My view on happiness

What is happiness? It is a common asked question, which is not easy to respond to. However, it is easier to answer what happiness means to ourselves, because we all have our own definition of happiness.

Some people said that the definition of happiness depends on what kind of life we are living and what kind of life we want to live. To a beggar, the definition of happiness may be sufficient food and clothes; to a scholar interested in literature, a book and a cup of coffee are the origin of happiness; to me, a university student, happiness is living a meaningful and rewarding campus life. Although these things which make people feel happy may sound easy and simple to others, but these things are real and achievable. The definition of happiness varies from different occupations, different regions, different religions, different ages, and more importantly, it varies for different people.

However, some people argue that happiness has anything to do with external environment, such like food, money, clothes, it is up to our minds. No matter we are poor or wealthy, as long as we have positive thinking and love our lives, we can feel happy. I can’t agree more on the argument that happiness is a the state of people’s minds and only can be done by ourselves.

There are thousands of ways to classify happiness according to thousands of standards. Because whether we are happy or not depends on how we think about things in life and different types of happiness come from different thinking. Therefore, some people think happiness can be classified by its origin. Meanwhile, as far as I am concerned, happiness can be divided into different levels according to how delight we are and how long can this feeling last. The lowest level of happiness is pleasure, and it occurs when we are happy with our current lives. This kind of happiness cannot last so long as it is easy to be affected and changed by other things. The highest level of happiness is self-achievement, which happens when we achieve our goals through our individual efforts. This kind of happiness, on the contrary, is lasting. Because we can learn a lot from the process and the things we learn are buried deeply in our hearts and would influence us from now on. However, as it is the peak of happiness, we may go through trials and failures before we get our success and feel happy.

Therefore, the way to achieve happiness is simple and straightforward: first, knowing where you are and where you want to go. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that the biggest enemy of the human being is himself. Only when you can figure out you want, can you try to make it and achieve happiness. Secondly, insist on what you think is meaningful and never give up. Sometimes, happiness just comes after sorrows, so do not turn back until you achieve happiness. Happiness is everwhere in life as long as you love life.

Unit9Whatishappiness课文翻译综合教程二

Unit 9 What Is Happiness? John Ciardi (abridged) The right to pursue happiness is issued to Americans with their birth certificates, but no one seems quite sure which way it runs. It may be we are issued a hunting license but offered no game. Jonathan Swift seemed to think so when he attacked the idea of happiness as “the possession of being well-deceived,” the felicity of being “a fool among knaves.” For Swift saw society as Vanity Fair, the land of false goals. It is, of course, un-American to think in terms of fools and knaves. We do, however, seem to be dedicated to the idea of buying our way to happiness. We shall all have made it to Heaven when we possess enough. And at the same time the forces of American commercialism are hugely dedicated to making us deliberately unhappy. Advertising is one of our major industries, and advertising exists not to satisfy desires but to create them —and to create them faster than any man’s budget can satisfy them. For that matter, our whole economy is base d on a dedicated insatiability. We are taught that to possess is to be happy, and then we are made to want. We are even told it is our duty to want. It was only a few years ago, to cite a single example, that car dealers across the country were flying banners that read "You Auto Buy Now." They were calling upon Americans, as an act approaching patriotism, to buy at once, with money they did not have, automobiles they did not really need, and which they would be required to grow tired of by the time the next year’s models were released. Or look at any of the women’s magazines. There, as Bernard DeVoto once pointed out, advertising begins as poetry in the front pages and ends as pharmacopoeia and therapy in the back pages. The poetry of the front matter is the dream of perfect beauty. This is the baby skin that must be hers. These, the flawless teeth. This, the perfumed breath she must exhale. This, the sixteen-year-old figure she must display at forty, at fifty, at sixty, and forever. Once past the vaguely uplifting fiction and feature articles, the reader finds the other face of the dream in the back matter. This is the harness into which Mother must strap herself in order to display that perfect figure. These, the chin straps she must sleep in. This is the salve that restores all, this is her laxative, these are the tablets that melt away fat, these are the hormones of perpetual youth, these are the stockings that hide varicose veins.

Happiness First, Money Later翻译

Happiness First, Money Later We live in a success and money driven culture. If you doubt the truthfulness of that cliché, I’ll refer you to competitive reality TV, your office, the lottery, and just about any marketing or money-based blog on the web. F rom the first day that we understand its power, we’re made to believe that money is the end-all of human happiness and achievement. Unfortunately for young professionals with big career ambitions, the mantra of “more money means the good life” leads to more sorrow than it does to happiness. No Regrets The sad truth is that young professionals who aspire to monetary success (and who doesn’t?) often make comprises in all other aspects of their life in order to make the big bucks. Our society almost encourages the sacrifice of personal happiness for the sake of material success. But what is success if it can’t be shared or appreciated among loved ones? What is a life’s worth of work if you don’t take a moment to stop and enjoy it? The Guardian recently published a compelling piece about the five biggest regrets of people about to meet their maker. The author explains that most people regret that they didn’t lead the life they wanted to lead, or they regret that they worked too hard in life at the expense of those they loved. It’s a revealing story that drives home the need for many

It's not unique, but has its counterpart that poor men to whose name not having a thing always feel happy. Why are they so different? The answer is that the rich is being thinking how he can gain more while the poor is satisfied with what he owns at hand-health, freedom, love and so on. Furthermore, love makes great difference to happiness. If you have love in your heart, you will have happiness in your life. Love consists of two parts, one is to love others, and the other is to be loved by others. Lei Feng set a good example for all of us. He served the people wholeheartedly until the last minute of his life. He regarded serving the people as the happiest thing. There are numbers of similar inspirational stories to be found. In addition, being loved by others can also lead you t o happiness. Courage from your parents when frustrated, care from your lover when ill, help from your friends when in trouble… all of these will make you the happiest person in the world. The last but not least is to act happily. Putting on a happy face and thinking interesting things are helpful to trigger happy feelings. Wile happiness is precious, it is easy to get. For example, some students believe that if they have much money or a large number of possessions, they will be happy. They believe that they will be able to do anything they want to if they have money. Some students think that they should be in good health, and enjoy whatever they like. Many students wish to have much wealth from their parents. In this way they don’t have to work hard, and they can have everything. I don’t agree with the above points. We can’t buy many important things with money, such as health, happiness and knowledge. I value knowledge, which makes me happy, for I can do much for mankind with knowledge. Although different people value happiness differently, my “wealth” of happiness is in my study Freedom in my Dream As the whole world has its boundaries, limits and freedom coexist in our life. I don’t expect complete freedom, which is impossible. I simply have a dream that supports my life. I dream that one day, I could escape from the deep sea of thick schoolbooks and lead my own life. on happiness 高级英语写作练习 关于幸福

On happiness Everyone have their own way to pursue the happiness they think, but also have a lot of people who have no idea of happiness while working busily everyday. “What is happiness?”.Everybody has his own different opinions for this question. Some people believed that happiness accompanied with the satisfaction in the well relationship just like Victor Hugo, the French novelist, said:“The supreme happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved”. There is only the pain which we can feel if we accompany day and night with the person we dislike. But Thomas Edison also said that achievement provides the only real pleasure in life. Well-being comes from intense self-identification and realizing one’s self-value in his view. Different from them,Abraham Lincoln have suggested that the most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.Based on this statement,we might conclude that the happiness is only a feeling which depend more on what you think than what the reality is. This just right consistent with the old Taoist wisdom that happiness consists in contentment to a certain extent. Although the adults have made a lot of discussion in this question, happiness for most of children sames just as simple as joy which is easy to obtain.
