Christmas

The name Christmas is short for “Christ\'s mass". a mass is a kind of church service. Christmas is a religious festival which is celebrated on December 25. It is on that day that we celebrate to commemorate the birthday of Jesus.

Christmas usually continues nearly for a month. But preparation begins a few weeks ahead of Christmas. People buy a variety of things in order to decorate the houses, churches and offices fascinatingly. The things that they should prepare may be the colorful lights, Christmas tree, candles, toys, stocking, stars and small presents to mark the religious festival in a grand way. What’s more, delicious food and traditional dishes are playing an important role on Christmas. Eating turkey is popular in the Unite States from 1620. British Christmas dinner is roasted goose. Other food may include Christmas fruit cake, roasted potatoes, ham, gingersnap followed by Christmas pudding. However, in recent years some new Christmas food trends have appeared.

Christmas is also a family celebration. Every members of the family gather to eat, put up and decorate the Christmas tree, play games then watch the special Christmas programmes on TV. When the time comes, they will exchange gifts, go to parties, or just stay at home with their families and so on. Some family members will also go to a Christmas church service.

A story:

Although everyone enjoys Christmas Day, it is particularly enjoyed by children, who get very excited because of the presents they know they are going to receive. Small children believe that their presents are brought by Santa Claus. We also call him Father Christmas. He is a kind of old man who, the children are told, lives at the North Pole. He travels through the sky on a sleigh(雪撬) which is pulled by reindeers(驯鹿) and loaded with presents. Stopping on the roof of houses, he enters by climbing the chimney(烟囱).When small children go to bed on Christmas Eve, they hang a stocking at the end of their beds. Their parents warn them not to try to look at Santa Claus, or he will not leave them anything. When they wake, they find their stockings filled with presents. Children are very excited on Christmas morning and always wake up early.
