Scanning is a technique used in reading to gather specific information in a text by going through it rapidly. In most cases, you know what you are looking for, so you are concentrating on finding some particular information. The most familiar way of scanning you may have experienced is searching for names in a phone directory, or looking up words in a dictionary.

The sixth sense is another term for extrasensory perception. Extrasensory perception (ESP) would involve the reception of information not gained through the recognized senses and not internally originated. According to the National Science Foundation extrasensory perception is listed as pseudoscience.
