Benjamin Franklin, whose picture is on the US100-dollar note, was appointed to prepare the Declaration that was eventually signed by the other founding fathers.Franklin was born in 1706 in Boston to a soap maker named Josiah Franklin. His father could not afford full schooling for all his children, but Benjamin loved books and worked in his elder brother's printing business before starting a newspaper called the Pennsylvania Gazette in 1729. He wrote and drew cartoons for the newspaper. In addition, he worked to improve living conditions in the city: introducing street lights, cleaning the roads and building libraries. In the 1740s, Franklin retired from his newspaper and turned to science with great success. He was a very smart man and his work on electricity, including the "kite experiment" which confirmed the nature of lightning, made him famous throughout the world.Franklin earned the title of the “First American" for his efforts to unite the 13 American states, and to win their independence. This part of the story starts in London. He was sent to the city to persuade the British to treat the American states more fairly. It was here that he began interacting with important political thinkers and activists of the time and developing his own political ideas.Following his return to America in 1761 he became much more active in American politics and in the battle against British rule. After the United States of America was established, Franklin held several important positions such as the first United States Postmaster General, Ambassador to France and President of Pennsylvania. He is also famous today for his wise sayings, including "a penny saved is a penny earned” and “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".24. What is the article mainly about?A. We must get used to computers that talk back.Last year, investment bank Deep Ventures attracted much media attention when it announced that it had appointed an AI computer to its board of directors to help make important business decisions. What actually happened was that the company used a program called VITAL to analyse potential investments (授资) in different businesses. But VITAL doesn't attend board meetings or vote - it's just a program. While it's not quite the evil robot we see in science fiction movies, it shows us how far computers and AI have advanced.Soon AI systems will be driving our vehicles, interpreting our facial expressions as we perform complex tasks, translating our voices into different languages and building other machines for us in factories around the world. But they won't look like us or pretend to be human. In the new film Ex Machina, a computer scientist is asked to assess whether a beautiful human-looking robot called Ava has human intelligence. I won't spoil the film for you, but it occurred to me that one of the reasons we believe other human beings are conscious and have intelligence is that we're told they are all .the time. Indeed, if you stopped believing other people have minds, you would quickly find yourself unable to function in the world.Google's Eric Schmidt argues that we shouldn't worry about AI, and that we need instead to redesign our education systems so that we learn how to get on with the machines. As powerful computer-based intelligences continue developing, we must let go of the belief that only humans have intelligence and consciousness. Just as we have accepted the reality that the self-awareness that makes minds possible exists within the animal world, we may soon accept that it can also exist within the machine world.28. According to Professor Stephen Hawking, human beings .A. may be endangered by strong AIB. are still more intelligent than machinesC. will benefit greatly from the advances in AID. will never be able to build a strong AI system29. According to Paragraph 2, VITAL can .A. attend board meetings to voteB. make final decisions for the bankC. attract more investments to the bankD. assess the value of different businesses30. The author predicts that AI machines will soon be able to .A. control people's facial expressionsB. construct other intelligent machinesC. have a human-like physical appearanceD. change people's speeches into different languages31. Which of the following would the author most probably agree with?A. It is too late to stop the danger of artificial intelligence. . .B. Humans should learn to live with intelligent machines.C. Intelligent machines will eventually control the world.D. Only humans can have intelligence and consciousness.Mature-age university students are annoying, I know. I understand that when you're 18 or 19, and already know everything, there's no need to do the readings or show up prepared for class. I also understand that there are these old people in class who should be doing other things——maybe retiring, or gardening in the backyard. They are eagerly asking questions (or worse, answering them) and generally loud.I understand because I used to be one of them. I dropped out of high school in Year 11 and after playing guitar in a band for a few years, I spent the next ten years working different jobs. Then a friend, who thought I was wasting my life, suggested I enroll at his university. Although afraid, I eventually took a university preparation course and a year later became a 35-year-old university freshman.Like many mature-age students, after completing my degree, I continued studying and eventually attained my PhD.Now I'm a lecturer at Toronto University in Canada. In fact, I have just finished preparing a group of mature-age students to annoy next year's young first years. My students come from many different backgrounds. But they all share an enthusiasm for knowledge and learning.I know they are ridiculous and show up to class with folders full of readings, minds overflowing with ideas and concepts they want to discuss. I was the same. But, contrary to the stereotype of the annoying mature-age students occupying the airtime in class, most don't want to control the discussion. They're likely to be waiting, counting away the seconds silently in the hope that someone will want to talk about all of these amazing ideas we're learning about. Only after waiting for younger voices to speak. ( but which often remain silent) do they begin talking.Speaking for myself, I love students who come prepared and ready to discuss stuff. So let's celebrate all of those “annoying” mature-age students.32. According to the article, a mature-age student is a person .A. who behaves like an adultB . studying for a higher degreeC. not yet qualified to enter universityD. who starts university at an older age33. In the first paragraph, the author .A. shows that he is opposed to mature-age studentsB. describes the problems mature-age students createC. makes fun of the attitude held by many young students .D. explains why many teachers dislike mature-age students .34. What does the underlined word "them" in Paragraph 2 refer to?A. Retired people.B. Early high school leavers.C. Mature-age university students.D. University students aged below 20.35. Why do mature-age students often wait before speaking in class?A. They are not very familiar with the topic being discussed.B. They want to give the younger 'students more chances to speak.C. They lack the ability to give their opinions. . .D. They are more interested in hearing others' opinions. .第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AGive it five minutesI used to be a hothead. Whenever anyone said anything, I’d think of a way to disagree. I’d push back hard if something didn’t fit my world-view.It’s like I had to be first with an opinion — as if being first meant something. But what it really meant was that I wasn’t thinking hard enough about the problem. The faster you re act, the less you think. Not always, but often. This came to a head back in 2007. I was speaking at the Business Innovation Factory conference in Providence, RI. So was Richard Saul Wurman. After my talk Richard came up to introduce himself and compliment my talk. That was very generous of him. He certainly didn’t have to do that. And what did I do? I pushed back at him about the talk he gave. While he was making his points on stage, I was taking an inventory of the things I didn’t agree with. And when pres ented with an opportunity to speak with him, I quickly pushed back at some of his ideas. I must have seemed like such an asshole. His response changed my life. It was a simple thing. He said “Man, give it five minutes.” I asked him what he meant by that? H e said, it’s fine to disagree, it’s fine to push back, it’s great to have strong opinions and beliefs, but give my ideas some time to set in before you’re sure you want to argue against them. “Five minutes” represented “think”, not react. He was totally ri ght. I came into the discussion looking to prove something, not learn something. This was a big moment for me.Richard has spent his career thinking about these problems. He’s given it 30 years. And I gaveit just a few minutes. Now, certainly he can be wr ong and I could be right, but it’s better to think deeply about something first before being so certain you’re right. There’s also a difference between asking questions and pushing back. Pushing back means you already think you know. Asking questions means you want to know. Ask more questions.Learning to think first rather than react quick is a life-long pursuit. It’s tough. I still get hot sometimes when I shouldn’t. But I’m really enjoying all the benefits of getting better. If you aren’t sure why this i s important, think about this quote from Jonathan Ive regarding Steve Jobs’ reverence(respect) for ideas:And just as Steve loved ideas, and loved making stuff, he treated the process of creativity with a rare and a wonderful reverence. You see, I think he better than anyone understood that while ideas ultimately can be so powerful, they begin as fragile, barely formed thoughts, so easily missed, so easily compromised, so easily just squished. That’s deep. Ideas are fragile. They often start powerless. They’re barely there, so easy to ignore or skip or miss. There are two things in this world that take no skill: 1. Spending other people’s money and 2. Dismissing an idea.Dismissing an idea is so easy because it doesn’t involve any work. You can scoff at it. You can ignore it. You can puff some smoke at it. That’s easy. The hard thing to do is protect it, think about it, let it marinate, explore it, riff on it, and try it. The right idea could start out life as the wrong idea.So next time you hear something, or someone, talk about an idea, pitch an idea, or suggest an idea, give it five minutes. Think about it a little bit before pushing back, before saying it’s too hard or it’s too much work. Those things may be true, but there may be another truth in there too: It may be worth it.1. Which of the following best describes the word hothead from the first paragraph?A. SupportiveB. FastC. NervousD. Aggressive2. What did the author do while Richard was talking in the business conference?A. He kept notes for things that he did not agree with.B. He pushed Richard and beat him.C. He was preparing for his own speech.D. He was getting ready to compliment him.3. Which of the following is the reason for quoting Jonathan Ive?A. The author thinks Steve Jobs is the best when it comes to creativity.B. The author is inspired by Steve Job's attitude towards new ideas.C. The author respects Steve Job because he is creative and he likes ideas.D. The author thinks Steve Job has ideas that are strong and powerful and are hard to miss.4. What is the core argument that the author put forward?A. Dismissing ideas is an effortless thing to do so you should always protect ideas carefully.B. The right idea always starts from a wrong idea and you need to protect it from beingdismissed.C. One should be careful when it comes to judge a new idea.D. Every idea, whether powerful or fragile, deserves five minutesBBats are impressive creatures. They are known to carry dangerous diseases like SARS without getting sick.So researchers wanted to know: How do bats fight off so many deadly diseases? Learning their secret could help doctors better treat humans who have these diseases, therefore saving millions of lives. To solve this problem, a team of researchers from Australia and China analyzed bat DNA. The scientists studied two kinds of bats—the Australian megabat, known as the flying fox, and the Chinese microbat. The scientists then arranged the bat genome (基因组) in order by comparing their DNA.The researchers now think that the special immunity (免疫性) to illness that bats have may be connected to their ability to fly.Bats are the only mammals (哺乳动物) that can truly fly. Flying uses up a lot of energy. The energy burned for flying produces something in the animal called free radicals (自由基). Free radicals can damage DNA and lead to diseases such as cancer. However, bats are not affected by free radicals produced during flight. The reason is that bats carry special genes to repair any damaged DNA.Scientists th ink that because bats fly and produce free radicals, they’ve evolved to carry genes that shaped their special immune system.“We’re thinking that the evolution of flight led to a sort of effect, influencing not only the immune system but also things like a ging and cancer,” says Chris Cowled, of the Australian Animal Health Laboratory. “We think we’ve really found something special.”Researchers believe that this discovery might one day be key to helping humans fight diseases such as cancer that attack the immune system and damage DNA.5. What’s true about bats according to the passage?A. They carry many deadly diseases like SARS so it’s easy for them to get sick.B. Bats are the only animals that can tell directions easily.C. Bats are among the mammals that can truly fly.D. Researchers studied bats to help save people.6. According to researchers, bats can fight off many deadly diseases mainly because ________.A. they have developed special immune system through evolutionB. they are able to fly, which burns a lot of energyC. free radicals in their bodies can damage DNA and cause diseasesD. they carry no special genes to repair damaged DNA7. The passage is mainly about ________.A. bats and dangerous diseasesB. bats and their special immune systemC. free radicals and immune systemD. ways to cure cancerCThroughout history there have always been people who can make other people laugh. Early clowns (小丑) often both annoyed and delighted audiences with their comments and songs. They were not the si lent performers seen in today’s circus rings (马戏场). Clowns lost their voices when the large three-ring circuses made it impossible for the audience to hear them.Circus clowns give performances in various ways. Walk-around clowns use an animal or something as part of their performance. A carpet clown moves around, talking with the audience and performing while the acts change in the rings. Then there are acrobatic clowns, riding clowns, juggling clowns and others.Everything a clown does looks easy, but it’s not. Making people laugh can be hard work. Clowns must be in good physical condition to prevent injuries. Each funny move is carefully timed and well-practiced. Most clowns have also been trained as acrobats, jugglers or aerial artists, and many include such skills into their acts.Generally, there are three categories of circus clowns—whiteface, auguste and character. Each has a special makeup style and costume. Each has a typical act as well. The neat whiteface is usually a strict, in-charge character who sets up the punch line (the point of a joke) for the joke with a partner who is typically an auguste. His facial features are neatly detailed in red or black, and his costumes look so loose with a ruffle around the neck.Auguste clown got his name from a German nickname for someone who is clumsy. The auguste wears light-colored makeup, but white is used around the mouth and eyes, and there’s a big red nose. This clown performs a great deal of humor. An oversized suit or baggy trousers allow free movement for all the clumsy acts. He also wears big shoes.Character clowns perform as different personalities—cowboys, grandmothers or concert conductors. The most famous character clown, however, is the tramp. Tramps wear different styles of makeup and torn costumes. Some tramp clowns are happy-go-lucky. Others are extremely sad. Still others act like gentlemen who just happen to be out of money.Clowns have a long and interesting history and use serious techniques. However, the children and adults at the cir cus don’t need to know these facts to get ready for fun when they hear “Bring in the clowns!”8. According to the Paragraph 1, why did clowns lose their voices?A. Because they wanted to avoid annoying audiences.B. Because there were only a few audiences in the ring.C. Because audiences often spoke louder than clowns.D. Because they could not be heard in the three-ring circuses.9. If a clown is dressed in baggy clothing, which type of clown does he belong to?A. The auguste or the whitefaceB. The whiteface or the characterC. The auguste or the characterD. The riding clown or the tramp10. What makes the character clowns different?A. He plays a leading role in performances.B. He wears more attractive make-up.C. He performs in a more funny way.D. He acts in different characters.11. What is the passage mainly about?A. The long history of clowns.B. Varied opinions on clowns.C. Some basic facts about clowns.D. Three different types of clowns.DCan you be too beautiful? It is hardly a problem that most of us have to bother — as much as we might like to dream that it were the case.Yet the blessings and curses of beauty have been a long-standing interest in psychology. Do those blessed with shiny faces and an attractive body live in a cloud of appreciation — or does it sometimes pay to be ordinary?Combing through decades of findings, social psychologists Lisa Slattery Walker and Tonya Frevert at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte have reviewed all the evidence to date and their conclusions are not what you might expect. At the most basic level, beauty might be thought to carry a kind of halo(光环) around it; we see that someone has one good quality, and by association, our deep mind may assume that they have other good ones too.Even in the courts, a pleasing appearance can work its magic. Attractive criminals are likely to get less strict sentences, or to escape punishment entirely; attractive plaintiffs(原告), meanwhile, are more likely to win their case and get bigger financial settlements. “It’s an effect seen everywhere,” says Walker. But if beauty pays in most circumstances, there are still situations where it can have opposite results. While attractive men may be considered better leaders, for instance, hidden sexist prejudices(偏见) can work against attractive women, making them less likely to be hired for high-level jobs that require power. And as you might expect, good-looking people of both sexes run into envy — one study found that if you are interviewed by someone of the same sex, they may be less likely to employ you if they judge that you are more attractive than they are.More worryingly, being beautiful or handsome could harm your medical care. We tend to link good looks to health, meaning that illnesses are often taken less seriously when they affect the good-looking. When treating people for pain, for instance, doctors tend to take less care over the more attractive people. And the bubble of beauty can be a somewhat lonely place. One study in 1975, for instance, found that people tend to move further away from a beautiful woman on the pathway — perhaps as amark of respect, but still making interaction more distant. “Attractiveness can convey more power over visible space —but that in turn can make others feel they can’t approach that person,” says Frevert. Interestingly, the online dating website OKCupid recently reported that people with the most beautiful pictures are less likely to find dates than those with less perfect pictures.Ultimately, Frevert points out that focusing too much on your appearance can itself be harmful if it creates stress and anxiety —even for those already blessed with good looks. “If you are crazy about attractiveness, it may affect your experience and interactions,” she says. It’s an outdated saying, but no amount of beauty can make up for a bad personality. As the writer Dorothy Parker put it so elegantly: “Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone.”12. From paragraph 1, we can learn that _______.A. some may be bothered by their unattractive appearanceB. most people are not afraid of being too beautifulC. we might always dream about being bothered by othersD. being too beautiful can be a problem bothering everyone13. Which is the benefit for beautiful people?A. An attractive plaintiff has more chances to get away with punishment.B. Women with pleasing appearance will always be considered as better leaders.C. Good-looking people are often regarded as having many good qualities.D. Beautiful criminals are more likely to persuade the judge and win the case.14. What can be inferred from OKCupid’s finding?A. People with perfect pictures will find dates sooner or later.B. Less attractive women are lonely because of their appearances.C. We may feel more excited to approach those with attractive appearances.D. Don’t use perfect pictures when trying to find dates online.15. What might be the best title for the passage?A. Negative Sides of BeautyB. Sexist PrejudiceC. Blessed with BeautyD. Beauty vs Ugliness第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

what our program is about,"she says,"I answer them with one word:hope".Each year, the MAP offers youth art programs and workshops. Some onetime graffitiwriters even help paint MAP murals. The MAP's work, says Golden,is all about developing a sense of community (社区).When a neighborhood requests a mural, the MAP works with the people there to develop a message. Some messages have been"Safe Streets","Love and Care",and"Peace Walk".The MAP receives up to 50requests for murals each week.Last year, the workers painted 140murals."The making of a mural enters people's collective memory as an strange, new dilemma faces Chinese pedestrians:should you help an elderly person who has fallen into the street? The answer seems simple.Your conscience forces you to help someone in danger. But many Chinese are discovering that some of these injured people are scammers. They accuse good Samaritans(好心人)of having knocked them over in the first place, and they file complaints in hopes of receiving large amounts of compensation. There are frequent reports on such incidents and following disputes. On Sept 8,a new case happened in Huainan,Anhui province.Yuan Chen,a 20-year-old college student from Huainan Normal University, claimed that she helped an injured elderly woman on the street. But the woman's family has demanded that Yuan take full responsibilities for the injuries.Since the incident happened in the security cameras'blind spot, both sides are looking for witnesses to clear their names. The local police department is also investigating the case. But how can you possibly solve a case like this, where the only evidence comes from two conflicting viewpoints?"This kind of cases should follow the principle of‘the burden of proof lies with the person making the claim',"Ye Lin,a law professor from Renmin University of China, told China Central Television. The burden of proof means the collection of proof or evidence. In civil cases,"if you accuse someone of causing you harm or losses, you should collect convincing proof to back your claim,"said Ye."If you cannot do that, the law will not be able to support your claim."The law may not resolve all the problems, however. Some elderly people choose to blackmail (敲诈)their helpers because they do not have health insurance. To prevent this, the country needs to put in place a better social security net.12.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the first paragraph?______A.Conscience is troublesome because it compels you to help someone who will set you up in return.B.Sometimes the warm-hearted are wrongly accused of having knocked others over.C.It is advisable for Chinese people to turn a blind eye to someone in danger.D.There's no doubt that the elderly usually fell down on purpose to claim compensation.13.What does the sentence in paragraph 3"both sides are looking for witnesses to clear their names"mean?______A.Both sides are in search of someone who can call out their names.B.Both sides are in search of evidence that can clarify their opinions.C.Both sides are in search of evidence that can wash away their crimes.D.Both sides are in search of someone who can prove they are telling the truth.14.What can we infer from Ye Lin,the law professor's words?______A.Ye Lin thinks it is Yuan Chen who is responsible for gathering proof.B.In civil cases, the accused should collect proof as well to reject the claim.C.The principle regards the accused as innocent until convincing proof can be provided.D.Since it is hard to collect convincing proof, both sides should take on the responsibility.15.What is most likely to be written in the paragraph that follows?______A.To make comments on this hot social phenomenon.B.To emphasize the necessity of an improved social security system.C.To analyze deep causes of the elderly blackmailing their helpers.D.To illustrate the impact brought about by the blackmail on our society.【答案】【小题1】B 【小题2】D 【小题3】C 【小题4】B【解析】32.B 细节理解题.根据第一段But many Chinese are discovering that some of these injured people are scammers. They accuse good Samaritans(好心人)of having knocked them over in the first place, and they file complaints in hopes of receiving large amounts of compensation.可知很多国人发现一些伤者其实是骗子.他们讹诈好心人把自己撞倒,倒打一耙,进而索取高额赔偿.由此推知,有时热心人被错误地指责为把别人撞倒在地上.故选B.33.D 句意辨析题.根据第三段Since the incident happened in the security cameras'blind spot, both sides are looking for witnesses to clear their names. The local police department is also investigating the case. But how can you possibly solve a case like this, where the only evidence comes from two conflicting viewpoints?可知由于事故发生在监控盲区,双发都在寻找证人.当地公安局也在调查该事件.不过在这种两方各执一词,证据也只是双方证词的情况下,如何解决纠纷?由此推知,"both sides are looking for witnesses to clear their names"的意思是"双方都在寻找能证明他们说真话的人".故选D.34.C 细节推理题.根据倒数第二段In civil cases,"if you accuse someone of causing you harm or losses, you should collect convincing proof to back your claim,"said Ye."If you cannot do that, the law will not be able to support your claim." 故选C.35.B 理解推断题. They can only be applied for onlineD. They can be purchased at the event location.BIn 1800, only three percent of the world's population lived in cities. Only one city —Beijing —had a population of over a million. Most people lived in rural areas, and never saw a city in their lives. In 1900, just a hundred years later, roughly 150 million people lived in cities, and the world’s ten largest cities all had populations exceeding one million. By 2000, the number of city dwellers exceeded three billion; and in 2008, the world's population crossed a tipping point — more than half of the people on Earth lived in cities. By 2050, that could increase to over two-thirds. Clearly, humans have become an urban species. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many people viewed cities negatively — crowded, dirty environments full of disease and crime. They feared that as cities got bigger, living conditions would worsen. In recent decades, however, attitudes have changed. Many experts now think urbanization (城市化) is good news, offering solutions to the problems of Earth’s growing population.Harvard economist Edward Glaeser, author of The Victory of the Cir, is one such person. Glaeser argues that cities are very productive because “the absence of space between people” reduces the cost of transporting goods, people, and ideas. While the flow of goods has always been important to cities, what is most important today is the flow of ideas. Successful cities enable people to learn from each other easily, and attract and reward smart people with higher wages.Another urbanization supporter is environmentalist Stewart Brand. Brand believes cities help the environment because they allow haft of the world’s population to live on about four percent of the land. T his leaves more space for open country, such as farmland. City dwellers also have less impact per person on the environment than people in the countryside. Their roads, sewers, and power lines need fewer resources to build and operate. City apartments require less energy to heat, cool, and light. Most importantly, people in cities drive less so they produce fewer greenhouse gases per person. So it’s a mistake to see urbanization as evil; it’s a natural part of development. The challenge is how to manage the growth.4. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?A. The history of modern cities.B. Changes taking place within cities.C. How cities have grown over time.D. Why modern cities are changing.5. How have experts’ attitudes towards cities changed in recent decades?A. They now view the weaknesses as strengths.B. They no longer see city-riving as attractive.C. They accept city life in spite of its problems.D. They think city-riving provides more benefits.6. Which of the following would Edward Glaeser agree with?A. Cities provide more economic opportunities.B. City people get along better with each other.C. Over-crowded cities result in problems.D. Cities limit the flow of ideas.7. According to Paragraph 4, what would be the result of moving people out of cities?A. Economic production would be reduced.B. There would be less farmland available.C. People would travel less frequently.D. House values would fall greatly.CIt was December 25, 1914, only 5 months into World War I. German, British, and French soldiers, already sick and tired of the senseless killing, disobeyed their superiors and started socialising with “the enemy” along two-thirds of the Western Front.German troops held up Christmas trees with signs, “Merry Christmas”. Thousands of troops ran across the battlefields covered with dead bodies. They sang Christmas songs, exchanged photographs of loved ones back home, shared food and even played football. Soldiers hugged men they had been trying to kill a few short hours before. They agreed to warn each other if their officers forced them to fire their weapons, and to aim high.Fear ran through the military leaders on both sides. They felt that their power was being challenged: soldiers declaring their brotherhood with each other and refusing to fight. Generals declared this unexpected peacemaking illegal and said that participating soldiers would face a military court. Those found guilty would be imprisoned or even shot. By March 1915 the socialising movement had been destroyed and the killing machine was back in full operation. Over the next three years more than fifteen million people died in the war.Not many people have heard the story of the Christmas Truce (休战). On Christmas Day, 1988, a local radio host in Bos ton played “Christmas in the Trenches”, a song about the Christmas Truce, several times and was stunned by his listeners’ response. Thousands of people called in, praising the song, with many moved to tears by the amazing events it described. You can probably guess why the callers were in tears. The Christmas Truce story goes against most of what we have been taught about people. It lets us see the world as it can be and says, “This really happened once.” It shows us the potential we have as humans, and contradicts all of those TV and newspaper stories that tell us how mean and heartless people are. It is like hearing that our deepest wishes really are true: the world really can be different.8. The soldiers began socialising with the enemy because ________.A. they couldn't bear the meaningless killingB. it was the best way to avoid being killedC. they feared that they would be caughtD. their enemies were from similar backgrounds9. How did the generals finally put an end to the soldiers’ socialisi ng?A. They sent the soldiers’ loved ones to prison.B. They moved the two groups of soldiers further apart.C. They increased the number of officers to control the soldiers.D. They warned the soldiers that they would face severe punishment.10. The u nderlined word “stunned” in Paragraph 4 most probably means ________.A. satisfiedB. shockedC. amusedD. confused11. The author uses the story of the soldiers to imply that human beings ________.A. are not trustworthy under stressB. are naturally aggressive and war-likeC. are basically caring and kindheartedD. will always do what is in their own self-interestDEarlier this year, the social media website Facebook announced that it would work with several news organisations — including The New York Times, The Guardian, and the BBC — to place news stories directly into users’ personal Facebook webpage.Stories published using Facebook Instant will load more quickly and keep the style of the original publisher, who will keep all the advertising income the stories earn — at least for now. The deal shows how important social, media has become to news organisations, and is a clear sign of how the world of news is changing — and has been for a while. When Google News began in 2002, many saw it as the death of the newspaper. It had no human editor. Instead Google used, and still uses, a secret computer program that selects and displays news stories according to the reader’s personal interests. More recently, Associated Press and Yahoo! have bee n punishing computer-written articles. Both use special software to automatically produce stories about company financial results and sports reports — areas where the quality of writing is felt to be of secondary importance to the accuracy of the data.Should we be worried about such developments? I think we should. One concern is that facebook, Google and other social media websites see journalism as a sideline, a way of putting people in front of advertisements. It isn’t their primary function — so if it stops making them lots of money, they're likely to stop doing it.There’s also a concern that computer-written articles are not actually journalism at all, because what a human news team produces is actually quite complex. A well-written news story puts information in context, offers a voiceto each side of an argument and brings the public new knowledge.Though economics and speed of delivery mean readers will probably choose a computer-written story over a carefully shaped article — at least for daily news — I don't think the computers will be writing any in-depth articles for a while yet.12. What is the main purpose of the article?A. To report on a new computer service offered by Facebook..B. To advise readers against reading computer-written news.C. To express concern about recent trends in online news.D. To describe the process of online news reporting.13. Computer-written news reports have so far focused on sports and finance because ________.A. these are the most popular topics for online readersB. there are fewer journalists specialising in these areasC. information on these topics is more easily availableD. writing style is less important than accuracy in these areas14. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A. Journalism.B. Advertising.C. Facebook.D. Business.15. In Paragraph 4, which of the following is mentioned as a characteristic of a well-written news article?A. The information presented is up-to-date.B. The author's opinion is clear.C. Different views on the topic are presented.D. The language used is vivid.第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分l0分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Prisoners have to earn the right to attend the course and they work hard to get in.One reason why the course is so popular is that many prisoners find it easier to connect with animals than with people, because animals don’t judge them. They trust animals in ways they don’t with humans.Yet, they hold a misunderstanding of how animals treat one another. Many admit that their own “animal behavior” is what got them into trouble in the first place. I teach that though there is competition and aggression in the animal kingdom, there is also a lot of cooperation, and sympathy. Many of the students want to build healthy relationships, and they find that the class helps them. I use examples of the social behavior of group-living animals such as wolves as a model for developing and maintaining(维持) friendships among people who must work together for their own good and also for the good of the group. It’s clear that science inspires the students here and it also gives them hope. I know some students have gone back into education after their being set free while others have gone to work for humane societies or contributed time and money to conservation organizations. One went on to receive a master’s degree in nature writing.Science and humane education help the prisoners connect with values that they otherwise would at have done. It opens the door to understanding, trust, cooperation and hope. There’s a large population of people to whom science could mean a lot, if only they could have access to it. The class helps me, too. I get as much out of it as the students and it has made me a better teacher.25. The author’s course is welcomed by the prisoners because___A. they have to earn the right to attend itB. they are curious about animals kingdomC. they feel it easier to get along with animalsD. they are more familiar with animal behavior26. There were no art directors, no stylists, no chance for reshoots, not even any regard for lighting. In fact, most of them were taken by random tourists. My story begins when I was in New York City for a speech, and my wife took a picture of me holding my daughter on her first birthday. We’re on the corner of the 57th and 5th avenue. We happened to be back in New York exactly a year later, so we decided to take the same picture.Well you can see where this is going. Approaching my daughter’s third birthday, my wife said, “Hey, why don’t you take Sabina back to New York and make it a father-daughter trip, and continue the ceremony?” This is when we started asking passing tourists to take the picture. So these photos are far more than representatives for a single moment, or even a specific trip. They’re also ways for us to freeze time for one week in October and reflect on our times and how we change from year to year, and nor just physically, but in every way. Because while we take the same photo, our viewpoints change, and she reaches new milestones and I get to see life through her eyes, and how shecommunicates with and sees everything. This is different from a palace, which is no fortified-though there are many similarities among these types of construction. Usage of the term has varied over time and has been applied to diverse structures. The European castles originated in the 9th and 10th centuries, resulting in its land divided among nobles. These nobles built castles to control the area surrounding them, and they were both offensive and defensive structures. Although army uses are often emphasized in castle studies, the structures also served as centres of administration and symbols of power. Urban castles were used to control the local people and importanttravel routes, and rural castles were often built near farmland. Many castles were originally built from earth and wood, but had their defences supplanted later by stone. In the late 12th and early 13th centuries, scientific approaches to castle defence appeared, and could function to maximize the castle’s firepower. These changes in defence came from a mixture of castle technology. Although gunpowder was introduced to be built well into the 16th century, improved cannon(大炮)fire made them uncomfortable places to live in. As a result, true castles went into decline. From the 18th century onwards, there was a renewed interest in castles with the construction of mock (仿造的)castles, part of a romantic revival(复活)of Gothic architecture, but they had no defensive purpose.8. A new study has concluded thattwo common bacteria that cause colds, ear infections, and sore throat can live for long period in the surfaces of toys, books and other child-related items, even after being cleaned. The findings just published in the journal Infection and Immunity show some bacteria continue to exist on surfaces for far longer than it has been believed. The researchers said the study suggests that additional precautions(预防措施)may be necessary to prevent infections, especially in settings such as schools, daycare centers, and hospitals. “These findings should make us more cautious about bacteria in the environment since they change our ideas about how these particular bacteria arte spread.”Said Anders Hakansson, assistant professor of microbiology and immunology in the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. “Never before had any paper proved that these bacteria can survive well on various surface, including hands, and potentially spread between individuals.”S. pneumoniae(肺炎链球菌)is widespread in daycare centers and a common cause of hospital infections; Hakansson explained to us that it commonly causes sore throat and skin infections in children and adults. To reach their conclusions, the UB researchers tested the surfaces of toys in a daycare center. The testing was done just before the center opening in the morning so it had been many hours since the last human contact.“ Beautiful colonization(细菌增值)doesn’t, by itself, cause infection but it’s a necessary first step if an infection is going to become established in a human host,” he explains, “Children, the elderly and others with weak immune systems are easily infected.”12. helps you develop other good habits.I figured that I was the perfect test case for the Make Your Bed to Achieve Happiness Theory and that it was worth a try.So far I've made my bed for 10days in a row.And here's what I've noticed:Making my bed inspires my children to make their beds, clean their rooms and do the laundry and the dishes.Karen Miller, author of"Hand Wash Cold",explains:"The state of your bed is the state of your head."I think she is on to something. When I leave my bed in a heap (一堆),I leave the bedroom feeling defeated by my bed,my alarm clock, and my general sleepy mood.I'm reluctant to get the day started. But when I look at my freshly made bed,I have to admit it:I smile a little.I feel just a bit more motivated.Productive,even.But sticking to a budget? That part is still up for debate.I just bought some beautiful pillows for my freshly made bed.I can't leave that beautiful bedhalf-dressed,can I?4.The author decided to make her bed ______ .A.to create a good impressionB.to form some keystone habitsC.under the influence of a bookD.at the request of her family5.After watching the author making her bed,the author's children ______ .A.got up very earlyB.felt 【小题4】D【解析】24.C.细节理解题.根据第二段的But something I read last week in Charles Duhigg's"The Power of Habit"changed my mind可知,作者以前不爱叠被子,但是读了The Power of Habit一书后,她决定进行一些改变.故选C.25.C.推理判断题.根据第四段的Making my bed inspires my children to make their beds, clean their rooms and do the laundry and the dishes可知,作者的行为影响到她的孩子们,他们开始分担家务.故选C.26.D.词义猜测题.根据上一句When I leave my bed in a heap (一堆),I leave the bedroom feeling defeated by my bed,my alarm clock, and my general sleepy mood.和下一段的But一词可知,如果不叠被子,作者会感到哪里都是乱七八糟,不愿意开始新的一天,但是叠了被子心情就会好一些.故推断划线词意为"不愿意".故选D.27.D.推理判断题.根据作者开始叠被子后的感受,特别是最后一段的I have to admit it:I smile a little.I feel just a bit more motivated. CSince than any other American city. The walls that were once ugly with graffiti (涂鸦)are now covered with beautiful pictures of historical heroes and modern art, thanks to the Mural Arts Program (MAP).Its work makes schools and public places attractive, and its citizens very proud. The program began as part of Philadelphia's AntiGraffiti Network.Jane Golden is the MAP's artistic director."When people ask me what our program is about,"she says,"I answer them with one word:hope".Each year, the MAP offers youth art programs and workshops. Some onetime graffitiwriters even help paint MAP murals. The MAP's work, says Golden,is all about developing a sense of community (社区).When a neighborhood requests a mural, the MAP works with the people there to develop a message. Some messages have been"Safe Streets","Love and Care",and"Peace Walk".The MAP receives up to 50requests for murals each week.Last year, the workers painted 140murals."The making of a mural enters people's collective memory as an MAP?______A.Successful.B.Dangerous.C.Experimental.D.Difficult.【答案】【小题1】A 【小题2】B 【小题3】D 【小题4】A【解析】28.A主旨大意题.根据第二段Jane Golden的话When a neighborhood requests a mural, the MAP works with the people there to develop a message可知,当人们问及该项目是关于什么的时候,她用一个词来概括,即Hope,故选A29.B推理判断题.根据第一、二段The walls that were once ugly with graffiti (涂鸦) are now covered with beautiful pictures of historical heroes and modern art,昔日曾经被涂鸦的墙壁正被美丽的壁画所覆盖,以使社区更具魅力,因此对抗涂鸦应是该项目的目的,故选B.30.D细节理解题.根据第三段第二句When a neighborhood requests a mural, the MAP works with the people there to develop a message可知,当社区的居民请求画一张壁画时,该项目的工作人员就和当地的人们一起工作来拟定出一个主题,故选D.31.A推理判断题.根据第一段及倒数第二段So far, more than 1,800murals (壁画) have been painted.Philadelphia now has more murals than any other American city可知,该项目很成功,故选A. DA strange, new dilemma faces Chinese pedestrians:should you help an elderly person who has fallen into the street? But how can you possibly solve a case like this, where the only evidence comes from two conflicting viewpoints?可知由于事故发生在监控盲区,双发都在寻找证人.当地公安局也在调查该事件.不过在这种两方各执一词,证据也只是双方证词的情况下,如何解决纠纷?由此推知,"both sides are looking for witnesses to clear their names"的意思是"双方都在寻找能证明他们说真话的人".故选D.34.C 细节推理题.根据倒数第二段In civil cases,"if you accuse someone of causing you harm or losses, you should collect convincing proof to back your claim,"said Ye."If you cannot do that, the law will not be able to support your claim."可知叶林教授说"如果你指控他人对你造成伤害或损失,你就要收集支持自己诉讼的证据.如果你无法举证,那么法律将无法支持你的诉讼请求."由此推知,直到有说服力的证明,这项原则才会将被告人视为无罪.故选C.35.B 理解推断题. Book TV.B. The Los Angeles Times.C. Natural History Museum.D. Los Angeles Public Library.2. How are the best book prizes chosen?A. By a group of experts.B. By a vote of the authors.C. By the reading public.D. By festival sponsors.3. What is true about tickets to the festival?A. They are only for published authors.B. They include transport to each event.C. This leaves more space for open country, such as farmland. On Christmas Day, 1988, a local radio host in Bo ston played “Christmas in the Trenches”, a song about the Christmas Truce, several times and was stunned by his listeners’ response. How did the generals finally put an end to the soldiers’ socialising?A. They sent the soldiers’ loved ones to prison.B. They moved the two groups of soldiers further apart.C. They increased the number of officers to control the soldiers.D. They warned the soldiers that they would face severe punishment.10. The underlined word “stunned” in Paragraph 4 most probably means ________.A. satisfiedB. shockedC. amusedD. More recently, Associated Press and Yahoo!have been punishing computer-written articles. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 r efer to?A. Journalism.B. Advertising.C. Facebook.D. Business.15. In Paragraph 4, which of the following is mentioned as a characteristic of a well-written news article?A. The information presented is up-to-date.B. The author's opinion is clear.C. Different views on the topic are presented.D. The language used is vivid.第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分l0分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

We must get used to computers that talk back.Last year, investment bank Deep Ventures attracted much media attention when it announced that it had appointed an AI computer to its board of directors to help make important business decisions. What actually happened was that the company used a program called VITAL to analyse potential investments in different businesses. But VITAL doesn’t attend board meetings or vote-it’s just a program. While it’s not quite the evil robot we see in science fiction movies, it shows us how far computers and AI have advanced.Soon AI systems will be driving our vehicles, interpreting our facial expressions as we perform complex tasks, translating our voices into different languages and building other machines for us in factories around the world. But they won’t look like us or pretend to be human. In the new film Ex Machina, a computer scientist is asked to assess whether a beautiful human-looking robot called Ava has human intelligence. I won’t spoil the film for you, but it occurred to me that one of the reasons we believe other human beings are conscious and have intelligence is that we’re told they are all the time. Indeed, if you stepped believing other people have minds, you would quickly find yourself unable to function in the world.Google’s Eric Schmidt argues that we shouldn’t worry about AI, and that we need instead to redesign our education systems so that we learn how to get on with the machines. As powerful computer-based intelligences continue developing, we must let go of the belief that only humans have intelligence and consciousness. Just as we have accepted the reality that it can also exist within the machine world.28. According to Professor Stephen Hawking, human beings __________.A. may be endangered by strong AIB. are still more intelligent than machinesC. will benefit greatly from the advances in AID. will never be able to build a strong AI system29. According to Paragraph 2, VITAL can __________.A. attend board meetings to voteB. make final decisions for the bankC. attract more investments to the bankD. assess the value of different businesses30. The author predicts that AI machines will soon be able to __________.A. control people’s facial expressionsB. construct other intelligent machinesC. have a human-like physical appearanceD. change people’s speeches into different languages31. Which of the following would the author most probably agree with?A. It is too late to stop the danger of artificial intelligence.B. Humans should learn to live with intelligent machines.C. Intelligent machines will eventually control the world.D. Only humans can have intelligence and consciousness.DMature-age university students are annoying, I know. I understand that when you’re 18 or 19, and already know everything, there’s no need to do the readings or show up prepared for class. I also understand that there are these old people in class who should be doing other things-maybe retiring, or gardening in he backyard. Although afraid, I eventually took a university preparation course and a year later became a 35-year-old university freshman.Like many mature-age students, after completing my degree, I continued studying and eventually attained my PhD.Now I’m a lecturer at Toronto University in Canada. In fact, I have just finished preparing a group of mature-age students to annoy next year’s young first years. My students come from many different backgrounds. But they all share an enthusiasm for knowledge and learning.I know they are ridiculous and show up to class with folders full of readings, minds overflowing with ideas and concepts they want to discuss. I was the same. But, contrary to the stereotype of the annoying mature-age students occupying the airtime in class, most don’t want to control the discussion. They’re likely to be waiting, counting away the seconds silently in the hope that someone will want to talk about all of these amazing ideas we’re learning about. Only after waiting for younger voices to speak (but which often remain silent).Speaking for myself, I love students who come prepared and ready to discuss stuff. So let’s celebrate all of those “annoying” mature-age students.32. According to the article, a mature-age student is a person __________.A. who behaves like an adultB. studying for a higher degreeC. not yet qualified to enter universityD. who starts university at an older age33. In the first paragraph, the author __________.A. shows that he is opposed to mature-age studentsB. describes the problems mature-age students createC. makes fun of the attitude held by many young studentsD. explains why many teachers dislike mature-age students34. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer to?A. Retired people.B. Early high school leavers.C. Mature-age university students.D. University students aged below 20.35. Why do mature-age students often wait before speaking in class?A. They are not very familiar with the topic being discussed.B. They want to give the younger students more chances to speak.C. They lack the ability to give their opinions.D. They are more interested in hearing others’ opinions.第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
