Ares
God of war, frenzy, hatred, and bloodshed.
Ares (Mars) was the son of Zeus and Hera. He was often pictured with brazen armor and a spear. He was known for the unpredictable violence of war. His symbol was the spear.
Hera
Queen of the Gods and of the heavens; goddess of women, marriage, and motherhood.
Hera (Juno) was raised by the Titans Oceanus and Tethys. She was the wife and older sister of Zeus. She was the protector of marriage and takes special care of married women. The peacock was sacred to her and she was often depicted with a peacock somewhere near her. Hera was the most beautiful of the immortals. Her symbols were the peacock and the cow.
Hermes
Messenger of the Gods; god of commerce, speed, thieves, and trade.
Hermes (Mercury) was the son of Zeus and Maia. He was Zeus' messenger. He was the fastest of the gods. He wore winged sandals, a winged hat, and carried a magic wand. He was the giver of good luck and he taught mortals all arts, such as how to make roads and markets. His symbols were winged sandals and helmet.
Apollo
The Sun God; god of light, healing, music, poetry, prophecy, archery and truth.
Apollo (Apollo) was the son of Zeus and Leto, and had a twin sister, the huntress Artemis. Apollo was considered to have dominion over disease, beauty, light, healing, colonists, medicine, archery, poetry, prophecy, dance, reason, intellectualism, and shamans, and was the patron defender of herds and flocks. In art, he was often depicted as a handsome young man with golden hair normally carrying a bow. Apollo's symbol was the golden lyre which was an old musical instrument.
The classical scheme of the Twelve Olympians (the Canonical Twelve of art and poetry) comprises the following gods: Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Ares, Hermes, Hephaestus, Aphrodite, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hestia. The respective Roman scheme comprises the following gods: Jupiter, Juno, Neptune, Ceres, Mars, Mercury, Vulcan, Venus, Minerva, Apollo, Diana and Vesta.
Zeus
King of the Gods and ruler of Mount Olympus; god of the sky, thunder, and justice.
Zeus (Jupiter) was the child of Cronus and Rhea, and the youngest of his siblings. He overthrew his Father Cronus to become the supreme ruler of the gods. He was lord of the sky, the rain god and the cloud gatherer. He was married to Hera, the queen of the gods. His symbols were the thunderbolt, eagle, bull and the oak.
Demeter
Goddess of fertility, agriculture, nature, and the seasons.
Demeter (Ceres) was the sister of Zeus and the mother of Persephone. She was a fair haired earth goddess who blessed all phases of the harvest. She was invoked as the "bringer of seasons" in the Homeric hymn, a subtle sign that she was worshipped long before she was made one of the Olympians.
Athena
Goddess of wisdom, crafts, and strategic battle.
Athena (Minerva) was the daughter of Zeus. She was Zeus's favorite child and was allowed to use his weapons including his thunderbolt. Unlike Ares who was just the violence of war, Athena was also the strategies and intelligence of war. She was fierce and brave in battle but, only fought to protect the state and home from outside enemies. Athena's symbol was the owl.
Poseidon
Lord of the Sea; god of the seas, earthquakes, created horses.
Poseidon (Neptune) was the son of Cronus and Rhea, and the brother of Zeus and Hades. He was given a trident during the war of the Titans and the gods. When they overthrew the Titans, Poseidon took over the sea among other things. Poseidons' symbols were the dolphin and the trident.
Hestia
Goddess of the hearth and home (left so Dionysus could be in the twelve).
Hestia (Vesta) was the first born child of Rhea and Cronus. She was the sister to Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. She was once a member of the Twelve Olympians, but she gave up her place later on for the god Dionysus. The sacred flame and the circle were both symbols for Hestia.
Hephaestus
Blacksmith to the Gods; god of fire and the forges.
Hephaestus (Vulcan) was the son of Zeus and Hera. He was the only god to be physically ugly. He was also lame. He was the smith and armorer of the gods. He used a volcano as his forge. He was the patron god of both smiths and weavers. He was kind and peace loving. His symbol were fire and a blacksmith's hammer.
The Twelve Olympians
The Twelve Olympians, also known as the Dodekatheon in Greek mythology, were the principal gods of the Greek pantheon, residing atop Mount Olympus.
Artemis
Goddess of the hunt, of maidens, and the moon.
Artemis (Diana) was the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the twin sister of Apollo. She was the huntsman of the gods. Artemis was often depicted carrying a bow and arrows and the deer was sacred to her. Sometimes she was alsoar her. The moon was the symbol of Artemis.
Aphrodite
Goddess of love, beauty, desire, and fertility.
Aphrodite (Venus) was the daughter of Ouranos and Hemera and accordingly married Adonis. She was often shown as a beautiful women appearing nude. She was often accompanied by the winged godling, Eros which meant love. The myrtle, dove, sparrow, and swan were sacred to her. The swan and the rose were both symbols for Aphrodite.
