Tintern Abbey

Located in the Wye valley in Monmouthshire, near Bristol.
Introduction of the Abbey

The abbey was founded in the twelfth century for Cistercian monks by the order of the Norman Lord of Chepstow, Walter de Clare. The great abbey church seen today was rebuilt in the late 13th century under patronage of a later Lord of Chepstow, Roger Bigod.

According to the subject matters, Wordsworth’s short poems can be divided into two groups: the poems of nature and the poems about human life. He is a poet of nature and a master hand in searching and revealing the feelings of the common people. ―a worshipper of nature‖

At the time of the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII in 1536, Tintern was the richest abbey in Wales, something reflected in its majestic archways and elegant windows.

The poem opens with the speaker’s declaration that five years have passed since he last visited this location, encountered its tranquil, rustic scenery, and heard the murmuring waters of the river.
