At the top of the agenda were fundamental improvements in the training of operators and the design of control systems for reactors. The International Atomic Energy Agency also chose the meeting on the Chernobyl accident to announce it would step up its safety checks of nuclear power stations. Up to that time, with more than 300 nuclear power plants operating worldwide, the IAEA had sent safety review teams to inspect stations in only nine countries, mostly in the Third World. Now the emphasis would switch to reactors in the developed world, including the Soviet Union, US and Britain.According to regulations, an international safety review could be undertaken by the IAEA only following a formal request from a member country. However, the meeting in Vienna produced a list of 14 recommendations for future action following the Soviet report on Chernobyl. The IAEA meeting said that better fire protection and more advanced techniques for firefighting were needed. The possibility of developing lightweight clothing to protect firefighters from radiation was of particular interest; so was the use of robot firefighters. The Soviet Union used minerals and sand to damp down the fires. Both Soviet and Western experts agreed there was no way of knowing in advance if this would work. Luckily, it did.Decontamination (去除放射性污染) was another area where theinternational nuclear community was anxious to learn more from Chernohyl. The Soviet clean-up involved treating buildings and the ground around the reactor with special chemicals to reduce the spread of radioactive dust. Heavily contaminated soil was removed. At the final press conference about the Chemohyl accident, the leader of the Soviet delegation (代表团) claimed that Chernobyl would not be repeated. There would have to be greater efforts to make sure that the design of nuclear plants eliminated the possibility of errors by operatorns. This would include making it difficult to override (使无效) safety systems, as happened at Chernobyl. It would also mean greater use of simulators (模拟装置) to train operators.第61题:According to paragraph 1, nuclear experts thought that in order to make nuclear power safer the first thing to do should be ______.A.to improve the training of operators and the design of the reactors' control systemsB.to inspect nuclear power plants in the Third WorldC.to send safety review teams to all the developed countriesD.to hold a meeting on the Chernobyl accident第62题:At the meeting on the Chernohyl accident , the IAEA said that it would ______.A.inspect all the nuclear power plants in the worldB.send more safety review teams to the developing countriesC.inspect nuclear power stations in another 9 countriesD.pay much more attention to the safety conditions of the reactors in the developed countries第63题:According to paragraph 2, in the Chernohyl accident ______.A.the firefighters wore special lightweight clothing to protect themselves from radiationB.the fire was extinguished by robot firefightersC.nothing was used to put out the fire because no one knew what could be usedD.minerals and sand were used to put out the fire第64题:In the last two sentences of paragraph 2, both "this" and "it" refer to ______.A.the fireB.the sandC.the use of minerals and sand to put out the fireD.the use of robot firefighters to put out the firePassage TwoBritain's government raises millions of pounds each year from the National Lottery (抽奖) and some of this money is used as an additional allowance for the arts. But this money can only be spent on "capital projects", and not on an institution's day-to-day expenses.Lottery money has been made available for many exciting new building projects to improve theatres, galleries and museums. But the project which has received the most publicity is the £ 78 million renewal on the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden. The House is the home of Britain's greatest opera company, as well as the Royal Ballet(芭蕾舞团). It's also considered to be the best arts institutions -- tickets to the opera can cost up to 200 -- and not everyone is happy that so much lottery money is being used for the benefit of a rich minority. But since builders moved into the Royal Opera House last July, that controversy has been overshadowed by a more serious crisis: the opera company is facing financial collapse.According to a special investigation, the crisis is the result of serious mismanagement by Opera House staff, and there have been calls for its allowance to be withdrawn completely. Now, the Opera House has to wait to hear from a government working party about its future survival. 第65题:Which Of the following's renewal has received the public's attention most?A.The gallery.B.The museum.C.The Royal Opera House.D.The park.第66题:Some people don't think it good to spend so much lottery money renewing the Royal Opera House because ______.A.the House itself has enough money to renew itB.the House is not too old, so renewing it is unnecessaryC.only a few people like to attend the opera or the balletD.only a rich minority can afford to enjoy the opera or the ballet第67题:The statement "that controversy ... financial collapse" (Para. 3, sentence 1) can be best paraphrased as ______.A.that controversy has become less important because of the opera company's financial crisisB.that controversy has become more serious because of the opera company's financial crisisC.that controversy has become more important than the opera company's financial crisisD.that controversy has been caused by the opera company's financial crisis.第68题:Who should be responsible for the opera company's financial crisis?A.The company president.B.The company staff.C.The government.D.The public.Passage ThreeIt is hard to imagine a more perfect gift than a fine watch, which lasts a lifetime and can become a family heirloom (传家宝). "Other gifts that you give don't last very long," says vice president Karl-Friedrich Scheufele of Geneva-based Chopard. "And there are very few that stay with the person wherever they go. This is the amazing thing about watches -- they are both beautiful and intimate. You have one on your wrist, and you remember a happy time in your life when you look at it."For something so personal, choosing the right watch demands corresponding care. Here is a brief look at some trends watch buyers will encounter this season. The most obvious trend in watches this season is the overwhelming popularity of sports watches in stainless steel. Yellow gold and two-tone watches of gold and steel are out -- and full steel is in.With the steel trend comes sportiness (花哨), which has been the industry's watchword, as it were, for the past three years. Generally speaking, the demand for large-scale steel-case designs -- with either steel or leather straps -- has led to a great supply of large, even bulky, designs for both men and women. "There is a demand for watches that are bigger and bolder," says Suryia Hill, media-relations manager for Roberg6 Watches Geneva. At Citizen, bulky sports watches are the big sellers. "People like to differentiate themselves with their watches, and calm, thin designs are not popular at the moment," says Willi Richter, general manager of Hamburg-based Citizen Watch Europe GmbH. "Young, middle-aged and even older people these days want to show that they are active, so they prefer bold, active watches."第69题:A fine watch is regarded as a perfect gift for all of the following reasons EXCEPT ______.A.it can last a very long timeB.everyone needs a watchC.it stays with the gift receiverD.it is a witness of a person's happy moments第70题:What does "in" (Para. 3, last sentence) mean?edB.welcomeC.popularD.obtainable第71题:What can be inferred from sentence 1 in paragraph 4?A.Sportiness goes together with steel.B.Sportiness has been the password for some years.C.It seems as if sportiness were the password.D.Sports watches have been popular for some years.第72题:This text is most probably ______.A.a part of an advertising sectionB.a part of a sales catalogC.a trend analysisD.a technical paperPassage FourIn 10 years, the mutual-fund industry won't even be called that. The term "mutual fund" will be much too confining to encompass(包括) the various types of mixed investment vehicles(手) that will be available to investors around the world. Technology, especially the Internet, will be the most significant driver, affecting every aspect of the mutual-fund industry, from products and delivery to providers and customers. The future version of today's mutual funds will be available for purchase across the globe by citizens of many nationalities in just about any currency. The average investor will be able to trade bonds as well as stocks with ease 24-hours a day, 365 days a year by using voice-held, satellitelinked PCs. A Brazilian citizen, for example, will be able to buy shares of the Vanguard 500 Index Fund in London at midnight, using its price in New York at 02:00 Greenwich Time, to be settled in Japanese yen. With the vast amount of information and instantaneous (瞬间) service available to investors through the Internet, the merits of an investment product will drive its consumption. Investment products in the next decade will come in finer shades of investment objectives. Demand for investment products will be huge around the world. In the United States, there has been considerable discussion of the impact that maturing baby boomers will have on financial markets and levels of investment. The subsequent Generation X and Internet Generation groups are very likely to pick up any slack (呆滞,萧条) due to disinvestment by boomers, and on their own, elevate investment to a new level by 2008. Generation X'ers(新生的一代人) appear to be more highly motivated to invest than the boomers, while the Net Generation' s comfort level with technology will stimulate investment as well.第73题:Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A.The future citizens of different countries can have a purchase across the globe by means of mutual funds.B.The advantage of an investment product through the Internet will accelerate its consumption.C.Technology will have a mild effect on mutual fund industry and investment products.D.Investment products in the next 10 years will show up in slight differences of investment objectives.第74题:The word "settle" (Para. 2) most probably means ______.A.determinepareC.establishD.pay第75题:It can be inferred from the passage that ______.A.the great changes in the investment vehicles will be one of the characteristics of global economyB.Generation X will be stimulated by their level with technology to invest more than their fathersC.mutual fund industry will face a tough situation caused by the use of new technologyD.American people have different opinions about the influence of maturing baby boomers on the financial markets第76题:The best title for this passage might be ______.A.Mutual Fund IndustryB.Technology in Mutual FundC.Transformation of the Mutual-fund IndustryD.Investment and Baby BoomingPassage FiveIn general, cognitive(认知的) psychologists who study memory, language, and thought see these human behaviors as information processing involving input, processing (coding and storage ), and retrievel (检索). Perhaps the best and most obvious way to describe the information processing view of thought is to compare the human being with a computer. Information is coded and fed into a computer in an organized way. When the computer is asked to produce a part of that information, the machine searches its memory and outputs the information on a screen or prints it out. For example, we might ask for the names of all people hired by a large multinational bank on July 12, 1984. This relatively simple task is equivalent to asking you to search your memory for the names of the first seven presidents of the United States. Then we might ask the computer to tell us who among the workers hired on July 12, 1984, was the most productive. This task is more complex because these data do not exist in the computer precisely in that form. The computer could not simply reproduce information from its memory; to produce the data requested, it would have to process the information it did have -- analyze and manipulate it in some way. If the computer had data on the number of items processed per day, the absences, and the number of quality complaints for each worker, it could collect that information, analyze it, and answer the question. The operation of human cognitive processes is basically similar to the way a computer functions but except for speed of calculation, our abilities far surpass those of the most sophisticated computer. One area of research, known as artificial intelligence, concentrates on developing computer programs that reproduce certain human cognitive functions. Although some of the programs work well in certain simplified situations, no program can yet cope with the complex input and output functions required of most human beings. In order to understand how we process information, we will look at three stages -- input, processing (coding and storage), and retrieval -- in more detail.第77题:How does the author describe the information processing of thought and memory? _________第78题:How does the computer cope with the complex task -- selecting the most productive worker? ________第79题:Why does the author say that human beings far surpass computers? ________ 第80题:What should the author talk about in the next paragraph? _________翻译第81题:It was not often realized that women held a high place in southern European societies in the 10th and 11th centuries. As a wife the woman was protected by the setting up of a dowry(陪嫁). Admittedly, the purpose of this was to protect her against the risk of being discarded, but in reality, its function is that social and family life of the time was much more important. The dowry was the wife's right to receive a tenth of all her husband's property. The wife had the fight to withhold consent in all transactions the husband would make. (2) And more than just a fight: the documents show that she enjoyed a real power of decision, equal to that of her husband. In no case do the documents indicate any degree of difference in the legal status of husband and wife.__3) The wife shared in the management of her husband's personal property, but the opposition was not always true. (4) Women seemed perfectly prepared to defend their own interests against husbands who tried to exceed their rights, and on occasion they showed a fine fighting spirit.A case in point is that of Marls Vivas, a Catalan woman of Barcelona. Having agreed with her husband Miro to sell a field she had inherited, for the needs of household, she insisted on compensation. None being offered, she succeeded in dragging her husband to the scribe to have a contract duly drawn up assigning her a piece of land from Miro's personal inheritance. The unfortunate husband was obliged to agree, as the contract says, "for the sake of peace". (5) Either through the dowry or through beinghot-tempered, the wife knew how to win herself, within the extent of the family, a powerful economic position. ____________写作Directions: You are to write a composition on topic "Population Problem" in no less than 120 words according to the outline given below. In time, the migration became a habit in spite of the disappearance of glaciers.Another theory proposes that the ancestral home of all modem birds was the tropics. When the region became overpopulated, many species were crowded north. During the summer, there was plenty of food, but during the winter, scarcity forced them to return to the tropics.A more recent theory suggests a relationship between increasing daylight and the stimulation of certain glands (腺) in the birds' bodies that may prepare them for migration. One scientist has been able to cause midwinter migrations by exposing birds to artificial periods of daylight. He has concluded that changes occur in the bodies of birds due to seasonal changes in the length of daylight.第11题:According to one theory, when the glaciers disappeared, birds ______.A.stopped migratingB.continued migratingC.stayed in the northD.migrated south and stayed there第12题:The author states that birds left the tropics because ______.A.there was not enough food there in the winterB.there were too many birdsC.there were too many glaciersD.there was too much daylight第13题:Why did one scientist expose birds to artificial daylight?A.To test the relationship between daylight and a disease of the glands common to birds.B.To test the relationship between daylight and migration.C.To test the relationship between migration and temperature.D.To test the relationship between daylight and changes in the season.第14题:According to the theory of photo-periodism, ______.A.birds should migrate in the middle of the winterB.longer days cause changes in the bodies of birdsC.seasonal changes in the length of days do not affect migrationD.increasing daylight increases the distance of migrationThis passage supports the belief that ______.A.exact reasons for migration are not knownB.birds migrate because of changes in temperatureC.the ancestral home of all birds was the tropicsD.glaciers caused birds to migrateIn Guangzhou, capital of South China's Guangdong Province, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport resumed its international flights to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and other Southeast Asian nations and regions early this month, said an airport official yesterday. Their friends, with good will, sometimes lean forward to rearrange their neckwear, touching their hair or patting their faces--things they would never presume to do, unasked, to one of their contemporaries. An equally humiliating habit is to talk about old people in front of them as if they were not there, discussing their health. It is now universally accepted that children should be encouraged to do as much as they can for themselves in order to develop their brains and muscles, but so few people today seem to have time to allow the elderly the same means of keeping their minds and muscles active. They perform innumerable services for the old that they would be much better left to do, even with a struggle, for themselves.Convenient flats, "motherly" visitors, or organized entertainments cannot make up for the fundamental need which must be satisfied--the need to retain to the end of life human dignity and the respect of one's fellows.第21题:Many people are not aware that it is rather rude to ______.A.talk casually about old people in front of them as if they were not thereB.show sympathy for the oldC.take care of the old when they are not illD.pat the faces of the contemporaries第22题:According to the passage the old would very much like to ______.A.live aloneB.live in comfortable and well-run homesC.be treated as adults instead of babiesD.get unselfish help from their friends and relatives第23题:The author suggests that ______.A.much sympathy will inevitably humiliate the oldB.kindness and unselfish help are not necessarily what the old needC.the old should be left to do whatever they want by themselvesD.to the old, the friends' and relatives' respect is, at least, as important as their concern第24题:If the old are left to do as much as they can for themselves, ______.A.they may keep human dignity and enjoy the respect of the fellowsB.they won't feel hurt or humiliatedC.they will be able to develop their brains and musclesD.they will be able to keep their minds and muscles active第25题:The passage is mainly about that ______.A.improper care and concern may do more harm than good to the oldB.how to take good care of the old in different waysC.nowadays many people are not respectful enough to the oldD.old people are just like children, who are difficult to satisfyON DEMAND BUSINESS.IN DEMAND PEOPLE.CAREERS IN IBM ARE ALL ABOUT OPPORTUNITIESWorld leading multinational IT company. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A B C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passageIn the 1960s medical researchers Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe developed a checklist of stressful events. They appreciated thetricky point that any major change can be stressful. Negative events like “serious illness of a family member” were high on the listbut so were some positive life-changing events like marriage. When you take the Holmes-Rahe test you must remember that the score does not reflect how you deal with stress—it only shows how much you have to deal with. And we now know that the way you handle these events dramatically affects your chances of staying healthy.By the early 1970s hundreds of similar studies had followed Holmes and Rahe. And millions of Americans who work and live under stress worried over the reports. Somehow the research got boiled down to a memorable message. Women’s magazines ran headlines like “Stress causes illness” If you want to stay physically and mentally healthy the articles said avoid stressful events. But such simplistic advice is impossible to follow. Even if stressful events are dangerous many—like the death of a loved one—are impossible to avoid. Moreover any warning to avoid all stressful events is a prescription (处方) for staying away from opportunities as well as trouble. Since any change can be stressful a person who wanted to be completely free of stress would never marry have a child take a new job or move. The notion that all stress makes you sick also ignores a lot of what we know about people. It assumes we’re all vulnerable (脆弱的) and passive in the face of adversity (逆境). But what about human initiative and creativity﹖ Many come through periods of stress with more physical and mental vigor than they had before. We also knowthat a long time without change or challenge can lead to boredomand physical and mental strain.21. The result of Holmes-Rahe’s medical research tells us ____ .A the way you handle major events may cause stressB what should be done to avoid stressC what kind of event would cause stressD how to cope with sudden changes in life22. The studies on stress in the early 1970’s led to ____ .A widespread concern over its harmful effectsB great panic over the mental disorder it could causeC an intensive research into stress-related illnessesD popular avoidance of stressful jobs23. The score of the Holmes-Rahe test shows ____ .A how much pressure you are underB how positive events can change you lifeC how stressful a major event can beD how you can deal with life-changing events24. Why is “such simplistic advice”Line 1Para.3 impossible to follow﹖A No one can stay on the same job for longB No prescription is effective in relieving stressC People have to get married somedayD You could be missing opportunities as well25. According to the passage people who have experienced ups and downs may become ____ .A nervous when faced with difficultiesB physically and mentally strainedC more capable of coping with adversityD indifferent toward what happens to themPassage TwoQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passageMost episodes of absent-mindedness—forgetting where you left something or wondering why you just entered a room-are caused by a simple lack of attention says Schacter. “You’re supposed to remember something but you haven’t encoded it deeply.”Encoding Schacter explains is a special way of paying attention to an event that has a major impact on recalling it later. Failure to encode properly can create annoying situations. If you put your mobile phone in a pocket for example and don’t pay attention to what you did because you’re involved in a conversation you’ll probably forget that the phone is in the jacket now hanging in your wardrobe (衣柜). “Your memory itself isn’t failing you” says Schacter. “Rather you didn’t give your memory system the information it needed.”Lack of interest can also lead to absent-mindedness. “A man who can recite sports statistics from 30 years ago” says Zelinski “may not remember to drop a letter in the mailbox.” Women have slightly better memories than men possibly because they pay more attention to their environment and memory relies on just that. Visual cues can help prevent absent-mindedness says Schacter. “But be sure the cue is clear and available” he cautions. If you wantto remember to take a medication (药物) with lunch put the pillbottle on the kitchen table—don’t leave it i n the medicine chestand write yourself a note that you keep in a pocket. Another common episode of absent-mindedness walking into a room and wondering why you’re there. Most likely you were thinking about something else. “Everyone does this from time to time” says Zelinski. The best thing to do is to return to where you were before entering the room and you’ll likely remember.26. Why does the author think that encoding properly is veryimportant﹖A It helps us understand our memory system betterB It enables us to recall something from our memoryC It expands our memory capacity considerablyD It slows down the process of losing our memory27. One possible reason why women have better memories than men isthat ____ .A they have a wider range of interestsB they are more reliant on the environmentC they have an unusual power of focusing their attentionD they are more interested in what’s happening around them28. A note in the pocket can hardly serve as a reminder because ____ .A it will easily get lostB it’s not clear enough for you to readC it’s out of your sightD it might get mixed up with other things29. What do we learn from the last paragraph﹖A If we focus our attention on one thing we might forget another.B Memory depends to a certain extent on the environment.C Repetition helps improve our memory.D If we keep forgetting things we’d better return to where we were.30. What is the passage mainly about﹖A The process of gradual memory loss.B The causes of absent-mindedness.C The impact of the environment on memory.D A way of encoding and recalling.Passage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passageIt is hard to track the blue whale the ocean’s largest creature which has almost been killed off by commercial whaling andis now listed as an endangered species. Attaching radio devices to itis difficult and visual sightings are too unreliable to give realinsight into its behavior. So biologists were delighted early this year when with the helpof the Navy they were able to track a particular blue whale for 43 days monitoring its sounds. This was possible because of the Navy’s formerly top-secret system of underwater listening devices spanning the oceans. Tracking whales is but one example of an exciting new world just opening to civilian scientists after the cold war as the Navy starts to share and partly uncover its global network of underwater listening system built over the decades to track the ships of potential enemies.Earth scientists announced at a news conference recently thatthey had used the system for closely monitoring a deep-sea volcanic eruption (爆发) for the first time and that they plan similar studies. Other scientists have proposed to use the network for tracking ocean currents and measuring changes in ocean and global temperatures. The speed of sound in water is roughly one mile a second-slower than through land but faster than through air. What is most important different layers of ocean water can act as channels for soundsfocusing them in the same way a stethoscope (听诊器) does when it carries faint noises from a patient’s chest to a doctor’s ear. This focusing is the main reason that even relatively weak sounds in the ocean especially low-frequency ones can often travel thousands of miles.31. The passage is chiefly about ____ .A an effort to protect an endangered marine species.B the civilian use of a military detection system.C the exposure of a U.S. Navy top-secret weapon.D a new way to look into the behavior of blue whales.32. The underwater listening system was originally designed ____ .A to trace and locate enemy vesselsB to monitor deep-sea volcanic eruptionsC to study the movement of ocean currentsD to replace the global radio communications network33. The deep-sea listening system makes use of ____ .A the sophisticated technology of focusing sounds under waterB the capability of sound to travel at high speedC the unique property of layers of ocean water in transmitting soundD low-frequency sounds travelling across different layers of water34. It can be inferred from the passage that____.A new radio devices should be developed for tracking the endangered blue whalesB blue whales are no longer endangered with the use of the new listening systemC opinions differ as to whether civilian scientists should be allowed to use military technologyD military technology has great potential in civilian use35. Which of the following is true about the U.S. Navy underwater listening network﹖A It is now partly accessible to civilian scientists.B It has been replaced by a more advanced system.C It became useless to the military after the cold war.D It is indispensable in protecting endangered species.Passage FourQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passageThe fitness movement that began in the late 1960s and early 1970s centered around aerobic exercise (有氧操). Millions of individuals became engaged in a variety of aerobic activities and literally thousands of health spas developed around the country to capitalize (获利) on this emerging interest in fitness particularly aerobic dancing for females. A number of fitness spas existed prior to this aerobic fitness movement even a national chain with spas in most major cities. However their focus was not on aerobics but rather on weight-training programs designed to develop muscularmass strength and endurance in their primarily male enthusiasts. These fitness spas did not seem to benefit financially from the aerobic fitness movement to better health since medical opinion suggested that weight-training programs offered few if any health benefits. In recent years however weight training has again become increasingly popular for males and for females. Many current programs focus not only on developing muscular strength and endurance but on aerobic fitness as well.Historically most physical-fitness tests have usually included measures of muscular strength and endurance not for health-related reasons but primarily because such fitness components have been related to performance in athletics. However in recent years evidence has shown that training programs designed primarily to improve muscular strength and endurance might also offer some health benefits as well. The American College of Sports Medicine now recommends that weight training be part of a total fitness programfor healthy Americans. Increased participation in such training is one of the specific physical activity and fitness objectives of Healthy People 2000 National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives.36. The word “spas”Line 3Para.1 most probably refers to ____.A sports activitiesC recreation centersB places for physical exerciseD athletic training programs.37. Early fitness spas were intended mainly for ____.A the promotion of aerobic exerciseB endurance and muscular developmentC the improvement of women's figuresD better performance in aerobic dancing38. What was the attitude of doctors towards weight training in health improvement﹖A Positive. C Negative.B Indifferent. D Cautious.39. People were given physical fitness tests in order to find out____ .A how well they could do in athleticsB what their health condition was likeC what kind of fitness center was suitable for themD whether they were fit for aerobic exercise40. Recent studies have suggested that weight training ____ .A has become an essential part of people’s life.B may well affect the health of the trainees.C will attract more people in the days to come.D contributes to health improvement as well.Part Ⅲ Vocabulary and Structure 20 minutesDirections There are 30 incomplete sentences in this part. Environmentalists and concerned local residents, for instance, might immediately suspect environmental radiation as the culprit when a high incidence of cancer cases occurs near a nuclear facility. Epidemiologists, in contrast, would be more likely to say that the incidences were "inconclusive" or the result of pure chance. And when a breast cancer survivor, Lorraine Pace, mapped 20 breast cancer cases occurring in her West Islip, Long Island, community, her rudimentary research efforts were guided more by hope that a specific environmental agent could be correlated with the cancers than by scientific method. When epidemiologists study clusters of cancer cases and other noncontagious conditions such as birth defects or miscarriage, they take several variables into account, such as background rate (the number of people affected in the general population), cluster size, and specificity (any notable characteristics of the individual affected in each case). If a cluster is both large and specific, it is easier for epidemiologists to assign blame. Not only must each variable be considered on its own, but it must also be combined with others. Lung cancer is very common in the general population. Yet when a huge number of cases turned up among World War II shipbuilders who had all worked with asbestos, the size of the cluster and the fact that the men had had similar occupational asbestos exposures enabled epidemiologists to assign blame to the fibrous mineral.Although several known carcinogens have been discovered through these kinds of occupational or medical clusters, only one community cancercluster has ever been traced to an environmental cause. Health officials often discount a community's suspicion of a common environmental cause because citizens tend to include cases that were diagnosed before the afflicted individuals moved into the neighborhood. Add to this the problem of cancer's latency. Unlike an infectious disease such as cholera, which is caused by a recent exposure to food or water contaminated with the cholera bacterium, cancer may have its roots in an exposure that occurred 10 to 20 years earlier.Do all these caveats mean that the hard work of Lorraine Pace and other community activists is for nothing? Not necessarily. Together with many other reports of breast cancer clusters on Long Island, the West Islip situation highlighted by Pace has helped epidemiologists lay the groundwork for a well designed scientific study.第16题:The "hope" mentioned in Paragraph 1 refers specifically to Pace's desire to______.A.help reduce the incidence of breast cancer in future generationsB.improve her chances of surviving breast cancerC.determine the cause responsible for her own breast cancer caseD.identify a particular cause for the breast cancer cases in West Islip第17题:The case of the World War II shipbuilders with lung cancer is an example of______.A.an occupational clusterB.a medical clusterC.a radiation clusterD.an environmental cluster第18题:The passage suggests that the fact that "only one community cancer cluster bas ever been traced to all environmental cause" (in the third paragraph) is most likely due to the______.A.methodological difficulties in analyzing community cancer clustersB.reluctance of epidemiologists to investigate environmental factors in cancerck of credibility of citizen activists in claiming to have identified cancer agentsD.effectiveness of regulations restricting the use of carcinogens in residential areas第19题:Activists may mistakenly consider a particular incidence of cancer as part of a community cluster despite the fact that______.A.the affected individual never worked with any carcinogenic materialB.the cancer was actually caused by a long-ago exposureC.the size of the cluster is too small to be meaningfulD.the cancer actually arose in a different geographic location第20题:The word "caveats" (in the last paragraph) refers to______.A.refusals by epidemiologists to examine the work of Pace and other activistsB.potential flaws in amateur studies of cancer clusterC.warnings by activists concerning environmental dangers in their communitiesD.tendencies of activists to assume environmental causes for cancerIn the same way that a child must be able to move his arms and legs before he can learn to walk, the child must physiologically be capable of producing and experiencing particular emotions before these emotions can be modified through learning. Psychologists have found that there are two basic processes by which learning takes place. One kind of learning is called "classical conditioning." This occurs when one event or stimulus is continuously followed by a reward or punishment. It is through classical conditioning that a child learns to associate his mother's face and voice with happiness and love, for he learns that this person provides food and comfort. Negative emotions are learned in a similar fashion. The second kind of learning is called "operant (动作的) conditioning." This occurs when an individual learns to do things that produce rewards in his environment and learns not to do things that produce punishments. For example, if a mother always attends to her baby when he cries and cuddles him until he is quiet, she may teach him that if he cries he will get attention from mother. Thus, the baby will learn to increase his crying in order to have his mother more.第21题:The main purpose of this passage is to ______.A.teach children how to learn to produce and experience certain emotionsB.give the common reader a general description of two basic kinds of learningC.give parents some advice on how to modify their children's emotions through learningD.discuss with psychologists how positive and negative feelings are produced第22题:If a child is bitten or startled several times by a dog, he may learn toassociate furry (有毛皮的) animals with pain or startle and thus develop a fear of furry animals. This is a typical example of learning through ______.A.classical conditioningB.operant conditioningC.both A and BD.neither A nor B第23题:If your jokes often find a ready echo in a person, you will learn through ______ that telling jokes to this person is fun, and you will try with greater efforts to be humorous in his presence.A.classical conditioningB.operant conditioningC.neither A nor BD.some other sorts of conditioning第24题:The word "cuddle" in Para. 2 most probably means ______.A.persuadeB.hold close and lovelyC.threatenD.shout at第25题:How can a mother help the baby to cry less?A.Cuddle the baby until he is quiet.B.Leave the baby alone.C.Do not always attend to the baby.D.Teach the baby not to cry.The rise of multinational corporations (跨国公司), global marketing, new communications technologies, and shrinking cultural differences have 1ed to an unparalleled increase in global public relations or PR.Surprisingly, since modem PR was largely an American invention, the U.S. leadership in public relations is being threatened by PR efforts in other countries. Ten years ago, for example, the world's top five public relations agencies were American-owned. In 1991, only one was. The British in particular are becoming more sophisticated and creative. A recent survey found that more than half of all British companies include PR as part of their corporate (公司的) planning activities, compared to about one-third of U.S. companies. It may not be long before London replaces New York as the capital of PR.Why is America lagging behind in the global PR race? First,Americans as a whole tend to be fairly provincial and take more of an interest in local affairs. Knowledge of world geography, for example, has never been strong in this country. Secondly, Americans lag behind their European and Asian counterparts (相对应的人) in knowing a second language. Less than 5 percent of Burson-Marshall's U.S. employees know two languages. Ogilvy and Mather has about the same percentage. Conversely, some European firms have half or more of their employees fluent in a second language. Finally, people involved irt PR abroad tend to keep a closer eye on international affairs. In the financial PR area, for instance, most Americans read the Wall Street Journal. Overseas, their counterparts read the Journal as well as the Financial Times of London and The Economist, publications not often read in this country.Perhaps the PR industry might take a lesson from Ted Turner of CNN(Cable News Network). Turner recently announced that the word "foreign" would no longer be used on CNN news broadcasts. According to Turner, global communications have made the nations of the world so interdependent that there is no longer any such thing as foreign.第26题:According to the passage, U.S. leadership in public relations is being threatened becauseA.an unparalleled increase in the number of public relations companiesB.shrinking cultural differences and new communications technologiesC.the decreasing number of multinational corporations in the U.S.D.increased efforts of other countries in public relations第27题:London could soon replace New York as the center of PR because ______.A.British companies are more ambitious than U.S. companiesB.British companies place more importance on PR than U.S. companiesC.British companies are heavily involved in planning activitiesD.four of the world's top public relations agencies are British-owned第28题:The word "provincial" (Line 2, Para. 3) most probably means" ______".A.limited in outlookB.like people from the provincesC.rigid in thinkingD.interested in world financial affairs第29题:We learn from the third paragraph that employees in the American PR industry ______.A.speak at least one foreign language fluentlyB.are ignorant about world geographyC.are not as sophisticated as their European counterpartsD.enjoy reading a great variety of English business publications第30题:What lesson might the PR industry take from Ted Turner of CNN?A.American PR companies should be more internationally-minded.B.The American PR industry should develop global communications technologies.C.People working in PR should be more fluent in foreign languages.D.People involved in PR should avoid Using the word "foreign".完型填空As the plane circled over the airport, everyone sensed that something was wrong. Paintings by Ruby, an Asian elephant who lived at the Phoenix Zoo in Arizona, sold for up to $5,000 in the late 1980s, said Dick George, a consultant with the zoo. "Ruby was about seven months old when she first came to the zoo", said George. "She lived with a goat and some chickens, but she didn"t have an elephant companion for a number of years. She spent a lot of time drawing in the dirt with a stick to make her days more stimulating. Her keeper bought her some art supplies". George said, ", Ruby was excited about painting right from the beginning". The elephants at the art academies in the Southeast Asia are taught to hold a paintbrush with the tip of their trunks. Initially, the keeper guides the elephant"s trunk over the canvas(画布) and offers rewards for good performance. The development of social and political skills is also considered to be very important. To help Americans develop these other important skills, schools have added a large number of extracurricular(课程外) activities to daily life at school. This is especially tree of high schools and colleges and extends down into elementary schools as well. Athletics, frequently called "competitive sports", are perhaps the most important of these activities. Football, basketball, and baseball teams are seen as very important in teaching students, particularly boys, the "winning spirit". At times, athletic teams seem to become more important to some students and their parents than the academic programs offered by the schools.(分数:10.00)(1).Americans believe that education is ______.(分数:2.00)A.the only way to successB.the main purpose of the schoolsC.just like climbing laddersD.important to success(2).Which of the following is NOT mentioned as important to success?(分数:2.00)A.intellectual achievementpetitive personalityC.social backgroundsD.social and political skills(3).A variety of extracurricular activities are added in American schools ______.(分数:2.00)A.to help students climb the education ladderB.to enrich students" dull life at schoolC.to help students become more successful in later lifeD.to extend college education down into elementary schools(4).Athletic activities are designed ______.(分数:2.00)A.to make boys strongerB.to teach students winning spiritC.to develop students" social and political skillsD.to improve the academic programs(5).Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?(分数:2.00)cation and SuccessB.Extracurricular Activities at SchoolC.Athletic SportsD.Intellectual AchievementPeople once widely believed that intelligent life existed on Mars. The 19th-century discovery of what appeared to be geometric designs cut across the surface was taken as evidence. The lines were thought to have been a system of canals that had been built to irrigate the surface. It is now clear that "canals"—perhaps the most spectacular geologic features of Mars—are natural valleys where ancient rivers once flowed. Another fragmented idea concerns the planet"s seasonalchanges in color. Once attributed to the rapid spread of some life-form, these shifts are now known to develop from the movement of fine dust in the atmosphere. By the close of the 20th century none of the many experiments conducted by spacecraft had ever found persuasive evidence of life. Nevertheless, speculation continued over the existence of some form of life, in either the present or the past. In 1996 scientists discovered organic compounds and minerals in a meteorite(陨石), consisting of Martian rock, that collided with Earth around 11,000 B.C. These compounds suggest that Mars may have been inhabited by organisms more than three billion years ago.(分数:10.00)(1).Why did people in the 19th century believe the existence of intelligent life on Mars?(分数:2.00)A.Because the surface of Mars seemed to be geometric.B.Because the lines were drawn across the surface of the planet.C.Because a system of canals was thought to be there.D.Because it was the Martians that built the canals.(2).The "canals" on Mars have proved to be ______ according to the passage.(分数:2.00)A.the minor geologic characteristic of MarsB.natural valleys on the surface of MarsC.rivers that have kept flowing since ancient timesD.a system that irrigates the whole surface(3).What were the Mars" seasonal changes in color believed to be?(分数:2.00)A.The natural changes on the planet.B.The seasonal cycles.C.The movement of some life form.D.The storm of dust in its atmosphere.(4).How is the 1996 discovery related to the possible existence of organisms on Mars?(分数:2.00)A.The meteorite containing organic compounds is part of Mars.B.A Martian rock struck Earth about 11,000 years ago.C.The organisms came back to life after the collision with Earth.D.The inhabiting organisms appeared more than three billion years ago.(5).How many arguments in this passage lead to the belief of the existence of life on Mars?(分数:2.00)A.Two.B.Three.C.Four.D.Five.Weather Forecast The following forecast shows for the listed cities the projected weatherconditions and the expected range of temperatures from the afternoon high to the evening(分数:10.00)2.00)A.Kansas City will be warmer than TorontoB.temperatures will be the lowest in Seattle and MinneapolisC.the weather will be fine in most of the listed citiesD.more than half of the listed cities ore cloudy or rain likely(2).Among the following four cities, the difference between the afternoon high and the evening low is smallest in ______.(分数:2.00)A.Kansas CityB.MiamiD.Seattle(3).Which of the following cities is closest m Miami in weather conditions?(分数:2.00)A.BostonB.AtlantaC.WashingtonD.Houston(4).The difference between the afternoon high and the evening low is greatest in ______.(分数:2.00)A.SeattleB.Los Angeless VegasD.Phoenix(5).The differences between the afternoon high and the evening low are the same in ______.(分数:2.00)A.Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, and St. LouisB.Atlanta, San Francisco, New Orleans, and SeattleC.Cleveland, Dallas, St. Louis, and Washington,D.C.D.Pittsburg, Miami, Houston, and Boston三、Cloze(总题数:2,分数:40.00)13.Part III ClozeDirections: There are ten blanks in the following passage. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set updangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself. Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are severe over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child"s own happiness. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality(道德). Also, parents should realize that "example is better than precept". If they are not sincere and do not practise what they preach(说教), their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled. A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents"principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.第11题Eagerly watching the child"s acquisition of new skills______.A.should be avoidedB.is universal among parentsC.sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD.will make him lose interest in learning new things第12题In the process of children"s learning new skills parents______.A.should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they readB.should not expect too much of themC.should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their ownD.should create as many learning opportunities as possible第13题The second paragraph mainly tells us that______.A.parents should be strict with their childrenB.parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the communityC.parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children aloneD.parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation第14题The word "precept"(Para. 3) probably means"______"A.ideaB.punishmentC.behaviourD.instruction第15题In moral matters, parents should______.A.observe the rules themselvesB.be aware of the marked difference between adults and childrenC.forbid things which have no foundation in moralityD.consistently ensure the security of their children上一题下一题(16~20/共20题)阅读理解图片第16题The service in the first advertisement is directed to the following EXCEPT ______.A.contract organizationsB.real estate companiesC.individual personsD.special construction companies第17题The services provided in the first advertisement do not include ______.A.demolishing housesB.cleaning up construction sitesC.transporting machinesD.headache curing第18题Golden Touch Construction is ______.A.a private companyB.a national agencyC.an international cooperationD.charge-free organization第19题Services provided by Golden Touch Construction include ______.A.kitchen decorationB.bathroom buildingC.bar demolitionD.house purchase第20题Both ads promised to provide ______.A.insuranceB.cheap priceC.free estimatesD.free designing上一题下一题(21~25/共20题)阅读理解Concern with money, and then more money, in order to buy the conveniences and luxuries of modern life, has brought great changes to the lives of most Frenchmen. More people are working than ever before in France. In the cities the traditional leisurely midday meal is disappearing. Offices, shops and factories are discovering the greater efficiency of a short lunch hour in company lunchrooms. In almost all lines of work emphasis now falls on ever-increasing output. Thus the "typical" Frenchman produces more, earns more, and buys more consumer goods than his counterpart of only a generation ago. He gains in creature comforts and ease of life. What he loses to some extent is his sense of personal uniqueness, or individuality. Some say that France has been Americanized. This is because the United States is a world symbol of thetechnological society and its consumer products. The so-called Americanization of France has its critics. They fear that"assembly-line life" will lead to the disappearance of the pleasures of the more graceful and leisurely old French style. What will happen, they ask, to taste, elegance, and the cultivation of the good things in life-to joy in the smell of a freshly picked apple, a stroll by the river, or just happy hours of conversation in a local cafe? Since the late 1940"s life in France has indeed taken on qualities of rush, tension, and the pursuit of material gain. Some of the strongest critics of the new way of life are the young, especially university students. They are concerned with the future, and they fear that France is threatened by the triumph of the competitive, goods-oriented culture. Occasionally, they have reacted against the trend with considerable violence. In spite of the critics, however, countless Frenchmen are committed to keeping France in the forefront of the modem economic world. They find that the present life brings more rewards, conveniences, and pleasures than that of the past. They believe that a modern, industrial France is preferable to the old.第21题Which of the following is not given as a feature of the old French way of life?A.Leisure.B.Elegance.C.Efficiency.D.Tast第22题Which of the following is not related to the new French way of life?A.Shorter lunch hour.B.Greater output.C.Creature comfort.D.Leisurely cafe talk.第23题Nowadays few Frenchmen ______.A.prefer the modern life styleB.actually enjoy working at the assembly lineC.are more concerned with money than in the pastD.are more competitive than the old generation第24题The passage suggests that ______.A.in pursuing material gains the Frenchmen are suffering losses elsewhereB.it"s now unlikely to see a Frenchman enjoying a stroll by the riverC.the French are fed up with the smell of freshly picked applesD.great changes have occurred in the life style of all Frenchmen第25题Which of the following best states the main idea of the passage?A.Changes in the French way of life.B.Criticism of the new life style.C.The Americanization of France.D.Features of the new way of lif上一题下一题。

The creation of Ludovic Lazar Zamenhof, a Polish-Jewish ophthalmologist(眼科学者), Esperanto was first presented in 1887. An international movement to promote its use, although originally annoyed with 'disagreement, has continued to flourish and has members in more than 80 countries.Esperanto is used internationally across language boundaries by at least one million people, particularly in specialized fields. It is used in personal contacts, on radio broadcasts, and in a number of publications of both modern works and classics. Its popularity has spread from Europe— both East and West — to such countries as Brazil and Japan. It is, however, in China that Esperanto had had its greatest impact. It is taught in universities and used in many translations (often in scientific or technological works). El Popola Cinio (From People's China), a monthly magazine in Esperanto, is read worldwide. Radio Beijing's Esperanto program is the most popular program in Esperanto in the world.Esperanto's vocabulary is drawn primarily from Latin, the Romance languages, English, and German. Spelling is completely regular. A simple and consistent set of endings indicates grammatical functions of words. Thus, for example, every noun ends in o, every adjective in a, and the infinitive(不定式) of every verb in i. Esperanto also has a highly productive system of constructing new words from old: ami, to love; malami, to hate; malameno, the tendency to hate.第61题:Which statement is true according to the passage?A.Esperanto was created by a Polish.B.Esperanto was accepted at the very beginning..C.Esperanto has the greatest influence in Poland.D.Esperanto is a written language.第62题:Which statement is true about Esperanto in China?A.It is taught in elementary schools.B.About one million people speak Esperanto in China.C.China has a radio program in Esperanto.D.El Popola Cinio is a magazine published every week.第63题:What conclusion can we draw from the passage?A.Esperanto is a dying language.B.Esperanto has become the world's second language.C.Esperanto is the native language of its inventor.D.Esperanto is probably a language easy to learn.第64题:Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A.The Origin of EsperantoB.Esperanto in ChinaC.Elements of EsperantoD.EsperantoPassage TwoBeliefs are shared ideas about how the world operates. They may be' summaries and interpretations of the past, explanations of the' present or predictions for the future, and may be based on common sense, folk wisdom, religion, science, or some combination of these. Some beliefs apply to intangible (无形的) things (for example, whether the human spirit lives on after .death). All cultures distinguish between ideas for which people have reasonable proof (for Americans, for ex ample, the idea that smoking increases the risk of cancer) and ideas that have not been, or cannot be, tested (for Americans, for example, the idea that there is intelligent life on other planets). Where and how people draw the line varies, however.Bemuse beliefs shape both personal and social experience, basic differences in beliefs can account for some of the problems Vietnamese immigrants have had in American society. One exampie is beliefs concerning the nature of time. People in Western cultures believe time is irreversible (不可回转的). We think of time as a straight line. On every January 1st we add another year to the calendar. Traditionally, the Vietnamese have reckoned time in sixty-yesr cycles. Every sixty years thecycle starts over with .the year with which it began. Such a conception of time suggests that current events are not unique; that things come around again. American beliefs regarding time as linear create the sense that "time is ticking away"; the Vietnamese belief that time is cyclical creates an entirely different state of mind.Beliefs apply not only to concepts like time but also to mundane (世俗的,世间的) aspects of the material world. Residents of San Francisco were offended greatly to learn that rural immigrants from Laos and Cambodia had been stalking(蹑手蹑脚地走近) their dinner in Golden Gate Park. San Franciscans could not understand how the newcomers could hunt and eat squirrels(松鼠) and stray dogs; the Indochinese(印度支那人) could not understand why San Franciscans did not— a classic case of the same object (in this case, dogs) having different cultural meanings. Even within our own culture we can see great variation in how people think about the same re source. Some people see dogs as working animals, acquired to protect our apartments or livestock; others treat their dogs as special friends or even substitute children.第65题:According to the passage, beliefs ______.A.can be explained by common senseB.are predictions for the futureC.vary in different culturesD.can only apply to abstract concepts第66题:If you were a Vietnamese, you would believe that time ______.A.can not be reversedB.is passing by tickingC.can be recurredD.is moving in cycles第67题:The word "unique" (Para. 2) most probably means ______.ualB.having no likeC.differentD.having no standard第68题:It can be inferred from the passage that ______.A.the Indochinese are glad to hunt and eat squirrelsB.San Franciscans enjoy stalking their dinner in Golden Gate ParkC.some people treat dogs as special friends or even substitute childrenD.varied ideas about the same object can be found even in one culturePassage ThreeThe computer has changed the way we work, team, communicate, and play; Virtually ewery kind of organization throughout the world conducts business with computers. Students, teachers, and research scientists use the computer as a learning tool. Millions of individuals and organizations communicate with one another over a network of computers called the Internet. Computer games entertain people of all ages.Almost all computers are electronic digital computers. They are electronic in their use of electric current(电流) to carry information. They are digital in. that they process information as units of electric charge representing numbers. The word digital means having to do with numbers. To enable a computer to process information that is not numerical — such as words, pictures, or sounds — the computer or some other &vice must first digitize: that information. A device digitizes information by translating it into charges that represent numbers. After the computer processes the digitized information by working with the charges, the computer or a device: connected to the computer translates its results hack into their original form. Thus, an artist might use a machine called a scanner to digitize a photograph. The artist would next process the resulting electric charges in a computer to Change the photograph perhaps to add a border. The artist would then use a printer connected to the computer to produce a, copy of the altered photo.Digital computers are one of two general kinds of computers. The other kind is calculating devices called analog computers. An analog computer represents amounts with physical quantities, such as distances along a scale, rather than with numbers.第69题:The main topic of this passage is ______.A.digital computersB.the future of computerputer scienceputer and teachers.第70题:The word "digitize" (Para. 2, sentence 5) means______.A.controlB.convert data into numbersC.make use ofD.manipulate第71题:Which of the following statements is NOT true?puters are electronic digital ones.B.Teachers use computers in their work.puter enables artists to produce a copy of a photograph.puter has a close relationship with most people.第72题:The remainder of this article will deal with______.A.digital computersB.analog computersC.electronic scienceD.mathematicsPassage FourWhy has the kiwi survived while its relatives the moas have become extinct? One reason, I think, is that it has adopted nocturnal(夜间活动的) habits. Kiwis are not normally about in the daytime. During the daylight hours they lie up in hiding, where enemies have no hope of finding them. Their coloration protects them; the strange drab(黄褐色的) feathering, so unlike that of most birds, gives them a cloak(伪装)of invisibility while they sleep. And when night falls, out they come to scratch in the ground and find worms and feed to their hearts' content. They couldn't do that so effectively if they didn't have another peculiarity that I have not mentioned yet. The nostrils(鼻孔) of most birds open high up near the base of the beak(猛禽的嘴), but the kiwi wears his nostrils right near the tip of the long bill. That's good for a bird that feeds in the ground at night. The kiwi's .sight is poor at the best of times, but his sense of smell is acute and so is the sense of touch in the tip of that long bill. He can scratch in the forest floor with his eyes closed, and the, delicate sense located at the beak, tip will feel the slightest movement of a worm(蠕虫). Most of those things have an odour(气味) of some kind, which the kiwi can smell better than we can. And when he either feels or smells something worthwhile in the way of food, the delicate bill is ready to pick it up and swallow it.You see, in spite of his primitiveness, he is peculiarly and efficiently equipped for the particular way of life — better equipped than any of his competitors — and so he is able to keep ahead of them, But every time we, fell a forest tree, or open wooded land for cultivation, we axe reducing the kiwi's chance of survival, because his undoubted talents axe useful to him only under special conditions, and if those conditions axe not maintained, out he goes like a candle.第73题:The kiwi is very difficult to find during the daylight hours because ______.A.it stays out of sight and sleeps during the dayB.it usually goes from place to place during the dayC.it changes the colour of its feather in the daytimeD.it is caught and eaten by its enemy in the daytime第74题:Which statement is TRUE of the kiwi?A.It has long legs but a short bill.B.Its nostrils axe at the base of the bill.C.Its sense of touch is in the tip of the bill.D.It uses its feet to pick up food.第75题:The kiwi can feed at night because ______.A.it can see worms clearly at nightB.it has strong legs and feetC.most worms come out of the earth at nightD.its sense of smell and sense of touch at the beak-tip are very keen第76题:According to the writer, the kiwi's chance of survival will be reduced if we ______.A.continue to clear woodland for farmingB.take no steps to kill its enemiesC.keep observing it in its natural surroundingsD.do not equip it for its particular way of lifePassage FiveHow physically attractive someone is plays a major role in determining your ideas about the desirability of developing an acquaintance or a friendship with that person. Attractiveness seems to influence our perception of others' traits. Attractive people are judged to be more poised, sociable, independent, interesting, exciting, and to have greater sexual warmth. In one study concerned with the importance of physical attractiveness, Karen Dion and her colleagues asked university students to rate a series of photographs of both males and females as high, average, or low in physical attractiveness. The photos were then passed onto another group of students, who were asked to rate those pictures on a number of personality traits and to predict future events in their lives. The results showed that, regardless of whether the rater(评判人) was the same or the opposite sex as the subject, attractive people of both sexes were rated as having more socially desirable personality traits than less attractive people. In addition, attractive people were predicted to havegreater personal happiness and more prestigious future occupations than less attractive people. These impressions of beautiful people do not suddenly appear during adolescence. As early as age 4 or 5, attractive children are more popular with their peers than their unattractive counter parts. Adults also form more favorable impressions of attractive children. In one study, women read a description of an aggressive act performed by a 7-year-old child. The description was ac companied by a photograph of either an attractive child or an unattractive one.. When the women were asked to describe the child whose picture they had seen, they characterized the unattractive child as bratty(讨厌的), selfish, and antisocial. The attractive child was likely to be excused for aggressive acts because these were assumed to be deviations(偏离) from the youngster's usual behavior.Attractive people are apparently not unaware of their effect on other people. Being attractive may help determine the way that people actually behave as well a show they are perceived. Attractive males are more assertive(武断的) than less attractive males. They also have less fear of rejection and have more of their social interactions with females than with males. Attractive females are not as assertive as females who are less attractive, but both groups of women have an equal number of social interactions.第77题:What did Karen Dion's study show? ______第78题:What does the word "subject" (Para. 2) mean in the passage? ______第79题:Why did the women characterize the unattractive child as bratty, selfish and antisocial? ________第80题:What can you learn from the last paragraph?______翻译第81题:The American economic system is organized around a basicallyprivate-enterprise, market oriented economy in which consumers largely determine what shall be produced by spending their money in the marketplace for those goods and services that they want most. Private businessmen, striving to make profits, produce these goods and services in competition. with other businessmen; and the profit motive, operating under competitive pressures, largely determines how these goods and services axe produced. Thus, in the American economic system it is the demand of individual consumers, coupled with the desire of businessmen m maximize profits and the desire of individuals to maximize their incomes, that together determine what shall be produced and how resources are used to produce it. ___________写作第82题:Directions: Write a summary of the following passage in no less than 80 words. Your summary should contain the main ideas of the original passage and be clearly written down on the AN SWER SHEET.In addition to food and shelter, man has a third basic need. This is clothing.Modern man wears clothing for three purposes: for protection, for decoration, and for modesty. It is thought that prehistoric man wore clothing for a fourth reason, as a kind of magic. For example, he may have worn the skins of animals either to celebrate his victories over them, or perhaps to gain strength and wisdom from the animals he had killed.Until fairly recently it was possible to use only natural materials of various kinds for the making of clothing. Both plants and animals supply these natural materials. From plants we get cotton and linen. From animals we get such materials as wool, silk, leather and furs.Wool was one of the first fibers to be used for cloth, and for a long time it was the most common textile fiber in Europe. The fiber which we call wool comes mainly from sheep, but the hair of a few other animals is also used for cloth.Cotton has been used for over three thousand years, especially in warm countries. Cotton material was not known in Europe until much later. Material made from the cotton plant can be very soft, cool and comfortable. The finest cotton materials were very expensive at one time, and only the rich people could buy them. Two other fibers, linen and silk, have also been used extensively in the making of clothing. In addition to the natural materials from plants and animals, modern man now has cloth which is made synthetically. In the twentieth century, man has learned to create completely synthetic fibers. These are made from coal, glass, petroleum, milk and wood. Nylon, dacron and orlon are the names of a few of these synthetic fibers. Recent synthetic products include disposable paper clothing and artificial leather. In many ways synthetic fibers are much better than natural fibers. It is possible to create specific fibers to be used for specific purposes. Of all the fibers now used by man, a very large percentage is man-made. __________。
