I’m Jackie. Recently, I spilt (洒) a cup of coffee over my laptop by accident. Almost immediately, the screen went black and it stopped working. Soon I began to feel ▲ . I felt that I had lost a hand!
I also realised that my life had been under the control of technology for a long time! Almost every day, I used the Internet for at least four hours, whether to do my homework, learn news, go shopping online or communicate with my friends. Something else that has surprised me most is using a pen and paper for writing. I find that writing has become a little strange to me! I used to love writing, but in the last couple of years, I have become used to typing with my fingers. Surely technology has made our lives easier, but it also has destroyed something.
Since then, I’ve decided to use technology when I feel I really need to. Now I use my mobile phone less. Instead I write letters to my family and friends, taking time to really think about what I am saying to them. I’m not afraid of my life without the Internet any more. I’m glad about these small changes.

Researchers at Northwestern University in Illinois find that music training can help students become smarter. They also find that one year of music training doesn’t make a difference. Two years does.
They did a two-year study by providing free music lessons for some students from poor families at a high school. Let’s take a look at the results. Overall (总的来说), more than 50% of the school’s
students did not graduate (毕业). However, about 90% of the 44 students who took the free music lessons graduated and went to university.
Adelina Flores’s daughter is one of those 44 students. She said she wasn’t surprised by the results. Her daughter had already told her she was getting better at maths after receiving the music training and that her reading skills had improved a lot. Adelina Flores added, “She’s grown to be more confident.”
It’s amazing, isn’t it? However, there is one problem. Children have to actually play an instrument to get smarter. They can’t just listen to music. One of the researchers compared the difference to that of building up one’s body through exercise. She said, “You’re not going to become healthier just by watching sports.”
( )36. About ______ of the students who took the music training didn’t graduate.
A. 4
B. 14
C. 40
D. 44

B. listen to music as often as possible
C. learn to play an instrument for a year
D. play an instrument for at least two years
( )39. What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. Children from poor families can be smarter.
B. All students should take free music lessons.
C. People who are interested in music are smarter.
D. Music training can make children smarter.
( )40. Where does the passage probably come from?
A. A poster.
B. A magazine.
C. A storybook.
D. An advertisement.

A Portable Treat
Some people like a snack (小吃) that they can carry around. Donuts (油炸圈饼) are the perfect, portable treat!
No one knows who made the first donut. Some people think they came to America with Dutch settlers. The Dutch people loved sweets! They made the first cookies, cream pie, and cobblers in
America. They made donuts, too.
A sea captain named Hanson Gregory may have made the first donut. He was steering his ship during a rough storm. He had been eating a fried cake. Then a storm came. He needed both hands to steer. He also wanted to eat his little cake. Captain Hanson stuck the cake on a spoke (辐条) of the steering wheel. This made the very first donut hole! People liked the idea of a hole in the middle of their fried cakes. Sometimes the centre wasn’t cooked.
Donuts got better. A man named John Blodell made a donut cutter. People were happy. Donuts always looked round and perfect! Later, big machines popped out thousands of donuts. They were all perfect!
The American word “donut” was first used by a store called Dunkin’ Donuts. Other countries spell the word “doughnut”. People all over the world love donuts. Ita lian donuts are called zeppoles. Polish donuts are called paczkis. German donuts are called “berliners”.
There are many other kinds of stuffed donuts. Some are filled with jelly. Others have custard cream in the middle. September 14 is National Cream-Filled Donut Day! Donuts can have vanilla, chocolate, or banana cream inside.
So have a donut! It’s the perfect, portable snack! Just don’t eat too many, or your middle will fill out like a donut.

Hello, everyone,
My name is Li Hua. I’m from Class Two, Grade Three. The subject of my speech is “Advantages of riding bicycles”.
In my opinion, riding bicycles is a great activity. For one thing, it’s good for our health. Riding bicycles is a good way to build up our body. It can help us to lose weight and stay healthy. For an other, it helps to save the environment. As everyone knows, riding bicycles doesn’t cause air pollution or noise pollution.
So I’d like to advise all of you to bike to school instead of using cars.
That’s all. Thank you very much!。
