Topic 20 Popular Science and Modern Technology Frankfurt, Germany. Next month, who knows? You certainly won’t believe that I c an call you from my laptop, which is what I’m often doing these days using something called Skype. Skype lets me call any phone number anywhere in the world for about 2 cents a minute, a little more to some places, such as the Middle East and Asia. My computer does the dialing, and the processing of incoming and outgoing voices. All you need is a broadband connection. With the basic version of Skype, all anyone needs to make or receive a call is to install the program on his or her computer (and that includes personal digital assistants). All calls from PC to PC are free. You don’t even need a pair of headphones, though headphones can be a good idea if you wish to be discreet. I use my laptop’s built-in microphone. The paid service for calling regular telephones is called SkypeOut. The quality is completely clear, provided that there’s not too much traffic on the Internet. If there’s an echo, hang up and try again, and it usually gets better. There is one warning: on some computers, especially those run ning older versions of Windows, it doesn’t always work, or can sound like a confusing conversation. You can’t hear a thing. Skype was invented chiefly by a Swede named Niklas Zennstrom along with a group of programmers in Estonia. 1. Wich of the following is wrong of the author? A. He has seldom communicated with others before using Skype B. H often makes calls using Skype C. H often has to go from place to place D. H doesn’t know where he will be next month 2. What does ―... a little more to some places, such as the Middle East and Asia‖ mean? A. The price is as cheap as that in other places in the world.

Popular science and modern technology Science and Technology Influence Life As we can see, science and technology have been deeply influencing our life. Take our school for example. Now there are several HD-cameras monitoring the whole campus in case of emergency or school bullying. At meal time, we can watch TV news in the dinning hall, learning the latest international and domestic events. Not only can our teachers use multimedia equipment to make their classes more lively, but also they can mark papers on the computer, which greatly improves the efficiency of paper-scoring. Additionally, we can do many things conveniently, such as paying by Alipay, getting food by card, going to school by shared bike and so on.

People who multitask all the time may be the worst at doing two things at once, a new research suggests. The findings, based on performances and self-evaluation by about 275 college students, indicate that many people multitask not out of a desire to increase productivity, but because they are easily distracted (分心) and can’t focus on one activity. And “those people turn out to be the worst at handling different things,” said David Sanbonmatsu, a psych ologist at the University of Utah. Sanbonmatsu and his colleagues gave the students a set of tests and a sked them to report how often they multitasked, how good they thought they were at it, and how sensation-seeking (寻求刺激) or imperative (冲动) they were. T hey then evaluated the participants’ multitasking ability with a tricky mental task that required the students to do simple mathematical calculations while remembering a set of letters. Not surprisingly, the scientists said, most people thought they were better than average at multitasking, and those who thought they were better at it were more likely to report using a cellphone while driving or viewing multiple kinds of media at once. But those who frequently deal with many things at the same time were found to perform the worst at the actual multitasking test. They also were more likely to admit to sensation-seeking and impulsive behavior, which connects with how easily people get bored and distracted. “People multitask not because it’s going to lead to greater productivity, but because they’re distractible, and they get sucked into things that are not as important.” Sanbonmatsu said. Adam Gazzaley, a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, who was not a member of the research group, s aid one limitation of the study was that it couldn’t find out whether people who start out less focused toward multitasking or whether people’s recognizing and understanding abilities change as a result of multitasking. The findings do suggest, however, why the sensation-seeker who multitask the most may enjoy risky distracted driving. “People who are multitasking are generally less sensitive to risky situations.” said Paul Atchley, another researcher not in the group. “This may partly explain why people go in for these situations even though they’re dangerous.” (Para. 1)People who multitask all the time may be the worst at doing two things at once, a new research suggests. they are easily distracted (分心) and can’t focus on one activity 当一心多用的人同时做两件事 时,表现最不如人意。 (Para. 2)a set of tests; report ...; evaluated; . For those who are tired doing the laundry, Samsung has found an answer: a washing machine that can tell you when your laundry is done via a smartphone app(application). Strange though it may seem —“my wife already does that” was a common response among attendees viewing the device when it was introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week — Samsung is just one of many appliance makers racing to install (安装) a large number of internet-connected features in machines in an effort to make them “smart”. Last year, it was a refrigerator that tweeted. This year, it’s Wi-Fi-enabled laundry machines and fridges that can tell you when your groceries are going bad. The washers and dryers, available starting in the spring, connect to any smartphone through a downloadable application. The phone can then be used as a remote control, so the machines can be turned on and off while their owners is at work or on the bus. Samsung says it’s not just something ne w — the app connection actually has some practical uses. “If you started to dry clothes in the morning and forgot to take them out, you can go to your phone and restart your dryer for the time when you come home, so your clothes are refreshed and ready to go,” said spokesperson Amy Schmid t. The company also says that with electricity rate(电价)varying depending on the time of day, more control over when the machines are used can help save money. Perhaps, but what they will probably really accomplish is what all good technologies do —enable laziness. Rather than getting up to check on whether the laundry is done, users will instead monitor it on their phones while watching TV. (Para. 3——7)go bad; available; downloadable; turn on and off; practical uses; take out; restart; more control; save money (Para.8)laziness; check on; monitor; while watching TV

How do you get the most out of your revision time, and end up with the best grades you can? Or, if you're a different sort of student, how can you get the same grades you're getting now, but spend less time revising? So here are my five evidence-based tips on how to learn: 1. Space your practice Our analysis showed that people who leave longer gaps between practice attempts go on to score higher. In fact, the longer the gaps, the higher the scores. The difference is huge: people who leave more than 24 hours between their first five attempts at the game and their second five attempts score as highly, on average, as people who have practiced 50% more than them. 2. Make sure you fail occasionally A new result from our analysis shows that people who are most inconsistent when they first start have better scores later on. Our theory is that these people are exploring how the game works, rather than trying to get the very highest score they can every time. 3. Practice the thing you'll be tested on The big mistake many students make is not practicing the thing they will be tested on. If your exam involves writing an essay, you need to practice essay-writing. Merely memorizing the material is not enough. 4. Structure information, don't try to remember it Trying to remember something has been shown to have almost no effect on whether you do remember it. The implication for revision is clear: just looking at your notes won't help you learn them. 5. ________________. New research shows that a brief rest after learning something can help you remember it a week later. Other experiments have shown that a full night's sleep helps you learn new skills or retain information. What’s the main idea of the passage? Fill the blank with proper words. (no more than 5 words) 4. What’re your suggestions on effective revision? 5. Translate the underlined sentence in the passage. 1. Tips on how to revise( how to revise effectively) 2. The big mistake many students make is not practicing the thing they will

阅读理解B Passage1(2016广州) Getting electricity has always been a problem for the173people living in Nuevo Saposoa,a small village in Peru,South America. However, things went from bad to worse in March2015after heavy rains damaged the only power cables in the area. The villagers were forced to use oil lamps, which are not only expensive but also dangerous because of the harmful gases they produce. Luckily, researchers at the University of Technology(UT)in Lima,Peru heard about their problem and found a wonderful solution. They made a lamp that can be powered by plants and soil, both of which can be easily found in the Amazonian rainforest where the village lies. The lamp takes energy from a plant growing in a wooden box and uses it to light up an LED light bulb. While that may sound amazing and even impossible, the science behind the idea is quite simple. As plants create their food(using the sun's energy, water and chemicals from the soil),they also produce waste which they return to the soil. Tiny animals in the soil eat this waste and they produce electrons—the building blocks of electrical energy. The UT team put special sticks inside the soil to capture the energy and keep it in the lamp's batteries for later use.The researchers say a single charge can power a50watt LED light for two hours—enough time for local villagers to get their evening work done. The university gave ten Plant Lamps to the villagers of Nuevo Saposoa in October 2015.So far, they have been a huge success!Elmer Ramirez, the UT professor who invented the lamp, believes the Plant Lamp could help improve the lives of many people, especially small rainforest communities,42%of whom have no electricity. 1.What are the problems of oil lamps according to Paragraph1? A.They are difficult to use and create pollution. B.They are expensive to buy and easily damaged. C.They are difficult to repair and produce little light. D.They are expensive to use and can be bad for health. 2.The electricity made by the Plant Lamp comes from________. A.plant food B.plant waste C.the soil's heat D.the sun's energy 3.What is true about the Plant Lamp? A.It can be made by local people. B.It is much easier to use than oil lamps. C.It can produce all the electricity the village needs. D.The things it needs to make electricity are easy to find. 4.The Plant Lamp's inventor believes it could be most helpful for________. A.rainforest communities B.cars C.poor people in cities D.farmers 5.What is the purpose of the passage? A.To report on a new invention. B.To explain a new scientific theory.
