4 – Review Gain characteristics of original counterbalance valve • If lowest gain/fully restrictive CB valve does not stop the “bouncing”, the next choice would be a Load Reactive MB. • If a low ratio CW has been applied (because of back pressure), possibly a Load Reactive MW could solve the problem. (Both the MB and MW Load Reactive valves offer improved modulation and will add stability.)

2 – “M” Valves can be sized for lower pressure drops with higher flows • When you over size a normal counterbalance your system can become unstable. If you use an “M***”-valve it is much less susceptible to this problem.

Basic Valve Geometry:
• Spring bias forces valve into normally closed position. • Differential Area (A1 – A3) forms relief area. • Pilot ratio determined by (A2 – A1): (A1 – A3).
Example 1: L=2250, Pr=4.5, S=3000,
Cr=2
P=(3000-2250)/(4.5+1/2) P =150 psi
Example 2: L=2250, Pr=1.5, S=3000,
Cr=2
P = (3000-2250)/(1.5+1/2) P = 375 psi
