The American Short Story through Film is one College English course for non-English majors. The current language teaching requires both teaching with and teaching about multimedia. This course integrates the printed text (short story) and media text (film), teaching English through literature and multimedia. Americans are said to have invented the short story, and the course selects some classical short stories in American literature and the movies adapted from them. The stories are 10-20 pages, and films last 30-50 minutes, so such a story-film course fully agrees with modern media education. The course instruction mainly includes the knowledge of literary background, introduction of authors and works, analysis and comment of short stories, questions and answers of discussion topics, and adaptation and appreciation of films.
Week 9: “Soldier’s Home” by Ernest Hemingway—film
Harold Krebs (Richard Backus) went off to fight the First World War, “the war to end all wars.” Then he came home…and found himself wishing it had never ended. To Ernest Hemingway, the hardest part of the war was coming home. This is the essence of “Soldier’s Home”—a story with many similarities to the recent experience of those Vietnam veterans. Harold finds he doesn’t fit in anymore. He’s outgrown his old life and now needs peace and quiet to work things out for himself. Yet he’s pressured by his mother (Nancy Marchand), loving but misunderstanding, to rejoin a community in which he feels alien. An intense and personal character study from the giant of American Literature, Harold discovers going home is never easy—and maybe it isn’t even possible.
Week 5: “Bernice Bobs Her Hair” by F. Scott Fitzgerald—film
Week 6: “I’m a Fool” by Sherwood Anderson—story
Week 7: “I’m a Fool” by Sherwood Anderson—film
Week 8: “Soldier’s Home” by Ernest Hemingway—story
Harold Krebs is a soldier returned. Quietly and without ceremony he comes home after the First World War. No longer does he fit into the life he left. Despite gentle pressure from family and friends, he cannot get hold of his own future. Between the non-changed hero and his past there is a desperate incompatibility. A climatic scene between mother and son foreshadows Krebs’ decision to find himself again in a new place, away from the old and familiar, which, for all time, he has outgrown.
Week 1: Introduction
Week 2: “Paul’s Case” by Willa Cather—story
Week 3: “Paul’s Case” by Willa Cather—film
Week 4: “Bernice Bobs Her Hair” by F. Scott Fitzgerald—story
The course is lecture/seminar-combined, and students’ participation and discussion are mandatory. The learning materials will be mostly in English, and students are expected to finish all the class assignments (including both story and film) in advance and come to class fully prepared for discussion. Generally, we will focus on one story/film for each week. On class days, the instructor will first present some relevant information of literary and cultural background, and then it will be followed by instructor’s leading questions, students’ discussion, and the comparative study of story/film.
The course instruction mainly includes the knowledge of literary background, introduction of authors and works, analysis and comment of short stories, questions and answers of discussion topics, and adaptation and appreciation of films. With the help of modern multimedia, the course will improve the students’ basic language skills, and hence enhance their cultural awareness, literary education, and cross-cultural communicative competence.

American Short Stories Through Film》
Traveling from town to town during the summer of 1919, young Andy (Ron Howard) has left his Ohio home in search of adventure and romance as a horse trainer on the country fair racing circuit. More than a little “wet behind the ears,” Andy learns a bittersweet lesson about life when he meets Lucy (Amy Irving), the girl of his dreams, at the race track one day. Ashamed of his occupation, Andy leads Lucy to believe he’s wealthy. Soon one lie leads to another until there is no way to tell Lucy the truth. The irony of the story is that Lucy and Andy have fallen deeply in love. As Andy dejectedly admits on his way out of town, all is lost because “I’m a Fool.”
