challenge the top three. However, in more established markets, smaller firms are being squeezed out. For instance, Gentle Waves, which has debts of S850m, has already been approached by Cruise Star, who wanted to buy a majority share of the company. The negotiations came to nothing, but analysts think the7 w ill revive if Gentle Waves' problems continue.13 Cruises are becoming more popular with passengers whoA. want a quiet holiday.B. demand a high degree of luxury.C. want a family holiday.D. can afford to pay top prices.14 The main benefit the large firms have is that they canA. run large marketing departments.B. sell their tickets more cheaply.C. afford better quality, advertising.D. arrange to pa)' reduced prices.15 What problem do analysts think cruise companies may have?A. They will be dependent on the airline business.B. They will not be able to sell enough tickets.C. They will have to face a recession.D. They will not be able to offer discounts.16 What are small firms doing in order to stay in business?A. amalgamating with bigger companiesB. moving their base to AsiaC. offering more specialized types of cruisesD. joining together to form new companies17 Cruise Star didn't bus' a share in Gentle WavesA. but they might do so in the future.B. because its debts were too big.C. but they think they should have done.D. because it was the wrong size.18 which would be the best title for this text?A. Read this text about the problem of Barclays Bank. The New LookWhen Sir John Quinton, then chairman of Barclays Bank, was given his marching orders last April, Britain's biggest bank thought it had found the scapegoat for its sudden fall from grace and profits ,Andrew Buxton, the bank's managing director and an offspring of its founding families ,was a pointed chairman and chief executive ,with effect from January 1st of next year. It seemed a glorious victory for good business management. Is the problem solve do Certainly not.1. No sooner had Mr. Buxton been appointed chairman and chief executive than bigshareholders and quite a few board members began quietly to question his ability to do both jobs at once. Now ,weeks before he is due to move up ,the questions are louder. Many wish the bank had seized the opportunity Lasy April to separate the two top posts. And privately. Some wonder whether Mr. Buxton is the right man for either one. What started as a thoroughly British Whispering Campaign has assumed much bigger dimensions..2. Mr. Buxton has suffered it all ,but in truth he has no way out. After weeks of talking to shareholders and discussing with his non-executive directors ,he has accepted that Barclays will separate the top jobs sometimes in the future. Neither shareholders nor non-executive directors want to wait long. The producer or manufacturer made a product he wanted to sell. …example… Basically, selling the product would be accomplished by sales promotion, which included advertising and personal selling 8 Distribution consisted of transportation, storage, and related services such as financing, standardization and grading, and the related risks. The modern marketing concept encompasses all of the activities mentioned, but it is based on a different set of principles 9 In other words, goods should be produced only if they can be sold. Therefore, the producer should consider who is going to buy the product --- or what the market for the product is --- before production begins. 10Marketing now involves first deciding what the customer wants, and designing and producing a product that satisfies these wants at a profit to the company 11 .This is much more difficult since it involves human behavior 12 . Thus, demand and market forces are still an important aspect of modern marketing, but they are considered prior to the production process.A.It describes to the notion that production can be economically justified only by consumption.B.In addition to sales promotion, marketing also involved the physical distributionof the product to the places where it was actually sold.C.Marketing is as important in today’s economy as the production of goods and services.D.Production, on the other hand, is mostly an engineering problem.E.Instead of concentrating solely on production, the company must consider the desires of the consumer.F.This is very different from making a product and then thinking about how to sell it.G.Marketing was the task of figuring out how to sell the product.PART THREEQuestions 13-18Read the following article about a business technique called benchmarking from a business magazine and the questions on the opposite page. For question 13-18, mark one letter (A,B,C or D) on your Answer Sheet for the answer you choose. The expression 'benchmarking' has become one of the fashionable words in current management discussion. The Term first appeared m the United States in 1970s but has now gained world-wide. B u t w h at exactly does it mean and should your company be practicing it?One straightforward definition of benchmarking comes from Chris Teller. Managing director of a New Zealand-based consultancy firm specializing in this area. "Benchmarking involves learning about your own practices, learning about the best practices of other, and then making changes for improvement that will enable you to meet or heat the best in the world. " The essential element is not simply imitating what other companies do but being able to adapt the best of other firms’ practices to your own situation.Instead of aiming to improve only against previous performance and scores, companies can use benchmarking to inject an element of imagination and common sense into their search for progress. It is a process which forces companies to look closely at those activities which they may have been taking for granted and comparing them with the activities of other, world-beating companies Self-criticism is at the heart of the process, although in some cases this may upset managers who are reluctant to question long-established practices. The process of identifying 'best practice' in other companies does not just meanlooking closely at your competitors. It might also include studying companies which use similar processes to your own. Even though they are producing different goods. The point is to look at the process rather than the product. For example, Italian computer company Arita wanted to improve the quality of its technical manuals and handbooks. Instead of looking at manuals produced by other computer companies. Arita turned to a publisher of popular handbooks such as cookery books, railway timetables and car repair manuals. As Arita's Technical Director Claudio Benelli says, "All of these handbooks are communicating complex information in a simple way-exactly what we are aiming to do. And in many cases they succeed far better than an)' computer company."There is some disagreement between benchmarking specialists as to the best methods to follow when starting a benchmarking exercise in your firm. Everyone agrees that the process must have the full approval of senior management but that it is best carried out by a comparatively small team. Some consultants feel this should be as small as three people, but most favor a team of between five and eight, at least one of whom should have some prior knowledge of the benchmarking process. In practice this often means bringing in an outside consultant - at least at the beginning. Once the team is assembled, there can be anything from three to five formal stages in the process -different companies have developed different approaches - but, whatever the exact technique, benchmarking can only work if everyone in the company, from top to bottom, is committed to change.13.According to the writer, benchmarking must always involveA.changing your activities on the basis of new information.B.copying exactly what your competitors do.C.identifying the best company in your market.D.collaborating with other companies in the same field.14.Some managers ma)' resist benchmarking becauseA.it takes their activities for grantedB.it makes them examine the way they work.C.it makes others question their efficiency.D.it gives them a lot of extra work.15.What sort of companies should you compare yours with?A.those producing similar goodsB.those communicating most effectivelyC.1 hose using similar processesD.those leading the domestic market16.Arita found that a publishing company couldA.make more money than a computer firm.B.produce technical manuals for them.C.show them how to improve their own manuals.D.help them move into new markets.17.Benchmarking specialists agree that in order to succeed there must beA.a team of no more than three people.B.total support, from top managers.C.a fixed timetable for the process.D.an outside consultant in the team.18.What is the writer's purpose in writing this article?A.to recommend the process of benchmarkingB.to criticise firms that do not carry out benchmarkingC.to give factual information about benchmarkingD.to explain why benchmarking does not suit every firmPART FOURQuestions 19-33Read the following text about Thailand.Choose the best word from the lists on the opposite page to complete each gap.
