九年级阅读专练(2)

Have you ever trained your brain? Now there are some new suggestions, such as eating dark chocolate and having cold meat for breakfast. You should also avoid (避免) watching soap operas, spending time with people who complain or follow fat-free diets, according to a new book on getting “brain-fit”.

Many of the suggestions in Teach Yourself Training Your Brain are surprising. The book says to read out loud while holding a baby. Writers Terry Horne and Simon Wootton say their advice is from the latest research by experts around the world.

“For years we have thought our brain capability (能力) is decided by our genes (基因). But it’s now clear that it depends on our lifestyle. What we eat and drink, how we learn at school and what type of feelings we have are all important,” said Horne.

The book talks about the most up-to-date thinking in science about how diet, the environment, stress and other sides of modern life affect our brain capacity. It also offers advice and exercises. The book comes as more and more people are spending money on books, DVDs and computer games, which say to improve their brain’s capability.

Horne believes that people need to make changes to their lifestyles to increase their brain capacity. Happiness, confidence and an optimistic nature help the brain, he added.

“So mix with people who make you laugh, or share the same interests as you. And avoid people who complain,” said Horne. “People who are negative will make you sad, which means you won’t achieve things.”

It was a cold winter. The wind blew all night and the snow was blinding. When morning came, my three children and I got up and made our way to the windows facing north. The wind blew hard from the west, and the snow made it hard for us to see the henhouse (鸡舍).

As we looked out of the window, we saw that the henhouse was gone. Our three hens had been blown away by the cold wind. Suddenly I saw all three chickens sat around the edge of a white bucket (桶). I couldn’t believe my eyes! How was this strong win d not blowing them into the field beyond?

I pulled on my husband Roger’s long snow pants and heavy winter coat. I wrapped a scarf around my neck and stuck my feet into Roger’s very large boots (靴子).

I shouted at the wind as it blew. My children stared out the window into the large white sea of snow, their eyes peeled for any sign of movement. This wind was strong. Getting to the white, almost invisible (看不见的) bucket was difficult.

As the snow circled around me, I made my way to the soft cluck-cluck-cluck sound my hens always made. When I reached them, I saw that their little feet were holding on to the edge of the bucket, heads bent forward and away from the wind.

I quickly and gently lifted each hen and put it carefully into the warm inside my warm coat. Then I began the freezing walk back. One by one I laid my chickens on the cold floor, and they began to cluck softly.

As I shut the doors, my eyes went directly to the window where my children were watching. They jumped up and down cheer ing, and so did I! I wasn’t some dragon slayer (屠龙者) from a story. I was simply a mom, but the look on my children’s faces told me that they thought I was a hero mom.

4. This article is mainly written to tell us ______.

A. that courage is the ability to be brave

B. how the author saved the chickens with difficulty

C. that every mother is a hero in her children’s eyes

D. how difficult it is to live in bad conditions

5. The author found the chickens outside ______.

A. by searching for the white bucket

B. by going north

C. by following the sound of the hens

D. by searching for the henhouse

6. What can be inferred(推断) from the last two paragraphs?

A. The children’s faces told us their mother was a hero.

B. The children watched their mother all the way.

C. The author wanted to be the dragon slayer.

D. The author thought herself very brave.

答案: 4. B 5. C 6. B
