One day, when I was going to check in at an airport, I noticed there was a big problem. The counter person was telling everyone that all the planes were having problems and they would not be able to fly! And it was suggested that a bus would be provided to take us to Seattle. Everyone was worried, as we only had an hour and a half to make the connecting flight, and the bus was not even at the airport yet.

Finally, the bus pulled up, and the driver said, “They just pulled me out of bed after an all-night shift (夜班), and they expect me to get you to Seattle in time to catch your flight. Good Luck!”

Needless to say, everyone was in a really bad mood. I was loading my luggage into the bus and had taken my guitar over my back when the driver said, “What? Are you going to play that in my bus?”“Well, really did not plan on it,” I replied. “I was only kidding,” said the driver. But I started thinking about it, and I pulled out the guitar. A worried, angry woman said, “Well, what if I don’t like it?”“Then tell me and I will stop,” I replied.

We drove off, and the tension made the atmosphere in the bus horrendous! Then I started playing the old song Blue Skies. In a few minutes, I noticed everyone was humming along. I started to sing, too, and before long, the whole bus burst into song.

One song led to another, and everyone seemed to have a request. “Do you know You Are My Sunshine?” Everyone laughed and sang, with food passed around the bus, and before long, the airport was in sight.

The bus driver called, “We made it! We never would have done it without the help of our guitar player.” Shouts of approval rang through the bus. People exchanged addresses and invitations to visit, and a few exchanged hugs. The driver said to me, “This is the best ride I ever had. Thanks for your music.”

A few weeks later, my mailbox was filled with letters from my new friends. Their letters reminded me of how, by reaching out with just a song or a bit of friendship, you can turn a very tense situation into a peaceful experience — a magical, musical bus ride.

A good night’s sleep may help your brain file away (存档) lessons learned during the day. But, according to a new study, the brain begins processing and storing those memories long before it is time for bed and continues to do so even while you are thinking about and doing other things.

Recent studies have shown that the parts of the brain that we use to learn a task become active again during sleep. This activity, scientists suggest, could be the brain transferring memories from short-term to long-term storage. But the brain doesn’t necessarily wait until the lights are out to begin processing those memories.

To find out how the brain handles memories during waking hours, scientists gave 15 volunteers two tasks, each requiring different parts of the brain to learn. In one task, the volunteers learned how to drive in a virtual (虚拟的) town and then searched the town for an object. In the second task, they learned to predict where a series of dots would appear on a screen.

Using a special machine, the researchers scanned the volunteers’ brains right before and right after the tasks. The compared the two images to see whether the regions of the brain involved in learning the task were still active even after the task was completed.

After a break, the scientists took a third image of each volunteer’s brain. They wanted to determine whether these regions in the brain continued to be active after more time had passed and they discovered that, for at least an hour after learning the task, the brain stays active. It appears to continue processing the new information.

Furthermore, the images showed that distracting the volunteers doesn’t affect their ability to
