He w a s a ssa ssina ted on A pr il 4, 1968 , in M em phis, T ennessee. He ha d gone to M em phis, T ennessee to su ppor t the str ik ing sa nita tion w or k er s. Dr . K ing w a s m u r der ed in 1968 ; how ever , it w a s not u ntil 1983 w hen C ongr ess voted to m a k e his bir thda y , J a nu a r y 15 , a na tiona l holida y (celebr a ted on the thir d M onda y of the m onth.)
