Major Characteristics of His Works
His unique subjects. The works portrayed uniquely American subjects and dealt largely with the lower strata of American society. His use of vernacular and colloquialism. Words are colloquial, concrete and direct in effect. Simple and even ungrammatical sentence structure are used. His humor and satire. Characterized by puns, straight-faced exaggeration, repetition and invective.
