Unit Operations (4/6)
The unit operation concept is this: By studying systematically these operations themselves --operations that clearly cross industry and processes --- the treatment of all processes is unified and simplified.

Unit Operations (1/6)
The variety of processes and industries that call for the service of chemical engineers is enormous. Because of the variety and complexity of modern processes, it is not practicable to cover the entire subject matter of chemical engineering under a single head.

Unit Operations (2/6)
An economical method of organizing much of the subject matter of ChemE is based on two facts: ① Although the number of individual processes is

A qualified chemical engineer
Must develop, design, and engineer both the complete process and the equipment used; choose the proper raw materials; operate the plants efficiently, safely, and economically; and see to it that products meet the requirements set by the customers.

great, each one can be broken down into a series of steps, called operations; each operations in turn appears in process after process. ② The individual operations have common techniques and are based on the same scientific principles.

Physical Quantities
Any physical quantity consists of two parts: a unit and a number.
No physical quantity is defined until both the number and the unit are given.

Unit Operations (5/6)
Unit operations are largely used to conduct the primarily physical steps of preparing the reactants, separating and purifying the products, recycling unconverted reactants, and controlling the energy transfer into or out of the chemical reactor. The strictly chemical aspects of processing are studied in the subject called “Chemical Reaction Engineering”, which treats reaction kinetics and reactors.

What you will learn in this course ?
1. Develop an understanding of the processes of momentum transfer (fluid mechanics), heat transfer, and mass transfer. 2. Be aware of the basic equations of fluid flow, heat transfer, and mass transfer and be able to apply these equations to practical unit operations.

Unit Operations (6/6)
Because the unit operations are a branch of engineering, they are based on both science and experience. Theory and practice must be combined to yield designs for equipment that can be fabricated, assembled, operated, and maintained.

Unit Operations (3/6)
ChemE unit operations consist of five classes:
① Fluid flow processes: fluids transportation, filtration, solids fluidization ② Heat transfer processes: evaporation, condensation ③ Mass transfer processes: gas absorption, distillation, extraction, drying ④ Thermodynamic processes: gas liquefaction (液化), refrigeration (冷却) ⑤ Mechanical processes: solids transportation, crushing (破碎) and pulverization (粉碎)
