初中英语拓展阅读(2)ARed is used in many American expressions. It can be used to show happiness, as in the expression “a red-letter day”. This is a day when something special happens. The expressi on is probably based on church customs. For almost 600 years, church calendars have been marked with red to show special holy days. Today’s calendars are still marked that way with the dates of holidays and special days printed in red.The expressio n “a red-letter day” is often heard in everyday life. “A red-letter day” is a day that people are especially happy. It may be a day that you have long waited for, a wedding day, for example. Or it may be a day with a happy surprise. You might tell a friend that yesterday was a red-letter day, because you won some money in the lottery.“Rolling out the red carpet” is another commonly heard expression. It describes an especially warm welcome of any kind. A city may “roll out the red carpet” for its baseball t eam, when the team arrives home after winning a championship. A group of supporters go to the airport to greet the team. The red-carpet welcome includes a lot of cheering by thousands of fans, a parade, music and speeches of praise by local politicians.Red is also used in some expressions that are not happy. “Red-handed” is one. To be caught “red-handed” is to be found in an act of wrong doing. The evidence is clear. You are guilty.Today we use the expression to be caught “red-handed” in situation s that are not serious. For example, a mother might say she caught her son red-handed, taking cookies out of the cookie jar.Choose the best answer for each question.( )1. In other words, lots of English people like the idea of sports. A lot of them watch sports on TV. But the number of the people who take part in sports is quite small.(6) On the whole, English people prefer to be fat rather than thin. The most popular sport in England is football.(7) Football is played on Saturday afternoons in most towns and the supporters of a certain team will travel from one end of the country to the other to watch their team play. There are four divisions of the football league.(8) Not surprisingly, the best teams are in the first division. But the best supporters are often in the fourth division. You have to be a good supporter to watch the fourth division football! Many other sports are also played in England,(9) such as golf, in which you try to knock a ball into a hole; basketball, in which you try to get a ball through a net; tennis, in which you try to hit a ball so that your opponent can not hit it. As you see, if the ball had not been invented, there would have been no sport.Of course, that is not quite true. Athletics isn’t played with a ball, nor horse racing. AI is a group of technologies that help machines get, understand and use information to do tasks.AI's recent developments have got a lot of social attention. Some people have welcomed AI because it makes things possible. For example, AI will have a big influence on areas like medicine and engineering. But this attention has also produced a lot of fear. Especially, many workers are worrying that AI could make them lose their jobs.According to a recent study, nearly five percent of jobs will disappear because of AI. In some industries,AI is already doing the work that people used to do, such as assembling(装配)cars, digging the coal and lifting goods. Self- driving cars and trucks controlled by AI will also take away the driver's jobs in the future. On the other hand, AI will also create many new jobs for people. More people will be needed to write programmes for AI systems(系统)and they will set up and work on them, too. Meanwhile, jobs that require feelings, excellent communication skills with people will not be replaced(取代)by AI. These includes jobs in fields like teaching, nursing and personal training.AI is here. 2020九年级英语下册 Unit 5 China and the World Topic 2 英文拓展阅读:郑和下西洋的故事素材
英文拓展阅读:郑和下西洋的故事英文:A Treasure Ship CaptainEarly in the 15th century, a huge fleet of ships set sail from Nanjing. It was the first of a series of voyages that would, for a brief period, establish China as the leading power of the age. The voyage was led by Zheng He, the most important Chinese adventurer of all time and one of the greatest sailors the world has ever known. In fact, some people think he was the original model for the legendary Sinbad the Sailor. In 1371, Zheng He was born in what is now Yunnan Province to Muslim parents, who named him Ma Sanpao. When he was 11 years old, invading Ming armies captured Ma and took him to Nanjing. There he was castrated and made to serve as a eunuch in the imperial household.Ma befriended a prince there who later became the Yong Le Emperor, one of the Ming Dynasty's most distinguished. Brave, strong, intelligent and totally loyal, Ma won the trust of the prince who, after ascending the throne, gave him a new name and made him Grand Imperial Eunuch.Yong Le was an ambitious emperor who believed that China's greatness would be increased with an "open-door" policy regarding international trade and diplomacy. In 1405, he ordered Chinese ships to sail to the Indian Ocean, and put Zheng He in charge of the voyage. Zheng went on to lead seven expeditions in 28 years, visiting more than 40 countries.Zheng's fleet had more than 300 ships and 30,000 sailors. The largest vessels, 133-meter-long "treasure ships", had up to nine masts and could carry a thousandpeople. Along with a Han and Muslim crew, Zheng opened up trade routes in Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. The voyages helped expand foreign interest in Chinese goods such as silk and porcelain. In addition, Zheng He brought exotic foreign items back to China, including the first giraffe ever seen there. At the same time, the fleet's obvious strength meant that the Emperor of China commanded respect and inspired fear all over Asia. While Zheng He's main aim was to show the superiority of Ming China, he often got involved in the local politics of places he visited. In Ceylon, for instance, he helped restore the legitimate ruler to the throne. On the island of Sumatra, now part of Indonesia, he defeated the army of a dangerous pirate and took him to China for execution.Though Zheng He died in 1433 and was probably buried at sea, a grave and small monument to him still exist in Jiangsu Province. Three years after Zheng He's death, a new emperor banned the construction of oceangoing ships, and China's brief era of naval expansion was over. Chinese policy turned inward, leaving the seas clear for the rising nations of Europe.Opinions vary on why this happened. Whatever the reason, conservative forces gained the upper hand, and China's potential for world domination was not realized. Records of Zheng He's incredible voyages were burned. Not until the early 20th century did another fleet of comparable size take to the seas.中文:15世纪初,一支浩浩荡荡的船队从南京启航。
九年级英语第四单元《单元话题》拓展阅读
九年级英语第四单元单元话题阅读Passage 1Once there was a man traveling in a faraway village. As he was passing the elephants,he suddenly stopped. He found that these huge elephants were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg.No chains(锁链),no cages. It was clear that the elephants could,at any time, break away from their ropes but for some reason, they did not.He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and didn’t try to get away.“Well”, the trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them.As they grow up, they still believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can hold them, so they never try to break free.”How could it be? These animals could at any time break free from their ropes. But because they were always stuck right where they were, they believed theycouldn’t.Just like the elephants, how many of us go through life believing that we cannot do something, just because we failed at it once before? In a word, we should never give up the struggle in life.Passage 2To write a great news story, you have to make sure it is correct, relevant (相关的) and fresh. For a start, all the information in a story must be correct. Not only the spelling and grammar, but also the facts.Any mistakes that appear (出现) in a story can get a newspaper into big trouble. For example, if a newspaper said that Yang Liwei was the first man to go into space, it would be wrong. He wasn’t the first. The newspaper would probably lose lots of readers because of that mistake.A news story is not only correct, but also relevant to its readers.People are mostly interested in news that happens near to them. That is why you care more about what happens at your school than at American schools. It is also why newspapers in Beijing don ’t talk about much news in Shanghai or Hong Kong. Finally, news must always be fresh. When you pick up your evening newspaper, you want to read about news that happened that day.You don’t want to read about news from last week! So, now you know what makes a good news story.Have a good lookat our newspaper and see if it is full of good news! You can try writing a news story for our newspaper like a real reporter.Passage 3Long ago there was a poor farmer called Fred.Fred and his wife, Doris lived happily together in their small old house. One winter night, the Luck Fairy (仙女) visited them.“Fred, you’re a good farmer.I’d like to give you a wish,” sai d the Luck Fairy.“A wish?” said Fred.Fred and Doris smiled at each other. Then Fred said, “Thank you, Luck Fairy. We’re very healthy and happy.”“Though we’re old, we still work in the field every day,” said Doris.“You work very hard but you make very lit tle money. Would you like some gold coins?” asked the Luck Fairy.“Oh no, my dear Luck Fairy. We’re poor. But we have enough food to eat.” replied Fred.“You can use the gold coin to buy some clothes. The winter here is very cold,” said Luck Fairy.“Though we haven’t got many clothes, we’ve got enough,” saidDoris.“Well, what about a nice new house?” asked Luck Fairy.“Thank you, but I love my small old house very much.I’ve lived here since I was born.I don’t need a new house,” said Fred.“You’re quite different from other people.I like you very much,” said the Luck Fairy.“I wish you happiness and luck forever.” Then the Luck Fairy disappeared and never came back.Passage 4One day a huge rock fell from a mountain. The rock rolled down and stopped in the middle of a road in a village. It was like a big ball. Some of the strongest men in the village tried to lift the rock. But no matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t move it away. They tried to push it, they tried to roll it, they tried to pull it with ropes but nothing worked.“Well”, they agreed.“There’s nothing we can do about it.We’ll have to build another road.”All the time a young boy about 12 years old was standing by.“Excuse me,sir,” he said, “but I think I can help you move the rock.”“You?” they shouted,“What are you talking about? All of us have just tried, and even together we can’t move it at all.” The men all laughed at the boy.The next morning some people came into the street. One of them shouted, “The rock is gone. It’s gone.” More people ran out in to the street to see.In fact, no one could see the rock anywhere.“This is impossible,” they said,“Where has it gone?” The twelve-year-old boy stood out, smiling.“I moved it last night,” he said, “I dug a deep hole next to the rock and the rock rolled down into the hole by itself. Then I covered it with earth.”Passage 5When we think about writing poems or understanding poetry, we often think that it’s hard to do. But nothing could be further from the truth. Are you a fan of the latest pop group? Do you like to listen to music? Did your mother ever sing a song to you as she tried to get you to sleep? Songs are just poems set to music. They have both the wonderful words of poetry and the sweet sound of music to go along with.Writing poems is not really all that hard. Through writing poems, you learn how to use a language well. You have to use your imagination. You have to choose the best word to describe exactly how you feel or what you see. You might be trying to describe a beautiful sunset. You think that the words “melting in the distance” or “dropping quietly against the sea” would be a good w ay to describe it. You have to decide which would be better. Would you like to write a poem? Go ahead. It’s really not that difficult.。

ON a small hill in Huaping (华坪), Yunnan, there is a small school. However, over the past 12 years, it has rewritten the fate (命运) of 1,804 poor girls by sending them to universities.Zhang Guimei, now 63, is the principal (校长) of this school. She began teaching in Huaping —one of China’s poorest areas — twenty years ago. The teacher wondered why many girls in her class would just one day stop coming to school. After some investigation s, Zhang learned that they were from very poor families. These girls were forced to work or get married at a young age. “We often say that we want every child to have a fair start,” she said. “But these poor girls don’t even have a chance to stand on the starting line.”Zhang wanted to change this. She spent years trying to raise money. Finally, in 2008, she set up the Huaping High School for Girls. It’s China’s first and only free public high school for girls.Zhang gets up at 5 a.m. every day to turn on the lights on each floor of the teachingbuilding. Many girls are timid (胆怯的), the principal explains. She wants them to feel safer on their way to classes. After years of tiring work, Zhang is now in poor health, but the school and the children matter more than anything else in her mind.Zhang’s story has warmed hearts all around China and inspired many to follow in her footsteps. Zhou Yunli was one of her students. After she finished university, she heard that her alma mater (母校) was short of math teachers. 拓展训练 2020年中考英语专题分类卷 题型二阅读理解(任务型阅读)11-20附答案
题型二阅读理解(任务型阅读)11-20Passage 11( 2017.成都)Oct.16 is World Food Day. The UN started the day in 1979. It's used to remind people not to waste food and fight hunger.A big number of people in the world still don't have enough food to eat. Food shortage(匮乏)is a big problem worldwide. Right now, there are more than 1,000 million hungry people in the world according to the UN. Many chldren go to sleep hungry, and 15 million of them die of hunger each year. There are several reasons why there are food shortages. First, there have been more droughts(干旱)and floods recently. Also,a growing population makes feeding everyone more difficult.Another big reason is food waste. Most people don't realize how much food they throw away every day. Sometimes we cook too much, or we don't use it before it goes bad. The average(平均的)person throws away 50kg of food every year. According to the UN, more than one third of all food produced worldwide goes to waste each year. That is over l,300,000 million kilograms of food being wasted. The amount of food wasted in Europe can feed 200 million people, and the food wasted in Latin America can feed 300 million a year.So think twice next time you want to throw away food. By cutting down on food waste, we could help put food on the empty plates of some hungry children. Only order as much food as you can eat at a restaurant. If you can't eat all you order, take the rest home. Don't be too picky about food so that you don't leave any on your plate. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it. Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don't buy too much. Don't cook too much. When you throw away food, you are not just wasting the food itself. Resources(资源)are also wasted while growing, transporting and cooking the food. These things all take energy, time and water.title: (1) on World Food Day(1)(2)(3)(4)(5)Passage 12 ( 2017.齐齐哈尔 )A little stream(小溪) ran down from a high mountain through many villages and forests. Then it reached a desert. "I went through so many difficulties. I should have no problem crossing the desert, "she thought. As she started, she found herself slowly vanishing (消失 ) into the sand. After many tries, she still failed. "Maybe I can't reach the ocean, " she said sadly to herself. At this time, a deep voice said, "If wind can cross the desert, so can a river. " It was the voice of the desert. But the little stream answered, "That's because the wind can fly, but I can not. ""That's because you can't give up what you are. Let yourself evaporate (蒸发)into the wind and it can take you across me," said the desert. " Give up what I am now?No !No ! " The little stream could not accept this idea. "The wind can carry the vapor(蒸汽) across the desert and let it leave as rain. The rain will form a river again, " said the desert. "And whether you're a river or vapor, your nature never changes. " After hearing this, the little stream went into the open arms of the wind. It carried her to the next stage of her life. The course of our lives is like the experience of the little stream. The mystery of the famous word collector ONE of the greatest contributors to the first Oxford (牛津) English Dictionary was also one of its most unusual. In 1879, Oxford University in England asked Prof. James Murray to serve as editor(编辑) for what was to be the most ambitious dictionary in the history of the English language. It would include every English word possible and would give not only the definition(定义) but also the history of the word and quotations(引用) showing how it was used.
This was a huge task, so Dr. Murray recruited (招募) volunteers from Britain, the United States, and the British colonies to search every newspaper, magazine, and book ever written in English. Hundreds of volunteers responded, including William Chester Minor. Dr. Minor was an American surgeon who had served in the Civil War and was now living in England. He gave his address as “Broadmoor, Crowthorne, Berkshire,” 50 miles from Oxford. Minor joined the army of volunteers sending words and quotations to Murray. Over the next 17 years, he became one of the staff’s most valued contributors. But he was also a mystery. Despite many invitations, he would always decline(拒绝) to visit Oxford. So in 1897, Murray finally decided to travel to Crowthorne himself. When he arrived, he found Minor locked in a book-lined cell at the Broadmoor Asylum(收容所) for the Criminally Insane(精神病犯罪者).
Murray and Minor became friends, sharing their love of words. Minor continued contributing to the dictionary, sending in more than
10,000 submissions in 20 years. Murray continued to visit Minor regularly, sometimes taking walks with him around the asylum grounds.
In 1910, Minor left Broadmoor for an asylum in his native America. Murray was at the pier (码头) to wave goodbye to his remarkable friend.
Minor died in 1920, seven years before the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was completed. The 12 volumes defined 414,825 words, and thousands of them were contributions from a very scholarly and dedicated asylum inmate.。
