Four Great Main Streets in America
BEVERLEY STREET, STAUNTON, Virginia
We’re not the only ones who have fallen in love with the main stretch o f this central Virginia town—the birthplace of president Woodrow Wilson. The National Trust for Historical Preservation has also classed it as one of the greatest streets in the country. It’s easy to see when you take a glance at the grand brick buildings, which show
the brilliance of late 19th century architecture against the backdrop (背景) of the Shenandoah Valley.
MARKET STREET, YORK, Pennsylvania
Full of history, Market Street fell on hard times in the 1970s when many businesses closed down. But since then, the community has banded together to restore almost every Victorian and Classic Revival style building in town. Today, shops keep their doors open late on the first Friday of each month and the whole thing feels like one big block party. Don’t miss Central Market, where food stores have been selling the goods since 1754.
MAIN STREET, PADUCAH, Kentucky
Lined with beautiful Victorian buildings, this Kentucky street is now an artists’ community. Get a lesson in local history by exploring a series of murals down the main street. Ride in a horsedrawn carriage along the street, then grab a cake at Kirchhoffs fifth-generation bakery. And don’t miss the National Quilt Museum, where all your DIY dreams can come true.
BROADW AY A VENUE, RED LODGE, Montana
Sorry, Will Smith, this is the real Wild West. Need proof? Well, the Sundance kid once robbed a bank right here on Broadway and rumor has it that Calamity Jane and Buffalo Bill Cody also spent time here back in pioneer heyday (盛世). You can even sign your name right next to theirs on the guest register at the Pollard Hotel, which dates back to 1893.
21. In which street can visitors enjoy the late 19th architecture?
A. Beverley Stree.
B. Market Street.
C. Main Street.
D. Broadway Avenue.
22. What do we know about Main Street in Kentucky?
A. The buildings are restored in Victorian style.
B. Visitors can get a geography lesson by exploring a series of murals.
C. Ride in a horsedrawn carriage at Kirchhoffs fifth-generation bakery.
D. People can do some DIY in the National Quilt Museum.
23. When exploring the four streets, you can .
A. see the statue of president Woodrow Wilson
B. attend a big block party
C. rob a bank right in the real Wild West
D. sign your name at the Pollard Hotel

A film festival focused on cats is running in Istanbul, raising deep emotions among moviegoers toward cats in different cultures.
The film festival was launched on Jan. 12 at Pera Museum of Istanbul under the theme of “Meow! Did Cat Eat Your Tongue?” and nine movies from France, Germa ny, Austria, Japan, Turkey and the United States that narrate heart-warming stories about cats are being shown.
“Pera Museum’s permanent movie theatre Pera Film, in its first show of the year, pays tribute to a phenomenal creature: cats,” said Fatma Colako glu, the film and video curator of Pera Film.
“We selected cats as our theme because we realized that cats have a different nature in cinema and more and more films across the globe are focusing on them as either main characters or as important supporting characters,” Colakoglu told Xinhua.
She said interest in the event is definitely beyond expectations and is driven by an ever growing sensitivity among residents toward the welfare of street cats.
Some moviegoers waiting at the entrance to the cinema hall for German movie “The Strange Little Cat” spoke of the importance of cats to people living in Istanbul.
“The Istanbulites are always in a loving relationship with street cats, they feed them, shelter and groom them very well,” said Ahmet Gucu, a resident i n central Beyoglu district.
“You may come across cats wandering around streets, in plazas, shopping malls, subway stops or even sleeping in shop windows,” he said. In his view, all doors in Istanbul are wide open to cats and they seem to be the real owners of the metropolis.
“Kedi,” a Turkish film which presents Istanbul from the perspective of a street cat, is among the most popular movies being shown through the festival.
“In Istanbul, cats are the mirror of people, allowing them to reflect on their lives in ways nothing else could,” a movie review writes.
In the view of Colakoglu, residents in Istanbul are eager to learn how other cultures in the world treat cats and how do they relate to them, while the film festival provides a very good opportunity for them.
She referred to “Rent-a-Cat,” a Japanese movie about a lady renting cats to lonely people to help them fill the emptiness inside their hearts.
24. Why did the film festival select cats as their theme?
A. Cats raised deep emotion among moviegoers.
B. Cats narrate heart-warming stories.

D. Cats are main characters in films.
25. What’s the Istanbul’s attitude to cats?
A. They are friendly to cats.
B. They speak of the importance of cats.
C. They seem to be the real owners of cats.
D. They rent cats to lonely people.
26. Which film is shot from the view of a street cat?
A. Meow! Did Cat Eat Your Tongue?
B. The Strange Little Cat

Since the beginning of 2018, the papers of Western industrial countries have been inundated (淹没) with headlines that presaged bad tidings. “Chinese ban on plastic waste imports could see UK pollution rise,” titled the Guardian. “Where to go with Germany’s plastic waste?” asked the German National Radio. “Plastics pile up as China refuses to take the West’s recycling,” reported the New York Times. Caixin Global was the darkest of them all, asking “Will China’s ban on plastic waste imports choke the world?”
Reading those headlines, one could get the impression that the world would soon come to an end. Whose fault was this? China’s! On January 1, the policy that banned 24 kinds of recyclable trash from being imported to China came into effect. The world’s garbage dump had closed its doors.
For years, industrial countries including Japan, Australia, America and many European countries relied on China to solve their waste problem. The EU exported 86 percent of its plastic waste to China. In total, China shouldered 56 percent of the world’s plastic waste.
I remember that during my undergraduate studies in the Swiss town of Fribourg, my roommates and I diligently collected plastic, cardboard and metal trash in separate bags. Once a month, we carried it to our community recycling station. Little did we know that most of our waste first had to be shipped to the other side of the world to
be recycled, using fossil fuels and producing CO2. China bought our waste from us so we would not have to deal with it. Very convenient! For us, it was out of sight, out of mind. For China, it was a lucrative business—It’s do uble win, at least until recently.
However, the fact that China has now put a hold on waste imports means that they are getting a grip on their domestic waste quality, making the disposal and recycling processes more effective.
The industrial nations, on the other hand, now have the opportunity to rethink recycling and face the waste problem instead of exporting it. I hope that China’s ban is a wake-up call for many to see the absurd results of globalization and blind consumerism—unlimited economic growth with limited resources. Perhaps those dark headlines need to become true for us to realize the overall importance of our global waste problem.
28. According to the author, .
A. it is China’s fault to cause pollution all over the world
B. China’s ban o n plastic waste imports makes western countries panic

30. Why does China stop on plastic waste imports?
A. It can cause UK pollution to rise.
B. The world’s garbage dump had closed its doors.
C. The world would soon come to an end.
D. China’s disposal and recyclin g processes are effective
31. What probably will be the best title of this passage?
A. Western papers criticise China
B. China stops recycling the world’s waste
C. Wake up, Western industrial countries
D. China is growing stronger

These days it is hard to walk the streets without running into someone who is anxiously looking at their wrist to see if they are on target to reach the magic 10,000 steps. Is it really a goal worth fighting for, or might there be something better?
For the truth about getting Fit, I went to a factory in Sheffield with Professor Rob Copeland from Sheffield Hallam University. Our aim was to do a small experiment in which we would compare the benefits and ease of doing 10,000 steps against something called, “Active 10”. With Active 10 you don’t need to count steps. You simply aim to do three brisk (轻快的) 10-minute walks a day.
Our small group of volunteers was fitted with activity monitors so we could not only monitor what they did, but also how actively they did it. First, a normal day’s activity was measured. Rob then split them into two groups. On e was asked to hit the 10, 000-step target- around five miles—in a day, while the other group was asked to do three sessions of “Active 10”—which adds up to around 1.5 miles—more like 3,000 steps. When we looked at the volunteers’ results, two out of the t hree asked to do 10,000 steps had managed to hit their target. But they had all struggled. The Active 10 group, on the other hand, had found it relatively easy.
So 10,000 steps was harder to achieve—but which activity was better for health?
Prof Copeland had analysed the data from their tracking monitors and he said the findings were very clear.
The Active 10 group actually did 30 % more moderate (温和的) to active physical activity than the 10,000-step group, even though they moved for less time. So three short brisk walks were easier to fit into the day and better for health.
I thought that was really interesting and I found it very encouraging, because I really don’t like doing 10,000 steps.
To start doing some Active 10s in your day, you can go to the NHS website where you can download a free Public Health England app. It is a good way to see how much brisk walking you’re doing, and how to do more.
32. Why do the author and Professor Rob Copeland went to a factory in Sheffield?
A. To meet someone in Sheffield Hallam University.
B. To do a small experiment comparing two APPs.
C. To reach the magic 10,000 steps target.
D. To make business with the factory.
33. What does the author conclude?
A. To do the magic 10,000 steps is an easy target.
B. The Active 10 group actually did less moderate to active physical activity.
C. Three short brisk walks are easier to fit into the day and better for health.
D. The author will keep three short brisk walks everyday.
34. Which column is this article possibly from?
A. Health.
B. Wealth.
C. Science.
D. Fashion.
35. Why does the author write this article?
A. To encourage people to do a brisk 10-minute walk every day.
B. To encourage people to exercise everyday.
C. To encourage people to walk 10, 000 steps everyday.
A. To advertise for a free Public Health England app.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
选项中有两项为多余选项。
“2018, a new year, a new you,” Many of my friends have made new year’s resolutions to get fit. The idea sounds great, but we all know the dream might not last longer than this winter. Soon they would find it too cold to run outside, be too busy to exercise. 36 You can trick your body into wanting to do it and even enjoy doing it. How? The first rule is you do not talk about it out loud. 37 It is just a daily routine. If working out is your daily routine, it should be something that you enjoy doing every day. Don’t choose any exercise that makes you feel uncomfortable. 38 The reason is simple. If you enjoy the exercise you are doing, your brain will generate positive thoughts, and you will be happy to do it again.
You can also invite the people around you to join in the daily routine. I do stair climbing with my friends. We are on 20th floor. 39 So we turn it into a social activity and gossip all the way up to 20th floor.
The second rule of working out is it is your workout, so take things at your own pace. When I first started doing yoga workouts, I did it only for five minutes. But five minutes for five days is 25 minutes a week. It builds my strength and is easier to do over time. M y point is, it doesn’t matter how slow or how long your workout is.40 The last rule is simple. If this is your first new year’s workout resolution, you have to work out.
A. You need to tell your body it is not a workout.
B. And it is quite a challenge to do it alone every day.
C. When spring comes, it will be “new year, same you.”
D. I am always too busy or lazy to do it on a regular basis.
E. I probably would have given it up if it lasted longer.
F. The most important thing is to get moving at your own pace.
G. If you are not a morning person, don’t get up early to do a morning run.
