That the fruits of the earth should all be laid out on tidy shelves in this provincial corner of Britain would have been unthinkable a few years ago, yet now it is takenfor granted.Once strange and exotic fruits that only the rich could afford, if not now part of everyone’s diet, are certainly part of our everyday shopping experience. A great deal of communicating is performed on a person-to-person basis by the simple means of speech. If we travel in buses, buy things in shops, or eat in restaurants, we are likely to have conversations where we give information or opinions, receive news or comment, and very likely have our views challenged by other members of society.Face-to-face contact is by no means the only form of communication and during the last two hundred years the art of mass communication has become of one of the dominating factors of contemporary society. Two things, above others, have caused the enormous growth of the communication industry. Firstly, inventiveness has led to advances in printing, telecommunications, photography, radio and television. Secondly, speed has revolutionized the transmission and reception of communications so that local news often takes a back seat to national news, which itself is often almost eclipsed by international news.No longer is the possession of information confined to a privileged minority. In the last century the wealthy man with his own library was indeed fortunate, but today there are public libraries. Forty years ago people used to flock to the cinema, but now far more people sit at home and turn on the TV to watch a programme that is being channeled into millions of homes.Communication is no longer merely concerned with the transmission of information. The modern communication industry influences the way people live in society and broadens their horizons by allowing access to information, education and entertainment. The printing, broadcasting and advertising industries are all involved with informing, educating and entertaining.Although a great deal of the material communicated by the mass media is very valuable to the individual and to the society of which he is a part, the vast modern network of communications is open to abuse. However, the mass media are with us for better, for worse, and there is no turning back.1.In the first paragraph the writer emphasizes the _________ of face-to-face contact in social settings.A natureB limitationC usefulnessD creativity2. It is implied in the passage that_______A local news used to be the only source of informationB local news still takes a significant placeC national news is becoming more popularD international news is the fastest transmitted news3. which of the following statement is INCORRECT?A To possess information used to be a privilegeB Public libraries have replaced private librariesC Communication means more than transmissionD Information influences ways of life and thinking4.From the last paragraph we can infer that the writer is________.A indifferent to the harmful influence of the mass mediaB happy about the drastic changes in the mass mediaC pessimistic about the future of the mass mediaD concerned about the wrong use of the mass mediaPassage 2I am one of the many city people who are always saying that given the choice we would prefer to live in the country away from the dirt and noise of a large city. I have managed to convince myself that it weren’t for my job I would immediately head out for the open spaces and go back to nature in some sleepy village buried in the country. But how realistic is the dream?Cities can be frightening places. The majority of the population live in massive tower blocks, noisy, dirty and impersonal. The sense of belonging to a community tends to disappear when you live fifteen floors up. All you can see from your window is sky, or other blocks of flats. Children become aggressive and nervous—cooped up at home all day, with nowhere to play; their mothers feel isolated from the rest of the world. Strangely enough whereas in the past the inhabitants of one street all knew each other, nowadays people on the same floor in tower blocks don’t even say hello to each other.Country life, on the other hand, differs from this kind of isolated existence in that a sense of community generally binds the inhabitants of small villages together. People have the advantage of knowing that there is always someone to turn to when they need help. But country life has disadvantages too. While it is true that you may be among friends in a village, it is also true that you are cut off from the existing and important events that take place in cities. There’s little possibility of going to a new show or the latest movie. Shopping becomes a major problem, and for anything slightly out of the ordinary you have to go on and expedition to the nearest large town. The city-dweller who leaves for the country is often oppressed by a sense of unbearable stillness and quiet. What, then, is the answer? The country has the advantage of peace and quiet, but suffers from the disadvantage of being cut off; the city breeds a feeling of isolation, and constant noise batters the senses. But one of its main advantages is that you are at the center of things, and that life doesn’t come to an end at half-past nine at night. Some people have found (or rather bought) a compromise between the two; they have expressed their preference for the “quiet life” by leaving the suburbs and moving to villages within commuting distance of large cities. They generally have about as much sensitivity as the plastic flowers they leave behind —they are polluted with strange ideas about change and improvement which they force on to the unwilling original inhabitants of the villages. What then of my dreams of leaning on a cottage gate and murmuring “morning” to the locals as they passby? I’m keen on the idea, but you see there’s my cat, Toby, I’m not at all sure that he would take to all that fresh air and exercise in the long grass, I mean, can you see him mixing with all those hearty males down the farm? No, he would rather have the electric imitation-coal fire any evening.5.We get the impression from the first paragraph that the authorA used to live in the countryB used to work in the cityC works in the cityD lives in the country6. In the author’s opinion, the following may cause city people to be unhappy EXCEPTA a strong sense of fearB lack of communicationC housing conditionsD a sense of isolation7. Do you think the author will move to the country?A Yes, he will do soB No, he will not do soC It is difficult to tellD He is in two mindsPassage 3Ideas about education are changing in the United States. Education today is not just a high school diploma or a college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma.Continuing education gives these adults the opportunity to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones.Scientists, mechanics and barbers can take classes to improve their work skills. If they know more or learn more, they can get a better job or earn more money.Continuing education classes give more adults the chances to learn new skills. There is usually a large variety of classes to choose from: typing, foreign cooking, photography, auto repair, furniture repair, or swimming. These are only some of the classes available. Some adults take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. Other adults take continuing education classes to improve their own lives because they want to feel better about themselves.Almost any community college or public school system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, community buildings or churches. Most classes are in the evening, so working people can attend. The classes are usually small, and they are inexpensive.10. Difference Choices for AdultsPassage 4Human cloning technology could be used to reverse heart attacks. Scientists believe that they may be able to treat heart attack victims by cloning their healthy heart cells and injecting them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged, and other problems may be solved if human cloning and its technology are not forbidden. With cloning, infertile couples could have children. Current treatments for infertility, in terms of percentages, are not very successfully. Couples go through physically and emotionally painful procedures for a small chance of having children. Many couples run out of time and money without successfully having children. Human cloning could make it possible for many more infertile couples to have children than ever before. We should be able to clone the bone marrow for children and adults suffering from leukemia. This is expected to be one of the first benefits to come from cloning technology. We may learn how to switch cells on and off through cloning and thus be able to cure cancer.Cloning technology can be used to test for and perhaps cure gene-related diseases. The above is just a few examples of what human cloning technology can do for mankind. This new technology promises unprecedented advancement in medicine if people will release their fears and let the benefits begin.15.Heart attacks can be treated with human cloning technology by___________.A removing the damaged part of the heartB replacing the old heart with a cloned oneC repairing the heart with cells cloned from healthy onesD giving the patients injections of various medicines16. The word “infertile”(Line 1, Para.2) most probably means“____________”.A unable to give birth to a childB with physical and emotional problemsC short of time and moneyD separated from each other for long17. But touching things can help you to see them better. Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth (光滑) and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass is. When you feel all these about the ball, you really see it. With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the difference between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too.All children soon learn what "Don't touch!" means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we touch things as we might buy: food, clothes. To see something well, we have to touch it.There are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel these things. You are too used to (习惯于) them! Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things to touch. Their signs say, "Do touch!" There are four big reasons for this. One reason might be religion. In many Moslem countries, women must wear veils to hide their faces. The veils must be worn in public. Veils are part of the Moslem religion. The second reason is that different materials are used in different countries. For instance, in France the materials used in clothing may be cotton, silk, wool, or many other man-made materials. Most people in China wear cotton. The ways clothes are made are also very different. This is another reason why people dress differently. Western countries rely on machines to make most of their clothing. Someone living in India can use only hand power to make the clothing he needs.Worldwide differences in customs also lead to differences in clothing. A Mexican farmer wears a straw hat with a brim up. 2013江苏专转本英语真题及答案

江苏省2013年普通高校专转本考试真题Part I Reading Comprehension (共20小题,每小题2分,共40分)Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. When Mrs. Joseph Groeger died recently in Vienna, Austria, people asked the obvious question. “W hy did she live to be 107?” Answers were provided by a survey conducted among 148 Viennese men and women who had reached the age of 100. What was surprising was that the majority had lived most of their lives in cities. Although cities are often regarded as unhealthy places, city living provides benefits that country living may lack. One factor seems to be important to the longevity(长寿) of those interviewed. This factor is exercise. In the cities it is often faster to walk short distances than to wait for a bus. Even taking public transportation often requires some walking. Smaller apartment houses have no elevators, and so people must climb stairs. City people can usually walk to local supermarkets. Since parking spaces are hard to find, there is often no choice but to walk.On the other hand, those who live in the country and suburbs do not have to walk every day. In fact, the opposite is often true. To go to school, work, or almost anywhere else, they must ride in cars.1.The Vienna survey may help to explain __________.A.the complaints of people in apartment housesB.the causes of Mrs. Groeger’s deathC.the longevity of people like Mrs. GroegerD.the image of cities in general2.The second paragraph lists some ___________.A.disadvantage of walkingB.occasions for walking in city lifeC.problems of city livingments made by city people3.To reach the third floor of a building, it would probably be most healthful ___________.A.to take the elevatorB.to walk up the stairsC.to ride in a carD.to find an alternative walking4.People who live in the country usually do more driving than walking because ___________.A.they don’t live near business areasB.they don’t need exerciseC.they don’t like walkingD.they can’t afford to take the bus5.We can draw a conclusion from this passage that _________.A.air pollution is not seriousB.anyone can live to be 107C.country people should move to citiesD.walking is a healthful exercisePassage TwoQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage. The Bedouin people, a tribe living in the deserts of Arabia and Northern African, think most highly of people who show loyalty. To them loyalty does not mean that one is devoted to a country, a place, or a leader. Loyalty means being faithful to one’s family and tribe. The Bedouin people are proud of their ancestors(祖先). They do not admire a hero from an ordinary or poor family as much as one who comes from an honored family. They especially respect those who have inherited(继承) a good family name and then have passed it on to their children.A man’s position among his people depends upon his ancestors, relatives, and fellow tribesmen. If they are honored, he is also honored. If they are disagreed, he, too, is disgraced. Therefore, one carefully guards the honor of his family and his tribe.A man can protect his family’s honors by being brave and generous and by giving protection to those who ask for it. He also guards it by carefully watching the women of his family.A Bedouin woman cannot bring honor to her family, but she can bring disgrace. Even if a woman only looks as if she has done something wrong, she may be killed. The honor of her family depends upon her virtue(美德).6. The best title for this passage can be __________.A. It is implied in the passage that the Bedouin women are __________.A. treated as the equals of menB. respected for what they doC. not interested in positionD. not respected as much as menPassage ThreeQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage.Up until about 100 years ago, newspaper in the United States attracted only the most serious readers. They used no illustrations (插图) and the articles were about politics or business. Two men changed that---Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World and William Randolph Hearst of the New York Journal. Pulitzer bought the New York World in 1883. He changed it from a traditional newspaper into a very exciting one overnight. He added lots of illustrations and he told his reporters to write articles on every crime they could find. And they did. One woman reporter even pretended she was mad and was sent to a hospital. She then wrote many articles about the poor treatment of patients in those hospitals where madmen were kept. In 1895, Hearst came to New York from California. He wanted the Journal to be more exciting than the World. He also wanted it to be cheaper, so he lowered the price by a penny. Hearst attracted attention because his newspaper heading were bigger than any one else’s. He often said, “Big print makes big news.”Pulitzer and Hearst did anything they could to sell newspaper. For example, Hearst sent Frederic Remington, the famous illustrator, to draw pictures of the Spanish-American War. When he got there, he told Hearst that no fighting was going on. Hearst answered, “ You provide the pictures. I’ll provide the war.11. Pulitzer and Hearst used every possible means to win over each otherPassage FourQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage. It is hard to imagine life without Arabic numbers(数字). No other number system ever invented has a simple way to write a number like 1984. In Roman numeral, it comes out like this MCMLXXXIV. Imagine how difficult it would be for a school pupil to remember it!The Arabs, however, call their numbers “Indian numerals”. This is probably because they got the original idea a long time ago from India. There were no printed newspapers or scientific magazine then, so mathematics traveled along the same routes that silk did, as businessmen sold and bought goods. The Arabs took the new numbers and made improvements that quickly led to advances in technology. The achievement of Arabic technology can be seen from a passage in a 10th-century book about an Arabic city:” The neighboring country showed the results of careful work in agriculture, trade, and industry. Rice and many other plants were grown in fields with water supplied by Arab engineers. The city included 900 public baths, stone-covered streets, fountains, and beautiful buildings.” At this time, London was a small town with dirty streets, and Berlin was a farming village. In fact, cities outside the Arab world did not reach the same level of social development until centuries later.16. Perhaps you should try a Segway! The Segway is perfect for short journey. It´s an electric vehicle that consists of a platform between two wheels, with a pole that connects the platform to the handlebars. To ride it,you step up onto the platform, and control the Segway by moving your body. Lean forwards to go faster, and backwards to slow down.On older models, direction is controlled by a twist grip(扭转把手)on the left handlebar. This varies the speeds between the two motors, a decrease in the speed of the left wheel would turn the Segway to the left. With newer models you simply lean to the left or right. Meanwhile, a gyroscope(陀螺仪)detects your movements and prevents the machine from falling over. The Segway has a maximum speed of 19 km per hour and a range of about 38 km. After that, you need to plug it in and recharge the battery.Segways are used for a variety of purposes. People with mobility problems can now enjoy walks in the country with their friends and family. Some golfers use them as an alternative to the golf cart. And dog owners now have an easier way to take the dog to the park. A few police forcesuse Seg-ways,too. Choose one best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet. Most of the guests who come on our trips have never been to Egypt before. We want to make everyone comfortable and at ease, but we do always get the same questions in advance of a trip.So here I will give you some travel tips. What should I wear?If you´ re lucky enough to visit Egypt between November and February, pack a sweater. You’ll need it—the desert gets chilly at night. During the day, the temperature will be agreeable and comfortable. Any other time, pack as if you´re going to Phoenix or Vegas in August. For the ladies, bathing suits are normal if there´ s a pool where you ´ re going, but leave the string bikini at home—it is a Muslim country, after all. Last,if you are planning on visiting any mosques or certain parts of upper Egypt, ladies will need to plan on bringing something that comes at least to the elbow, and no shorts for men or women in those areas. What special things do I need to pack? One of my favorite things in the world to bring to Egypt is an Evian Mister, a sprayer with a fine mist of Evian water. You may be able to find it in your local drug store. Spray a little on your face or head, and your body temperature will feel like it´s dropped 10 or 15 degrees. Other items include your camera, sun block and extra batteries. How do I communicate with home?Internet cafes are plentiful everywhere, especially in Cairo, Luxor, and Alexandria. If you have international calling on your phone, you should be able to use it—AT&T and Sprint both work internationally for sure, but make sure you have the international coverage. A satellite phone is best if you are certain to need coverage in the middle of the country, like while sailing up the Nile, but for most people these days a cell phone is fine. What medical preparation do I need?In a word: none! The one thing you may come down with in Egypt is politely called " Pharoah´s Revenge". The thing that knocks out Pharoah´ s Revenge is a regionally produced medicine, and is available at every drugstore for $1 a box. DON´T drink local water,DO drink bottled water, avoid the skins of fresh vegetables, and you’ll be fine.第29题What clothing is proper for ladies visiting a mosque?A.String bikinis.B.Long-sleeve clothes.C.Bathing suits.D.Shorts.第30题What´ s the use of an Evian Mister?A.To relieve your thirst.B.To prevent sunburns.C.To cool yourself down.D.To drive away insects.第31题What information is provided about distance communication?A.A cell phone is enough for most people.B.AT&T and Sprint offer free service in Egypt.C.A satellite phone doesn´ t work in Mid-Egypt.D.Internet cafes are only available in big cities.第32题What does "Pharoah´ s Revenge" probably refer to in the last paragraph?A.A curse.B.A legend.C.A disease.D.A vegetable.上一题下一题(33~36/共20题)Part ⅢReading ComprehensionDirections:There are some reading passages in this part. Since we all had different tastes,we decided to split up,get what each of us wanted, and meet back on the grass in a few minutes. When my friends Robby headed for a hot dog stand, I decided to keep her company. We watched the seller put together the perfect hot dog, just the way Robby wanted it. The player then taps the squares where the numbers had been,in order from 1 to 9. People can do it. But no human competitor has ever completed the game faster or more accurately than Ayumu the chimp. For almost five years Ayumu remains undefeated.Psychologist Nicholas Humphrey of Darwin College at Cambridge University in England now thinks he knows the secret behind the chimp´ s ability. Humphrey suspects Ayumu´ s brain may have a condition that allows the chimp to see numbers as colors. This would mean that Ayumu may see a color glow after the number disappears. Then, instead of remembering the numbers,he remembers a sequence of colors, each associated with a number. The condition that Humphrey believes Ayumu may have is called synesthesia. Humans with synesthesia may associate numbers and letters with colors. For example,a person may see the number "5"as the color blue. Until now, scientists had assumed only humans could have synesthesia.Humphrey found the inspiration for his idea at a 2011 scientific conference. There, he heard a presentation about Ayumu´ s memory abilities and another talk about synesthesia. He then put the two ideas together. Not everyone is convinced that Humphrey is correct. Primatologist Tetsuro Matsuzawa of the Primate Research Institute at Kyoto University in Japan has spent decades studying the amazing memories of chimpanzees, including Ayumu. He maintains that chimps simply have faster memory recall than people.第37题What is Ayumu famous for?A.His gift in playing computers.B.His talent in calculating numbers.C.His skill in tapping the numbered squares.D.His amazing performance in a memory game.第38题Which of the following is true of Nicholas Humphrey?A.He thinks Ayumu has an amazing memory.B.He believes that Ayumu sees the colors of numbers.C.He was inspired by Primatologist Tetsuro Matsuzawa.D.He delivered a speech on synesthesia at the 2011 conference.第39题Where does Humphrey get the inspiration for his idea?A.From an experiment.B.From a conference.C.From a research on chimpanzees.D.From the color blue.第40题How does Tetsuro Matsuzawa explain Ayumu´ s performance in the game?A.Ayumu uses synesthesia.B.Ayumu is cleverer than most chimps.C.Chimps recall things faster than people.D.Chimps are good at dealing with number.上一题下一题(41~55/共15题)Part IV ClozeDirections:For each blank in the following passage, there are four choices marked [A]、[B]、[C] and [D]. Translate the following paragraph into Chinese: (10 points)得分评卷人Rummaging through the fruit and veg section of my local supermarket, reading the country of origin labels, I am bewildered by the geography of it all. That the fruits of the earth should all be laid out on tidy shelves in this provincial corner of Britain would have been unthinkable a few years ago, yet now it is taken for granted.Once strange and exotic fruits that only the rich could afford, if not now part of everyone’s diet, are certainly part of our everyday shopping experience. So much so that instead of focusing on the novel, I am drawn to the commonplace. Here, among the “humble” vegetables, something strange and disturbing is going on.V. Reading Comprehension (38 points)得分评卷人Passage 1Clearly if we are to participle in the society in which we live we must communicate with other people. However, the mass media are with us for better, for worse, and there is no turning back.1.In the first paragraph the writer emphasizes the _________ of face-to-face contact insocial settings.A natureB limitationC usefulnessD creativity2. Shopping becomes a major problem, andfor anything slightly out of the ordinary you have to go on and expedition to the nearest large town. They generally have about as much sensitivity as the plastic flowers they leave behind—they are polluted with strange ideas about change and improvement which they force on to the unwilling original inhabitants of the villages. What then of my dreams of leaning on a cottage gate and murmuring “morning” to the locals as they pass by? The passage implies that it is easy to buy the following things in the country EXCEPTA daily necessitiesB fresh fruitsC designer clothesD fresh vegetables8. The State Economic and Trade Commission(SETC)survey shows that the annual sales volume of China’s 20 biggest chains leapt last year by 43 percent and the number of their retail stores rose by 46.7 percent, while sales for the whole retail market grew by 10.1 percent. Shanghai Lian Hua Supermarket Company holds the top position with 14.06 billion yuan(US $ 1.7 billion)in sales and 1,225 retail stores. The statistics indicate that the biggest stores are swallowing more market share, leaving little development space for medium and small stores, said analysts(分析家). Analysts also note that almost all the giant chains have their headquarters in East China, but they are likely to explore western regions in the near future. With China’s entrance into the World Trade Organization, its market is attracting overseas retailers too. The country is committed to opening gradually its retail business, and as a result, more chain stores from outside China will have a share of the pie. So he turns on his radio. Then he eats breakfast. As he eats, he reads his e-mail and reviews his to-do list. Then he sits on the sofa and thinks about an article he needs to write... Wait a minute! Radio? Breakfast? Sofa? What kind of workplace is this? Well, actually it is John’s house, and he is atelecommuter—he works at home, communicating with the workplace through the Internet. Like John, millions of people—and their employer—are finding that telecommuting is a great way to work. Telecommuters can follow their own schedules. They work in the comfort of their homes, where they can also look after young children or elderly parents. They save time and money by not traveling to work. Their employers save, too, because they need less office space and furniture. Studies show that telecommuters change jobs less often. This saves employers even more money. Telecommuting helps society, too, by reducing pollution and traffic problems. Jobs that are suited to telecommuting include writing, design work, computer programming and accounting(会计). If a job involves working with information, a telecommuter can probably do it.46.From the passage we know that John does his job______.A.by telephoneB.in his officeC.away from homeD.through the Internet正确答案:D47.Which of the following is mentioned as one of the advantages of telecommuting?A.One can get along well with co-workers.B.One can work on one’s own schedule.C.One can work for several employers.D.One can enjoy a lot of traveling.正确答案:B48.The passage tells us that telecommuters change jobs less often and so______.A.they can get more work experienceB.they will have a longer paid holidayC.their employers can save more moneyD.their employers will give them a higher pay正确答案:C49.The phrase “suited to”(Line 1, Para. 3)means______.A.acceptable forB.difficult forC.fit forD.bad for正确答案:C50.The passage is mainly about______.A.a new way to workB.John’s working dayC.various workplacesD.the Internet正确答案:APeople today are still talking about the generation gap(代沟). Some parents complain that their children do not show them proper respect, while children complain that their parents do not understand them at all. What has gone wrong? Why has the generation gap appeared? One important cause is that young people want to choose their own life style. In more traditional societies, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to many people that their parents like, and often to continue the family occupation. Parents often expect their children to do better than they do, to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the high wishes that parents place on their children are another cause of the generation gap. Finally, the high speed of social changes deepens the gap. In a traditional culture, people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society today the knowledge of lifetime may be out of use overnight.51.According to the passage, children today expect their parents to______.A.give them more independenceB.choose a good job for themC.live together with themD.make more money正确答案:A52.Parents often hope that their children will______.A.make as much money as they doB.be more successful than they areC.choose jobs according to their own willD.avoid doing what their parents can’t do正确答案:B53.The generation gap has become wider than before because of______.A.the increasing dependence of children on parentsB.the influence of traditional culture on childrenC.the rapid changes of modern societyD.the missing of lifelong occupation正确答案:C54.In today’s society, the knowledge of a lifetime______.A.is still very much valuedB.becomes out of date quicklyC.is essential for continuing family occupationD.helps the young generation to find a better job正确答案:B55.A proper title for this passage would be______.A.Parents’ Viewpoints On Generation GapB.Relationship Between Family MembersC.Generation Gap Between the Young and the OldD.Difference Between Traditional Culture and Modern Knowledge正确答案:CThere are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals. Short-range goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possible months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, our long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-range goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase. Long-range goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.56.Our long-term goals mean a lot______.A.if we complete our short-range goalsB.if we cannot reach solid short-term goalsC.if we write down the datesD.if we put forward some plans正确答案:A57.New short-term goals are built upon______.A.two yearsB.long-term goalsC.current activitiesD.the goals that have been completed正确答案:D58.When we complete each step of our goals,______.A.we will win final successB.we are overwhelmedC.we should build up confidence of successD.we should strong desire for setting new goals正确答案:C59.Once our goals are drawn up,______.A.we should stick to them until we complete themB.we may change our goals as we have new ideas and opportunitiesC.we had better wait for the exciting news of successD.we have made great decision正确答案:B60.It is implied but not stated in the passage that______.A.those who have long-term goals will succeedB.writing down the dates may discourage youC.the goal is only a guide for us to reach our destinationD.every should have a goal正确答案:CClozeThere is a Web site called the “World Database of Happiness”. Whatever the limitations of ballet in the Soviet Union, it is no wonder that Russian ballet dancers perform with ease leaps and lifts seldom attempted elsewhere, and that the standard of dancing in a Russian corps de ballet is far above that usually seen in other countries — nine years of ballet discipline is almost unheard of outside Russia. The period devoted to dance classes increases gradually from two or three hours a day to five or six. As in other institutions of higher learning, ballet students receive monthly government stipends in their last four years, varying from 160 to 200 rubles ($16 to $20). Of the thirty pupils to begin ballet each year, fewer than twenty-five usually graduate; the others drop out because of poor health or lack of ability.Upon graduation, the starting salary for members of a corps de ballet is 100 rubles a month, while prima ballerinas receive 6000. Russia’ most famous ballet company, the Bolshoi, has first pick of each graduating class, but few dancers have the good fortune to begin with this company;all graduates, however, are assured of jobs in ballet.Stars such as Ulanova were produced in this fashion, with training started early and security, if not intellectual independence, guaranteed.51. Convenience foods from the supermarket simplify shopping and cooking. Household appliances like the vacuum cleaner and the washing machine have taken the tediousness out of housework. Released from these household chores, many wives have found jobs outside the home. Women are achieving economic independence.Families, too, are simpler today. In American, it is not customary for parents to live with their married children. With our greater mobility, relatives have scattered, the parents retiring to Florida or Arizona and the young people, after they marry, going wherever their jobs or their interests take them.Young adult women have new freedom, too. While attending college, they often live away from home, sometimes far from their parents or their relatives. After college, they move to the city, find a job, and set up a “bachelor” apartment. This is the era of women’s liberation. But all this freedom and affluence(富裕) have had an unforeseen and in some aspects a devastating effect on marriage.55. In the U. But for a small country it has a surprising range of climate.People who have never visited England, or who have visited only one part of it, often make the mistake of thinking that it is a cold and wet country, except for the summer months of June to September. This is probably true of the north of England and the Midlands. In the south, however, the climate is much more pleasant. One result is that when people retire from a job in the north they often prefer to move down to the milder south.Perhaps the wannest part of the country is the southwest, which consists of the countries of Devon and Cornwall. The warm Gulf Stream flows across the North Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico and makes the coastal regions of the southwest quite warm. Palm trees, bamboo and many semi-tropical plants grow well in the southwest of England. Flowers and vegetables ripen as much as a month earlier than those elsewhere. Farmers in the area obtain a higher price for their vegetables and flowers because they are ready earlier. In winter there may be several feet of snow in other parts of England but there will probably be no snow at all in the southwest. This may be one of the reasons why the southwest is one of England's most popular holiday areas.41. The distance from the center of England to south coast is about____.A. one hundred milesB. three hundred milesC.one hundred and fifty milesD. six hundred miles42.England is a country____ .A.with a cold and wet climateB.with a surprising climateC.with a surprising climateD. with a variety of climates43.According to the passage,____.A.flowers and vegetables from Devon are on the market one month earlierB.farmers in the southwest grow as many vegetables and flowers as farmers elsewhereC.people in the southwest have to pay a higher price for vegetables and flowersD.Vegetables in Cornwall ripen as much as a month earlier than flowers44.In the north of England and the Midlands, ____ .A. it is cold and wet all the year roundB. the climate is pleasant as a wholeC. it is warm most of the time in a yearD. only the summer is not cold and not wet45.In winter, people in Devon and Cornwall ___.A. seldom see snowB.never see any snowC. may have several feet of snowD.often see snowTask2George Washington, Patrick Henry, and John Adams were among the fifty-six men who met in Philadelphia in September 1774. They were from the different American colonies, meeting to talk about the way Great Britain had been governing the colonies. At this meeting, called the First Continental Congress, the men agreed that the colonies had not been treated fairly. They sent a polite letter to Great Britain. In the letter, they asked for changes in trade and tax laws. The Continental Congress met again the following year. By this time, there was talk of war between Great Britain and the colonies. British soldiers had fired on the Americans, and the Americans had fired back. Meeting at the Second Continental Congress, the men voted to organize an army and place George Washington its head. They had asked politely for fair treatment and had not received it. Now they were ready to fight. The meetings in Philadelphia went on for some time, the Congress had started as a group of men talking and making suggestions. Now they were fighting a war. The Congress was the only central government in the scattered colonies. There was no other group to direct the colonies. On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress published the Declaration of Independence. It may be said that we think with our muscles in somewhat the same way that we listen to music with our bodies. You surely are not surprised to be told that you usually listen to music not only with your ears but with your whole body. Few people can listen to music that is more or less familiar without moving their body or more specifically, some p^rt of their body. Often when one listens to a symphonic concert on the radio, he is tempted to direct the orchestra even though he knows there is a competent conductor on the job.Strange as this behavior may be, there is a very good reason for it. One cannot derive ail possible enjoyment from music unless he participates, so to speak, in its performance. The listener "feels" himself into the music with more or less noticeable motions of his body.51.Some psychologists maintain that thinking is____ .A.not a mental processB.more of a physical process than a mental actionC.a process that involves our entire bodiesD.a process that involves the muscles as well as the brain52.The process of thinking and that of listening to music are similar in that___ .A.both are mental actsB.muscles participate in both processesC.both process are performed by the entire bodyD.we derive equal enjoyment from them53.Few people are able to listen to familiar music without____A.moving some part of their bodyB.stopping what they are doing to listenC.directing the orchestra playing itD.wishing that they could conduct music properly54.The listener’s way of “feeling”the music is ____A. the unnoticed motion of his musclesB. “participating” in the performanceC. bending an ear to the musicD.being the conductor of the orchestra55.According to the selection, muscle participation in the process of thinking is ____ .A. deliberateB. obviousC. not readily apparentD. very pronouncedTask 4All the useful energy at the surface of the earth comes from the activity of the sun. The sun heats and feeds creatures and mankind. Each year it provides men with two hundred million tons of grain and nearly ten million tons of wood.Coal, oil, natural gas, and all other fuels are stored energy from the sun. Some was collected by this season's plants as carbon compounds. Some was stored by plants and trees ages ago. Even waterpower derives from the sun. Water turned into vapor by the sun falls as rain. It courses down the mountains and is converted to electric power. Light transmits only the energy that comes from the sun's outer layer, and much of this energy that is directed towards the earth never arrives. About ninetenths of it is absorbed by the atmosphere of the earth. In fact, the earth itself gets only one half millionth of the sun's entire output of radiant energy.( )56. Radiant energy is stored as carbon compounds by creatures.( )57. The sun is the source of all the useful energy on the earth surface except atomic power.( )58. The largest part of the light energy directed towards the earth is stored up by the plants.( )59. Of the sun’s total output of radiant energy, the earth receives a very small portion.( )60. If it is done properly, asking for a raise reminds your company of your value and worth as an employee. To succeed, play smart. Timing is the first and foremost important thing to consider. You should understand your company’s system for discussing, evaluating and awarding compensation and then work within it. Annual performance evaluation discussions are a good time. Most importantly, do your homework. Find out the fair market value of your work. If you’re not being paid fairly, that needs to be addressed. Evaluate your job performance and state in writing exactly how you’re benefiting the company. Only discuss work-related issues: your job, the company, etc.Besides money, salary discussions can be about learning important information. During your private chat, you might find out a layoff is coming and the conversation will naturally evolve from “how do I get a raise?” to “what can I do to stay with the company?”If you get the raise, congratulations! Get the decision in writing right away. Bosses can depart unexpectedly. If your boss says no, find out how you can turn that “no”into a “yes.”When people say “no”, it doesn’t mean “no”. It means “not right now.”“No” is not a permanent state.21. I realized this was the step toward bettering my life. It was merely an idea, and when it was time to take action, a community college named Rock Valley College stood out as a great fit for me. The reasonable cost and location of the main campus meant that I could attend classes without seriously affecting my family’s finances. My family noticed a change within weeks; I was happier, more organized, more focused. My workload forced me to manage my time more wisely and work more sufficiently. I felt confident, ready to take on new academic challenges and fill in my knowledge gaps. However, the changes I’ve experienced run deeper than that. There is a renewed sense of curiosity and a desire to learn in our house --- not only for me, but also my children and husband.Within the excellent professors and great classes at the college, it would have been difficult to pass these lessons on to my children. “Education is important”would have been just words, instead of a way of life they now see. The example I set sends a stronger message: Pursue education with passion, and happiness will follow. The college has made it possible for me to reach my potential and set higher goals for my life. Going back to school has enriched my entire outlook on life. Anything is possible with an education; I felt that from my first day at the college and still believe it today. My community college has most certainly changed my life for the better, and I even made a few friends.26. The answer is yes. They are allowed to work for the college they attend or for the business at the school. But the business must directly provide a service to students. They can work at the bookstore for example. But they are not allowed to work for a construction company that is building something on campus. Usually, foreign students can work 20 hours a week when they attend classes. But they can work more hours during school breaks. They can work until they complete their studies. Foreign students normally cannot take a job if the job has no connection to their school. But in some situations, they are allowed to take such a job, for example, when they suddenly lose their financial aids.Q11. What kind of business are foreign students allowed towork for on campus?Q12.How many hours can foreign students usually work per week?Q13.When can foreign students work longer hours according to the passage? If there are any sign of a fire, call the front desk immediately give your name, room number and the brief account of the situation. If your family is with you, decide a meeting place outside the building so that you’ll know everyone is safe. If you are unable to leave your room, make every effort to let people know that you are in your room. If you can’t reach the front desk, call the local fire department and explain clearly where you are so that you may get help as soon as possibleQ14. What should you do if there is a sign of fire in the hotel?Q15. Why is it important to decide a meeting place for your family during the fire?Q16.What should you do if you are unable to leave you room in the fire?Passage threeThe cell phone has created a new way of life. But they may also create an embarrassing or even dangerous situation. For those who do like to talk on the cell phone, it is important to have good cell phone manners. Here are some rules you can follow to become responsible cell phone users. Firstly, remember to check whether your phone is off when you are watching a movie or listening to a speech or a lecture. Secondly, respect the people around you when you make or take calls in public. Crowdedrooms are not places to carry on phone conversations. Thirdly, don’t answer your cell phone while talking with another people unless that phone call is more important than the person you are with. Finally, keep your voice low, you do not have to shout to be heard. If you are not sure whether you are too loud, watch the reaction of people near you.Q17. It can free people form poverty, giving them the power to greatly improve their lives and take a productive place in society. It can also free communities and countries, allowing them to leap forward into periods of wealth and social unity that otherwise would not be possible. For this reason, the international community has committed itself to getting all the world's children into primary school by 2015, a commitment known as Education for All. Can Education for All be achieved by 2015? The answer is definitely"yes" , although it is a difficult task. If we now measure the goal in terms of children successfully completing a minimum of five years of primary school, instead of just enrolling for classes, which used to be the measuring stick for education, the challenge will become even more difficult. Only 32 countries were formerly believed to be at risk of not achieving education for all on the basis of enrollment rates. The number rises to 88 if completion rates are used as the standard. Still, the goal is achievable with the right policies and the right support from the international community. 59 of the 88 countries at risk can reach universal primary completion by 2015 if they bring the efficiency and quality of their education systems into line with standards observed in higher-performing systems. They also need significant increases in external(外部的)financing and technical support. The 29 countries lagging(落后)farthest behind will not reach the goal without unprecedented(空前的)rates of progress. But this is attainable with creative solutions, including the use of information technologies, flexible and targeted foreign aid, and fewer people living in poverty. A key lesson of experience about what makes development effective is that a country's capacity to use aid well depends heavily on its policies, institutions and management. Where a country scores well on these standards, foreign assistance can be highly effective.

The U.S, Russia, Germany and Australia have produced some of the sport’s finest players and have won most of the top competitions and medals. But the results of th is month’s world championships, which are being held in the Australian city of Perth, will not be so easy to predict. Since the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, many new names and nationalities have emerged to take on the world leaders. The 1996 Olympics should have been an opportunity for the U.S to display its great swimming power, but instead it faced some embarrassing defeats. The surprises started on the first day of the competitions, when Fred of Belgium set a world record in the competition for 100-metres breast-stroke(蛙泳). Never before had Belgium produced an Olympic champion swimmer. Two other countries also won swimming gold medals for the first time on the opening day. Ireland’s Michelle Smith delighted her country with the first of her three gold medal s. New Zealand also celebrated with Danyon Loader’s gold in the men’s 200-metres free style. Loader went on to win the 400 meters later in the competition. But late on the second day, the U.S team’s officials and coaches were starting to be surprised. Penny Heyns of South Africa had broken the women’s 100-metre breast-stroke record in the morning competitions before claiming gold in the final.31.It is hard to predict the results of this month’s championships becauseA.players from different countries have emerged as new championsB.many names of the players haven’t been heardC.a few countries have won international swimming competitionsD.the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta was a success32.W hat the U.S had to face at the 1996 Olympics wasA.new swimming powerB.a big successC.several unpleasant failuresD.a great deal of embarrassment33.The player of Belgium broke a world record in 100-metrebreast-stroke whichA.it had won beforeB.it had not gained beforeC.it had won many timesD.the U.S. had never won before34.How many medals have the other countries won on the opening day?A. ThreeB. FourC. FiveD. Six35.It can be inferred from the passage thatA.the U.S. is still the only powerful country in swimmingB.the U.S. has been a great swimming powerC.Ireland once controlled international swimming.D.Belgium had won several world swimming championshipsWe all communicate with one another using both verbal and nonverbal language. Most of the time, however, we are not even aware that we're doing it. We move around in our chairs, gesture with eyebrows or a hand, meet someone else's eyes and look away. These are some of the many small and random things we do. But researchers have discovered in recent years that there is a system to these gestures.Every culture has its own body language, and children understand and learn its meanings, along with words. For example, a Frenchman t alks and moves in French ways, while an Englishman and a male American cross their legs very differently. It is also interesting to note that in talking, Americans are likely to end a sentence with a dropping of the head or hand, as well as with a lowering of the eyelids. T hey finish up a question with a raise of the hand, a lift of the chin, or a widening of the eyes. What's more, there are regional phrases too; an expert can sometimes pick out a native of Wisconsin just by the way a person uses his or her eyebrows during conversations. Everything from your sex, racial background, social class, and communication style all influences your body language.A person who truly knows two languages uses both body languages too.A good example of this is New York's famous mayor, Fiorello LaGuardia, who communicated in English, Italian and Yiddish. When films of his speeches are run without sound, it's not too difficult to tell from his gestures the language being spoken. In fact, one of the reasonsEnglish-dubbed f oreign films often seem flat is that the gestures just don't match the language.Usually, our body language acts to further emphasize our words. What the nonverbal gestures put across very often and very efficiently is the emotional side of the message. This is clear when a person feels liked or disliked, as he or she will often communicate emotion "not in what is said but in the way it is said".Psychologist Albert Mehrabian invented this rule: Total communication = 7 percent verbal + 38 percent oral + 55 percent facial. It shows the importance of body language. But experts in the study of communication through body movement are not yet prepared to spell out an exact dictionary of gestures, as body movements can mean many things. For example, a student in conversation with a professor may hold the older person's eyes a little longer than usual. This gesture can be a sign of respect and love; it can be a small challenge to the professor's authority; or it can be something else entirely.36.O n what occasion can strange things happen when we use bodylanguage? ()A.When it is used among people of the same culture.B.When it is used among people with different cultures.C.When it is used among people with the same social background.D.W hen it is used among native language speakers.37.What does an "A-OK" gesture mean in Japan? ()A.Because the man asks her a rude questionB.Because the man doesn't tell her how to find a taxi.C.Because the man offers to take her to Heathrow Airport.D.Because the man makes a thumbs-up gesture to her, which shethinks a rude one.39.Why is the Colombian made angry by the Frenchman?A.Because the Frenchman drinks his wine.B.Because the Colombian swallows the wine the wrong way.C.Because the Colombian thinks the Frenchman made a meangesture to him.D.Because the Frenchman makes a gesture to horrify the Colombian.40.What gesture almost makes the Syrian get up to hit another person?()A.Holding one's nose between one's finger and thumb.B.Holding out both hands.C.Holding out both hands.D.The finger and thumb ring gesture. With more than 20 million records sold, and several Grammy awards to show for it, Natalie Cole, the daughter of famous singer Nat King Cole, has made a name for herself in music.Along with her great success, however, Natalie Cole has lived in a world of drugs, crime, and failed marriages."I have been to hell and back," she says.In the book Angel on My Shoulder, Cole gives us an honest look at the difficult path she has taken, sharing, as well, her successful recovery. "Where I'm at now helps me to look back on my life and realize that I've really had quite a colorful and rich life," she says. "I really could have turned out to be a different person."As the second daughter of Maria and Nat King Cole, Natalie had as normal a childhood as was possible for a little girl whose father spent much of his time away from home. With hopes of one day becoming a doctor, she left her family in Los Angeles to attend a boarding school on the east coast. But when she was 14, she received some terrible news: her father was dying of lung cancer. Less than two months later, in 1965, NatKing Cole died at the age of 47.During her college years at Amherst, Cole began to experiment with drugs, though they didn't stop her from joining a music group. Without enough money to pay the bills and to support her drug habit, Cole turned to stealing and got into trouble with the law. Eventually, she became so badly affected by the drugs that she decided to quit on the spot. She says it was a miracle—the work of an angel on her shoulder. Her drug habit kicked, Natalie's career really began to take off. Only two years after being arrested and almost dying because of drugs, Cole's first record won two Grammies. In 1976, she married Marvin Yancy, her songwriter and producer. They soon had a son, Robbie, and Cole's life really seemed to be coming together."Marriage to Marvin, and Robbie, was like a breath of pure, fresh air," she says. "I was with a man whom I loved and who loved me... we were just so close."Sadly, the marriage wouldn't last. After four years of being drug-free, Cole was once again using. In 1983, Cole checked herself into a recovery program, and was finally able to mend the wounds from her difficult past. After narrowly escaping death once again, Cole decided to record her father's greatest hits, including the phenomenal s uccess Unforgettable: With Love.Cole, who has fought and won many battles to find personal happiness, says "I'm so grateful for the way my life has turned out."41.Natalie Cole became famous because .A.more than 20 million of her records had been soldB.she had won several Grammy awardsC.she is the daughter of famous singer Nat King ColeD.A and B42.Which of the following is true about Natalie's childhood?A.She didn't have a normal childhood when she was a little girl.B.It was always possible for a little girl like her to have a normalchildhood.C.She didn't have a normal childhood because her father spent much ofhis time away fromhome.D.She had a normal childhood, though her father spent much of his timeaway from home.43."During her college years at Amherst, Cole began to experiment with drugs, though they didn't stop her from joining a music group."
