Host：I want to talk about the future, let me take you back to...when you were born in Hang Zhou where the headquarter still are, and you company is there.

Ma：You don’t forget you root, don’t move your root. Your headquarter is there, you founded there, you root there.

Host：You grew up in the 60s?
你是60年代长大的？
Ma：Sixty－four.
64年。

Host：Born in Sixty－four, that was the time of culture revolution.
啊，生于64年，那是文化大革命的时候，是不是啊？
Ma：Yeah, it was the end of the culture revolution. It was... Well, my grand father was a tiny landlord, after liberation was considered a bad guy. I know how tough it was, when i was a kid.
是，那是文革。

我祖父是个小地主，解放之后被认为是坏蛋。

我知道当年，我那个时候真不容易。

Host：You tried to get into three colleges, each time they rejected you.
你是进了三个学院是吗？。

你申请了三个学院，每次都被拒绝，是吧？Ma：No, there’s an examination. Young people if you want go to the university you have to take the examinations. So i failed three times. But i have a lot of fail. I fail for... Funny things i failed the key primary school test for two times, and i failed like three times for the middle school’s. And you will never believe, in Hang Zhou my city. There’s only one middle school that last only one year. It was changed from primary school to middle school, because our graduates of our school, no middle school would accept us because we were too bad, So we became a middle school.
是啊，有个考试嘛，年轻人你要去大学，你得考试。

我失败了三次，还有很多呢。

奇怪的事儿，比如小学的主要的考试，我不及格两次。

然后中学呢好像是，不及格三次。

你不会相信哈，在杭州我的城市，只有一所中学。

只开了一年，从小学变成中学。

我们毕业的时候没有中学接受我们，我们学生质量太差了，所以小学就变成中学了。

Host：What effected have though been rejected?
那么被拒绝给你带来什么影响呢？
Ma：Well, I think we have to get used to it. We are not that good, even today we still have a lot of people rejected us. I think...when i graduate from university, before i tried three times to get into university. I applied jobs for thirty times got rejected. I went for a police, they said no, you are not good. I went KFC, even when KFC came to China, came to our city. Twenty-four people went for the job, twenty-three people were accepted, i was the only guy. And we went for police, five people four of them were accepted, i was the only guy not received. So to me, being turned down, rejected...Oh, by the way, i told you i applied for Harvard, for ten times rejected. I know i will be rejected.
我们必须习惯于此，我们这一点做的不好。

现在我们也经常碰到人拒绝我们。

我大学毕业的时候，我试了近三年，大学都没进去。

我申请工作近30次，我想去参加警察部队，他们说你不行。

就连“啃大鸡”呀，到中国来的时候。

24个人去申请工作，23个都被接受了，就把我给拒了。

我想去参加警察4个人被接受了就是我被拒绝了。

我呢被拒绝。

顺便告诉你说，我还申请去哈佛，申请了10次都被拒绝了。

我知道。

Host：They are sorry now. Ten times you wrote and said i would like to come to Harvard.

Ma：Yeah, and then i told myself someday i will go and teach there.
我想啊有一天可能会去那里教学。

Host：I think that can be arranged. Richard Nixon came to Hang Zhou, after that
tourists flooded to the place. And that’s how you learned English.

Ma：Yeah, i really like the...when i was twelve thirteen years old that time i suddenly fell in love with the language English. And there’s no place you can learn English at that time, no books, English books. So i went to Hang Zhou Hotel, now called Shangri-La Hotel, because that was the hotel can receive foreign visitors. So every morning for nine years i showed them around as a free guide, and they taught me English. And i think that changed me, today...i am a one hundred made in China, i have never got one day trained outside China. And when people talk to me say Jack how can you speak English like that, why sometimes you talk like a western guys. I think that was the nine years, these western tourists opened my mind. Because everything they told me are so different from the things i learned from the schools and from my parents. So now i have a habit whatever i see, whatever i read, i use my mind, think about it for two minutes.
是的，我不知道12,14，20 年间我就突然爱上英语了。

而且呢，当时没地儿学啊，没有书，所以呢，我去杭州饭店现在呢叫杭州香格里拉了，当时呢这个饭店是可以接受外国游客的。

每天早上，九年我自愿当导游，他们教我英语。

确实改变了我，我是百分之百的中国制造哈，我这英语从来没在国外学过。

人们说马云啊你的英语怎么这么好，你有的时候说话像西方人一样，我想那就是这九年，这些西方的游客打开了我的眼界。

他们教我的所有东西都是很不同于我在学校学的东西，在我父母那儿学的东西，所以我现在有个习惯，我看我想东西都要用两分钟。

Ma:Like forest Gump, we keep on fight, we keep on chang ourselves, we don’t complain. Whether you are successful or not successful, i find when people when they finished their job, either they made the mistake or failed, if they always complain the others, this guy will never come back. If the guy only checked himself, yeah something wrong with me here, something wrong with me there, this guy this guy
has hope.
我们就像阿甘一样，持续的争斗，持续地改变自己，不要抱怨。

你成功不成功，我就觉得我觉得，人做完一件工作，如果犯了错或失败的话，如果向别人抱怨的话，那么这个人就不会再回来了。

如果这个人只是检查自己，嗯我这儿做得不好，哪儿做得不好，那这个人就有希望了。
