Tower of Babel

According to the biblical(《圣经》中的)account, a united humanity of the generations following the Great Flood, speaking a single language and migrating (移居)from the east, came to the land of Shinar, where they resolved to build a city with a tower “with its top in the heavens...lest (避免)we be scattered abroad upon the face of the Earth.” God came down to see what they did and said: “They are one people and have one language, and nothing will be withholden(阻止) from them which they purpose to do.” So God said, “Come, let us go down and confound(使混乱 )their speech." And so God scattered them upon the face of the Earth, and confused their languages, and they left off building the city, which was called Babel "because God there confounded the language of all the Earth."
By operating dogs throats ,they try to chang the structure of their throats.

The story revolves around the rescue of Tam Lin by his true love from the Queen of the Fairies(仙女).
Had I known but yesterday what I know today, I’d taken out your two gray eyes and put in eyes of clay; And had I known but yesterday you’d be no more my own. I’d have taken out your heart of flesh and put in one of stone. – Tam Lin
The book is narrated by Paul Iverson, a linguist who calls home one day to find out his wife is dead. He spends the remainder( 剩余部分) of the book trying to teach the only witness of her death, his dog Lorelei, to speak. Throughout the book, Paul uncovers more about his wife's last day and remembers events through their life they led up to it.
There are two clues in this book .
*Paul goes on a crusade (斗争)to teach Lorelei to speak, in order to clear up the mystery.
*The memory bewteen his wife and him from their acquaintance to the last day before his wife’s death.

Tam Lin is the hero of a legendary ballad ( 民谣)originating from the Scottish Borders.
Explanation of the novel's title The Dogs of Babel is an allusion to the Tower of Babel, the biblical story that explains the existence of different languages. Like the builders in the story, Paul is hampered(牵制) by the differences in communication between himself and Lorelei.

the ending
He suddenly realizes that Lexy has sent him a message through the rearrangement of books, a quote from the story Tam Lin. It is then Paul realizes what he has suspected is true, that Lexy committed suicide. Although he continues to mourn(悲伤) his wife‘s death, Paul has gotten by learning of its circumstances allow him to return to the world. He goes back to his job at the college, and stops his reclusive(隐退的) ways. The story ends on a happy note, but it is still clear Paul is grieving( 悲伤) for his wife.

Lexy had have a baby in her body. *heard Lexy's voice on a commercial for a Psychic Hotline(心灵咨询热线).
