21.(6分)I was disheartened recently when I turned on the news to hear a story about a family who is petitioning(请愿) the Hampton School Board to receive out-of-district compensation to place their daughter in an out-of-district school due to racial bullying. I was disheartened because I know that even if this family wins their petition, the root of the problem will still continue.

While there are many contributing factors to the rapid increase of the bullying, I believe that the root of this problem lies within the restrictions of schools, or rather the teachers and administrators who allow bullying to happen while feeding the line "We have a no-tolerance policy" to students and parents.

This family can move their daughter to a new school where she will feel safe to learn and grow, but they will leave behind the problem of the educators at this school who let the racial bullying happen.

My son went to a private school in Concord. He was bullied on the play yard. The administration gave us the "No tolerance" line, but did nothing to stop the bullying or change the climate of the school.

We pulled our son out of this school and placed him in another school. This school truly understands how to guide students' acceptance of differences and embrace teachable moments so that bullying is a

non-issue.

I truly hope that this family gets the out-of-district placement for their daughter. However, I am doubtful that the school district will address the root of the problem.

1、The author felt disheartened probably because _____.

A.the family' s petition was turned down

B.the daughter of the family was bullied

C.the root of the problem won't be addressed

D.the family will receive the compensation if they win

2、According to the author, what is the main reason for the bullying increase?

A.This problem lies beyond schools.

B.The climate of schools is changeable.

C.Schools almost do nothing to stop the bullying.

D.Students don' t know how to accept differences.

3、What does the underlined expression "feeding the line" in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.Sending a message. B.Providing food.

C.Making criticism. D.Satisfying a desire.

4、What happened to the author' s son?

A.He asked his parents to place him in another school.

B.He was treated in a very unpleasant way in a school.

C.He went to a private school in Concord and studied with the girl.

D.He attended a school which knew nothing about the "No tolerance" line.

22.(8分)A sunflower is a sunflower. A mobile phone is a mobile phone. But can you combine the two to do something for your local environment? As early as next year it may well be possible. When you have finished with your mobile phone you will be able to bury it in a garden or a plant pot and wait for it to flower.

A biodegradable (生物所能分解的) mobile phone was, this month, introduced by scientists. It is hoped that the new type of phone will encourage consumers to recycle.

Scientists have come up with a new material over the last five years. It looks like any other plastic and can be hard or soft, and is able to change shape. Over time it can also break down into the soil without

giving out any poisonous chemicals. British researchers used the new material to develop a phone cover that contains a sunflower seed. When this new type of cover turns into waste, it forms fertilizers. These feed the seed and help the flower grow.

Engineers have designed a small transparent (透明的) window to hold the seed. They have made sure it only grows when the phone is throw n away. “We’ve only put sunflower seeds into the co vers so far. But we are working with plant experts to find out which flowers would perform best. Maybe we could put roses in next time.” said one scientist.

As phone technology is developing so quickly, people are constantly throwing their mobiles away. This means manufacturers are under pressure to find ways of recycling them. Some 650 million mobile phones have been sold this year. Most of them will be throw n away within two years, adding plastic, heavy metal and chemical waste to the environment. A biodegradable cover can offer some relief for nature, according to the scientists.

“The seed comes out and the flower grows in the pot so you don’t have to concern yourself with the phone when you have finished using it,” said Kerry Kirw an. She leads the rese arch team, which is based at the University of Warw ick in Britain.

1、What is the purpose of this passage?

A.To tell the popularity of biodegradable cell phones.

B.To discuss the development of the cell phone technology.

C.To persuade the readers to buy the biodegradable cell phone.

D.To introduce an environmental-friendly cell phone to readers.

2、Which of the following is TRUE about the cover of the new type of phone?

A.It can turn into useful fertilizer for the sunflower seeds.

B.It can hardly serve as the storage for the sunflower seed.

C.It may give out poisonous chemicals when breaking down.

D.It may make the seed grow after the phone is throw n away.

3、What can be inferred from the passage?

A.The new type of mobile phone will sell extremely well.

B.The new type of mobile phone is already on the market.

C.Other flowers may be used in the new type of cell phone.

D.Mobile phone is increasingly important to the environment.

4、The most suitable title for this passage might be “”.

A.Design a Phone B.Help the Sunflower to grow

C.Protec t Our Environment D.Plant Your Phone

23.(8分)Throughout our daily lives, we have known plenty of people and will know more. But how can we tell if someone is trustworthy? In a paper published recently in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researcher gave us the answer.

The researchers asked 101 adults from the United States to fill out a questionnaire measuring their guilt-proneness(内疚倾向) in different situations as well as several other qualities, and then play a short online game. In this game, Player 1 is given $1, which they can choose to give to Player2. Any money given to Player 2 is then automatically increased to $2.20. Player 2 can then decide whether to keep all of the money or behave in a trustworthy way by returning a portion of the money to Player 1. The researchers found more guilt-prone people were more likely to share the money with Player1. Actually, in follow-up studies, guilt-proneness predicted trustworthiness better than other personality qualities the researchers measured.

Why might guilt lead to trustworthy behavior? The researchers found people who were guilt-prone also reported feeling an obligation to act in ethical(合乎道德的) and responsible ways while interacting(互动) with their partners in the game. People who are guilt-prone tend to avoid engaging in behavior that might harm or disappoint others. If they do something bad, guilt encourages them to try to make things right again.

Then, how can we use this research to ascertain whether someone is trustworthy? “One way to do this might be observe how they respond to experience regret,” lead author Emma Levine, assistant professor at the University of Chicago Levine, explains. Another way is to ask them to describe a difficult dilemma they faced in the past, suggests co-author Taya Cohen, associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University. This is particularly effective, Cohen and her c olleagues have found, because it allows us to see if they’re concerned about the effects their actions have on others.

1、What may make others feel that we are reliable according to the text?

A.Our good qualities to help them out.

B.Our tendency to experience guilt.

C.Our kind attitude towards them.

D.Our team spirit in the game.

2、What may connect guilt with trustworthy behavior?

A.A sense of responsibility.

B.A feeling of disappointment.

C.The way one interacts with others.

D.The ability to tell right from wrong.

3、What does the underlined word “ascertain” in the last paragraph mean?

A.Ask B.Express

C.Describe D.Determine

4、How is the text organized and developed?

A.By providing background.

B.By making a lot of comparisons.

C.By answering the raised questions.

D.By analyzing effects of guilt-proneness.

Urban Transportation in Canada

Public transportation & Transit passes

All cities and most major towns in Canada have a public transportation system with one or more modes of transportation (bus, subway, train, etc.). The bus is the most common form of urban transportation in Canada. To use public transportation, you must purchase a ticket or a transit pass. Transit passes allow you unlimited use of public transportation for a specific period (one month or more). They are usually cheaper than buying many tickets if you plan to use public transportation often. Transportation for people with disabilities

Public transportation often has features to assist people with disabilities. In many cities and towns, there are also transportation services available specifically for people with limited mobility, such as specially equipped buses. Y ou can find out about these services in the same way you would learn more about other public transportation options.

Etiquette on public transportation

When taking public transportation such as a bus or train, it is important to understand the unspoken rules of conduct in the shared space. Here are a few things to note:

◆ Be polite and respectful to others around you. For example, maintain an appropriate noise level when talking or making a phone call.

◆ If you are carrying a backpack or a large shoulder bag in a crowded public transit vehicle, keep it close to you, preferably at your feet to avoid hitting people with it as you walk by.

◆ Avoid pushing or touching others in order to make more room for yourself. Sometimes public transit can become very crowded, but it is important to keep calm and give others appropriate personal space.

◆ Have your proof of payment accessible in case you are asked to show it.

1、What is the advantages of using transit passes over buying tickets?

A.Lower costs. B.Safer trips.

C.Longer service hours. D.More use of transport.

2、How does the transportation system help people with disabilities?

A.By offering fewer transportation options.

B.By running special transport services.

C.By limiting their mobility on city buses.

D.By providing free rides in towns and cities.

3、What is considered impolite on public transportation?

A.Lowering your speaking voice. B.Placing backpacks at your feet.

C.Having your proof of payment at hand. D.Staying close to other passengers.

25.(10分)The Nazca Lines are a series of large ancient geoglyphs (地画) in the Nazca Desert, in southern Peru. It is ranging from geometric patterns to drawings of different animals and stylized

human-like forms. The ancient lines can only be truly taken in from high in the air, leaving generations puzzled as to how these precise works could have been completed long before the documented invention of human flight.

The Lines were first spotted when commercial airlines began flying across the Peruvian desert in the 1920,s. Who built them and what was their purpose? Are they roads, star pointers, maybe even a gigantic map? If the people who lived here 2,000 years ago had only a simple technology, how did they manage to construct such precise figures? Did they have a plan? These markings are like a vast puzzle.

The Nazca Lines are the most outstanding group of geoglyphs in the world. There are also huge geoglyphs in Egypt, Malta, United States (Mississippi and California), Chile, Bolivia and in other countries. But the Nazca geoglyphs, because of their numbers, characteristics, dimensions and cultural continuity as they were made and remade throughout a certain history period, form the most impressive archeological (考古学的) group.

The Nazca plain is unique for its ability to preserve the markings upon it, due to the combination of the climate (one of the driest on Earth, with only twenty minutes of rainfall per year) and the flat, stony ground which minimizes the effect of the wind at ground level. With no dust or sand to cover the plain and little rain or wind to erode (腐蚀) it, lines drawn here tend to stay drawn. These factors, combined with the existence of lighter-colored subsoil beneath the desert surface, provide a vast writing pad that is suited to the artist who wants to leave his mark eternal.

1、502.What can we know about the Nazca Lines from the first two paragraphs?

A.They were built as a big map.

B.They were formed by nature.

C.They are ancient lines in caves.

D.They are huge markings in a desert.

2、504.How many factors make the Nazca Lines the most impressive?

A.One. B.Two.

C.Three. D.Four.

3、506.Why are the Nazca Lines well preserved?

A.Because of the wind at ground level.

B.Because of the existence of soft soil.

C.Because of the climate and geography.

D.Because of the thick sand on the top.

4、508.What does the underlined word “eternal” probably mean?

A.Non-stop. B.Ever-lasting.

C.Real-life. D.High-end.
