An Overview of American English
We have really everything in common with America nowadays, except of course, language.

– The independence led to the emergence a sense of nationality. In the field of language, this patriotic feeling was manifested by the argument for the recognition of the American variety or standard of English.
– By 1732 the original thirteen English colonies had been set up. The language the early immigrants brought with them was Elizabethan English, the language spoken by Shakespeare, Milton and Bunyan, which belonged to the early stage of Modern English.
With a century British and American English speakers will not be able to understand each other.

• After independence
– Following American independence, famous persons like Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Noah Webster begin to consider that the country should have a language of its own.

• Some experts estimate that about 4,000 words in common use in British English have a different meaning or are used differently in American English. Some reasons for this are as follows:
• Two major varieties of English
– British English (BrE) and American English(AmE) – These two varieties differ in certain details, but there is no
essential difference between them because of the similarities of the basic word stock, the basic grammar and the basic phonetic system. English is unmistakable one language, with two major national dialects.
– With the industrial revolution, many new terms were needed. As the terms were not much in print to begin with, the engineers and designers in the two countries coined their own terms without reference to each other
