1 Three Good Friends
One day, a monkey rides his bike near the river. This time he sees a lion under a tree. The lion runs at him. He is afraid and falls into the river. He can’t swim. He shouts. The rabbit hears him. He jumps into the river. The rabbit swims to the monkey, but he can’t help him. Luckily, an elephant comes along. He is very strong. He helps the rabbit and monkey. Three friends are very happy. They go to the elephant’s home. Then, three of them become good friends.
2 The Old Man and the Old Cat
An old man has a cat. The cat is very old, too. He runs very quickly. And his teeth are bad. One evening, the old cat sees a little mouse. He catches it, but he can’t eat it because his teeth are not strong enough. The mouse runs away.
The old man is very angry. He beats his cat. He says: “You are a fool cat. I will punish you!”the cat is very sad. He thinks:“When I was young, I worked hard for you. Now you don’t like me because I’m too old to work. You should know you are old, too.”
3 Spring in the Green Season
Spring is coming. Spring is the first season of the year. In China, spring comes in February. It is still cold, but it is getting warmer and warmer. The days get longer and longer. The leaves on the trees begin to turn green. Then they come up green leaves in the spring wind on the ground. Spring is also sowing time season.
4 Look for a Friend
Sam is a little fish. He lives in the sea. He is very lonely. He wants to have a friend. The friend looks like him. Sam sees an ink fish. The ink fish has eight legs. He doesn’t look like Sam. So Sam goes away. Sam meets a shark. He wants to say hello to the shark. The shark opens his big mouth. Sam runs away quickly. Sam is tired and hungry. He wants to have a rest. Then he sees a round fish. She says to him. “Hello! Would you like to be my friend?” Sam answers: “Of course! But you are round. I am flat.” The round fish days: “But we are both fishes.”
Sam thinks and says, “You are right. Let’s be friends.” They become good friends.
5 The Hippo(河马) and I
A hippo lives in the zoo. I like him very much.
I often go to see him. He often thinks of me, too. Today is Sunday. It is fine day. I go to see him again. After I leave the zoo, he follows me to my house. I give him lettuce, cabbages, bananas, apples and other food. He eats them up. When I sing songs, he stays in the pool. He is as quite as a rabbit.
In the evening, he jumps onto my bed with me. My mum tells him to go home. He has to pack his bag and go back to the zoo. My mum lets me see him every week.
6 Naughty Monkey
It’s very hot.. An old man is asleep on the chair. A fly comes and sits on the end of the man’s nose.
The old man has a naughty monkey. He chases(赶) the fly.
The fly comes back again and sits on the old man’s nose again. The monkey chases it away again and again.
This happens five or six times. The monkey is very angry. He jumps up, runs to the garden and picks up a large stone.
When the fly sits on the old man’s nose again, the monkey hits it hard with the stone.
He kills the fly and breaks the old man’s nose.
7 The Panda in China
A panda looks like a little bear. It has black and white fur. It lives only in China, so it is called the national treasure of China and protected by the law.
We all see panda on TV or in the zoo. They look stupid and walk slowly, but they are lovely and everyone likes them.
A panda is lucky animal. We Chinese like it, and people of the world like it, too. Now there are China’s pandas in many other countries, such as Japan and the USA…
A panda isn’t a common animal, it is bridge of friendship.
8 A Clever Farmer
Uncle Sam doesn’t like farmer. He thinks they are very foolish and only know work on the farm.
One winter morning, the sun is shining. Uncle
a farmer with a map in his hand comes to him.
Farmer:Excuse me, Uncle. Can you tell me know to get to the hospital, please?
Uncle Sam: Lie down in the middle of the street and you’ll soon be at a hospital.
Farmer: Please set an example to me.
Uncle Sam: I think you come to our city at the first time. It’s much more beautiful than the field. Is that right?
Farmer: Yes, uncle. But it is built on the field.
Uncle Sam’s face turns red.
9 Where Is the Hat?
Jack is a little goose. He has a lovely hat. He likes wearing it very much. But when he sits, his hat can’t stay on his head.
He puts his hat down and begins to play game with the hat. When he gets tired of the game, things are not the same.
He can’t find his hat. Where is it? Jack thinks hard. He looks up and down, and walks here and there. He can’t find his hat yet.
At this time, his mother comes in. As soon as she sees Jack, she cries, “Oh, my dear! Don’t be foolish. Your hat is on your head.”
Jack feels very foolish. He doesn’t want to wear his hat on his head.
10 Two dogs
A man has two dogs: a hound and a housedog. He trains the hound to help him hurt and teaches the housedog to watch the house. When he returns home after a day’s hunt, he always gives the house-dog some meat. The hound feels very angry. He says unhappily to the housedog, “Where I work very hard outside, you share my food.” “Don’t blame me, my friend. You should blame the master. He doesn’t teach me to hurt, but to share other’s food,” the housedog answers.

11 The Sports Meeting in the Forest
There are many animals in the forest. Today is a fine day. Animals are having a sport meeting.
Monkey, Fox, Panda, Rabbit and Bear are running. Look! Rabbit is the first. Fox and Monkey are the second. Bear is the third. The other animals are shouting, “Bear! Come on! Bear! Com e on!” And look there, Duck and Pig are doing high jump. Pig is too fat, he can’t jump very
high. So Duck is the champion. Here! Cat and Squirrel(松鼠) are climbing a tree. Cat is ill. So he is the last, but he does his best.
This sports meeting is wonderful. The animals are very happy!
12 Big Ben
Big Ben is not the name of a man. It is a name of the clock. It is in London. London is the capital city of England. The big clock has four faces. So no matter where you stand, you can read the face of the clock. The hands are about four meter long.
If you go to London, you may want to visit the house of the Parliament. In that place you will find Big Ben sits at the top of the clock tower in the House of the Parliament. The big clock makes a very loud noise. “Ding dong. Ding dong”- the clock strikes(敲打)every quarter of an hour.
13 Who Pours Ink on My Chair?
Donny is a seven year old boy. He goes to school every day. The school is near his home. So he goes there on foot and comes back home on time. But today, he is late. His mother asks him, “Why do you go to the headmaster’s office?”
“Because the teacher asks us a question in class and nobody can answer it, but I can.” “It’s good to answer the teacher’s question.” “But the question is ‘Who pours ink on my chair?’”
14 Outside Games
There are many outside game like running, skating, swimming, horse-racing, hunting, flying kites, walking-races. Of course, football is an out game. Basketball, badminton and so on are also outside game. Some people like outside games, but others like indoor games. They like playing billiard, chess, cards, table tennis..
Outdoor games invoke more and faster movement. Some active people like them. Indoor games are quiet and involve less movement.

15 Two Little Monkeys
The monkey mother has two little monkeys. She likes the younger, not the other.
One day, they were playing in a forest when a wolf came running at them. The monkey ran away with the younger monkey in a hurry and left the older alone. She climbed up a tree and held the younger in her arms.
After some time, the wolf went away slowly. The monkey took the baby out of her arms. She was surprised to see that the baby had died, for the baby was held in arms too highly. Very long time later, she remembered to look for the older baby. The older baby was hiding in a wood. So he saved himself.
16 The King and His Stories
Once there was a king. He likes to write stories, but his stories were not good. As people were afraid of him, they all said his stories were good.
One day the king showed his stories to a famous writer. He waited the writer to praise these stories. But the writer said his stories were so bad that he should throw them into fire. The king got very angry with him and sent him to prison.
After some time, the king set him free. Again he showed him some of his new stories and asked what he thought of them.
After reading them, the writer at once turned to the soldiers and said: “ Take me back to prison, ple ase.”
17 Which Skirt to Wear?
Time is 8 years old, and follows her own ideas. When her parents tell her to do something, she always doesn’t do it.
Today, she will go to a friend’s birthday party. She is now choosing skirt to wear. She has three skirts: a blue skirt, a white one and a yellow one.
She asks her father, “Which one is the best?” her father says, “I think the blue one is the best.” Then she asks her mother, “Which one do you think is the best?” Her mother answers, “ The white one , of course!” Tina says, “Thank you.”
Then she puts on the yellow shirt and goes out.
18 Three Foxes
Once there were three foxes, they worked together. They lived a happy life. Little by little, the youngest fox became lazy, and often quarreled with the other foxes. The eldest had to leave, and the second fox was driven off, too. Looking at the warm house with a lot of good food in it, the youngest fox smiled. The eldest fox opened a new hill again. The second eldest fox dug a pool. Two of them because rich soon. The youngest fox ate up the food left by the other two foxes. At last, it felt so cold and hungry that it could not stand up.
19 Naughty Brother
Donny is my little brother. He is a naughty boy.
On Sunday morning Donny went into the yard and played with a dog. Sometimes a bird would come down to stay on the top’s of the dog’s house. Then Donny threw a stone at it. Suddenly the little boy began crying. Mother ran to Donny and asked him what was wrong. He said, “I’ve broken sister’s plate. She has beaten me.” “Why?” “I threw it at a bird, and it went straight to the plate.”
Such was my naught brother.
20 Mike and the Pot(锅)
One day, Mike’s mother needed a po t. She asked Mike to borrow one from her friend. So Mike went to the friend’s house. She gave him a big pot. On the way home Mike put it down on the road and looked at it. It was made of clay and had three legs.
Then he said to the pot, “You have three legs and I have only two. You can carry me for a few minutes.” Then Mike sat down inside the pot. But the pot didn’t move.
Mike got angry and broke it then carried the
broke pot home. His mother was angry. “You are stupid.” She said. But Mike thought, “I’m not stupid. Only a stupid person carried something with three legs.”
21 Sun the Ice
Once a simpleton’s wife told him to buy some ice.
Two hours later, he didn’t come back. She wanted to know why he didn’t come back and went out to have a look. She saw he was standing in the sun at the gate and watching the ice melting.
“What’s the matter?” She asked him. “Why don’t you bring it in?”
“I saw the ice was wet and I was afraid that you would scold(责备) me so I’m running it dry.” The simpleton(傻子)answered.
22 A Silly Man
Fred was going to school. When he passed a park, he saw a man sawing a big branch from a tree. The man was on a ladder and the ladder was against the big branch he was sawing. “Hi, it is dangerous.” Fred shouted. “After you cut off the branch, you will fall, too.” But the man didn’t
believe him, and said angrily, “Go away, you little thing. It’s none of your business.”
Fred could do nothing, so he left. He didn’t go far before he heard something crashed. He rushed back and found the man lying on the ground.
Fred asked some men for help. They carried the man to the hospital.
23 Be careful what you wish for
A couple had been married for 25 years and were celebrating their 60th birthdays, which fell on the same day.
During the celebration a fairy(仙女) appeared and said that because they had been such a loving couple for all 25 years, she would give them one wish each.
The wife wanted to travel around the world. The fairy waved her hand, and boom! She had the tickets in her hand.
Next, it was the husband's turn. He paused for a moment, and then said shyly, "well, I’d like to have a woman 30 years younger than me."
The fairy picked up her wand, and boom! he was ninety.
24 The change for a reward
A lady lost her handbag. It was found by an honest little boy and returned to her. Looking in her purse, she commented, "Hmmm... That's funny. When I lost my bag there was a $20 bill in it. Now there are twenty $1 bills."
The boy quickly replied, "That's right, lady. The last time I found a lady's purse, she didn't have any change for a reward."
25 You're Right
Once Mr. Henry went to a small town with high mountains all around it. It was a quiet and cool place and some rich people liked to go there for their holidays. A week later, before Mr. Henry left the town, he paid thirty pounds for a parrot. When he came back, he began to teach the bird to speak. He tried his best, but it learned only one sentence, “You're right.”He was disappointed and said to the bird angrily,“How foolish you are!”
“You're right,”said the parrot.
The next day Mr. Henry took the bird to the market and wanted to sell it for eighty pounds. Before long a fat man came and looked at the parrot carefully. Then he asked, “How much is it,
sir?”
Mr. Henry didn't hurry to answer and said, “It's a clever bird, you know. It can speak and sing.”Then he said to the bird, “Are you really worth eighty pounds, my dear?
“You're right,”said the parrot.
The fat man liked it at once and bought it. When he took it home he asked it a lot of questions, but it could only say, “You are right.”
He felt very sorry for it and said to himself angrily, “Why did I spend eighty pounds on such a foolish bird? What a fool I am!
“You're right, answered the parrot. Hearing this, the man couldn't help laughing and set it free.
26 A Funny Way to Make Friends
“What’s the matter, Bob?” asks Mrs. White, “Why do you look so sad?”
“Mum, I wish we can stay in New York. I have many friends there .We are new here, and I have no friend now.” Bob says.
“You will soon make friends here,” says Mrs. White, “Wait and see!”
At this time, someone is knocking at the door. Mrs. White opens it .A woman with a nice smile
stands there.
“Hello,” she says, “I’m Mrs. Green, I live next door.”

Tom and Bob are about the same age. Soon they are having the cake and milk.
“Can you stay and play with me?” asks Bob.
“Yes, I can stay an hour.” Tom says.
“Let’s play football, OK?” says Bob, “I have a little dog. It will play with us. ”
Tom doesn’t have a dog. He finds it is fun to play with Bob and the little dog.
“I’m glad you live next door,” says Bob, “Now I have someone to play together.”
“Mother says we will soon be good friends,” Tom answers.
“I’m glad you mother wants two eggs, “says Bob.
“She doesn’t really want the eggs,” Tom laughs, “She just wants to make friends with your mother!”

27 The Poor Frog
There is a big, fat frog living in a small pond. He knows every plant and stone in the pond very well, and he can swim across it easily. He is the biggest creature in the pond. The other small creatures always swim behind him. So he thinks he is too great, and very happy to live there.
One day, when he is catching flies for breakfast, a beautiful dragonfly passes by. “You’re
a very fine frog.” she says, “Why don’t you live in a bigger pond? Come to my pond. You’ll fi nd a lot of frogs there. You’ll meet some nice fish, and you’ll see many beautiful flowers. Living in a big pond is wonderful!”
“Now I find living in this small pond is dull,” the frog thinks. So he says to the dragonfly, “OK, I’ll go with you.”
But when he begins to live in the big pond, he finds he doesn’t like it at all. It is full of strange plants. The fish don’t like him, and he is the smallest frog there…He is lonely and unhappy. He sits on a stone and says sadly to himself, “I don’t like living here. I think I’ll go home tomorrow.”
But a hungry heron(鹭) flies down and catches him. The frog becomes the heron’s supper. What a poor frog!

28 A Telephone Call
One Sunday morning, Mrs. Green is waiting for an important telephone call, but she remembers she has no bread in the house, so she leaves her baby Kate at home and says to her five-year-old son, Jim, “I am going to the supermarket, Jim, and I will come back in a few minutes.”
But when she’s out, the telephone rings and Jim answers.

“Why are you crying?” ask the lamb’s friends.
“The wolf is going to eat me tonight,” says the lamb.
“Don’t worry, we will help you,” the friends say.
At night, the little cat hides behind the tree near the lamb’s house. The little dog hid es behind the door. The little horse and the little elephant stand behind the house.
At eight o’clock, the wolf comes to the lamb’s house.
“It’s so dark. I can’t see anything,” says the wolf, “Well, I’ll light my candle.” The wolf walks
to the tree; he wants to light the candle behind the tree.
At this time, the little cat jumps out and scratches the wolf’s face. The wolf wants to run away. The little dog runs out from the house and bites the wolf’s leg. Then the little horse kicks the wolf. Finally, the little elephant throws the wolf into the river with his long nose.
The little lamb, the little cat, the little dog, the little horse and the little elephant all laugh. They know: Unity is strength. They will be good friends forever.

30 The Cat and the Tiger
A cat and a tiger are good friends; they usually talk to each other and play together. They
look the same .But the cat is very small, and the tiger is very big.
They hunt food in the same way. The cat is a good hunter, but the tiger isn’t .Every day the cat can find something to eat, but the tiger can’t .Some days the tiger can’t find any food at all.
One day, the tiger goes to see the cat. He sa ys, “Friend Cat, I want your help. I am bigger than you, but I can’t hunt as well as you. Can you teach me?”
The cat thinks for a long time. At last he says, “Well, Friend Tiger, I will teach you to be a good hunter.”
Day after day he teaches the tiger. He teaches him how to hide in a tree. He teaches him how to walk very, very quietly. He teaches him how to jump ahead. He teaches him how to run very fast.
The cat is a god teacher, and the tiger learns fast.
At last the cat says, “Friend Tiger, I do not have any more tricks.”
The tiger begins to think. He says to himself, “The cat can not teach me anything else. I may as well eat him up.”
Fast as he can, the tiger jumps at the cat. But
just as fast, the cat climbs up the tree! The tiger lands on his face! The tiger is mad!
“You don’t teach me that,” says the tiger,” I do not know how to climb up a tree!”
The cat laughs. “Do you think I will teach you all my tricks? I am small, but I’m not silly!”
And the cat doesn’t teach the tiger anything else.

31 How Much Is One Apple?
Bill is seven years old. He is a clever boy and a good student. He can work out all the problems in his books quickly. And his favorite subject is math.
One day, on his way to school, Bill passes a fruit shop. There is a small blackboard at the door of the shop, and it says, “Apples-six for five dollars.”
An idea comes to Bill. He goes into the shop.
“How much are the apples?” he asks the shop assistant.
“Six for five dollars.”
“But I don’t want six apples.”
“How many apples do you want?”
“It’s not a question of how many apples I want. It is a problem about math.”
“What do you mean? Asks the shop assistant.
“Well , if six apples are five dollars, then five apples are worth four dollars, four apples are worth three dollars, three apples are worth two dollars, two apples are worth one dollar, and one apple is worth nothing. It’s not necessary for me to pay you.”
Bill picks out a good apple, and begins to eat and walks happily out of the shop. The shop assistant looks at the young boy with such surprise that he cannot say a word.

32 The Soldier and the Witch
One day, a soldier meets a witch. The witch says to the soldier, “Could you help me, young man? Climb up that big tree. When you reach the top of the tree, you will find a lot of money there. You can take as much as you want.”
“But what shall I give you?” asks the soldier, “Surely you are not doing this for nothing.”
“I only want a small red box,” answers the witch, “My grandmother put it there last time.
With the help of the witch, the soldier gets lots of money. He also gets the red box.
“What do you want do with the box?” asks the soldier.
“It’s none of your business,” answers the witch, “You have your money. Give me my red box.” The soldier doesn’t give her the box. Instead, he kills the witch.
Then the soldier goes back to his hometown, and becomes a rich man.
But soon he spends all his money and becomes a poor man. The soldier thinks of the red box and opens it .There is nothing in it .But soon a big dog appears. It stands before him and says, “What can I do for you?”
The soldier asks for a lot of things and becomes rich again.
One day, the soldier sees the Princess, She is very beautiful. The soldier loves her. He asks his dog to steal her at night.
The next morning, someone hears the Princess crying in the soldier’s house. The King knows this, so he kills the soldier angrily that day.

33 The Businessman and His Sons

The businessman has three sons. He calls
three sons to him when he comes back home.

The second son buys straw back home. He spends one hundred Yuan.
The youngest son buys a candle and brings it home. He spends only one Yuan.
His brothers ask him, “What good is a candle?”
“Wait and see,” says the youngest brother. He lights the candle and the room is “full” right now, from wall to wall, form ceiling to floor, fills with light.
The old businessman says happily, “My youngest son is indeed the cleverest of all!”
At last, the businessman leaves all his business to the youngest son.

34 Whose Dog?
Two beggars are walking on a quiet road. A sad-looking dog is following them.
“What a bad day, Joe,” one beggar says, “Today we don’t have any money and we can’t have anything to eat.”
“We will find something.” The other beggar says cheerfully.
At the moment, a car is coming to them very quickly, the two beggars move away quickly, but the dog still stays in the middle of the road. The driver tries to stop the car, but it is too late. The car hits the dog and kills it. The driver gets
out of the car and goes to the two beggars.
“Poor little dog.” one of the beggars says sadly.
“I’m sorry,” the driver says, “I try to av oid your dog but it is too late.” Then he takes his wallet and gives twenty dollars to the beggars.
“Is that all right?” the driver asks.
“Yes, thank you, sir.” the first beggar says.
The driver gets into the car and drives away.
“Poor little dog.” the first beggar puts the money into his pocket.

35 The Stolen Smells
There is a poor student who lives in a small town. He has very little money and has to live in a small room near a restaurant. His room is near the kitchen. The restaurant owner is a very selfish
man. No one likes him. But he is a good cook and many people come to his restaurant.
One day, when the owner is walking quietly in his kitchen, he hears the poor student talking to his friend.
“You aren’t very happy, I think. Because you are living in a poor room like this,”his friend says.
“Oh, no,” says the student, “I am busy with my studies and I pay little attention to my room.”
“But you have no money to buy nice things to eat.”
“Yes, it’s true. I eat only rice. But the smells from the kitchen make the rice nice indeed,” says the student.
The restaurant owner is angry. The student is stealing the smells from the kitchen! He decides to take him to court.
After the selfish owner telling his thing, the judge says, “the student is wrong.” The restaurant owner is happy and the poor student is very afraid. What can he do? He has only a little money.
The judge asks the student if he has money. They student takes five coins and gives them to the judge.
“Let the coins fall into your left hand,” says the judge. The court is very quiet and everyone。
