Cyber-bullying

With the prevalence of social media and digital forums, cyber-bullying has become a serious social problem. Cyber-bullying can take place on social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, over digital devices like cell phones and computers. It includes behavior s like spreading lies and rumors to deliberately humiliate a targeted person, exerting language violence to victims, disclosing others’ privacy, etc.

Unlike the traditional bullying, this electronic bullying can remain anonymous, which makes it difficult for the offender to be caught or punished. Besides, the recent use of mobile applications and rise of smart-phones have yielded a more accessible form of cyber-bullying. As cyber-bullying is an intense form of psychological abuse, its victims usually suffer from depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. Some victims even drop out of school and experience suicidal tendencies.

Preventive actions should be taken against cyber-bullying. Firstly, campaigns should be

designed to educate people about how they can play a role in ending cyber-bullying. Secondly, related legislation should be made to facilitate its control. Last but not the least, parents, teachers and victims can make joint efforts to find possible solutions or remedies. Together, we can help conquer cyber-bullying and end this silent pandemic.
