Last year, when he was just 15 -year-old, Jack Andraka made international headlines by inventing a new, low -cost test that can test the early stages of a deadly form of cancer.
According to the high school student of grade two, his mother, Jane, inspired him to work on the new testing tool. Two years ago, she got rat bite fever — apotentially deadly disease spread by animals like rats. She sought medical help, but doctors were unable to diagnose her, sending her home with some penicillin, which ended up curing her.
“ After realizing how useless our testing system is, I decided I wanted to get really involved in diagnosing different diseases and making sure you can instantly know why you're getting sick,” Andraka said.
The Crownsville, Maryland, resident developed a simple yet revolutionary dip -stick test for levels of mesothelin ( 间皮素), a biomarker for early stage pancreatic cancer ( 胰腺癌) found in blood and urine.
Jack's invention, for which he was awarded the grand prize of $75,000 in scholarship funds at the 2012 Intel Science Fair in December, means that patients now have a simple method to detect pancreatic cancer before it reaches final stages.
His new sensor has proved to be nearly 100% accurate, 28 times faster, 28 times less expensive, and over 100 times more sensitive than current tests.
This year, Andraka is planning to hand the ground -breaking technology over to a company to manufacture and market the sensor. He predicts that it could be available to the general public in three to five years.
21.What made Andraka want to invent a new disease sensor?

C. A rat bite fever.
D. His mother’ s inspiration.
22. What does the underlined “ biomarker

A council has become the first in England to shorten its school summer to less than five weeks. Barnsley, in south Yorkshire, has ruled that all local authority schools will stay open until the end of July and have a two-week autumn break
half term.
Council bosses said the traditional six -week break led to a‘ learning loss’ and many children may not remember they had been learning about the previous years. According to the Times Tim Cheetham, the council’spokesman for education, suggested that school summer holidays should be no longer than five weeks to greatly improve pupils5 educational achievement.
Brighton and Hove council is also considering shortening the summer holidays to allow parents to have the
opportunity to take cheaper breaks in the autumn term.
But the move has left some head teachers angry that they were not asked for opinions about the change. Mr. Bowen,
the headmaster of Horizon Community College in Barnsley, told The Guardian: t4We have been left puzzled that such a big
change is being brought in without any real survey with head teachers. This will affect our ability to employ high-quality teachers because they will not want a shorter break. There is also the fact that most of the schools in the area probably
won^ come on board with jt so everyone will have different holidays. It will be a disaster in terms of attendance.
Parents are unlikely to be pleased with the short summer as the two -week break in the autumn half term will be in late October and early November—long after the holiday season in Europe has ended. It might also cause disaster for parents
who have children at different schools, as it means they will have to make different childcare arrangements.
25.Why did Barnsley decide to shorten the summer break?
A. To avoid the pupils’ learning loss.
B. To enjoy cheaper breaks.
C. To meet students’ need.
D. To make full use of terms.
26. What does the underlined word“ it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The board.
B. The change.
C. The term.
D. The guadian.
27.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The disaster for parents.
B. Making different childcare arrangements.
C. The holiday season in Europe.
D. Parents’ reflection to the summer break.
28. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The childcare arrangements.
B. The shortened autumn break.
C. The shortened summer break.
D. The six -week break.

Manufacturers (制造商) have made it increasingly difficult for individuals or independent repair people to fix electronics.
A growing movement is fighting back.
Fifty years ago, if your television broke you could bring it to the local electronics shop to be repaired. These days,
a broken TV likely means a trip to Best Buy for a new one.
Electronics have become harder to fix. This is, in part, because they ’ vebecome more complex. But some of the
problem is by design. Manufacturers have increasingly restricted repair information to their repair centers, leaving customers and independent repair people unable to deal with even simple problems. It’ s just easier and to buy something new.
A growing number of people, seeing this as an unreasonable state of affairs, are fighting back. In a so -called “ right to repair” movement, this loose association of customer advocates, repair professionals and ordinary individuals are working
to create laws that would make it harder for companies to keep repair information as secret.
4tMost people experience the problem, but they have no idea that there's a solution, and they have no idea that the manufacturers are behaving badly, says Gay Gordon -Byme, the executive director of The Repair Association.
Gordon -Byrne ’ s organization, a nonprofit that struggles for right to repair laws, was founded three years ago. Over the
past year, the group has started to introduce making laws at the state level.
iFixit, a website that provides repair instructions and DIY advice and tools, approaches the problem from a different
angle: if companies won't provide us with the information to fix our own products, weMl figure it out ourselves. The site
functions as a sort of repair Wiki, with some one million users sharing knowledge. Its CEO, Kyle Wiens, came to the right
to repair movement after working as a technician at an authorized Apple repair center.
“ The manufacturers are not going to be able to keep this up forever, ” Wiens says. “It ’s just a matter of time
32. We can learn from the third paragraph that .
A. the design of the products are unique
B. it is easy to solve the problems of electronics
C. it seems more convenient to buy a new electronic
D. the repairmen ’ s skills need to be developed
33. What does Gay Gordon -Byme think of the manufacturers? behaviors?
A. Reasonable.
B. Not acceptable.
C. Dishonest.
D. Popular.
34.What’ s Wiens ’ attitude to the final goal of the repair movement?
A.Optimistic.
B. Concerned.
C. Doubtful.
D. Worried.
35.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.The Fight between Companies and Customers

My father is the man I respect him most. Strict as he may be, he never fail to show his care and consideration. Once I broke a neighbor window. Seen nobody around, I ran away immediate. When Dad came home, he noticed my uneasiness but asked me what had happened. I could only tell him truth.
