Should Parents Accompany Their Freshmen Children?
Every year on the first day of the new term, usually in September, this is a familiar scene around the gate of most colleges and universities: the freshmen are accompanied by their parents or other family relatives to start their study career.
Parents, of course, hold strong reasons for their acts: my son is used to being taken good care of at home and has much trouble in dealing with campus life on his own; my daughter should focus on her study and my presence helps save a lot of trouble she may encounter; I want to see/ make sure that my child is safe from any risks and live a comfortable life in a new surrounding.
As I see it, it is absolutely unnecessary for parents to attend to their college-age children to such a degree. It is true that the freshmen are short of experience to handle some problems in going through the formalities such as registering and arranging lodging, but the problems they will encounter are also a good opportunity for these young people to develop their ability to lead an independent life. And this ability is so important that it determines, to a large extent, whether the student will be successful in his study and life on campus.
In brief, it is time parents stopped accompanying their freshmen children on the first day of the term. Be confident in your child and see him/her grow mature.

Dear Freshmen,
I am a sophomore in the computer Science of XXX University. I would like to say a few words to you, which I hope would be of some help to you.
To begin with, the change of ideas is of most importance for the freshman to adapt to campus life. During the middle school days, we used to be dependent on our teachers at school and parents at home. However, the life and study at college require the young to think, judge and act on his own. Though we can still turn to teachers and parents when encountering difficulty, it is ourselves who have the final say. Here I want to stress the ability to teach ourselves. Confronted with so many courses, most of which are demanding and profound, we should know better than to be satisfied with classroom learning; extensive reading outside of the class is not only necessary but also determines the level of our success.
What’s more, to build a good relation net is another mission we should place emphasis on. Learning to get along with classmates and forming new friendships improve the quality of campus life and help our future career.
Third, we should develop a sound attitude towards pressure and stress. It is reported that many college students suffer from psychological problems. The ability to relax and lighten up is as important as the ability to learn.
Last but not least, learning a foreign language well is a must. With a good command of English or other languages, we will open a door leading to a new world.

The commercial advertising by stars is getting more and more pervasive. Turn on your TV and chances are that a famous movie actor is boasting of the enormous benefits of using a shampoo or a pop singer is convincing
us how a medicine cures his sore throat. Obviously, the impact on the public cannot be ignored and due consideration should be given to this rampant phenomenon.
It is true that the stars can take advantage of their popularity to influence customers, and in this way the manufactures attain their goal of making huge profits/ leading the manufacturers to make enormous profits. However, problems arise when the famous figure makes irresponsible advertising by exaggerating the performance and effect of a product or service. In fact, the stars’ action of this kind misleads the consumers and represents a breach of their rights.
It is high time something was done to remedy the situation. First, the public figures should give priority to the public’s interest and practice self-discipline in face of temptation. On the other hand, consumers should become more sensible and rational by developing good shopping skills and identifying the traps set in some commercials. Most important of all, the government and relevant institutions should set up laws and regulations to ban some star-centered advertising, such as medicines and drugs. Only in this way can we create a healthy shopping environment.
