安然无恙的成语典故（中英文对照）

据《风俗通》说，恙是一种小虫，多滋生在荒野湿地里，人如被蜇，轻则生病，重则致死。所以，恙就成了伤病的代名词。没病，就叫“没恙”；微有小病，就叫“微恙”、“小恙”人相见问好或写信致侯，常用“无恙否”这样的问候语。

《战国策齐策》载：齐王派使出访赵国，会见了赵威后。赵威后接受国书，还没拆开，就向齐使问道：“岁亦无恙耶？民亦无恙耶？王亦无恙耶？（你们齐国年成好吗？百姓好吗？国王好啊？）”齐使听了很不高兴，说道：“我是奉承国王之命，前来访问贵国。现在您先问年成和百姓，而后问国王，这岂不是先贱后贵，贵贱颠倒吗？”赵威后答道：“不然。苟无岁，何有民？苟无民，何有君？固有问。舍本而问末君耶！（如果没有好年成，哪里还有百姓的好日子，如果没有百姓，哪里还有国王？所以，我就这样问。难道要我舍本问末、本末倒置吗？）”

从这段故事，可知“无恙”一词，早就不限用于那个人的身体（无病），而已扩大适用于全体百姓的生活（无忧）和整个国家的年成（无灾）。由此引申，“无恙”实际就是“平安”的同义词。成语“安然无恙”，和“平安无事”的意思是完全一样。

赵威后故事中的“舍本而问舍”一句，后来也演变为成语“舍本逐末”比喻分不清轻重主次，抛弃了主要的、根本的，而去最求次要的，枝节的。
