here.
We 'e got a couple introductions I want to make. First of all,
you 'e got the outsta nding gover nor of Penn sylva nia, Ed Ren dell,
in the house. (Applause.) The mayor of PhiladeIphia, Michael
Nutter, is here. (App lause.) Con gressma n Chaka Fattah is here.
(App lause.) Con gresswoma n Allys on Schwartz is here.
(App lause.) Your own princip al, Marge Neff, is here. (App lause.)
The school superintendent, Arle ne Ackerma n, is here and doing a
great job. (Applause.) And the Secretary of Education, Arne
Duncan, is here. (App lause.)
And I am here. (App lause.) And I am thrilled to be here. I am
just so excited. I've heard such great thi ngs about what all of you
are doing, both the stude nts and the teachers and the staff here.
Today is about welcomi ng all of you, and all of America ' stude nts, back to school, eve n though I know you 'e bee n in school for a little

by a National Blue Ribbon -- as a National Blue Ribbon School
because of your record of achieveme nt. And that is a testame nt to
everybody here - to the stude nts, to the paren ts, to the teachers, to the school leaders. It s an example of excellenee that I hope com mun ities across America can embrace.
Over the p ast few weeks, Michelle and I have bee n gett ing Sasha
and Malia ready for school. And they ‘re excited about it. I ‘11 bet they had the same feeli ngs that you do -- you re a little sad to see the summer go, but you 're also excited about the po ssibilities of a new year. The
possibilities of building new friendships and stre ngthe ning old on es, of joi ning a school club, or tryi ng out for a team. The possibilities of growing into a better student and a better person and making not just your family proud but making
yourself proud.
But I know some of you may also be a little n ervous about starti ng a
new school year. Maybe you ‘re making the jump from elementary to middle school, or from middle school to high school, and you worried about what that s going to be like. Maybe you ‘re starting a new school. You ‘re not sure how you ‘lllike
re it, trying to figure out how you 're going to fit in. Or maybe you ‘re a senior, and you ‘re an xious about the whole college p rocess; about where to apply and whether you can afford to go to college.
And bey ond all those concern s, I know a lot of you are also feeli ng
