For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.(A)Many kinds of music can stir the imagination and produce strong feeling. For some people, romantic composers such as Chopin and Tchaikovsky enhance feelings of love and sympathy. Religious and spiritual music 25 help some people feel peace or lessen their pain. But one musician seems to have a unique ability of healing(治愈) the human body – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Scientists have found Mozart’s music to be remarkable in its ability 26 (calm) its listeners. It can also increase their perceptions, and help them express themselves more clearly. Many amazing cases have been documented using Mozart 27 a healing aid. For example, a tiny premature baby 28 (name) Krissy, who weighed just 1.5 pounds at birth, was on total life support. Doctors thought she had little chance of survival. Her mother insisted on playing Mozart for Krissy, and thought 29 saved her daughter’s life. Krissy lived, 30 she was very small for her age and slower than the average child. At the age of four, she showeda n i n t e r e s t i n m u s i c a n d h e r p a r e n t s g a v e h e r v i o l i n l e s s o n s.31 their astonishment, Krissy was able to play musical pieces from memory that were far beyond the ability of an average four-year-old. 32 (play) music helped her improve in all areas of her life.(B)Touch is the first tool we turn to when we face pain. We react similarly to 33 injured toe and a broken heart, tenderly 34 (grasp) the affected area. We are all born with the power to heal ourselves and to heal others because healing energy does not come from within but from outside ourselves. The energy is there for anyone to use, and no formal training 35 (require). When you have the intent to heal, and love is your only motive, you become a channel for healing energy. Through the simple touch of hands, you can use that universal healing energy to comfort those who 36 (experience) pain or distress. In performing healing energy work, it is necessary that you let your intuition (直觉) guide you to the affected area. Just imagine a healing light being drawn in through the top of your head and flowing through your hands. The energy will begin to flow once you have made a physical connection, and your touch will help awaken the body’s ca pacity for self-healing. The affected areas of the body, 37 were previously tense or tight, will relax with enough healing energy.38 (try) not to feel like you aren’t helping if you don’t feel the flow. The work you are doing is indeed helping.Understanding 39 energy works is less important than consciously making use of it. Performing a loving healing treatment on your loved ones can be a wonderful experience that brings you closer together. And as the healing energy passes through you, it can awaken a feeling within you that helps you 40 (well) understand the interactions between the spiritual, physical and mental selves.Section BDirections:Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.Genes are found in every plant or animal cell. They are the basic units of life that are capableof passing specific 41 from one generation to another. For example, whether you are tall or short depends upon the genes that you 42 from your parents. Cloning plants or animals is a process that 43 the production of a new organism that is genetically identical to the organism from which cells were taken. Although this 44 has aroused great interest around the world over the last ten years or so, cloning is not something new in nature. Most mothers give birth to just one child at a time; however, on rare 45 a mother may give birth to a set of twins. If these two children are identical twins, then they are in fact naturally 46 clones of each other, although not of the parents. The reason for them being clones is that the two children originated from one 47 egg and consequently they are genetically identical. Twins thatd e v e l o p f r o m t w o48 eggs are not clones of each other.Cloning also occurs naturally in plants. Strawberry plants reproduce themselves by sending out runners, or modified stems, and these runners take root a short distance from the 49 plant and start to grow, and to produce fruit. In time, this plant sends out runners of its own that also take root. This is known as asexual reproduction; in other words, reproduction that does noti n v o l v e t h e f u s i o n(融合)o f m a l e a n d f e m a l e c e l l s.T h e n e w l y50 plants are clones of the original. In addition to strawberry plants, certain types of flowers and grasses reproduce themselves in the same way. Throughout history, people have also facilitated cloning by taking small cuttings from plants and then growing them into new plants. This form of cloning is called vegetative propagation.III. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)I used to think of myself as a fairly cosmopolitan(全球的)sort of person, but my bookshelves told a different story as my literature collection mainly consisted of British and American titles. Worse still, I hardly ever read anything in translation. My reading was limited to stories by English-speaking authors. So, at the start of 2012, I set myself the challenge of trying to read a book from every country in a year to find out what I was missing. With no idea how to go about this, thinking that I was unlikely to find books from nearly 200 nations from my local bookshop, I decided to ask the planet’s readers for help. I created a blog called A Year of Reading the World, appealing for suggestions of titles that I could read in English. The response was amazing. Before I knew it, people all over the world were getting in touch with ideas and offers of help. Some posted me books from their home countries. Others did hours of research on my behalf. In addition, several writers sent me unpublished translations of their novels, giving me a rare opportunity to read works otherwise unavailable to the 62% of British people who only speak English. Even with such support, however, sourcing books was no easy task.Tracking down stories in some unfamiliar places even took as much time as the reading andblogging. It was hard to fit it all in around work and many were the nights when I sat bleary-eyed (睡眼惺忪的) into the small hours to make sure I stuck to my target of reading one book every 1.87 days.Still, one by one, the country names on the list made at the start of the year transformed into vital, exciting places filled with laughter, love, anger, hope and fear. Lands that had once seemed exotic became familiar to me – places I could identify with. At its best, I learned, fiction makes the world real.66.What help did the writer receive to achieve his goal?A.Some writers sent him their original works.B.The local bookstore provided books from 200 nations even if it was unlikely.C.Some writers did research work on what books are popular.D.Some people mailed books from their own countries.67.In order to accomplish his goal, the writer did the following except ______.A.asking for help from all over the worldB.making full use of his leisure time after workC.reading until early next morningD.appealing to writers to send him new books68.What does the word "exotic" in the last paragraph most probably mean?A.Unrealistic.B. Visitors can buy reduced tickets as long as they make a reservation.(C)Have you ever seen harmful robots refuse to die,no matter how fiercely people fight back? As is known,it is always the case in some of the scariest sciencefiction. Now, science fiction has changed into sciencefact. For the first time, researchers have created arobotic machine that can stand a beating and keep onwalking. Developed by scientists from CornellUniversity and the University of Vermont, the newrobot looks like a spider with four legs. Until now, even the most advanced robot was almost certain to break down when damaged. That’sbecause its inside computer simply doesn’t know how to operate the machine after its sh ape has changed. To get around this problem, the spidery robot’s developers equipped their invention with eight motors and two sensors that read how the machine is tilting(倾斜). The motors and sensors all provide electrical signals to the machine’s softwa re.Using this information, the system follows a new procedure to figure out the machine’s shape at any given moment. The program chooses from among 100,000 possible arrangements of parts. From there, the computer considers a wide variety of possible next steps, and it calculates how best to move the robot forward the longest possible distance, before trying to move again. “The new strategy is a major advance in robotics”, Professor Skehan, a scientist in Cornell University says, “and it’s far from scary”. The technology may someday help researchers create better artificial arms and legs that give new freedom to people who lack them. The new knowledge might also help scientists understand how people and animals figure out their own sense of place in space.“Designing robots that can adapt to changing environments and can compensate (补偿) for damage has been a difficult problem,” says neuroscientist Olaf Sporns of Indiana University in Bloomington. “This work provides a new way toward solving this important problem.”74. What’s the most important characteristic of the new robot?A. Its shape is like a spider with four legs.B. It can repair itself and move again after damaged.C. It is operated by its inside computer.D. It is certain to change the direction when damaged.75. it can be learnt from the passage that ________.A. animals have no sense of place in spaceB. people have difficulty in figuring out how to get to his destinationC. scientists don ’t understand people ’s ability of locationD. scientists want to know where people and animals are going76. We can infer from the view of Professor Skehan that ________.A. the new technology will help people have a better sense of spaceB. the new technology will help people grow new arms and legsC. designing robots can help to be adaptable to the changing of the environmentD. the new technology will have some medical benefits77. The purpose of the author to write this article is to ________.A. introduce a new robot that will not dieB. discuss science fiction and new inventionC. recommend the latest inventionD. explain the relationship between robot and medicineSection CDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.With 26 British prime ministers, 58 Nobel prize winners, over 150 Olympic medals and a "notable alumni" list that reads like a historical hall of fame, the institutions of Oxford and Cambridge – collectively known as Oxbridge – are seen, by many, as the dream alma mater(母校).However, as admission season dawns, and the October 15 deadline for Oxbridge inches ever closer, many students may wonder what makes the UK's top two institutions so special. Why does Oxbridge symbolize the academic dream for so many? Do the universities deserve the reputation they hold in the minds of so many teenagers, parents and academics? There is no doubt that both Oxford and Cambridge have a long standing history of academia. Yet, what is often overlooked is the strong reputation of countless other universities in the UK.A simple click on Google can tell students that the London School of Economics and Political Sciences, for example, has over 18 Nobel Prize winners and 50 world leaders. University College London attracts students from 150 countries and has exchange and research links with nearly 300 overseas universities. Manchester University has the largest student union of all UK universities and boasts alumni such as Niels Bohr and James Chadwick.I suddenly realized the Oxbridge effect when I was out in London with friends. I met some new people and was surprised by their reaction when I told them I was going to study at Cambridge. One person even got down on one knee and kissed my hand. From then on, I told people I was going on a gap year. Although I knew that Oxbridge provides a good education, I had never expected to get such extreme reactions. It was this that made me start to feel uncomfortable about the way that Oxbridge is viewed. The Cambridge Tab, the university's student newspaper, has argued that what makes Cambridge special is the fact that the students are told that they are unique and a cut above the rest, so they believe it. Ron Weasley never took the Felix Felicis potion that Harry Potter pretended to give him – all he had to do to win the Quidditch match was to believe he was great. For students applying now, yes, you will receive a world class education at Oxbridge, but you will find the same at numerous other universities throughout the country. Every time you hear about the brilliance of Oxbridge, consider that just because many believe, it does not have to be78. The examples of the London School of Economics and Political Sciences, University College London and Manchester University serve to illustrate the point that __________________________________in the UK.79. According to the passage, we can find that people ___________________ the students at the Oxbridge.80. How did the writer avoid over-reaction from people to her admission into Cambridge?______________________________________________________________________81. Well, actually I’m expecting an important call from the office any minute but go ahead.W: I’m sorry, but it’s really important. It’s about the car. It was broken into last night…M: Oh, no!W: I want to know if you saw or heard anything.M: Did I see anything? Where?W: In the road. Did you see anybody looking suspicious?M: No, I don’t think I looked out of the window.W: Can you remember if you heard anything? They can’t have done it completely silently. I came back late from a party and I parked it at about 11:30, and then I had a shower and went to bed.M: No, I’m sorry. What have they taken?W: Well, this morni ng I found the driver’s window smashed. There’s glass everywhere, and the CD player has gone.M: How annoying! Is anything else missing?W: Well, it could have been worse. Luckily, there wasn’t much in the car anyway.10. M: In today’s lecture we’ll begin with Doxey’s model for the socio-cultural impact of tourism. He identifies four stages. He identifies the first stage as happiness. Because initially the tourists are regarded as a new and interesting thing. As tourist development begins to increase, some sections of the local population become involved with tourists while others don’t, and it is increasingly the case that commercial rather than social factors are influencing relationships between tourists and the host community. People are less interested in the tourists for their own sake. This is identified as the second stage by Doxey. If development continues to increase, the hosts get annoyed with the tourists, and this is the third stage.Well, development of the tourist area may start to get out of control, which is going to make life difficult for local people. So the policy makers, the government, the local authorities, and so on, provide more roads, more car parks and so on to try to help cope with the coming of tourists. But the lives of the local people are made increasingly difficult and in the final stage of the model, the hosts show unkindness to the tourists.。

三省三校2014年高三第二次联合模拟考试英语试题第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分AI’ve often wondered if I might do more good as a travel agent rather than as a psychologist. It seems that I have been more dramatically affected by certain kinds of travel experiences than I ever have.My trip to Iceland is a fine example of that. The plan was to spend two days in a remote mountain hut in Iceland. I was working on a photographic book about winter in Iceland and needed to capture images of this amazing region of high mountain peaks, smoky volcanoes, and lakes with floating icebergs. The moment after we arrived, the weather turned extreme making visibility impossible. It snowed so much and the wind blew so hard that we couldn’t leave the tiny hut. To stay warm, we walked ar ound in circles much of the day inside the tiny hut. We tried to call for help but the radio did not work. Day after day, we watched our supplies of food and fuel grow dangerously short. We got acute cabin fever (幽居病 and started going for walks and ski expeditions outside. Even when the weather finally broke, nobody came to get us even though it was three days beyond our scheduled pickup. By the time the rescue team came to pull us out, we had all given up hope. From then on, the world looks different to me, as does my life. It would have taken me years of psychotherapy to get to the same point.Almost everyone has a story to tell, and interestingly, most of these experiences were not altogether pleasant at the time. In fact, it appears that the most constructive life-changing journeys were those that involved some sorts of awful and uncomfortable events that forced the person to develop new resources, increase confidence, and solve problems in new ways.21. The writer went to Iceland to ______.A. enjoy the natural beautiful floating icebergsB. take photos about the region for a bookC. collect materials for psychological researchD. challenge the high mountains there22. During the trip in Iceland, those travelers faced difficulties EXCEPT that ______.A. they got lost in the mountainB. they were short of food and fuelC. they couldn’t see the surroundings clearlyD. they failed to get in touch with the rescue team23. From Paragraph 3, we learn that the travelers ______.A. were in despair before they were rescuedB. stayed in the hut for three days altogetherC. got sick because of going for ski outsideD. got rescued immediately the weather turned fine24. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. The writer is a travel agent who loves difficult challenges.B. In Iceland the weather is always extreme and it snows a lot.C. The travellers were so depressed that they needed psychotherapy.D. Awful journeys may become life-changing events that inspire people. One of India’s top engi neering schools has restricted Internet access in its boarding houses, saying addiction to surfing, gaming and blogging was affecting students’ performance, making them lonely an d even suicidal.Authorities at the best Indian Institute of Technology (IIT in Mumbai said students had stopped socializing and many were late for morning classes or slept through them. “Now, a student doesn’t even know who lives two doors away from him because he is so busy on the Internet,” said Prakash Gopalan, dean of Student Affairs. “The old dormitory culture of companionship and socializing among students is gone. This is not healthy in our opinion.”IIT-Mumbai, with about 5,000 students, is one of the seven IITs across India which are considered to be among the finest engineering schools in the world. They are also a talent pool for global technology giants. But their hard courses, tough competition and lonely campus lifestyle have taken an effect on students. Depressive and dysfunctional lifestyles are known to be common among IIT students, and at least nine have committed suicide in the past five years. Students have unlimited free Internet access in their boarding houses to help them in their studies, but many also use it to surf, chat, download movies and music, blog and for gaming.“Starting Monday, Internet access will be banned between 11 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. at IITMumbai’s 13 boarding buildings to encourage students to sleep early and to try and force them out of their shells.” Gopalan said. But the move has not gone d own well with students who say they hate their lives being regulated. “Now they will say we need to listen to a lullaby (摇篮曲to go to sleep.” said Rajiv, an electronics student.25. According to the text, the students addicted to the Internet in IIT-Mumbai are likely to ______.A. perform well in studiesB. participate in social activitiesC. know their classmates betterD. feel lonely and even suicidal26. T he underlined word “dysfunctional” in Paragraph 3 most probably means “______”.A. unpopularB. meaningfulC. abnormalD. exciting27. What measures have been taken in IIT-Mumbai?A. Students must go to bed before 11 p.m.B. Students are forbidden to surf the Internet on campus.C. Students have unlimited free Internet access in their dormitories.D. Internet access is unavailable in deep night in boarding buildings.28. We may infer from the last paragraph that ______.A. all electronics students hate the banning orderB. some students complain about the banning orderC. there is no Internet access on the IIT campus ever sinceD. more students prefer listening to music to surfing the InternetWell, parents, surprise! Lots of us are using Twitter and Facebook to thumb rides, and n ot just to school. It’s awkward to be refused when you call a friend and as k for a ride. But with Twitter, you just look for other people heading the same way.It may sound risky, so many teens stay within their own social circles to find rides, and d on’t branch out beyond friends when asking on Twitter just like me, but to some young people, especially those taking longer trips, stranger danger is less of a concern.“I think the digital connection of young people is really key, because younger generat ions grew up sharing things on line, sharing files, photos, music, etc, so the y’ve been very used to sharing,” said Juliet Schor, a sociology professor at Boston College. The sharing economy got big during the recession (经济衰退, allowing people to access more goods, services using technology and even to share costs. And that technology, for me, is what the car was for my mom, a gateway to more freedom, like what my friend Earl says, “The symbol of freedom isn’t the car any more because there’s technolog y out there connecting you to a car.”According to the researchers at the University of Michigan, 30 years ago, eight in ten American 18-year-olds had a driver’s license compared to six in ten today. So it’s not that surprising that on my 16th birthday I wasn’t rushing to get a license but an iPhone.“Driving, for young people, does mean they have to disconnect from their technology, and that’s a negative. So if they could sit in the passage side and still be connected, that’s going to be a plus.” Schor continued. To me, another plus is that ridesharing represents something, something much bigger than trying to save money. I see it as evidence that people still depend on each other. My generation shares their cars and apartments the way neighbors used to sharecups of sugar. For the system to work, some of us still need our own cars. But until I get my own version of the silver Super Beetle, you can find me on Twitter.29. The American teens like me, prefer to possess an iPhone as a birthday gift because _______.A. it is most fashionable and coolB. they are bored with driving carsC. they are fond of being connectedD. it is much cheaper than a car30. We can learn from the text that _______.A. Twitter is a website for teens to make friends and achieve goalsB. ridesharing can be seen as a sign that people still count on each otherC. driving cars for teens means a plus and connecting with technologyD. having a car and cost-sharing symbolize more freedom for the author’s mother31. Professor Juliet would agree that _______.A. young people will sit waiting to be contacted by reading a passageB. sharing economy is bound to be responsible for the recessionC. young people tend to share a car with strangers by means of TwitterD. being connected via technology comes first for young people32. The best title for the passage is probably _______.A. Twitter, an Awesome WebsiteB. Cars or iPhoneC. Teens Use Twitter to Thumb RidesD. Cool Teens on the GoNews that Microsoft made a $44.6 billion bid to buy Yahoo resulted in heated discussions made by many Internet users. Here are some responses:Diane Burke of Weeks bury, KentuckyI think it would definitely be an interesting combination. Everyone recognizes the names Yahoo and Microsoft, but everyone also says, “Did you Google it?” Such a catchphrase (时髦话 is going to be hard to beat.Shaun Carney of Laurelville, OhioI think the merger (合并will provide more competitions for Google. I don’t think the merger will allow Microsoft to develop faster than Google, though. I believe the increased competition this merger brings will force Google to stay on top of its game by offering more fresh and original Internet tools and expanding on the tools it already offers.Toni Suarez of Hacienda Heights, CaliforniaI view the merger as a necessary element in preventing a monopolization (垄断. Perhaps it would bring better high technology innovations to e-mail and help in researching and developing a better Internet!Rick R. of Edgewater, FloridaIt sounds like a disaster to me. If this were to happen, I would stop using my Yahoo e-mail account because I don’t like t he feeling of Microsoft spying upon my business. I will sign up for Google.Antonio Glosser of Kansas City, MissouriRight now, Yahoo offers a lot of features and tools at no cost for all different levels of Internet users. Microsoft seeks nothing but prof it. Undoubtedly, they’ll do nothing other than find ways to start removing Yahoo’s formerly non-priced features. Microsoft’s greed will ruin the great thing that Yahoo currently is.33. How many companies are mentioned in the passage?A. One.B. Two.C. Three.D. Four.34. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. Shaun’s attitude towards Google is passive.B. Toni believes the Internet will have a promising future.C.

AIf you go to , you’ll find a strange palm-like structure, which is called WarkaWater. It gathers water from fog and condensation(水珠)and is invented by an Italian firm. When Italian designer Arturo Vittori and Swiss architect Andrea s Vogler first visited in 2012, they were shocked to see women and children forced to walk miles to access what, for them, had always been within easy reach, water.Only 34 percent of Ethiopians have access to a reliable water s upply. Some travel for up to six hours a day to fetch some or, e ven worse, has to use pond water polluted by human waste, su bject to the spread of disease.Worldwide, about 768 million people—two and a half times the population—don’t have access to safe drinking water. So just imagine if we could just pull water out of thin air? That’s what Vittori and Vogl er asked once they saw the severe problem and promised to ta ke action. Their firm, Architecture and Vision, has since come u p with WarkaWater, a grand palm-like structure that may look like something you’d see in a moder n art museum, but it’s been designed to harvest water from the air.WarkaWater, which is named after an Ethiopian fig tree, is com posed of a 30-foot bamboo frame containing a fog-harvesting nylon net that can catch water easily, can be easily l owered for repairs and allow communities to measure the water level. Collecting water through condensation is hardly a new te chnique, but the creators of WarkaWater say their tree-inspired design is more effective, maximizing surface and perfe cting every angle to produce up to 26 gallons of drinkable water a day—enough for a family of seven.Western organizations have been working to provide clean wat er access in Africa for decades, so WarkaWater joins a very lon g list of earlier attempts. So far, high-tech solutions, like the once promising Playpump, have failed, mostly due to high costs and maintenance issues. This is where WarkaWater stands apart—a lower-tech solution that is easy to repair and far more affordable than digging wells in the rocky Ethiopian plateau.1. What does the underlined phrase “subject to” in the third par agraph most probably mean?A. Owing toB. Opposite to C. Sensitive toD. Giving riseto2. WarkaWater is designed mainly to ______.A. gather clean water efficientlyB. reduce water supply costsC. simplify maintenanceD. preserve water supplies3. According to Paragraph 6, what caused Playpump to fail?A. Lack of advanced technologyB. Unsuccessful designsC. Lack of money and maintenance issuesD. Unreasonable structuresBEDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) —they arrived before polling stations even opened, dressed for th e school day in striped ties and blazers, dress slacks and tartan skirts, book bags over their shoulders —and, for the first time in British history, ballot (选票) cards in hands on September 18.Scotland’s experiment of allowing more than 109,000 Scottish t eenagers aged 16 to 17 took part in the Scottish independence referendum (公民投票), in which Scotland finally decided not to become independe nt.The age group only made up a small part of the 4.29 million tot al voters, but they have “demonstrated how the youngest voters can be some of the most enthusiastic in a mature democracy”, commented The Associated Press. Casting their ballots, they w ere “proud and passionate” to help their nation decide whether t o break away from the after 307 years in union. At age 16, Scottish residents are allowed to join the military, get married, and work. Eighteen is the legal drinking age, as well a s the ’s voting age. But in 2013, Scottish law was changed to all ow 16- and 17-year-olds in to vote in the referendum. The government pushed for t he change because “younger voters are more likely to vote with their hearts, not their heads—and embrace fundamental change by voting for the pro-independence Yes campaign”, NBC News said. But when the decision was handed down, some worried that high school students might not be as informed as adult voters. However, many experts said that assumption was wrong.Professor Jan Eichhorn of the of insisted that Scottish teena gers were as likely to read newspaper articles and campaign m aterials as their parents. They would simply get these resources through social media.“There’s no evidence to suggest that they’re less capable tha n adults of voting, from a research point of view,” Eichhorn told NPR.Scotland’s move to let younger teenagers vote in the referen dum has led to a discussion about whether the voting age ough t to be lowered to 16, both in the UK and the .“By 16, most people have about as stable an ideology (思想意识) as they are going to get,” Professor Jason Brennan of Geor getown University wrote for CNN, arguing that the US should al so think about allowing younger US citizens to vote.4. The Scottish independence referendum was held on Sept. 18 ______.A. to encourage youngsters to be concerned with politicsB. to lower the minimum voting age to 16 for the referendumC. to decide whether Scotland would become independent from theD. to elect who would be the new leader of5. According to the passage, we can learn ______.A. Scotland gained its independence from the eventually.B. It is possible for the to lower the voting age to 16 in the futur e.C. They are unwilling to be involved in the decision of the count ry’s future.CNowadays, girls are so mean to each other. Many girls are bec oming the victims of the harmful behaviors of the female bully. Emma Tracey was a popular 17-year-old and a well-liked athlete who had already won a soccer scholarship to colle ge. But none of that stopped Emma from becoming the target of online girl on girl bullying (欺凌). Emma began to receive hundreds of online unpleasant co mments via the latest social networking site called www.formspr .In March 2011, Emma committed suicide and although all agre ed that the online bother was not the single factor that led to E mma’ death, everyone did agree that it was a contributory factor .Unfortunately, Emma’ story is not unique. A 2010 study conduct ed by the states: “Cyberbullying victims were almost twice as l ikely to have attempted suicide compared to youth who had not experienced cyberbullying. Girls are 57% more likely to be victi ms of aggressive cyberbullying and 92% more likely to be the cr iminals.”Suicide is obviously the extreme and no one can minimize the tragedy of it. However, there are other damages that occur as a r esult of aggressive bullying. It can damage self-confidence and lead to feelings of worthlessness, and also incr ease social isolation and make victims become withdrawn, depr essed, anxious, and unsafe. So what causes girls to be so unki nd towards each other?A term known as relational aggression may best describe the c ause of girl on girl bullying. It starts with a clique (派系) usually led by a girl with a high level of social status and po pularity. In order not to lose her position, she will control girls wi thin the clique and take action if she feels threatened. At the lea der’s directive the girls within the clique will spread rumors and l ies and annoy other girls continuously. The bullying starts at school but will quickly go to cyberbullying due to anonymity (匿名) and lack of punishment. Girls will easily do so in the anony mity of the Internet. Finally the cause will be summarized as the unsafety and jealousy of one girl and the twisted loyalty of me mbers within her clique. Underneath the confident exterior (外表) of a female bully lie desperate unsafety.8. The example of Emma Tracey is given to show .A. popular youth are not easy to become the target of bullyingB. today’s youth don’t like to study any moreC. suicide is a serious problem among youthD. cyberbullying is quite common among teenagers9. The bullying will quickly go to cyberbullying mainly because .A. it’s free to post comments onlineB. the bullies don’t have to give their names onlineC. it will not attract much attentionD. it will not affect their real life10. Which of the following is NOT the cause of bullying?A. Lack of safetyB. The twisted loyalty of members within a cliqueC. Jealousy of othersD. Trying to be friendly11. We can infer from the last paragraph that a female bully .A. has strong self-confidenceB. has strong leadership skillsC. is actually weak insideD. is usually good at studyDAs we enter into this new age of cities in which more than half the world’s population will live in an urban area, we must also ta ke a hard look at how we will care for the significant increase in our elderly population. While many will be living longer, they will be doing so with age-related health issues and disease. Of special concern, the num ber of people living with dementia(痴呆)worldwide is set to treble by 2050. Alzheimer’s Disease Internat ional reports that 44 million people live with the disease now but that figure will increase to 135 million by 2050. With this added pressure to health systems, technology is the critical factor to s uccess. In , , a retired engineer, Mr. Helge Farsund cares for his wife, K ari. Kari, who had been an intensive-care nurse who served with the Red Cross in , was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s three years ago. Looking to live as normal a lif e as possible as K ari’s condition progressed, they are participati ng in a pilot project studying how a smart home powered by sen sors enables people with Alzheimer’s Disease to stay in their ho me.The system is created by Abilia. At the center of the system is a n iPad-like device. The screen has Skype, which allows carers to regul arly check in with patients. Some l,000 people now have the system installed in their home s, and 25 of them, including the Farsunds, are testing the latest version, which combines the screen with wirelessly connected s ensors around the house to detect motion. If a door is opened o r left open, or if the stove is left on, the system alerts patients a nd caretakers of danger. The planner also provides spoken rem inders about daily tasks, such as when they need to take medici ne and events like birthdays as well as enabling caretakers and family members to check in remotely via Skype.“With this kind of system, it allows people to take care of the mselves, which is the most important thing,” says vice president Oystein Johnsen. For him, any move to improve city life needs to begin with people. “Smart cities are coming and they need to start with individuals in their own home,” he says. “It also saves the government money. In Norway it cost one million Norwegia n krone (£100,000) per year to have someone in a home, while this system costs 15,000. That is a lot of money to save.”12. Which section of BBC news is most likely to include this pas sage?A. HealthB. Entertainment C. TechnologyD. Business13. The case of Helge and Kari Farsund in the second paragraph serves to .A. expose a social problemB. introduce the main topicC. show sympathy to the eld erlyD. arouse medical workers’ i nterest14. As I was already three-quarters of an hour late, I parked my car quickly. At noon, just as I was l eaving my friend’s office, it suddenly struck me that I had no idea where I had parked my car. I could hardly go up to a policeman and tell him that I had lost a small green car somewhere ! Walking down street after street, I examined each car closely and was very happy to see a small green car just behind an old car. But how disappointed I was to discover that though the car was exactly like my own, it belonged to someone else! Feeling quite tired now, I went off for lunch. Some time later, I left the restaurant and walked down the street. Turning the corner, I nearly jumped for joy: my car was right in front of me, and there was no problem this time.To tell the truth, driving in crowded cities is far from being a pleasure and it is much easier to walk than to drive.。

AWhile we are on the subject of crime, our listener question this week comes from Mohamad Firouzi in Iran. He wants to know about the history of Alcatraz Island and the prison that once operated there.Alcatraz Island is in the harbor of San Francisco, California. It is best known for being a federal prison, which was also called “The Rock.” It was once the most famous prison in America. Alcatraz was a military prison from the late eighteen fifties until the nineteen thirties. Then it became a federal prison for the country’s worst criminals. These included murderers, bank robbers and kidnappers. One of the main reasons federal officials chose Alcatraz Island to detain these prisoners was because they thought it would be impossible for prisoners to escape.Cold, deep and dangerous waters surround the island. Also, the distance between the island and San Francisco is too far for most humans to swim. No prisoner was ever officially reported to have successfully escaped. However, in nineteen sixty-two, three men broke out of the prison. Each man worked very hard at night for many months to cut through the stone wall of his cell. They made false heads out of paper, paint and hair. On the night of June eleventh, the men placed the heads in their beds to make it look as if they were sleeping. Then, the prisoners escaped through the holes in their cells to get to the water. The men were never seen or heard from again. It is believed that they drowned while trying to swim to San Francisco. The prison closed in nineteen sixty-three because of the high cost of keeping prisoners there and the need for major repairs. The last prisoners were moved to other jails. In nineteen seventy-two, the United States Congress passed a bill creating the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Alcatraz Island and the old prison are part of this area. Each year, more than one million people visit Alcatraz to see the prison ers’ cells and listen to stories about the jail’s history. But unlike the prisoners who once lived there, visitors can escape from the prison whenever they want and return back across the harbor to San Francisco.21. The text mainly tells us________.A. about the history of Alcatraz Island and the prison there.B. about the history of Alcatraz Island.C. about a military prison.D. about the subject of crime.22. Why did federal officials make Alcatraz the most famous prison in America?A. Because no prisoner successfully escaped from the prison.B. Because Alcatraz was Alcatraz Island.C. Because Alcatraz was a military prison.D. Because cold, deep and dangerous waters surround the island.23. Paragraph 5 is written to ________.A. tell us the three prisoners escaped the prison.B. prove prisoners couldn’t successfully escape from the prison.C. tell us how prisoners escaped the prison.D. tell us the three prisoners could make false heads out of paper, paint and hair.24. Now Alcatraz ________.A. is a place of interest.B. detains some prisoners.C. is where the United States Congress is.D. is still the most famous prison.BLast Thursday, I had the pleasure of visiting with Deputy Superintendent Pedro Martinez, Principal Neddy Alvarez and her staff at Western High School, located in the Clark County School District, in Las Vegas. The school undertook a comprehensive effort to completely transform the culture of the school and added a motivated group of talented teachers. Western altered(改变)the school day to add opportunities for students to get additional credits toward graduation and created smaller learning groups. As part of these comprehensive changes, the school’s leadership also focused on four main reforms to transform their school.First, improvements started with the change in the relationship between the school and students to create a caring atmosphere at the school. Using the “Capturing Kids’ Hearts” strategies, school leadership and teachers began building a trusting environment and students and families described seeing changes aimed at improving student outcomes and ensuring the success of every student. The school day was altered to add more options for students to obtain additional credits toward graduation. Students and teachers were grou ped into “houses,” so that smaller groups of teachers and counselors(辅导员)could create one-on-one relationships with students. Teachers and counselors said that the altered school day provides time to address student’s individual concerns and develop individualized learning plans to put every student on a path to graduation. The school also made changes to encourage parents to support school and encourage real dialogues between parents and the teachers and leaders at Western. Funded in part through the United Way, the school created a family engagement center to get parents more involved in their children’s education, particularly parents of English language learners. Parents like Ally Gaona and Martha Mendez told me that they had a voice and the tools to eng age in their children’s learning and that they recognize that the main responsibility for their children’s learning must rest with the parents. Parents were passionate about these positive changes and said that these changes signaled to the entire the community that the school was serious about family engagement.25. What is the main purpose of the passage?A.To attract people to the school.B. To talk about the school reforms.C. To introduce the schoolD. In 1983, the young tech innovator was attending a conference in Aspen when he and the group decided to bury as a stunt during a design convention. The tube that was filled with an eclectic collection of goods- ranging from the then-new apple mouse to a six-pack of beer for the people who discovered the time capsule- was meant to be dug up 20 years later. There was a problem with that plan, however, as everyone involved forgot where it was buried. The final discovery happened at the hands of the crew from the National Geographic Channel`s reality show called Diggers. The discovery was well documented and is surely going to be featured on an upcoming episode, and even the experts had problems finding this particular treasure. CNET reports that in spite of their preparations and clear idea of where the 13-foot-long tube was, it still took them two hours to dig it up using heavy machinery. To anyone removed from the tech industry, the accomplishment in finding the tube appears to be the biggest accomplishment. To others, the most interesting object would likely be the `Lisa` mouse placed in the tube by the hands of a then-28-year-old Jobs. The Lisa Mouse, which Jobs named after his daughter, was one of the first commercial computer mice soled publicly, making it a rarity at the time. The Aspen Historical Society is going to help the show creators catalogue the tube`s contents- but no word yet whether or not the Diggers cracked open one of the six bottles of Boddington`s Ale that was left inside for the people who found the tube.33.Who found the time capsule buried by Steve Jobs?A. Movies, television and video games are full of gunplay and bloodshed, and one might reasonably ask what’s wrong with a society that presents videos of violence as entertainment.Viewing large amounts of violent television and video games may well contribute to violent behavior in certain individuals. The trouble comes when researchers downplay uncertainties in their studies or overstate the case for causality(因果关系). Skeptics were dismayed several years ago when a group of societies including the American Medical Association tried to end the debate by issuing a joint statement “At this time, well over 1,000 studies… point to a causal connection between media violence and aggressive behavior in some children.”Freedom-of-speech advocates accused the societies of catering to politicians, and even disputed the number of studies (most were review articles and essays, they said). When Jonathan Freedman, a social psychologist at the University of Toronto, reviewed the literature, he found only 200 or so studies of television-watching and aggression. And when he weeded out “the most doubtful measures of aggression”, only 28% supported a connection. The critical point here is causality. The alarmists say they have proved that violent media cause aggression. But the assumptions behind their observations need to be examined. When labeling games as violent or non-violent, should a hero eating a ghost really be counted as a violent event? And when experimenters record the time it takes game players to read “aggressive” or “non-aggressive” words from a list, can we be sure what they are actually measuring? The intention of the new Harvard Center on Media and Child Health to collect and standardize studies of media violence in order to compare their methodologies, assumptions and conclusions is an important step in the right direction.Another appropriate step would be to tone down the criticism until we know more. Several researchers write, speak and testify quite a lot on the threat posed by violence in the media. That is, of course, their privilege. But when doing so, they often come out with statements that the matter has now been settled, drawing criticism from colleagues. In response, the alarmists accuse critics and news reporters of being deceived by the entertainment industry. Such clashes help neither science nor society.46.
