Tazieff, the Polish scientist, went to Lake Kivu in the Congo in 1948 to observe a new volcano he called Kituro. Having set up his camp close to the volcano, he managed to take brilliant photographs. However, he had to leave in order not to be surrounded by a river of liquid rock and waited until the volcano became quiet. Two days later, he returned and climbed into the mouth of Kituro to take photographs and measure temperatures.
