When I was a little girl, I was obsessed with playing Math 24 with my father, who often had fun with seeing me scratch my head trying to get a 24 from those four cards. To me at that time, figures are a bridge between my body and my mind. I could genuinely feel my mind operating when I stared at the figures and it felt like we shared the pleasure when I worked it out. Along with my growing up, this “ thing ” with figures did not fade away. When I heard from my advisor that the Treasure of 11th Grade would take charge of raising funds for our senior trip, I immediately took part in the election. Eventually I won the position. I learned that traditionally selling candies during the basketball league season was the major source of fund raising. At the first several days, I followed the same rule. However I found that the figure in my account book was not that satisfying for the profit margin of selling candies was quite small. Thinking for a while, I did a market research on campus with other students through which I found that cookies, popcorns and ice-creams were also popular and we could make more money from them. In the next week, the new product portfolio was on trial and it turned out to be a success. We managed to increase our profit by 25%. I could not describe how exciting I was when I saw that number in my account book. Yet I updated that figure again before long. With my magic calculation, I found that selling those snacks during breaks in the afternoon was more profitable and efficient than selling them only during basketball games and major holidays. Changing the sales time brought us more money. And at the end of the year, the figure in my account book stopped at $ 2000! Receiving praises from teachers and students, I knew clearly that the pleasure I felt mostly came from dealing with those figures. At that time, I had made up my mind to take accounting as my major.
